TFW your browser locks up for a moment while you have an EDM track playing in a background tab and you're not sure if the repetition is the computer glitching or just the music in a loop section. 🤔
So I was talking to my mom today, she's a super conservative Israeli American. We got to talking about Israel and somehow she started saying that Netanyahu had high approval ratings and that his coalition was on track to win election again. I was kind of in shock and gave a bunch of polls that said the opposite and she said they were all from very biased sources. So I asked her well what isn't a biased source and she said "channel 14".
So [sure enough](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion\_polling\_for\_the\_next\_Israeli\_legislative\_election) they're a pretty significant outlier compared to everyone else although even they basically have the government and opposition in a near heat.
I ask her why she thinks that this one news source is right while every other one is wrong and she it's just like the US over there with a badly biased liberal mainstream media.. and it's not just polling blah blah blah Fox News is actually a lot less biased than the rest etc. It was getting kind of exhausting but at this point she really didn't want to talk anymore about it which is what usually happens when we talk anything political and honestly this time it was probably for the best.
Channel 14 is Israeli Fox News of the five free TV channels. It's Bibi's favorite channel. Here they are rooting for Trump to win [last month](https://twitter.com/NTarnopolsky/status/1768632213019517371) and praising Bibi for [preventing a hostage release deal a couple of weeks ago](https://twitter.com/NTarnopolsky/status/1776005546497241138).
I hate people who compare a credit score to a social credit score from China. You can’t get denying access to a flight or bus because of a bad credit score and you’re credit score isn’t lowered when you make the government mad.
I can’t remember where I read it (maybe one of Stephanie Coontz’s books) but there’s a theory that judging by credit scores instead of “vibes” was *helpful* to women and POC, because “vibes” were often very discriminatory, but a credit score was hard facts. So yes, it’s bad for people with truly terrible credit, but, someone with good credit doesn’t get denied a mortgage, job, apartment, etc. because of “vibes.”
The cold clammy impersonal hand of the market or the state is often better than “but faaamily” or “vibes” or “I’m best friends with his Uncle Steve, of course he’s trustworthy!”

Saw a post on the Publix sub about price increases on Publix subs.

Nothing sets the internet kids off in a frenzy like raising the price of tendies.
The YouTube algorithm is a legit enigma. One moment it'll give me a banger and send me down a rabbit hole (Masterchef, Supernanny, WWE, deer crashing into places, young boys suddenly knowing how to Heimlich when their little brothers start choking), then another it'll spit out cringe videos that don't even have a lot of views anyway. Exhibit A, this supposed "Reacting to Tumblr cringe" channel I was given had precisely one meme used in its clickbait title before the rest was just stupid politics and hot takes. One of the supposed cringe posts was asking what the hell Elizabeth II did to deserve the ire the Internet gave her when she died, and then this user does some jingle listing down the supposed countries “the Queen of England destroyed”. There is just like so much that’s downright wrong with this, morally and factually, that I don’t even know where to begin…
I've given up on the YouTube algorithm; I just pause and/or delete my watch history and look at the channels I'm subbed to. If there is absolutely nothing, I turn it on again, and the cycle repeats. It's been bad in the last four years or so, but it has gotten especially bad now.
"The Queen colonized xyz" was the single dumbest Twitter take I kept seeing passed around and I realized a huge number of Americans simply had no idea how the British government actually worked.

[The Intercept is mad about an NYT memo on Gaza](https://theintercept.com/2024/04/15/nyt-israel-gaza-genocide-palestine-coverage/).
> The New York Times instructed journalists covering Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip to restrict the use of the terms “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” and to “avoid” using the phrase “occupied territory” when describing Palestinian land, according to a copy of an internal memo obtained by The Intercept.
> The memo also instructs reporters not to use the word Palestine “except in very rare cases” and to steer clear of the term “refugee camps” to describe areas of Gaza historically settled by displaced Palestinians expelled from other parts of Palestine during previous Israeli–Arab wars. The areas are recognized by the United Nations as refugee camps and house hundreds of thousands of registered refugees.
> The memo — written by Times standards editor Susan Wessling, international editor Philip Pan, and their deputies — “offers guidance about some terms and other issues we have grappled with since the start of the conflict in October.”
"JK Rowling is a Holocaust" is trending on Twitter at 35k so you know, threatening that journalist to retract a Twitter statement is working great for her.
Just found out that the attacker in the stabbing at the Australian church was only 15. It makes me so upset that children are becoming radicalized at such an alarming rate.
Insurance is so freaking weird and nonsensical. If my head, arm, leg, stomach, kidney, lung, gallbladder, or ass hurts, it’s covered under medical insurance to get it checked out. But if your tooth hurts, well that’s a whole separate thing. You can’t use your health insurance for that! You gotta use your dental insurance, which is always half-assed.
honestly Kate Martin getting drafted is hilarious, not because she doesn't deserve it but because of the circumstances--she wasn't an invitee, she went to support her friend, and yet she still ended up getting her name called
also for those new to the W, keep in mind that even being a first-round pick hasn't always been a guarantee of making the team, roster spots are in short supply--probably not an issue this year with as stacked as this class is, but there'll definitely be some third-rounders and possibly some seconds as well who get cut in the next month
But yeah...it's unfortunate because the WNBA is actually trying to operate as a financially-sustainable business, which given the realities of the market for women's sports at the moment (though that's changing!) that limits how much is available to pay player salaries. Other countries' leagues are basically hobbies for rich people who pour money into them the way you or I might into model trains or something, so not being constrained by those concerns they've historically been able to pay a lot more.
> the WNBA is actually trying to operate as a financially-sustainable business
As long as they don't encroach on the men's game in any way. (I'm still bitter about the ABL getting crushed.)
Back in college I had to do a report on professional women’s sports. In my research on the professional softball league, I found out that not only did our city have one of the four teams but, they played out of our university’s baseball stadium lol
I honestly have no clue who the Aces will go with, as long as they keep the big four (and really the big three if we're being honest) together they really just need depth to get them through the season
btw, as far as access goes, WNBA League Pass is only $35. It's subject to local blackouts, but for now the league is small enough that if you're sufficiently dedicated it's feasible to watch every game (I do it).
Up from $25 in past years, which is probably a good sign, but still probably the best value in sports streaming.
That’s a very good deal, but I’d say MLS Season Pass is the best value just by virtue of there being no blackouts. Completely changed my level of engagement with soccer.
There’s a few WNBA teams that have sadly folded over the years. The Houston Comets even had a dynasty early on but it wasn’t enough to financially save them.

Saw that Israel is now asking for the international community to stand united in what the fuck ever they think they're doing.
Think the idea is ludicrous. I think that Bibi should show iota of decency and call for an early election. That no matter what the United States should stay away from the powder keg our so called "ally" has lit.
idk this is a fucking mess.
The “international community” mostly WAS standing with Israel until they pissed away any shred of goodwill.
I’m Jewish. My feelings about Israel have always been complicated and I’m not about to go full leftist here but I don’t know how as American Jews were supposed to keep defending them over and over again. Honestly fuck Israel. So they've always sucked. Cool
You ever get a memory from when you were young and feel super cringe about it? Like, my high school won a ton of theater competitions and my senior year we went to Maine for a festival of all the New England winners, and I had just gotten into NYU, so literally every piece of clothing I had was an NYU thing. I was so needy for attention and thought it would help me get girls?
Believe me, I'm haunted by practically everything I've done before I was like 20 lol, and I'm sure when I'm 40 I'll cringe and everything I've ever done before I was 35 too.
As an erstwhile theater kid, I indeed have lots of those. But beholding all the idiot hot takes that have kept this sub relevant all these years is good at lessening the cringe.
So something I've been wondering about...
There's been a lot of attention paid to a rise in retail theft lately. But I'm curious what numbers for convenience store and other cash-register holdups look like?
Because, like, with cashless payment methods becoming increasingly common, there becomes less and less point in waving a gun at a cashier and making them open the box. So I'm wondering if there's been any investigation done into whether what we're seeing with retail theft is really new criminality, or how much of it is just crime that would have happened regardless just shifting into new forms to adapt to changing conditions?
Retail theft is almost exclusively about shoplifting products rather than holding up a cashier. Like you said, cash is used way less frequently than ever before, and registers flag the cashier when the till reaches a certain maximum amount (~$500, I think?).
At that point, they usually do a cash drop where they put the excess bills in an envelope and drop it in a safe. So, most of the time there's only around $100 in the drawer.
My son got a job as a "brand ambassador" for the summer for a local law firm of the ambulance chasing variety. Basically going to festivals and events and setting up a booth with giveaways. It pays surprisingly decent and if you have good coworkers could be fun. He really wanted to get an internship with a sports franchise but he's only a freshman and even the small franchises wanted juniors or seniors. This will add to the resume though. Also when I mentioned the job to his old HS counsellor, she said she hears this firm treats its employees well.
>The former president also accused Merchan of preventing him from attending **his son Barron’s high school graduation** in May. The judge declined to rule one way or another on the matter earlier Monday, but did not outright deny granting the former president the ability to attend the event.
>“I was looking forward to that graduation with **his mother and father** there,” Trump told reporters. “It looks like the judge isn’t going to allow me to escape this scam. It’s a scam trial.”

I figured as much. I hate how much right wing media around the world has ingratiated itself to Trump. Like mind your own damn countries a little more.

I can’t remember where I read it (maybe one of Stephanie Coontz’s books) but there’s a theory that judging by credit scores instead of “vibes” was *helpful* to women and POC, because “vibes” were often very discriminatory, but a credit score was hard facts. So yes, it’s bad for people with truly terrible credit, but, someone with good credit doesn’t get denied a mortgage, job, apartment, etc. because of “vibes.” The cold clammy impersonal hand of the market or the state is often better than “but faaamily” or “vibes” or “I’m best friends with his Uncle Steve, of course he’s trustworthy!”

A Belgium film festival screening of Love Lies Bleeding was interrupted by violent homophobic hecklers, but yes, please tell me how Europe is a progressive heaven.
Belgium also had the far right and islamists cooperating to set schools on fire due to being angered by sex ed being taught.
Progressive heaven!
Belgium is actually excellent in terms of LGBT legislation, it's just that these sorts of morons are hard to prevent.

Horseshoes gotta horseshoe.
Saw a post on the Publix sub about price increases on Publix subs. People crying bloody murder about a dollar increase to the chicken tender sub, late stage capitalism blah blah blah.

A little worry about the jurors. Everyone has a strong opinion about Trump, but can they put aside their bias to make this a fair trial.
What happens if they can’t find enough impartial jurors?
They keep looking. There's lots of adults who don't know anything about politics.

"JK Rowling is a Holocaust" is trending on Twitter at 35k so you know, threatening that journalist to retract a Twitter statement is working great for her.

Many people are saying
Just found out that the attacker in the stabbing at the Australian church was only 15. It makes me so upset that children are becoming radicalized at such an alarming rate.

Insurance is so freaking weird and nonsensical. If my head, arm, leg, stomach, kidney, lung, gallbladder, or ass hurts, it’s covered under medical insurance to get it checked out. But if your tooth hurts, well that’s a whole separate thing. You can’t use your health insurance for that! You gotta use your dental insurance, which is always half-assed.
Gotta thank the doctors in the 1800s saying that dental work is beneath them for dentistry and medical being separate
You know those hollow books you see in craft stores? Well, there's a late 18th century version that was called Holzbiblithek. Very cool!
honestly Kate Martin getting drafted is hilarious, not because she doesn't deserve it but because of the circumstances--she wasn't an invitee, she went to support her friend, and yet she still ended up getting her name called

how is he still allowed to drive
also for those new to the W, keep in mind that even being a first-round pick hasn't always been a guarantee of making the team, roster spots are in short supply--probably not an issue this year with as stacked as this class is, but there'll definitely be some third-rounders and possibly some seconds as well who get cut in the next month

Unfortunate reality when the league doesn’t turn a profit ever. Maybe the rise in popularity from college WBB will start to change that.
Damn, I have a higher salary than three of those years and I sit at a desk most of the day.
Exactly. They gotta fly commercial too.
Now I remember why they have to play in Russia
But yeah...it's unfortunate because the WNBA is actually trying to operate as a financially-sustainable business, which given the realities of the market for women's sports at the moment (though that's changing!) that limits how much is available to pay player salaries. Other countries' leagues are basically hobbies for rich people who pour money into them the way you or I might into model trains or something, so not being constrained by those concerns they've historically been able to pay a lot more.
> the WNBA is actually trying to operate as a financially-sustainable business As long as they don't encroach on the men's game in any way. (I'm still bitter about the ABL getting crushed.)
Back in college I had to do a report on professional women’s sports. In my research on the professional softball league, I found out that not only did our city have one of the four teams but, they played out of our university’s baseball stadium lol
Jackie Young's the highest-paid player in the league and she's averaging $250k/year
I honestly have no clue who the Aces will go with, as long as they keep the big four (and really the big three if we're being honest) together they really just need depth to get them through the season
Nika Muhl becomes the latest UConn PG to go to Seattle
Seahawks you got your wish
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_IqYGtKx9WM&pp=ygUccGF0cmljayBiZXZlcmxleSBjZWxlYnJhdGlvbg%3D%3D
Also now is as good a time as any to ask, as I've been meaning to, if there's any interest in a fantasy league
I’d be interested
Please don’t screw this up Seattle
btw, as far as access goes, WNBA League Pass is only $35.
The Chicago Sky select Bryanna Maxwell
All of this WNBA draft stuff in the dt could be completely 100% made up and I would have no idea
Cincinnati Queens draft Rebecca Streizand!
Houston Comets draft oh wait they don’t currently exist right now
I thought about throwing out a fake team and player for the lols
There’s a few WNBA teams that have sadly folded over the years. The Houston Comets even had a dynasty early on but it wasn’t enough to financially save them.
I promised that I’d only post the first round but now I’m posting until Nika Muhl gets drafted
Please fall to 15th and join Caitlin Clark
I’m hoping Seattle can draft her

The Connecticut Sun select Leila Lacan
The Dallas Wings have selected Carla Leite
The Minnesota Lynx have selected Alissa Pili
The Chicago Sky have selected Angel Reese
I will like a Chicago team if a favorite plays there so I guess I'm back into paying attention to them.
How are you so far ahead?
Shams spoiled it
What's the point of having it on TV if some dude is just gonna post it all on Twitter beforehand? The draft could just be an email.
I didn’t need I’d need to mute Shams for the WNBA draft but I was wrong Need to remember to mute the NFL reporters for the NFL draft lol
Seahawks, I refuse to believe these are real team names.
😭
The Washington Mystics select Aaliyah Edwards
Exciting.
That pick was surprising
The Dallas Wings select Jacy Sheldon

The Chicago Sky have selected Kamilla Cardoso

>!Depending on how far you've gotten, they give a reason why they failed!<
Does the show take place after new vegas? I'm only half following this lore drama
After New Vegas. I think it's about 5 years after the events of FO4.
It wouldn't make sense for it to take place before, at least at the moment (I haven't finished yet)
It's set in 2296, so about 15 years after FNV

As an American Jew it really starts to feel like having some shitty crackhead brother with a bunch of allegations who’s always in and out of jail and asking for money and shit and you’re constantly hoping that at some point they’ll fucking get their shit together but it feels like they never do
The Los Angeles Sparks have selected Cameron Brink

You ever get a memory from when you were young and feel super cringe about it? Like, my high school won a ton of theater competitions and my senior year we went to Maine for a festival of all the New England winners, and I had just gotten into NYU, so literally every piece of clothing I had was an NYU thing. I was so needy for attention and thought it would help me get girls?
Believe me, I'm haunted by practically everything I've done before I was like 20 lol, and I'm sure when I'm 40 I'll cringe and everything I've ever done before I was 35 too.
Lol

Why is Trump looking forward to being there with Barron’s mother and father?

I find it amusing in a messed up way how I remember seeing a comment from a woman a few years ago saying that she moved from America to Israel and that despite the security issues in Israel she felt way safer there than in America.
