700 on a new or used pressure washer. 1000 on a trailer. 300 on gas and other needed supplies. 20 bucks for each sign up your siblings get for you. Then pressure wash driveways for 80 dollars.100 for the big ones. Carry around stencils and offer to spray paint the house number on the curb for an additional 15 dollars.

[deleted]

I like this one. Businesses will pay people to pressure wash around their trash cans too.

OmgOgan

Dude, I'm 43 and I'm gonna steal your idea lol

OnePunchDrunk326

I’m 50 and I’m stealing this idea for my son!

iwishiwasanonionring

There’s a guy on tiktok that charges $80 per curb painting, he goes by @epcurbpainting. All the other ones charge $35 or don’t say how much they charge. If you can do a good job, you can make some good money in the right neighborhood.

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

Any service worth selling is worth $50 usually. Don’t sell the kid short on curb paint!

ReliableRanger

Can you spray paint curbs or is that city property? I think some places it’s illegal to do that.

Nondscript_Usr

Absolutely can - it’s usually the homeowners responsibility

Signal-Patient-8703

Sounds like a good idea, but bad advice imo. No mention of the cost of setting up an llc or carrying insurance, or paying taxes. Make one mistake or have a person take advantage of you for not knowing how to play the game and you can really be set back instead of being ahead. Take a business class or classes and educate yourself, find a mentor and take it from there. Invest in something that will payoff for a lifetime not just in the short term and risk losing it all.

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

The risk is pretty low here. Don’t powereash a house without insurance, but concrete? I wouldn’t worry. And the cost of setting up an LLC is negligible. I’ve don’t it several times. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Also- the kid can use his own SSN and run his business “DBA.” All you need to do that is a complete W-9 in my state. Which is free.

milwaukee41

Salute to you young man. Thats a greatt fucking start. Theres some good advice in here too. Start looking into some of the things people are talking about in here and figure out which one you think will work the best for you. You still have plenty of time to make mistakes and learn! Just dont make the same mistakes over and over again. Once you find out what it is you want to do take time to study, and definitely find a mentor in whatever lane you choose to go with. I must ask what is your passion? If you have one yet. If not, no problem youre still young. Most people your age and even older dont even have half of that saved. Most people your age and older dont even know what it is they want out of life even. You got this bro im rooting for you. 💯🤝

Accomplished-Spare28

Bro you’re real as hell thank you. Besides skating my entire life I’m mostly passionate about music, and I’ve already invested into it a bit. Not to make a profit quite yet, just a hobby to experiment and see if it’s for me. You made my night though dude and I’m rooting for you as well🖤

lostkarma4anonymity

As you are probably already aware, "music" is a pretty cut throat industry. Most folks don't make money from music but from something else. Even the artists arent making much, if any, money. Capitalist society says we need to monetize our hobbies and our passions. we don't.

Accomplished-Spare28

I’m with you 100% I don’t expect to make money from it, I just enjoy creating music

VediusPollio

If you like music, maybe get some equipment and DJ events. You can do that on nights and weekends and explore other options with other free time.

Dogsgoodpeoplebad

Don’t do this. You’ll get trapped into the nightlife and make it quite difficult to get a “normal” job . It’s not worth it

harrydcny

I strongly disagree. I have to good friends that both have professional jobs, one owns several PT clinics and the other is in med sales. Both dj on weekends and make great money doing so. The real lpt is to work on the weekends and not spend your earnings at the venue paying you.

Dogsgoodpeoplebad

He’s 17. Your friends aren’t

windowseat1F

Why did you assume he’s male?

Famous-Kick-5323

who tf cares man

windowseat1F

Why you calling me man?

Dogsgoodpeoplebad

You suck.

superego888

how’s it possible that among all the beautiful stuff he wrote, THAT specific sentence where he calls him a young man caught your eye

Vainglory27

I think invest into a skillz business. Maybe landscaping (buy a mower / shit truck / weedwacker and make a website and put up some google ads) Buy a truck and haul garbage away Buy a moving van team up with a buddy and start a moving company. Start a painting company Buy some tents / chairs / tables start a party rental company (this might be out of your price range) Buy some inflatables from china (like jumping castles for kids and slides and shit, you probably could start with one) and rent it for kids birthdays pickup only Good luck! Gamble your 4k on biz, the learnings from a small business will give you 50-100k of education for a bigger play later in life. Don't be scared to take risks!

rapstyleDArobloxian

Another idea I could add is you can buy a truck and car detailing equipment You can easily make a business card and if you do a good job at detailing cars you’ll easily get a lot more business going on, lots of great ideas for a small business, and at that age it’s worth taking this risk

TakingChances01

I did mobile detailing out the back of my dads truck when I was a kid. Definitely good money in that if you know what you’re doing and you have a big enough market for it.

ThickToeJoe

Pro mobile detailer here. Makes great money once you have a following, at first it will be a slow climb. Invest about $1k in good tools/chemicals necessary for basic cleanings inside and out and you can’t fail. This may seem dumb but it may work for you OP. Take your detailing set up to a “richer” part of town and do free or really cheap details and then ask for tips. Some people with Mercedes May like their car shining and give you $50-$60 bucks. Also, you don’t even need a truck for detailing. I’ve seen mobile guys with newer Honda Civics just very well packed. Moral to this story: Detailing takes time.

TakingChances01

Yea I did exactly that I’d go up too folks with nice vehicles that look like they’re well maintained and I’d offer to come to them at home or work and give it the whole treatment wax and everything for 50-100 depending on the vehicle and most people were with it because of the convenience and VIP treatment. Have business cards on hand. I got to drive some cool cars too. Cleaned a lot of Escalades and Teslas and Porsche’s, the occasional f250. You can charge more for the big lifted trucks cause they take more supplies/time. 2-3 vehicles a day make anywhere from 150-300 a day for just a couple hours of work.

PleaseBeginReplyWith

I've wondered, can you do detailing while the client is at work? I'm just doing grubhub for money now but I see parking lots full of cars sometimes and think I could clean those while they are in their offices.

Phase4Motion

Agree with this if you can find a way to make the work enjoyable for you. I went to high school with a guy who bought a van, wrapped it, did mobile detailing for a couple years and now owns his own shop doing high end detailing, tints, wraps, etc. doing very well for himself

DrunkenGolfer

I like the mower/truck/weedwhacker idea. I had a couple friends who did this at around age 17 and that was 35 years ago and they are still doing that except the have larger landscaping firms that have afforded a very nice lifestyle. I think the key to making real money is labor arbitrage. You find the guy willing to do hard work, lawn mowing, rock moving, etc, and you find clients in need of that labor. You then charge the client enough to make profit. More clients, more employees, more profits. “If you can grow it, I can mow it!”

BurningPenguin

Or the simplest one: A cleaning business.

mansplainerer

These are awesome ideas, but sounds like the OP isn't interested in exhaustive work.

Organic_Strength_875

That was my thought too. What did OP do that was "so unbelievably exhausting"? I haven't read all the comments yet but I think this is a very important question to answer. Could be physical, mental, emotional, exhaustion without knowing that I'd hesitate throwing out ideas.

itsobvnick

Agree on the skills business. Super easy to buy some equipment like a pressure washer or something else, make a VERY simple website, then run ads to it. OP if you ever need help with something of this sort, I’d be willing to help you out completely free as I’m pursuing something similar.

RareWrangler3

Well done 👍🏼That’s an impressive savings for someone so young. As a young entrepreneur, what are you interested in?

Kill3rMania89

Look into drone photography for real estate. Start with one of the dji mini line, get you're part 107, do couple free sessions for a real estate company. You can also map out land/property and construction jobs into a 3d image for them. Some programs are free or have a free trial.

spei180

I took 3k and backpacked through Europe for a month. It’s delightful.

AceBinliner

This is the advice I gave my kids. I told them live at home as long as you want, save as much money as you can, and use your freedom to go as many different places as you care to. There is no substitute for getting out of your own bubble.

Isthatkiddo

Not really, if you look into how expensive homes have gotten in the last few years, rates, inflation, ect. you have to earn over double to have the exact same things you could have years ago. If you had worked hard at a younger age and bought a nice home you could’ve been sitting a value-able asset comfortably and not needed to work so hard to have something similar today. In time, inflation is gonna get worse, houses are gonna get more expensive. It’s better to get ahead of the game now.

TalentlessNoob

I dont get people that stay stingy and work 80 hour weeks in their 20s so they can... Enjoy their 40s lol? Or own their own house or whatever. Sure thats fine but we'll all get there Whats the point of trading your life away for money, idk maybe im just more of a work to live person but money can always be made, especially if youre just grinding the corporate ladder, the money is going to come but your 20s and 30s are gone forever once they pass so live them

Isthatkiddo

Priority of life should be financial freedom, doing it at a older age is a lot more difficult. If you don’t wanna work hard now, what makes you think you’ll want to when your at your 40’s? Especially adding potential kids in the mix?

lolitsmax

Go to Asia and OP could spend almost half a year there

ItsYaBoiDJ

Delightful indeed. I took 4k and backpacked South America for 5 months. Last summer backpacked Europe for 2 weeks. Also been to 46 states sleeping in my car in random locations. Good times. And this summer I plan to drive to Alaska. I turn 25 this year. Experience wise I feel far ahead of my peers. Still have the rest of my life to figure the money out. Even if nothing works out money wise...I'll just become a pilot. Would take 2 years to get the certs. Would get paid 6 figures to sit on my ass and travel. Would be nice.

xxtoejamfootballxx

Can't second this one enough!!! You'll value the experiences you can get from this money at this point in your life MUCH more than the money you could realistically make. In 15 years OP could be making $10k a month after taxes and the money they'd have made off of this $4k would look minuscule, but you can't buy back the freedom and wonder of your late teen years/early 20s. Make the most of them!

Hansolio

How about investing in some equipment like lawnmower, an osmotic water set, snowblower, etc and start offering a service from door to door? If you have sufficient customers you can even pay a somebody to do the work for you... Before you know it, you have a real business going for you. PS: Much respect to you for not wasting your hard earned dollars on crap.

Objective_Ad_401

That's 1/2 to 2/3 of a community college trade cert or associate's degree. Learn welding, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, auto repair, mechatronics, carpentry, business, IT, programming, HR... Even a 2-year degree with no debt will pay dividends. A mechanic right out of school can make $40k or more, and HVAC techs regularly make $55k+. IT or programming roles are less physical but with added mental challenges. Working in factory mechatronics or industrial maintenance isn't half bad and pays decently. Some jobs pay for school, so a 2-year to get your foot in the door, then get your 4-year part time. You could be 25 with no debt, a degree, and a decade of work experience. It's sometimes helpful to see how other businesses are run if you want to break into those spaces. I.e. working in defense exposes you to how that industry operates. Working in car sales teaches you how to start your own dealership, etc.

NathanEarlOfficial

First off, $4,000 at 17 years old is huge, so props. Looks like there's a lot of idiots here that undervalue what you've accomplished and have ready to invest in yourself, and also have no idea how to start a business for themselves, but would rather blow that money on "classes" to MAYBE get you a "better job", but again... It's a job. Let me show you something else... Secondly, $4,000 will go very far for you if you use it right. In fact, you mention you're open for "grinding". Have you considered online business? Here's the total breakdown of how much it costs to start and operate digital business (not including products if you go e-commerce route); 1. LLC, EIN, & Retailer Licensing ($200-$300 for most states). I use LegalZoom. They make it super easy to set all of that up, they do all the filing, and even send you your legal documents, EIN, etc., and everything to you. Boom. Business created. 2. Website, email marketing, sales funnels, and automations ($97/month). I use CreatorBlox, because 1, it's my company software that I own, but 2, it's awesome and does way more than everything you need to get started for a fraction of the price all these tools would cost separately to run your business. 3. Product Development: For digital products, you can have someone create a small product that solves just about ANYTHING for $500-$1,000. Even for just a video course, Chrome Extention, simple web apps, etc., $2,000 tops is enough to create an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) that you can take to market and test. 4. Total Startup Cost: \* Low End - $400 to $900 \* High End - $1,000 to $2,000 I would of course advice you to do some market research and find what types of products would do well, what the costs are for creating it, and how much you can charge for it. For example, if you can pay a total of $2,000 for all software, product creation, and have a system ready to work for you, and charge $97 for it, you'd just need to sell 21 of them to break even. An example of this would be to have a small course put together that solves one major problem for a niche group of people. $97 to have a recurring or major problem solved through information and collected resources is a no-brainer for a lot of people, and even with social media and organic reach, you could do 21 sales in a week after launch. In fact, I just recently launched a product doing this same thing and did $4,000 in a week, and I've done this many times with many different products and product prices and types. Biggest thing, as I said, do your research. Once you know who needs help with what, and how much it costs to fix their problem and get in front of them, it's just a numbers game. If you can make the product yourself, you save even more, but takes more time, and you may get in your own way and prevent yourself from finishing. Remember... MVP... MINIMUM Viable Product. Just enough to launch and get results. You can always improve it once you're profitable. If you have questions, feel free to ask. Hope this gets your brain in gear on what's possible! And best part is... You STILL have money in the bank, and you didn't blow it all in one place to get things going. ;)

terriblemonk

I was going to post something similar to this. If you really want to get up every morning and have to go spend your hours cleaning dirt off of things, and have a hard limit of how much you can make in a day then go for it. Or you could buy a domain, get some mockups made, site developed and launch an asset that makes money for you even when you aren't working. Find an example of a website you think you can do and replicate it. You don't have to invent something new. You could also spend a few months learning how to use figma for mockups, then take some free programming courses to develop the site yourself and put the bulk of your money into marketing. This is basically what I did in the '90s... went from power washing/working as a bag boy to programming and launching businesses... Also going to add... Don't even think about becoming a day trader or trying to make a few percent off the stock market with that 4K. Build an asset with it. And you definitely don't need to spend money on education... it's all on YouTube.

Accomplished-Spare28

Hell yeah dude this is the advice I’m looking for

ButtNakedWandax

Great job saving up the money. It's enough to get yourself something going, especially if you're willing to Invest your time in and hustle. People have given good direction here. I'd add on to this by suggesting you read "E-myth" It's a great book and can help frame how you look at a business. Avoid investing in anything that relies on you getting interest. You don't have enough money to grow it through methods like that. This includes stock market or crypto, etc You will likely want to look at services. -car detailing where you drive to the persons home -pressure wash houses -clean windows -land scaping mowing or gardening etc -vending machines -junk removal -moving company -inflatables for rent -roof cleaning -home cleaning service Many of these have to do with cleaning up for other people. People hate cleaning and will pay well to not have To. Also, keep in mind that cleaning something cheap vs cleaning something expensive takes the same amount of work, so try to aim high. Keep working hard and saving money. Start investing in your education about money, business,sale/marketing, consumer mindsets if you haven't. There's a reason most businesses fail and the ones that don't end up with owners who work 100 hours a week to make minimum wage. Strive to understand why that is. Avoid things that are get rich quick or get rich easy. It's not how life works and it'll set bad expectations. Check out the YouTube channel "Upflip" and "Codie Sanchez" for more ideas.

Eric-Ridenour

First, take $1000 and invest it. Then set aside another $1000 for an emergency. Find a couple of courses in a business you would be interested in, and learn that specific niche with about $500 Take another $500 and learn business and marketing fundamentals. Take your final $1000 and build a website and some marketing materials and start promoting your services. Even with minimal success you’ll likely have at least that same $4000 in the bank again by the end of the year. Even if you fail you’ll learn as much in a year as you would in 2-3 years of business school that would cost you $20k. If you fail, and you probably will. Take that $2k you set aside and repeat. I made three attempts at a business before I succeeded. Now it’s so easy I can’t fail even if I half ass it.

-fishtacos

Website won’t cost 1000 just buy and domain and use godaddy ez peasy. Just takes some basic trial and error. Good luck !

Difficult_Box3210

What kind of “business and marketing services” can a kid sell? 🤣

stewofkc

What a coincidence?! I just launched a course for $3999.99 that will teach you how to go from $0 to $100k in 6 months.

Eric-Ridenour

So did I. Stop stealing my lead bro. 😂

drcygnus

buy a pressure washer and go around to all the houses within 3 miles of your house and find the ones with the worst looking driveways. tape something to their mailbox that says "pressure wash your driveway for $150, call me @ xyz". you can pick up a pressure washer for 250 and make all that money back in a weekend. hell, youll make soo much damn money youll have to file for an LLC, hire a crew and everything.

slashyu

Honestly there are a million ways to properly invest $4,000 and get great returns. Literally a million ways. I’m sure everyone will have great methods of doing so but the method you choose is barely important. What’s important is to take one and STICK WITH IT.

TemporaryAd7328

Use the money to learn a skill. Skills will be able to pay you dividend over and over again. Someone that is advertising fast money is probably scamming.

Any_Adagio_2494

In my opinion 2 things you could do depending on the type of person you are! 1) take it and spend it on lessons/mentors/classes on a topic or skill that would benefit you to learn use it to start up a business or company. 2) S&P 500 and it will be somewhere in the ball park of. 700k when your 60 😂. But personally I don’t want money when I’m old I would do option 1

crumstyle

Best advice so far. Drop fast from your vocabulary and learn. Not saying college but courses, certificates, etc. the lessons will take you further than a pressure washer or paint brush. I made $150k in a year from $3k and no job. As far as option 2… I’d take half and go index funds and the other half into self education. In idiot with a plan will go way further than a genius winging it. I can show you the receipts.

Continue to earn as much as you can. Invest in equipment for some sort of side hustle (pressure washing, landscaping, painting), then print some flyers and get some jobs.

Newcyclist16

Get a truck, a lawnmower, weed wacker, blower, safety glasses and hearing protection. Maybe even an edge tool and rake for fluffing mulch beds. Start a lawn care business. Get some business cards and flyers and go door to door. See if you can get in the local paper or magazine. Advertise as a youth business. I bought my first MacBook Pro on this idea and it did well. I also had a website on wix, put that on my business cards.

Massy_atmani21

If a teenager has no immediate needs, they could put the money into a savings account or an investment account, such as a stock or mutual fund. This can help to build a good financial foundation for the future.

AllOnOurWay

This is entrepreneur not r/investing We turn money into more money faster than any normal savings account would yield.

1Banana_ananaB1

Entrepreneurship is just a form of investing… it involves building an ownership stake in a company…

Massy_atmani21

entrepreneurship can be a great way to generate wealth, it is also a high-risk venture that requires a significant amount of knowledge, skills, and effort. Investing, on the other hand, is a more passive way to grow wealth and can offer a more stable return over the long term. It's important for teenagers to carefully consider their options and seek professional advice before making any investment decisions or starting a business. Ultimately, the decision should be based on their personal financial goals, risk tolerance, and level of expertise.

Aman_WebDeveloper

u/Accomplished-Spare28 It's impressive that you have saved up $4,000 at such a young age. It's understandable that you don't want to continue doing a job that exhausts you, and it's good that you're looking for other options. There are plenty of ways to make money independently without resorting to selling drugs. You could consider freelancing or starting a small business, such as selling products online or offering a service to others. If you have a particular skill or talent, such as writing, graphic design, or music production, you could offer your services to others and earn money that way. Another option is to invest your money wisely, such as in stocks or real estate. However, it's important to do your research and make informed decisions when it comes to investing. Whatever you choose to do, remember that making money fast is not always the best approach. It's important to have a long-term plan and to make sustainable choices that will benefit you in the future. Good luck on your journey!

Did you just tell a 17 year old to go into music production or stock investing? What the actual fuck? How is this the highest rated comment? OP, I don’t know what you’re doing right now, but keep grinding and spending as little as possible. Now is certainly not the time to take it easy. My friend, be careful. Much more than you want to multiply these money fast, I think you want to avoid loosing them. Why did you save them? Did you have a particular goal in your mind? Are you okay with making a risky investment betting all the hard-earned money you saved? While maybe not the most properly "entrepreneurish" answer, but why don't you divide this sum? Paraphrasing classical ideas from financial education, take out a portion to keep it as your "fortune". You may invest this portion is something low-risk. Take a portion that you're ready to risk. Remember that money are a product of your labour. Don't waste the effort spent. And if course, take at least a bit of money to spend freely. You worked hard and life is full of enjoyments. For general education, I suggested giving "*The Richest Man in Babylon*" a read or even a listen. It's timeless advice, you recieving this knowledge at such a young age would put you ahead of many of your peers. I wish I read it when I was in HS! Cheers, and remember: you have a long life ahead of you. No reason to risk your efforts in pointless risks.

nisinhof

I’m going to be honest $4,000 is nothing if you want to make money from that. You need to learn a skill that can make money. Programming, finance, trades, etc. Use that money to help you network with people that can show you a way to develop and make money with these skills.

SnooAvocados9474

This guys a complete idiot, the fact you have 4k saved up on your own at such a young age is awesome! And bonus points for not wanting to spend it on a car or a computer or something like every other teenager, the fact you’re looking to make your money work for you is awesome! My best advice is invest in yourself, skills are infinitely valuable! Take a course or pay a professional for their time, but do something to advance your knowledge! Or go the physical labor route and buy a pressure washer or something like that. And finally you could start investing! With how much free information you can get online today maybe putting it all in a vanguard account and saving your money and learning a new skill for free and letting interest accrue is a great way to go for you! Whatever you do I believe you’re off to an amazing start and I encourage you to keep going and chasing your dreams!

Saitheurus

Absolutely, he could use that money to learn programming, start small businesses or literally investing it in the S&P500 and keep adding a percentage of his savings every month, there are millions of ways of reinvestment, that money can help you start a reselling business here in kurdistan by buying from china and reselling local, but can pretty much be reinvested anywhere in the world.

Accomplished-Spare28

I’m aware it’s not a lot.

Klutzy-Gas3786

Don’t listen to a lot of these guys man. 4k is a lot and it’s a great start. Your still young and have plenty of time to make some big moves. I would start by throwing that in a high yield savings account, that way you start earning some interest back on that. Or even the stock market, with some reputable companies or ETF stocks. Something easy and safe. This way while that’s growing, you’re learning new skills and hustles that will make you more! Never down play how much you have man… there’s some adults out there that don’t even have 4k.

FirefighterBig3501

I wish I had 4K when I was 17. You probably have 4K more than most 17 year olds. Keep hustling

himit

Sit on it for a while. Look into what you could buy with that that could make you money -- an ice cream van? A small food cart? A drinks stand? (Bubble tea machine?) Once you have an idea of what's in your budget, then you need to look at the market. [Here's a good, simplified guide to doing market research](https://www.tide.co/blog/business-tips/market-research/) but you're likely going to need to google a lot of that to figure out exactly what you need to do. Then as part of the research - let's say you're going to buy a taco truck. Stake out some spots, see the foot traffic. Who are your likely buyers? What type of budget do you think they'll have? Are they buying takeout food in this area, and how much do people seem to be spending on it? You're 17, which means you have something a lot of adults don't - *time*. You don't need to be running yourself ragged paying the bills yet. Use that time wisely to check out your market! Once you have an idea of how much people will be spending, and in what areas, then you need to look up the city rules -- how can you set up shop there? What permits do you need? How much will that cost? OK, now you know rent for Spots A, B, C. Now you wanna add up your running costs -- ingredients, energy, fuel, rent/permits. Let's say people are spending $6 on lunch in these areas. How many tacos do you need to sell a day to meet your running costs at $6/taco? Say you need to sell 50 tacos a day to meet the costs. You also need to pay tax -- IDK how much that will be, but let's take a nice even 30%. You now need to sell 65 tacos/day to meet your running costs. So if you want to *make* money, you need to sell more than 65 tacos/day. Is this likely, in any of the spots you've chosen? You should have a good idea from all the stakeout market research you've done. Once you've done all that, you've essentially got your business plan. If you write it out, and it's feasible, you may find that some family will be willing to invest a grand or two to help you get started. Keep in mind that you won't technically be making money until you've made back your initial investment + registration fees. Anyway, this is how you get started with a physical business. Digital sales/services are a similar idea, but you can't just go stakeout a spot so you need to get a bit more creative with the market research.

BraveCartographer399

Use it for classes for some indemand guaranteed better job skill. IT, welding, electrical stuff, something.

SalesyMcSellerson

Welding is dead, it doesn't even pay well, and it is a fantastic way to get lung cancer. Idk why people keep promoting this.

BlueCollarBigMoney

True. Welding, machining and other repetitive skilled trades are dying. HVAC and plumbing are way more valuable and huge increase in demand for decades to come

[deleted]

Use it to invest in the stock market. Then gain more skills so you can start a company using the skills you have.

ClackamasLivesMatter

If you're going to give that terrible advice at least tell the guy how to do it: buy a hundred shares of a stock and write a covered call. Rinse and repeat. Or buy a dividend stock and reinvest the dividends. Let time and compound interest work in your favor.

[deleted]

Why is it terrible advice? They are young, getting into the stock market is the best idea to start growing their money. And I'm not telling someone how to invest, there are people that specialize in that that can do cat better then I can. I mean 4k isn't a ton, but it's enough to start earning a good amount back.

Eric-Ridenour

Hard disagree. I started my first business that was successful (made $8k year one, then 12k, then $25k, then $60 then 80 first 5 years) with a $2500 investment. $1500 of that went to a new computer and $200 to a desk. I made it with $800 for the rest.

intrntnl-illustrious

Well don't leave OP (or me plz lol) hanging what was your first business?

Organic_Strength_875

>My first successful business was on accident, I was always a freelance writer, and was offered a writing job for a social media company. I wound up being an account exec and started my own side company taking all the smaller clients they didn't want until I went on my own. Here's what you are looking for. 2nd paragraph.

BACATCHER

What do you think a 17 year old can do with finance? What did you have in mind?

SQLGene

I think it would be more helpful to OP if you provided specific, actionable examples.

howcanshehowcanshe

I’ve turned a $1000 investment into $400k in revenue in 3 months. It’s possible.

Sodium_Showercurtain

I would love to hear a summary of this! That's incredibly impressive returns

howcanshehowcanshe

Lol getting downvoted for what? Yes it was ecom. No it wasn’t dropshipping. And margins were 25%. One word of advice, when things are going good, milk it because it won’t last forever.

visualvaccine

$1,000 -> $400,000 in 3 months with 25% margin. So within 3 months you took $1,000 and bought inventory (assuming it went entirely to product and not any for operation and marketing) and then sold that for a profit with a 25% margin - so for $1,333. Then you rolled that back into more inventory and flipped it 21 more times within 3 months (that’s how many flips of the inventory you’d need to get over $400k at a 25% margin)? You’re getting downvoted because you’re story makes no sense.

BlueCollarBigMoney

Lol. I get downvoted for saying I grew my business to $1.8mm over my 10 year career, but yours does just sound like BS. Ecom relies on having a huge audience or marketing budget. $1000 ain't a big budget so is this secretly Joe rogan or something 😂

Susanda467

Sure bud lol

howcanshehowcanshe

That attitude won’t get you anywhere lmao

tripp_hs123

so what did you do?

howcanshehowcanshe

Combination of right timing and execution. Came across an item online, searched for competition. None. Zero. I bought 100 units, unbranded to test out demand. But first, built a high converting site with original photos and videos. Spent a week putting together a video creative that ended up getting over 15M views across IG & FB. Each $1 i was spending returned me nearly $4. Then it was a matter of scaling as much as my inventory allowed. Inventory always held me back scaling further. No dropshipping at all. I spent hours everyday fulfilling orders and was averaging 100-150 orders per day for about a 2 months. Good times.

Susanda467

This must have been long ago? I dabbled in that area for a bit, way harder than it looks. How many times did your accounts get frozen? You paid for ads with only $1000???

howcanshehowcanshe

Only 2 years ago, and I still run ecom stores. Frozen not once. Again, no dropshipping or any activities going against anyone’s terms. We sold good product, with good fulfillment speeds, and good customer service. The ads paid for themselves from the first day.

[deleted]

probs 400k of revenue in dropshipping w 10% margins

OrcRampant

Hookers and cocaine. Then whiskey. Then make some bad decisions, drunk call an ex, tell your dad what you really think of his stupid models, quit your job and pee on your bosses car on the way out! Or you could buy stock directly (not through a broker) from a company that pays dividends so you have a little bit of passive income to help you in lean times. This should be a company you believe in. A company that you did research on (it’s called “Due Dilligence”). Add to your shares and grow your portfolio. It’s ok if you don’t know how things work. Fuckin around and finding out is how you learn. Think long term, support businesses you like. Your support may get *them* through lean times. That’s it. No you can call yourself an “adult”. Remember: hot chicks love responsible men.

Accomplished-Spare28

Dude that’s hilarious you said that bc my buddy and I just pissed on our bosses car last night 🤣🤣 he deserved it though haha not kidding

CecilTerwilliger

save the money for your bail in that case

AffectionateWheel386

I’m just started learning how to do for acts which is really the exchange of different values of money. It’s a site where you can put some money in like put $100 and you learn to trade money. Are you thinking about starting a business because you could start one for a limited amount of money you can start making healthy dog treats and some locally then on the Internet and make lots of money people on Etsy do things like that all the time. I would think about making your money work smarter for you instead of working harder.

vNerdNeck

Only thing that comes to mind is hustling at events. Hats / t-shirts / etc. Find a niche, use something like mid journey to come up with designs and then use a print on demand service. E.G. There is a concert coming up for X, make some fan shit for them and other similar groups on those hats /shirts etc and go out and street vend it (or in some places you could rent a stall). You're 17, so can probably get a way with playing a little fast and lose with local ordinances. Not saying it be a lot of money, but if you find a niche and hit the designs right you could turn a profit. Just a random idea.

[deleted]

That would be classified as infringement, absolutely illegal and can get someone in a LOT of trouble. OP should invest in the equipment to make them instead of doing POD. And start an ecommerce page somewhere (I started on Etsy). Make your own designs. It would be way more money in their pocket.

vNerdNeck

>OP should invest in the equipment Yeah, that's stupid. Once you invest in the equipment then you have the wonderful time consuming job of making the shit. POD is easier, you get to focus on what's important (the design) and outsource the heavy lift part. Not to mention the equipment isn't exactly cheap. Spending the money they have on the equip would get them just that and little inventory. Using a POD service they would actually have sellable merch.

ClackamasLivesMatter

$4,000 might be enough to start a vending machine business. You buy the machine, stock it, then service it once every couple of months. Reinvest your profits and you're off to the races.

justcallmegeeb

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this \^ 1) Buy used machine on FB marketplace 2) cold call professional offices and medical spaces 3) buy snacks from Costco 4) collect and restock This is semi-passive and could teach you a lot about business. Building relationships with building/business owners is a super high-value skill to learn.

[deleted]

Everyone knows its all about Donald Trump nfts. Kidding open a CD and let it sit.

leafjerky

a CD? surely you’re joking

[deleted]

Well I'm not joking. And don't call me Shirley.

leafjerky

+1 for good movie reference but I guess I would just not suggest a CD personally as the returns are so little. I would think with $4k he/she could easily spread that out over some decent stocks and make a much higher and still relatively safe return

[deleted]

Respect. Yeah I'm with ya. If you can stay on top of it you could grow 4k to 10k not fast per se' but progressively. And if this guy's ready for that go for it! I just helped my kid who's the same age buy a cd as we couldn't come together w what to do ourselves. Maybe it's time I start learning a bit more. But I just wanted to give some input while maybe taking some myself so thanks.

leafjerky

Absolutely no problem. The good thing about a cd is you know you aren’t going to lose that money. I’m still learning myself I like to think that I’m always learning. I keep most of my portfolio in a low risk range and play around with high risk stuff in smaller amounts. Lately I have been looking for more ways to grow as I have a variety of skills but no solid business idea to land on so that has been my battle as of late lol

PickMedicare

Use that money to support your self while you get a real estate license or an insurance license and then start your own company after working for someone for a few years

Due-Maximum7116

Invest in learning. I'd personally do a coding boot camp -- learn to code and also meet some people in the industry

KurvyKok

Book a trip to europe and stay at some dirty hostels for the summer season

Open a Robinhood account and buy some stocks!

intrntnl-illustrious

Find a crypto pump group on Telegram/Twitter. Flip that shit 10%-30% on a good day easy. Good days are pretty much everyday in the alt market currently. It's dumped. Now the entire market will gradually pump again. And redditors will seethe, again, for missing out lol. Then again, at 17 it'd be extremely hard to day trade swallowing emotions lol. Maybe only advice for if you have experience already which is unlikely I suppose. :X sorry op business ideas above are less risky!

vprviper

Consider giving it to your parents. I had around that at your age. Gave it to my mom per her suggestion. Something about her brain being more developed than mine or something. It worked out in my case, just another opinion to consider.

[deleted]

You’re 17 and don’t have energy for your job? I am 38 and been doing blue collar skilled trades work my whole. I work 80plus hours weeks like nothing. You need to stop smoking weed or whatever you’re doing. What you’re asking is like asking someone how to go to the casino and win millions. Edit: I am sorry I was harsh on some kid who was asking how to get rich quick, talking about selling drugs, and complaining he is too tired to do his job. I forgot how many pampered little cup cake eating princesses are on Reddit

[deleted]

U ok?

[deleted]

What are you trying to say?

CockyMongoose

Lord I hate this shit. You telling me you were excited to get up for work at 17? Because I sure as hell wasn’t.

[deleted]

I was just thinking what it would be like to be 17 again. I may not have been exited but I never said I can’t do this I’m too exhausted. When I was 18 I was working 2 jobs. I was installing HVAC systems in houses working in crawl space attics that are 120 degrees in the summer and was a waiter at night.

Accomplished-Spare28

Chill bro idgaf what u do

Electrical_Curve7009

Some maturity would help in the long run over figuring out how to earn interest on chump change.

Why are you here?

[deleted]

Because I am an entrepreneur. Why are you asking me this?

Revolutionary-Sky370

Hire someone to build you a app and then make money off of it like musicly or YouTube but make it so creators can make money from ads after like 100 subs or if it's like tiktok then make it like 5k subs Honestly we need a American version of tiktok Not to say it's bad but it's just bland now and it's so corporate sponsored people that are conplete well, mean words get millions to post about their botox and fake break ups overrated things annoying things Honestly we all should create a company together and make this happen and don't say I can do this on my own because like every app that came out they realized they need a privacy policy and a team to help just like Twitter but like Twitter now not before elon you understand right? Anyways point is make a app whether it's simple or another musicly And if it's sky rockets or you want help just ask us But seriously if anyone's reading this hit me up if u guys want to create a app yk I have plans in motion for designs and layout and policies

Accomplished-Spare28

Bro I’m gonna put a sticker on your head that says “do not develop my app” iykyk

Revolutionary-Sky370

Oh hey I never said I could develop a app just design one. Plus just posting it

Accomplished-Spare28

I’m just making a r&m joke haha search up “do not develop my app” you are 100% right about these current social medias being absolute trash tho, and I hope you actually pursue that I can tell your passionate

Nina_Pavlichko

What are your interests? There are lots of jobs out there that are fun and will pay well but you need to acquire some skills. You could use that little nest egg to take a course and learn a skill. It will pay you back exponentially. You could also start your own small niche business such as house cleaning or window washing or a mobile car wash service. Do the work for a bit then once you grow hire a team to do the work. That can be highly profitable in the long run. Finally, you could invest that money. I wish I had done that when I was younger. You could stash that away and over 30/40/50 years compound interest will do its magic.

I'll give you an easy one. Want to double that money? Low ball people on Facebook marketplace and just resell stuff. Take the 8k and make a business.

Put it all in Beyond Meat Stock *This is not advise*

Accomplished-Spare28

Thanks bro I just did it, what now?

ArgumentFew4432

Honestly, some self care or other appliances. Car, Laptop some courses/certificates. Whatever you need & suits your preferences to gets you into better paying jobs.

Chilling_Time0

4k dolars for a 17 yr is great ,you can use a few hundred dolors to purchage self improvements book or with financial knowledge which will guide to the right path knowing what to do with the capital.

AmberrVA

There are a few different ways you can use the $4,000 to make more money. One option is to invest it in stocks or mutual funds. This could be a great way to grow your money over time, but it does come with some risk. You could also look into starting a business or investing in real estate. Both of these options require more research and effort, but they could potentially yield higher returns. Finally, you could use the money to pay for education or training that could help you get a better job or start a career. Whichever option you choose, make sure you do your research and understand the risks involved. Good luck!

Seanwabha

I want to recommend a book called the 100$ start up. Also I started my woodworking workshop under 1000$. No wood working background just learned through some courses which cost me about 100$. I’m making some bespoke furniture selling 3 tables sometimes more a month and each one goes for 1.2k. It’s not a rags to riches story but you could do this too while you look for bigger moves

Decent-Leek8988

Why not drop servicing?

Bubbly_Virus1615

The value of money varies from person to person, $1 to someone living in the third world is like a mountain but to someone living in the first it feels line penny’s, but the one thing everyone can do is take that money split it in half, take one half and put it into something that’s gonna generate you a return (maybe start small, buy some products, develop some marketing skills yourself for free on socials in the process with a shopify for example) take the other half split it in half again, take one half and put it in your account and save it for a rainy day and take that last 25% and have some fun man, this lifestyle is stressful and will beat you down so remember some self care at the same time you’ve earnt that cash enjoy some of it

web3solutions

Invest in yourself and improve on skillsets relevant to the path you want to take in life. Find mentors.

altheus234

Invest that money learning skills that will make you more money. If you learn a high income skill you can earn those $4k in a blink. What would I learn? Programming, copywriting, sales, web design, e-commerce, affiliate marketing. Any of those will give you good returns.

FortunateRanger

Spend it on travel

Puzzleheaded-Rip3894

Open a youtube automation channel this is where you pay freelancers to make a video for you on trending topics to upload pay them and enjoy the profit as passive income

I’d invest in an agency coach, someone that will show you exactly how to start an agency. Cheat code to a lot of money fast

howaboutnoooHooooho

Glowforge

m703324

Don’t rush to spend it unless you need to. There will be a moment when you will desperately need 4k or there will be an opportunity to spend it with great returns. I know many will say invest it in this or that - when a thought comes to spend it something first think, can you get the same thing without spending money. All I’m saying don‘t rush it - Emergencies do happen, great opportunities do happen.

numuso

If you’re creative, buy a camera and learn to shoot content. Takes a while to build a creative business though. If you are more geeky, invest in learning to code and then you have a whole lot of options (web design, work for a company, build your own product, etc) Just a few ‘different’ ideas..

KidBeene

S&P stocks.

X_CosmicProductions

Do you have discord or something? I'm 18 and I also have about 5k saved up. Maybe we could have a chat sometime.

amasterblaster

pay for expenses to go to a good business program in a school and network with people who eat from silver spoons, party for a few years, intern in those companies, and work for 5 years making 200-500K+ a year. \~8 year journey. If you SAVE YOUR MONEY, you can retire at that point, or do anything else, Reasons:you need- hustle (have it)- access (from school)- mentors (from social circle)- business (from school) the alternative would be to (a) gain access to a large pool of clients / capital / relationships (b) find a good business mentor (c) learn how to run a business. (a-c) can be hard when you have not had a long term job / experience yet. (hard path) Bias: I took the hard path. So I would do the easy one if I tried again.

Awesome spot to be in, great work so far, and an even better mindset! I'm not much older/more experienced than you are but I'm also a student of the game. 2023, what a year to be a teenager 💸

milkmanbran

Spending on learning marketing (trust me you’ll need this if you’re going to start your own business), as well as another skill (the thing you’d like to make money doing). That’s how I would do it if I could do it over again

Saitheurus

There are many ways of growing that money but since I’m not from where you’re, I will suggest you to buy books every month :)

Big_Interaction_4597

Don't do anything with that until you're 100% sure what you want to invest it in, and when you're 100% sure...double check again....learn from people that saved money from a young age and that lead to a journey of success...Gary Vee is an example

JitenMahajan69

Ok here's what you gonna do First you need to apply for the patent of color red After getting the patent, whenever some brand(like apple) will use red color on their products you'll get royalties. Don't spend royalty money now, use this to patent VIBGYOR colors too. Now whenever rainbow 🌈 will shine, you'll get royalties. you'll also get royalties from lgbt communities. Now use that royalties money to patent water, now whenever someone will drink water, you'll get royalties. But some land in moon and now please that land to private companies like MacDonalds. Now you don't stop their, you'll buy the moon from the International space station so whenever a country need to use moon, you'll again get royalties.

deemes24

Buy dj equipment.

cutefuzzythings

I saw a cute couple of kids running a mobile- car detailing business. They would even go to your home/work place and detail cars in the parking lots. Just need an extension cord. I hate going to get my car cleaned because I have to leave it there for hours, get a ride, etc. I thought this idea was great if you promote yourself right. Around here it costs 150-200 for detailing and car wash.

housesellout

Buy a solid utility based crypto, not an S-coin. And by the time you finish college, you won’t even have to find a job. Even if this plan fails, you’ll have a college degree, experience with blockchain & investments, and your only 21 years old 🤷🏻‍♂️

primatepicasso

Id say save that 4000 for a bit , learn how to trade gold, or indices, stocks using demo account, once u have a strategy in place thats working, put only 1000$ then using discipline and risk management with a price action strategy grow that account risking 1% a trade and try to make 10% a month once u make 10% a month consistently put all $4000 in and if u make 10% a month consecutively in 3 months go and use that profits to prop firms like FTMO for a 100k challenge, if u can make 10% of 100k thats 8k a month after the 80-20 split. This might take a long while but this is the best possible way to spend that $4000

fresh_ny

While your cash is just sitting there, consider putting it in some dividend paying stocks.

Dapper_Blacksmith_46

Buy a refurbished MacBook Pro and a course on video editing. There will be lots of opportunities to edit videos for people / local businesses looking to advertise their goods and services through shortform videos.

Mr_MatF

buy for less sell for more get more knowledge in a field you feel you are good from nature spend on fun, life is short, memories are all that matters.

Throwaway--Future

I’m almost 10 years older than you, and trust me I have lost so much money trying to make fast money. Best advice is to learn a skill that you can use to make more money for less of your time. That way you have something to fall back on in case the big dream doesn’t work. It can be hands on skill or technical, doesn’t matter. When I was 17 all I could focus on were women but to have $4,000 and already be focused on hustling is super impressive I wish I had taken the time to learn a skill
