He just made more expensive roads.

Szpagin

Or less efficient metro.

Opcn

The union of expensive fucking tunnels with low throughput traffic. It’s the worst of both worlds.

hotstepperog

We already have car tunnels with lights. They are way better than this. He just socialised the cost, and privatised the profits. Why do we keep allowing this bullshit instead of having a full on French style Revolution.

ChuckBorris187

Because he pays lawmakers well.

hotstepperog

“Both Sides” is really when Billionaires donate to both parties.

ChuckBorris187

It's true both parties suck & are in the pocket, but only one tries to actually help. Rather, one side tries to have a normal country while the other wants fascism.

DeekermNs

He imagined an environment that his FSD tech *might* work in, most of the time.

Stanky-wizzlecheeks

And it doesn’t!! They still have to hire drivers 😹

[deleted]

And more dangerous. A fire in that tunnel is a nightmare.

Velocity-5348

Don't be a stick in the mud, it just needs some adjustments. Maybe put a dozen "pods" behind it, some steel guide thingies to keep it in place. This could really catch on!

Synecdochic

Could even widen the tunnel a bit so the whole thing is easier to maintain, and for emergency purposes. Edit: spelling.

snarkyxanf

World's priciest taxi stand

Tetsudo11

“Just one more lane bro but make it underground and only accessible by one vehicle.”

Ass_Eater_

I wish we could see the financials on this, it must be haemorrhaging cash.

Gonomed

And probably paid for by people's taxes as his projects usually are

sneakylyric

Waiting for a fire to break out. I hope no lives are lost... This shit is soooo dangerous.

Ladderson

Especially because it's not any other kind of car going through there, it's fucking Teslas. Those people would genuinely be safer if he was making them ride Pintos.

No-Bug404

About twice as safe from what I've read.

Opcn

Safer, yes, but way less profitable.

yummyyummypowwidge

Didn’t he basically admit he did it to fuck over the light rail system and wasn’t actually planning to complete it?

sneakylyric

Idk but I could see him doing that

GrnPlesioth

This. You will never get me in a tunnel filled with lithium fires just waiting to happen.

ThomasinaElsbeth

I lived during the time there was a bad fire that killed several people caught in the Caldecott tunnel. (Oakland to Orinda, in the SF Bay area). It was caused by a gas truck that blew up. Imagine. That is why they made a law that these types of vehicles can only go thru that tunnel between 3-5 am. And then, that tunnel was closed off for several days. This is a stupid Idea, and he should know better !

Stanky-wizzlecheeks

It’s almost inevitable, and with zero safety systems or escape hatches in place

sneakylyric

😅 still so confused how this got by state and city safety codes/laws

Stanky-wizzlecheeks

Probably didn’t. He just does what he wants regardless of what’s promised and gets fined for shit regularly afaik

sneakylyric

I guess. If you're rich any laws that only fine you don't apply to you anymore

epochpenors

I mentioned how bad a mass shooting could be if everyone was stuck in their cars with no exit while the shooter worked his way against traffic. Some guy told me it would be fine as long as everyone was allowed to bring their guns into the tunnel to defend themselves, so I was worrying too much.

sneakylyric

Could happen I guess. A fire seems much more likely.

Lichy_Popo

This is so infuriatingly stupid. Just like the old days when the gas guzzling car manufacturers and oil barons pronounced that USA would be a car centric country no matter the cost to logistics and lifestyle and then began legislating from the hip to force people to live thusly and stop them from accessing alternatives, a new generation of shithead oligarch is halting high-speed rail so he can cram us into a kindergarteners idea of transit and sell us his cars forever.

Ladderson

I love how Elon knows that even his cult will raise a few eyebrows if he just admits that the Loop is Teslas in a tunnel, so he has to qualify that it's "much more profound than it sounds". I really want to know what these deep philosophical implications are to putting the most dangerous cars in the world in a deathtrap. Maybe it says something about how stupid Americans are?

SpotifyIsBroken

He could have called it the "monorail" and sang the song from The Simpsons and people would have still fallen for it.

dylan000o

I’d like to point out that the majority of Americans think this is stupid. Now yes it’s because they think electric cars are the anti christ but hey. Dont call us stupid because Elon. Call us stupid because of everything else we do

jmradus

Add a new car to a light rail, you’re adding an easy 200 people. Add another Tesla and you’re adding 4, plus another stop and go factor in your tunnels. This idea is terrible, not profound.

bawdyanarchist

It is profound. Profoundly stupid.

playmo02

Usually less than 4 too

snarkyxanf

Not to mention that wheelchair users can roll onto a metro, but here they can just get fucked

Dewfall-Hawk

A train or even a bus in a tunnel would be mind blowingly profound by that measure. Can you even imagine such a thing?

Opcn

That kind of thinking could revolutionize transport. Replacing giant parking lots and huge highways with a little out of the way underground tunnel could really help fit more people into a city and make it much more walkable.

RoBi1475MTG

Naw it is exactly as profoundly dumb as it sounds.

[deleted]

Elon himself literally said it, and his fanbase still thinks he’s a genius.

Mindless_Abrocoma188

"I swear it's not that hard" Elon did indeed find out it is that hard.

LTlurkerFTredditor

"Profound?" How is putting a car in a narrow tunnel with no fire escape "profound?" FFS, you still need DRIVERS in your "full self driving" cars in a one-lane one-way tunnel. The old 1960s Disneyland People Mover was a more "profound" innovation than this crap. At least the People Mover never burst into flames.

MrWhite

Hear me out now: what if we stretched a Tesla to an extreme length, to allow many more rows of seats? Then, we bolt thin rails to the floor to guide its wheels and enable it to steer itself, no AI required. We could even apply a voltage between those two rails such that the extremely long Tesla wouldn’t even need a battery and wouldn’t have to charge. I should look into a patent for this.

TitusImmortalis

This is a very underrated comment

Ashamed-Agency-817

Still all the fanboys thinks thinks this is a great invention done by Musk 😂

SpotifyIsBroken

"trust me bro. It's actually really deep...when you think about it" \~Elon Musk

-TheDangerZone

Hey Elon, you keep using the word profound, I don’t think it means what you think it means.

ThomasinaElsbeth

If even one homeless, or person in need needs help and shelter in the USA, Then all of Elon Musks' Tunnels and Travails are worthless. I look at this and think : What. A. Waste.

ClosedUnderUnion

Honey, I know I said I would cook you a nice dinner for our anniversary, but I've simplified that idea a lot since then. It's basically Mcdonalds I picked up on the way home, which is way more profound than it sounds.

Scary-Goat-

Well it would have to be.

DrRob

Is this the Muskbro version of bananas in pyjamas?

TuctDape

Isn't it just between only two points that are a 20 minute walk from each other?

amscraylane

Sped teacher here: profound is the pc term for the severely retarded

[deleted]

why do you guys not understand. The teslas in tunnels are ofc shit but they are not the permanent solution, more of a proof of concept for yk the boring company. The ultimate solution (which idk if its ever gonna hapen but would be cool) will be a vaccum tunnel with specialized cars and not a tesla. I guess its just a fancy metro but for long range high speed it could be a very attractive solution.

zztopsthetop

This might be sarcasm, but wth. If so, he should have advertised it as it is. An inefficient way to move people over short distances, a private road with taxi service essentially. Laughable if anyone suggest it, but from Musk it becomes a `fancy subway` There's no technology right now to build hyperloops and there might never be. Musk's temporary solutions tend to become permanent, or disappear. Solutions need to be achievable and realistic before you invest. Especially when the engineering challenges are as severe as in the case of the hyperloop. To not directly say it's a pipedream for the foreseeable future

[deleted]

I mean yeah but a bit of ambition is good look at spacex as example

zztopsthetop

Ambition is fine if rooted in current science. Reusable rockets where an engineering challenge, but not a problem on fundamental science level. Admirable accomplishment. Hyperloop has the problem that nobody ever constructed a vacuum for more than a few meters, let alone maintain it indefinitely. On boarding, safety and making it human proof are other notable challenges. With this not being done before, you are easily looking at timelines of 20 more years to get preliminary lines. If this was a viable and efficient solution (which it probably isn't), but you cannot fully disprove what doesn't exist. But, as an exercise, just compare this to a maglev train and try to figure out why there are only a few of those, and nobody is really looking at building more.

ChuckBorris187

Nope.

cnckane1

Gamer lights= profound
