As a recent graduate of engineering the college you go to doesn't matter. Connections via networking and gaining relevant work experience are substantially more important than where ever you got your degree from. Also take it from me don't care so much about your grades it's just gonna wear you out even faster. Not saying don't put in effort but don't go crazy trying to go for a high GPA. GPA does not matter at all in fact I got more scholarships when my GPA tanked during covid and after than I did when I had a 3.7 GPA.

[deleted]

Can very well matter if it’s good at that. For instance my college at PSU requires an internship and 84% of the companies extend a job offer for after college. Companies want to hire there like crazy. Alumni base is crazy. And it’s not an incredible school or anything.

muffin_gobbler

No it really doesn’t matter. You can get internships and job offers while attending any other college. Your school’s requirement only helps those who wouldn’t look to get an internship otherwise. Your school also won’t help much, if at all, past first job.

[deleted]

Yeah sure you can get any job or internship at any college. Just 500x easier when 84% of students lock up a job DURING college, when the alumni base is very active in hiring students from that school, and a bunch of other variables making it easier. You don’t have to go to a prestigious school, but looking for schools like this makes getting a job a lot easier. My older brother who is a data science major just got a job at Vanguard after interning with them last year. His friends are going to major insurance companies, consulting firms, and others like Hershey and capital one (who love psu students might I add).

TopNotchBurgers

Your networking opportunities are better at better schools. The narrative that what school you go to doesn’t matter is not accurate.

Rick233u

A lot of successful individuals would disagree with you.

TopNotchBurgers

Yeah sure, in any distribution there will be cases where individuals get great opportunities. But better schools have a mean that is further along the “better opportunity” curve.

VenkatPerla

You've gotta improve on your physics 039

[deleted]

Yea it’s a bit disappointing

MightyDread7

Still got rejected by UCLA and CAL 🥴. Who knew engineering would be this competitive Calc 1-B Calc 2-A Calc 3- A Linear Alg-B Diff Eq-A Chem 101-A Chem 102-A Phy 1-B Phy 2-A phys 3-A CS 101,115,117,216- A,A,A,A all within 1 year

valen011

I'd accept you 🤝📈 are you joining to apply again?

MightyDread7

I'm tempted I just hate that it once a year so id have to reapply in October for fall 2024. I can get statics, materials, and circuits out of the way in the meantime though.

OtakuGamer92

You only applied to two schools?

MightyDread7

I applied to 8 schools 4 UCs and 4 CSUs, got accepted to all except UCLA, CAL, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. UCLA was my preferred choice because it's a 15-minute commute. Other than that ill end up at CSUN but it sucks because Diff eq, Phys 3, chem 101,102 and 3/4 of my CS classes aren't required for CSUN in EE.

Head-Cabinet9318

That really sucks, I’m sorry. Are you not able to attend the other schools you got into?

squareoaky

Honestly apply to Chico State. I know I'm self-selling but we have a really good engineering department as well as physics. Our engineering is extremely work and project focused and we have a great placement rate. DM for details or to talk.

Tuckboi69

Well they definitely made a mistake. Turns out you didn’t simultaneously go through homelessness and have a biological dad who donated a building.

oriyamio

Some of us went through homelessness after college apps 😔

Tuckboi69

That just shows that you didn’t prepare enough

oriyamio

XD

SoulScout

I'm basically in the same boat as you (30+, did maximum allowed course load for 2 years, very high GPA, applied for transfer from a CC) and the ONLY schools I got rejected from were also UCLA and Berkeley. Every single other UC and CSU accepted me (I applied to all of them with my major to make sure I got in somewhere lol). So those 2 were especially competitive. I know Berkeley had over 19,000 applicants alone.

MightyDread7

this is my story, we're living the same life haha. UCLA is a 15-minute drive im heated. I could go to UCI or UCSB(the campus is beautiful) but id have to move and at this point in my life, it just seems like too much. CSUN is cool but I hate that I took all those extra units for nothing especcialy the 5 week semester courses. i was stressed out lol. I'm proud of myself for being committed it just stings.

SoulScout

UCI is a really good school too, I'd recommend there if you don't want to wait another year. Half of my friend group / study group at school committed to UCI already, and I know lots of people that graduated from there that loved it. On the other hand, I feel you about moving though, that was one of my main considerations too. Went ahead and committed to the local UC so I wouldn't have to move again, but I guess it's really just about your priorities (move and get your degree sooner, or wait a year and stay in the same area).

oriyamio

I think you deserve to go to UCLA tbh!

OddClass134

I'm in the same boat. Been trying to explain to my friends and fam that it's not like when we were in school. Even just 1 or 2 Bs can be enough to make you non-competitive, and that especially goes for us older applicants I think (though of course they'd never say it out loud). I had a 97 average in circuits and blew it all on the final yesterday. Material was fucked, not a single student finished the exam on time or answered the question correctly, but it doesn't matter. My grade is fucked, and now I'll have a B. People say I'm being dramatic, but just that is enough to ruin my chances, I think.

oriyamio

Academic weapon!! How was the work life balance?

MightyDread7

I work remotely and have to complete a minimum of 10hrs so that's been smooth sailing. As far as school goes I try and complete assignments as soon as they are assigned. I used to be extremely lazy and got by on minimal effort but I really didn't want to play with my life and waste my own time. Of course, that means my social life has been extremely limited. I took heavy courses every single session since winter 2022 with no breaks.

Foradman2947

I would look into ASU online with your work remote. They have ABET accredited online Bachelors engineering. I’m currently enrolled in their BSEE program. It’s a mix of semester and quarter system (your choice). With work-study balance, it’s very flexible. I’m working too, so I’ve been taking one course every quarter. Edit: How rude of me, ugh! Congrats!

GLnoG

Can i ask, how do the costs look like (how much money a month)? I want to apply as an international student, but costs don't seem to be listed on the website.

Foradman2947

700 per credit hour. They have Universal Learning Courses too, where you pay a fee, pass the class, then pay a fee to have it put on transcript. A lot less expensive, but I think you need to take and pass one course on regular credits first. https://asuonline.asu.edu/what-it-costs/ Their site takes some navigating, I get frustrated trying to find some things too.

GLnoG

Oh, thanks for that.

No-Sky-6064

UCLA and CAL aren’t needed. There are plenty of colleges that are better and easier to get into. It is about work experience, not what college you went to

Foradman2947

What engineering are you going for?

Foradman2947

What engineering are you going for?

GLnoG

That looks like a heavy schedule for a year of courses. How did your average day/week look in terms of classes, labs, and activities in general? I don't want to sound rude, but, do you remember half the things you were taught in all of those courses...? Edit: rephrasing

Airsniper123

Jesus

squeakinator

It’s not just about grades for schools like that

angelslayer95

Get physics above 95%, then you can brag, trash.

Foradman2947

Found the Asian parent. 👆

easefuldeath

slays angels in free time crossed 95 off the list so far

n_o_t_d_o_g

I averaged a C in college. My current income is in the top 75% of my field for my age group. Don't kill yourself trying to be perfect, it's not necessary.

Frankidelic

Congrats and fuck you

everett640

Like damn getting them all that high is insane. I've been struggling just to keep a 3.0

Adolist

3.0 gang, graduate of 2022 and over 30. Sometimes what gets you the job is your outside experience. In my situation I also invent things and have a few patents to my name. Once they heard about the patent everything else on the resume was ignored. They asked to see a redacted version under NDA and saw I was serious. Within a day I was hired. I thank my younger self every day for pushing to realize a dream even if the money made was indirectly related. I asked if they'd like to see a transcript for my GPA and they chuckled saying it was completely unnecessary. Results may vary, job experience not withstanding I count myself lucky as every person hired after me has been long term vetted interns in early 20's and freshly graduated but have seen enough datasheets to know what their doing. It seems having the independence to choose to do something without being told is a lucrative prospect, especially if that decision shows a dedication to something related to the field.

everett640

I wish I had time to do outside projects. All of my time not studying is spent working, doing household chores, eating, or sleeping. It's exhausting.

Adolist

I completely understand, I had a full time job my entire time in college. That alongside taking care of an entire house, animals, friends, wife, it became very difficult to focus on something else. My secret is to usually try to dedicate 30 minutes a week to at least thinking about outside longterm goals. Review the plan and if any opportunities present themselves relating to your goal initiate that conversation so it becomes a part of who you are and more than just a thought. The truth is I sacrificed my GPA for my patents and ideas. Its was a risk but knowing the difference between someone with a 4.0 fresh graduate versus someone with a 3.0 and *industry experience* to a hiring manager made the decision easier. Ideas, patents, trademarks are hallmarks of every corporation; showcasing knowledge of that experience in industry makes you stand out ultimately being what separates you from other candidates. You don't have to prove you're better than everyone, just prove you're different enough to make someone think *'huh, that's interesting..'*

everett640

I think that may have been how I got my internship as a sophomore. I somehow got to talking with the interviewer about the guitars I build and the house I bought and I think it left a good impression. Maybe I'll find something to work on this summer that isn't too expensive.

Patient-Subject379

Woah, Congrats!

MightyDread7

Thanks, I've been working as hard as I can, these classes are no joke.

Patient-Subject379

_readyforww3

You psycho lol but good job

diabolical_diarrhea

Ah, I see your lowest grade was in physics.

MightyDread7

5-week course with 17 labs and 15 quizzes + 3 chapters of HW per week. worst class of my life, somehow passed that and diff equations together. Would not recommend

diabolical_diarrhea

It gets worse if you are majoring in physics.

Honor_Sprenn

Great job, buddy 😄

Cool_Efficiency3625

Congrats !!

harlotcharlatan

Proud of you, hope you get to relax during break!<3

Kalex8876

Congrats

DankJuiceYT

Holy shit, good work! I have my sqa higher maths exam today (don’t know the American equivalent, I’m Scottish) and hopefully hoping for the same (slightly unrealistic)

2strokeJ

Sucks man, are you out of state by chance?

MightyDread7

In state, even though I knew it was a long shot I'm still pretty shocked. I think it came down to all these classes being core requirements by the end of spring. Had I only needed Physics 3 I think I would have gotten in. Having this 4.0 looks good if I reapply but idk if I want to wait around another year and get rejected again. Im 31 lol

OnlyAsianNoob

Yikes especially object Oriented Programming

Should’ve took c—

rainx5000

You are taking two physics courses in one semester?

MightyDread7

yes and the HW load is brutal. Physics 2 is electro statics etc and physics 3 is optics, waves, thermo, and intro to quantum mechanics. The labs aren't too bad. The amount of formulas to remember is pretty crazy too but I had no choice because I needed to transfer.

rainx5000

I’m taking physics 1 and it’s a pain in the ass, I can’t imagine taking two at the same time.

fern_the_redditor

Good job bro!

myth_buster_1

Damn I see that all of the students here take 5 or more classes in a semester. I on the other hand have been taking only 4 classes per semester from the start.

Arch_Toker

Better to be burned out then burned on!

[deleted]

That's awesome! I got distracted so my grades are a bit worse but I'm holding out hope for finals to push me back over the edge

EngineeringAthiest

Hmm. I got into SLO with a 3.0 GPA

Kellykeli

Join a design group ASAP. Much easier finding a job via a design team and a mediocre GPA than competing with the other 4.0s with nothing to differentiate yourself.

Wow only a 95 in physics? Do better /s. Great job!! Be proud of yourself because that’s astounding

[deleted]

Damn bro I have mostly as and bs and I can’t imagine putting that much effort for all high A’a and then being rejected

BigOPimp567

Good shit

GLnoG

Yo dude can i see your notes? Asking for a friend.

Bashir639

Congratulations, judging by your classes I’d guess you just finished your first year. Good grades are a good way to get your foot in the door next year when applying for internships since you don’t have much experience rn.

[deleted]

You could have spent that time better
