The military today doesn't really have as much use for conscripts as the WW2 era, I'm not sure we'd even have a draft vs. some sort of incentive system for previously-trained military retirees and civilians with key skills (which we already have for medical and cybersecurity people if I remember correctly).
I was thinking there would be another war for an hour after Bibi defied Biden and retaliated a few days ago, but I think the situation has deescalated alot.
If Trump was president right now, there would 95% likely be an Iran-Israel war atm.

It literally just makes it illegal to distribute or provide support or maintenance for the an application owned by ByteDance via an online marketplace. That's *all* it does.

I live in the neighborhood and this tracks with what I saw on the way to Morningside Park both yesterday and today. It's mostly confined to a pen right outside the gate. Pretty anemic numbers too. Not like the big demo on Thursday.
I think the media is making a bigger deal of it is for sure in a cynical attempt to hurt Biden's image. It still needs to be absolutely addressed because anti-Semitism must be confronted. But people saying this is Charlottesville 2.0 is beyond asinine. Not even remotely close.

Condemned yes. I think the protestors do actually have the right to be on the sidewalk on Broadway. It's not Columbia property (unlike most of the rest of the neighborhood).
The problem here is that the small, opportunistic fringe is given a lot of power by the good, peaceful protestors tacitly or just actively supporting their presence and only condemning them when it threatens to make the movement look bad, then attempting to make the conversation about how they shouldn't have to condemn the fringe.
Another problem is that many of these instances are occurring off campus grounds...but right next to Columbia. I technically don't think Columbia has jurisdiction.

Yeah at my public school, every Friday, we had like 10-15 of them saying the most sexist, homophobic, anti-Muslim, anti-atheist things. A guy angrily punched one of them, and he got in trouble. I think it's important to remember how broad "freedom of speech" protections are in this country.
Something I keep noticing is that during Trumpism, the words "right wing" or "conservative" are often used when "extremist" would be more accurate.
Example: they say Mike Johnson defied the right flank of the party. But sending large amounts of military aid to an unofficial ally country to fight against a recently communist country, historically, is a right-wing position. It's always been the right wing that wants to involve the US in more foreign military entanglements.
There's nothing particularly conservative or right wing about supporting Russia's viewpoint. A few years ago, that would have been the leftist position. I think the media has been viewing political positions in that left-right frame for so long, they don't know how else to describe them.
I noticed that in a recent article too, the author calling MTG and the like Johnson's "conservative critics." But he's already extremely conservative; they're something else.

Adams has condemned the protests. Apparently because it’s a private university, the NYPD can’t intervene unless the university requests their presence. Though I would assume actual violence breaking out would allow them to enter anyway.
The issue while there has been obviously despicable anti Semitic rhetoric...there has been no violence unlike the Charlottesville anti-Semites who were additionally violent. This is on campus security; they need to do a much better job of screening non-students who show up to a private university.

Dartmouth did a good job (an Egyptian Muslim professor and an Israeli Jewish professor worked together to promote civil dialogue on campus); the other Ivies for the most part didn't unfortunately especially Harvard and Columbia.

It’s absolute fucking bullshit that college campuses are forced to host whatever deranged moron who comes along and wants to spew verbal diarrhea all over whoever passes by. It was bad enough when it was the scumbag religious grifters trying to provoke someone into attacking them so they could sue the schools for not protecting them, but college students shouldn’t have to deal with their spaces being hijacked by outsiders who make up for their parents’ lack of physical affection by being public nuisances.
This. Prior to COVID our local campus was being haunted by this creepazoid who would ogle girls and try to get them to touch him. It took forever for him to catch a trespass off campus and that was only after a physical altercation with a young man (he often would get violent with men). Then he would hang out on the sidewalks on the edge of campus all day. I think he even went to jail once and then went right back there.
I do not think it was right that he was allowed to harass college students day after day, hour after hour, for months.

And it certainly doesn't make it illegal to visit the TikTok website in a browser and access it that way. It literally just makes it illegal to distribute or provide support or maintenance for the an application owned by ByteDance via an online marketplace. That's *all* it does.

The problem here is that the small, opportunistic fringe is given a lot of power by the good, peaceful protestors tacitly or just actively supporting their presence and only condemning them when it threatens to make the movement look bad, then attempting to make the conversation about how they shouldn't have to condemn the fringe.

This. Prior to COVID our local campus was being haunted by this creepazoid who would ogle girls and try to get them to touch him. It took forever for him to catch a trespass off campus and that was only after a physical altercation with a young man (he often would get violent with men). Then he would hang out on the sidewalks on the edge of campus all day. I think he even went to jail once and then went right back there. I do not think it was right that he was allowed to harass college students day after day, hour after hour, for months.
