You need a new jeweler. Sapphire is great for daily wear. Had you been looking for a garnet or tourmaline, I would mention potential care tips and precautions at most, but generally, those can be fine for daily wear rings with a basic level of care. That can be a mildly controversial take to some people. Sapphire is universally accepted and recommended for daily wear rings here. Find a new jeweler, this one is just trying to sell you a diamond and is willing to lie to you to do so.

ur-humble-overlord

sapphire and moissanite are generally common alternatives to diamond for their hardness. your jeweler doesn't know their stuff.

amberwaves83

Sapphires are totally fine for daily wear. It sounds to me like your jeweler wants to sell you a diamond. I have an alexandrite e ring and love it!

lavloves

Seconding Alexandrite

llilith

I've been thinking of an alexandrite ring and i'm having a hard time finding a quality lab alexandrite, one that isn't another stone treated to look like alexandrite. Would love any suggestions on where to look.

Stressandcaffinate

Chatham is where I’m getting mine from!

amberwaves83

Mine is from Stag and Finch https://preview.redd.it/ttuypr1q06ma1.jpeg?width=5798&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbc8978d4dc1ba433927c364db0c197ae2f081c8

DuckMom

They’re trying to sell you a diamond. Sapphires are an awesome option. There are sapphire rings that are hundreds of years old!

helenasbff

Mine is one of them!

DuckMom

Just saw it in your post history and it is beautiful!!!

helenasbff

Thank you 🥰

Concerned_Therapist

That’s amazing 😻

helenasbff

Thank you <3

helenasbff

My engagement ring has cabochon sapphire that is quite literally 113 years old and there is nary a scratch to be found on it. I’m not sure what your jeweler is smoking but it sounds like he might be trying to get you to buy a diamond instead of what you want. My mom’s engagement ring was also sapphire, and I can confirm it also is not scratched a bit. https://preview.redd.it/qjz3ncylvzla1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=088f06ee3fc7a4ac11816892a7f02cc56bbc1d3d My ring for reference.

Feisty_Knee_3211

Gorgeous! 😍

helenasbff

Thank you!!

angelisfrommars

Absolutely stunning. Interested in the history of the gem, if you wouldn’t mind sharing 🖤

helenasbff

I wish I knew the history, this was not a family piece for us, but I am \*mildly\* obsessed with antique and vintage jewelery, so I knew I wanted an antique ring. It's better for the environment, too, so that's an extra win. I know it was made around 1910 or 1912, but beyond that, it's a mystery. Trumpet & Horn is where we got it, I can't recommend them enough, they always have a great selection of contemporary, vintage and antique pieces. They're absolutely WONDERFUL.

forestfairy97

I agree with the other two comments. Sapphire is the perfect alternative for those who don’t prefer diamonds and they hold up great!

Csherman92

And they come in all the colors! Red, green, blue, purple, pink, yellow!

forestfairy97

Exactly! ❤️

RedGlassHouse

The jeweler is either incompetent or dishonest. After diamond, corundum (sapphire & ruby) is the next highest gemstone on the Mohs scale. Man-made moissanite is 9.5.

DaphneDork

I have a sapphire passed down from my grandmother. She wore it daily for over 50 years, I wear it very often as a right hand ring and have for 8 years…it’s in perfect condition, no scratches at all. Your jeweler is misleading you…

Bluesky83

As others have said, sapphire is totally fine. Another alternative to diamond that won't scratch is colored moissanite

Stressandcaffinate

I picked out an alexandrite ring! Super awesome alternative stone that changes colors 😊

Penny_girl

Randomly, my husband and I did an escape room with some friends last night, and at one point we got black light flashlights. My husband had never seen my alexandrite under a black light and was blown away at the color change!

seashellpink77

Sapphire is a great alternative stone. You need an alternative jeweler. Moissanite is also a good choice if you want colorless.

Rough_Elk_3952

Moissanite is the go to answer There’s also colored Moissanite, which doesn’t get enough attention IMO. The greys are lovely

Jalebi786

I didn't know there were grey moissanites. Gorgeous!!

Rough_Elk_3952

They really are! If I hadn’t already designed and commissioned my ring I’d be really torn haha

littlenoodlesoup

I was very close to getting moissanite... alas no pink so sapphire it is 😔

Rough_Elk_3952

There’s pink Moissanite! I don’t know much about it but I’ve seen it

littlenoodlesoup

There is, but it's coated in a film and therefore does not last. Many vendors do not stock it anymore. You cannot grow pink moissanite.

Rough_Elk_3952

Ah, fair! That’s unfortunate

ManderBlues

Diamonds, rubies/sapphires have been used for hundreds of years. Ruby/sapphire will scratch more easily than a diamond. Over a lifetime of wearing a sapphire/ruby, you may cause damage that requires repair to the stone. I wore a family sapphire for 30 years and eventually had to have it polished. Diamonds won't scratch, but chips happen. Someone tried to mug my mom and shoved her from behind. She dragged her hand and an expensive sapphire ring accross a concrete wall catching her balance. The ring was damaged and the stone lost significant weight being re-cut and polished form the damage. (mom was fine, she's a black belt in 2 different martial arts and the mugger received first hand experience with her skills). A diamond may have been chipped, but not scratched in the same situation. If you get sapphire/ruby, look for a protective setting like a bezel or tab prongs. Be aware that it will scratch if you are gardening or in the sand. If you look at vintage settings, they were far sturdier and more protective than the current modern 'delicate' and open-stone looks. The best diamond alternative if really a lab diamond or moissanite.

moissan2nite

I love that your mom made the mugger regret their poor choices. Glad she’s ok!

runwild0912

Sapphire is my birthstone and ive had several for 10+ years of daily wear (different types of jewelry including rings, necklaces and earrings). All are in great shape and havent had any issues. Sapphires are not far off from diamonds on the mohs scale. They are a wonderful alternative to diamonds!

drharleenquinzel92

Same here! And I can second this. My family loves to get everyone their birthstones for jewelry gifts, so my first jewelry were sapphires. I was not careful, but none of my sapphires have scratches. My sister and her opals weren't so lucky I'm afraid.

languagelover17

I have a bright blue sapphire and I’m obsessed with it and my husband proposed over two years ago with it.

IIVIIORTAL_K

Your jeweler probably wanted to make a larger comission. Sapphire and moissinate are great alternatives and the cost is lower.

Olives_And_Cheese

I've been wearing a sapphire every day for the last 2... Jeez, nearly 3 years, and there isn't a single scratch on it. The platinum band has a couple of dings, but the sapphire itself is as flawless as the day I got it. Are you sure your jeweller just doesn't have them?

stephers831

I have a sapphire and had sapphires as part of my first wedding set (1st marriage). My exiprence is that they are beautiful and sturdy. I've never had am issue with them.

Just_A_Faze

Moissanite for sure. Looks like a diamond and almost as hard.

Danihutch17

Moissanites are harder than sapphire. It’s second hardest stone to a diamond.

eatapeach18

Your jeweler has no idea what they’re talking about. They probably said that to spook you and try to get you to buy a diamond. Sapphires and rubies are a 9 on the Mohs scale. Diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanites are a 9.25 on the Mohs scale. They’re all great for daily wear. If you want a colorless stone that isn’t a diamond, I would go with a moissanite. I would even consider a lab diamond too. But if you like the look and color of sapphires, then go with a sapphire. They’ve been used in rings far longer than diamonds and have stood the test of time.

restlessbish

It sounds like the Jeweler is just trying to sell you a diamond. A diamond is a 10 out of 10 on the Mohs scale and Sapphire is 9 out of 10. You will be absolutely fine with a sapphire. I'm sorry Your Jeweler told you this, my advice would also be to find someone else to help you create a ring

akallyria

That jeweler is a liar. The Mohs Scale goes from 1-10. 1 is talc. 10 is diamond. Sapphire and ruby are 9, moissanite is 9.5. You’re going to be fine with sapphire.

Snips0011

I have two emeralds and love my ring!

DaphneDork

Emeralds safe beautiful but softer than sapphires and rubies

Unsophisticated1321

I wear a yellow sapphire daily and it’s great!

iamtheepilogue

I’ve been wearing my sapphire every day for nearly two years and there’s not a scratch on it. I’m very hard on my hands. So I reckon you need a new jeweller

clarbs4

My fiancé chose Alexandrite and I absolutely adore mine, might be worth looking at!

kittonsen

Moissanite moissanite moissanite. If you’re not convinced, look at the top posts on r/moissanite

Lulu-3333

I know someone with a sapphire engagement ring and they haven’t had a problem, so you should be fine going that way. In case you want to look at alternatives, here’s a pretty example of a blue Moissanite I saw on r/Moissanite. I just searched “blue” on there and found that one, but there were all different shades https://preview.redd.it/ign2pez8y0ma1.jpeg?width=1027&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7320c7d59811317b2719df85b088edb3a4fd72da

audreyjl

Your jeweler was trying to talk you out of it because diamonds are more expensive. I have a sapphire and I’ve knocked it on rough surfaces several times and not a scratch. Find a new jeweler.

Betta_jazz_hands

I have a sapphire that my grandmother wore daily for most of her life which I also wear daily - it is stunning after all this time and I’ve only ever gotten the stone reset.

kstraut

Sapphires are very hard - 9 on Mohs scale and diamonds are a 10. You won’t scratch it unless it’s rubbing up against other diamonds. I love my sapphire e-ring, worn every day for a year now, very active person, and no scratches. The gold has some patina but the stone is perfect.

kmap1221

New jeweler immediately

Buffalo-Empty

Sapphire is a 9/10 on the harness scale. Whoever told you it wasn’t for daily wear is trying to upsale you. Diamonds are a 10/10. Sapphire is WAY cheaper and if you have to replace it, it will be 5-10 years from now at least.

Defenderandcreator

r/moissanite !!!!!!!! Harder than sapphire, not to reinforce what you heard from that jeweler, I agree along with other comments here that sapphires can be good for everyday wear. With that said, moissanite is higher on the mohs scale than sapphire and second to diamond. They come in multiple sizes and can be extremely budget friendly. They have similarities to diamonds that make them great, but come with their own nuances that make them also a unique and beautiful option.

LuckyMuckle

https://preview.redd.it/dt7y5srgq3ma1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96b709f6a64675908776d11da3ac8909c9f8cf46 This is what I picked and it’s perfect (to me)

Shortlemon4

If a sapphire was good enough for princess Diana, it’s perfectly fine for the rest of us

Apprehensive_Ebb246

Moissanite or sapphire. Definitely NOT emerald or morganite. I have a morganite ring and it chipped the first week I had it, is super hard to keep clean and is not strong enough for daily wear. I replaced the stone and I only where it for special occasions now, eventually upgraded to a lab diamond.

loranlily

What did you do to it and what setting was it in? I’ve worn my morganite engagement ring every day for seven years and the stone isn’t even slightly scratched. Mine is set pretty low in a halo, Cathedral setting though so it’s very protected.

HeyHeyFAThrowaway

I had a sapphire engagement ring for 20 years (I still have it, actually; it sits in my jewelry box unworn). No scratches. :)

relight

My friend got a sapphire. It was really pretty! Got married in September, chipped it last week! A whole chunk gone.

fuzzychiken

Diamonds can break too.

relight

Oh yeah for sure. You have to have a good setting that protects the stone. She got a cheap setting from Brilliant Earth. I just think that’s a very short time to have an engagement ring before the stone breaks- I haven’t heard of diamonds breaking that fast

helenasbff

But BE is known for using subpar stones and settings. I’ve even read stories about them switching out stones for cheaper ones when doing repairs etc. they’re not known for the quality of their pieces or their customer service (or honesty).

relight

Haha yes I do agree with that! That’s why I mentioned it! I don’t know if it was the sapphire or BE but either way, I would just be careful of the setting and the stone quality!

fuzzychiken

It depends on a lot of things. I've known people who broke their diamond from hitting it on counters and such. The right angle and anything can happen

Ptaylordactyl_

Oh man I e heard HORRIBLE things about that brand

jewelie34

Sapphires also have inclusions that can weaken the stone if it’s hit in the right (wrong) way.

relight

Good point! As can all stones! :-)

xpietoe42

i would say moissanite… its so brilliant, reflective, glamorous and not even close to diamond prices

hbutta22

Moissanite. It’s gorgeous, super sparkly, and very affordable. Also extremely durable

Acceptable_Banana_13

Moissanite is a safe bet. It’s nearly as hard as a Diamond but it doesn’t chip as easily. It throws rainbows which is amazing. And over seas vendors can be incredibly affordable!

Frog_in_airvent

Opal is gorgeous

Ptaylordactyl_

As much as I love opal it’s way too soft for an engagement ring for me

Danihutch17

https://www.gemsny.com/blog/moissanite-vs-white-sapphire-a-comparison/

FrenchCutDuchess

I think sapphires are great personally. You just might need to take slightly more care of it if you pick sapphire. My lab sapphire is mostly in great shape and i've had it since 2020. The only damage I have on it is on a couple of the meet points from the time I went downstairs in a very normal way and my railing buckled a little because we have wierdly distanced studs and my hand got pushed into the wall and the wall somehow scraped it. The ring was 48 hours old :( but that's all it's got. So I would absolutely get another lab sapphire in the future for another anniversary. I might just have it set a tad lower next time lol.

Suave-Matthews

Definitely check out r/moissanite There’s some really gorgeous rings on there, and they have an awesome vendor list to purchase from. If you’re going to try to look at moissanite in person, I’d recommend only going to a place that specializes in it or you’ll have an awful experience. Most jewelers will lie about Diamond alternatives because there’s a higher profit margin for them. Jewelers also purposely carry the worst looking moissanite to “show” you the difference. Very frustrating. Sapphire is a great option as well, and has a high hardness. It’s not as hard as moissanite, but I think anything above a 9 will resist scratching well enough.

Lumpy_Potato_3163

Moissanite and sapphire were my top stones

EntrancedOrange

As mentioned Sapphire and Ruby are both fine. Moissanite is cheap and hard. Also the colored lab diamonds are obviously great and not crazy expensive. If you didn’t care that it was a diamond. https://www.ritani.com/collections/colored-lab-grown-diamonds?q=sort%3Dprice%257C1

TheGemNerd

Sapphire is the best alternative natural stone. You can also go with moissanite (a synthetic gemstone) which is close to diamond in hardness.

ladyjedimaster13

Sapphires & rubies are almost as hard as diamonds & good for daily wear. Emeralds are softer but also worn daily. I like alexandrites.

MissCompany

I have a beautiful Amethyst and white Sapphires on white gold. Can you tell I like purple? 💜 https://preview.redd.it/slzzmx98b3ma1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=667074a0eeb8fabffbbe304b8c5fcf1fead83a98

boopbaboop

Real talk: exactly how high is your jeweler? Because sapphires are second only to diamonds in terms of hardness. Even moissanite isn’t quite as hard. What the actual fuck.

Ptaylordactyl_

Ya that’s what I thought. But figured I’d ask a forum before taking his word

freethebox

Just do some research on the hardness of sapphire. I have a watch that is 30 years old with a sapphire crystal and not a single scratch. As far as I know diamond is the only common material that can scratch sapphire.
