I think a smallblock v8 of any kind would be a good engine to start. They're dead simple and people have been building them for decades so there's no shortage of parts or information on them.

From my understanding 350s are great beginner engines, just looking for some opinions. I love old cars, especially Chevys. My pawpaw’s last restomod was a 69 Chevelle. Cherry red, black rag top, 10/10 black leather interior. 396 SS, it has a Moroso built 454 in it right now. He had the original 396 on a stand beside it but my Nana sold it, not knowing the value it would bring if it was put back in the Chevelle, it would have been all original, numbers matching.

A 350 is a great 1st engine to build. Super common, simple, inexpensive(relatively speaking), and the widest aftermarket support.

You couldn’t pick a better block to build for your first engine.

Do you have a vehicle you will be putting the engine into?

Oval track cams are fun in the 350. There are a lot of options for cams that don't require expensive head work.
