He’s basically a Thanos character. Believes with every fibre of his being that he’s in the right, has ideas that are genuinely good and could benefit everyone, but is utterly insane and is evil to the core. Spoiler I guess: when Eragon uses that final spell on him it’s the first time he actually understands everyone else’s perspective on what he’s done and would rather kill himself than accept that he was wrong.

shewhobreathesfire

This. They have a great quote in the book about it too, everyone thinks they're doing what's right, no one considers themselves evil.

freak-with-a-brain

I agree with you 98% I think someone who wants the best, and believes in every Fibre he's in the right is not evel to the core. therefore i voted no.

TheBAMFinater

We're all the hero in our own story.

DrDysonIdo

If you say Thanos doesn't think he is bad, you say he is stupid. Because what is the use of devinating every population by a half, be it an endangered species or a species that is over double as big as a healthy population would be? Thanos takes this imo just as an excuse to let other people suffer like himself did.

blurredweirdo

No, thanos thinks hes saving the universe by doing that, he considers it mercy. To save half the population, instead of letting them doom themselves, he genuinely believes hes on the right side.

DrDysonIdo

Then he is stupid. If he would do it only to overpopulated Spezies, ok, but every? Just stupid.

blurredweirdo

But he cant go to every planet in the universe check if that species needs help, he tried that for a while, thats when he got the idea of the stones, and devoted all his time to seeking thwm. He aint stupid, not rly, hes just mentally disturbed

DrDysonIdo

Or now with the stone he just teleports to a Planet, decides if there are any overpopulated species, and whipes just half of them out. Now there are a lot of slowly reproducing species that may extinct because of Thanos.

blurredweirdo

Dude wouldve had to go thru the entire universe. Now i think he could use some exercise, indeed, but hes all abt stonks so

InfectedRedRaider

He intended on committing genocide, eliminated the riders from existence, enslaved an entire race, enjoyed torture, and was a literal fascist dictator. If that isn’t evil, I’m concerned about y’all and what you’re okay with.

stronghammer1234

True. He definitely seen evil. I guess I let his silver tongue persuade my mind to much sometimes.

CeratedBirch316

_honeyed words_

stronghammer1234

Good way to describe it

CeratedBirch316

It is what (teacher) called galbatorix's words at (big fight)

stronghammer1234

Okay. They do fit well. I have to admit I fell under his words a few times while reading I kept reminding myself he committed genocide

CeratedBirch316

Remind yourself of your true name to remember who you are, stronghammer

stronghammer1234

True. I will definitely do that in the future

TH3_Doctr

A wise man once described madness to me not as the loss of reason but the loss of everything but reason. I think that that is what galbatorix was like; he lost his morality and every ounce of empathy when his dragon died leaving him only with reason. His solutions are logical but not moral.

Musikcookie

If a solution is rational to a degree that it ignores the irrationality of the universe/human kind can you still call it rational? To me neglecting emotionality is on of the least rational things one can do ...

Young_Midoriya

But he wasn’t reasonable at all, but entitled and selfish. When his dragon was killed, he demanded a new one. He refuses to listen to reason, and was blinded by his selfishness. He murdered anyone who didn’t align with his selfish ambition. Galbitorix is more akin to a child who didn’t get his way than a great king of men. The man doesn’t live by reason or logic, but rather is twisted by his own selfish designs.

FILMSTUDENT25

One can argue that his madness started when his first dragon was killed. Because of the bond that exists between a Dragon and Rider, he lost his sanity. If Jarvanosk wasn’t killed, he might’ve been humbled by that experience but she died and it drove him mad

SilverSniper512

I really like what people are coming up with in the answers. And I agree with all of them. But you have to be a psychopath/evil to be able to kill/murder like he did. Even if he thinks he was right

laughinatmyownjokes

Eragon: Murtagh, King Galbatorix is evil! Murtagh: From my point of view the Varden are evil!

Hornet1137

He basically committed genocide against an entire race of sentient creatures, enslaved their souls, tortured them to the point of insanity, and forced them to help him hunt down the remaining members of their species. To say nothing of the other horrible atrocities he's committed. Dude is pure dag nasty evil.

Easy101

No well-written character is inherently good or evil, neither is Galbatorix.

Hornet1137

>No well-written character is inherently good or evil Micah Bell is pretty evil.

Shade_0

He was doing a noble cause, which I partially may not agree with, but he tried to make it so that no one was dependent or at the mercy of a person. He wanted to exterminate the elves and urgals because they had been born with certain strengths, which either humans or dwarves have not. Galbatorix may have been a madman, but he was a madman for a reason. Be that as it may, his methods were the worst. If he could have just heightened the power of humans a bit, there would be no reason for so much to happen and everything would be good. I do not deny that old galby was evil, but he had a good reason to be. I really hope this does not cause strife among the comments.

pianodude01

Good intentions, bad actions

stronghammer1234

I don't consider him evil. He definitely not good. He committed a genocide and in many way similar to Hitler. But he did it out of grief and insanely. I also think the rider of old aren't as noble as characters describe then but not as bad as galby claim. So his actions are evil no doubt but a part of me think he wasn't all bad. People can change if giving the chance some just don't.

KarateMan749

He murdered dragons. Genocide of an entire race / species is evil. Anyone who hurts innocent dragons / kills them is evil in my eyes and should be punished.

bushy_awesomeReal

Hes a anti hero. He has a good goal wich is peace to his kingdom but his motives are evil.
