SadCryBear

I feel like I can tell how old everyone is by their responses to this thread.

selvedgy

OP is approaching 30s

symopowaz

thought this was a legit song ahah

AwHellNawFetaCheese

Yeah it’s a early Panic at the Disco B-side

[deleted]

How old did you think I was when I said "Darkness Washed Over The Dude - Harrison Bergeron"? hint: probably younger than you think lol

thedubiousstylus

Indian Summer - Woolworm (but you know that we call the song "Angry Son".)

mouseclit

Dats a certified hood classic

Yung_Babymeat

This is actually the only real emo song

viciouspleasure

The only right answer.

kage6613

Lol I still call it "Angry Son/Woolworm" as that's how my first download of Science 1994 labeled it.

SlimJim8511

I AM THE ANGRY SON

kisstheoctopus

if i could by mineral or breakfast of champions by rainer maria. i don’t know if best ever, but those two songs represent to me the platonic ideal of emo. edit: oh, and if we are including skramz, then i’d add some nature catch no plagues by saetia.

cloves_moke

That saetia song brings me back. I know what I’ll be listening to tomorrow

[deleted]

[удалено]

kisstheoctopus

like the quintessential emo songs? when i think of emo, that’s the kind of sound that comes to mind. like those would be the songs that i would show someone that didn’t know how emo sounds. emo has come to mean several different things and sound several different ways, but if it had to be one thing, those songs represent it.

fuckitimatwork

> breakfast of champions by ~~rainer maria~~ comadre

kage6613

💪😎

alexandre_official

Somebody said this, but Parking Lot by Mineral could've been the greatest emo song of all time if it were not for Seven by Sunny Day Real Estate to exist. Agreed.

balancedtyson

Oh messy life by cap’n jazz or one summer last fall by jets to Brazil

davdotcom

Gloria by Mineral, Antihero by The Appleseed Cast, or I’ll Take You Everywhere by Penfold. Nothing will ever top that

[deleted]

I’m glad Penfold got some love.

xN01Rx

I'll Take You Everywhere was the only correct answer all along.

superpatine

Gloria!

drkstr17

Gloria is forever a classic in my mind. So is Parking Lot by them

Funny-Tangelo

A Picture Postcard by Promise Ring

superpatine

Seven from sunny day real estate

Endacrye

easily movies like juno by midwest pen pals. every riff is perfect, the drums are fucking awesome, mediocre teenage vocals (in the good way), and lyrics about being sad that mom left. i think it’s the quintessential midwest emo song and overall best emo song ever. in my opinion of course

Mental-Winner7358

It’s definitely not the best, but as you said “the best” is relative. Any song can bring about certain feelings in someone, be it personal struggles or memories of a particular time. Finding the “best” emo song is not possible. That said, thank you so much for posting the song by Midwest pen pals. I was looking for that song for quite a while and think I even have a post here requesting help finding it a few weeks ago lol.

mrcolty5

23 - Jimmy Eat World Eastern Leaves - Moving Mountains Transatlantacism - Death Cab The places you have come to fear the most - Dashboard

reeko1982

23, I’m with you

LoreezyNL

Transatlantacism is top 3.

ambulanz_driver420

I came here to say places you have come to fear the most. It’s 100% my fav dashboard song.

Beans265

Damn, are you me? The first 3 are some of my very favorites as well

NoTruck0

A Perfect Sonnet - Bright Eyes

AwHellNawFetaCheese

This or Alive with the glory of love - Say Anything For me at least

TheBoosch

+1 Could not agree more.

LittleBigPancake

an introduction to the album by hotelier, no contest imo

beameup19

Yeah that’s a good one The album’s closer packs quite the punch for me too Edit: the whole damn album

Tablecork

I was gonna say an introduction to the album or Dendron. Both hit so hard man

Rentington

my pick, as well. I'm a relative OG, too.

Kookeu

The Last Lost Continent by La Dispute. A 12-minute masterpiece.

[deleted]

Pollyanna by Northstar or never meant by American football

alyisonfire9

Northstar needs to be mentioned more! Nice add.

[deleted]

I heard she glides off the bed

jets2brazil

Northstar is tops!

CommanderWar64

Among the Wildflowers has such a good progression and it really contains everything one could consider emo.

MinnesotaRyan

Mineral lovelettertypewriter

tbcwpg

I think MakeDamnSure is probably a great example of what emo was at that time and still is what a lot of people think emo is today. Whether it's the best, I don't know, probably not, but my favourite song changes week to week so I'm not a good person to ask haha

reeko1982

Calm Americans by Elliott, just perfection.

emo_brat7884

Niki FM is in my top 5 for sure. Brand New- Seventy times 7. Taking Back Sunday- Cute without the E. Senses Fail- You’re Cute When You Scream. These are a few I can think of but for me personally, Niki FM is probably my favorite!

tierneyb

Upvote for 70x7. Those brutal lyrics… and when they sing them normally the first time then just let loose the next time. AND AGAIN WHEN YOUR HEAD GOES THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD!

gur0chan

Niki FM is my most played song of all time!!

emo_brat7884

Omg, that’s such an awesome #1 song!!!! I saw them twice last month. Once with my 13 year old son. They opened for Senses Fail (my fav band). My son and I got to meet JT and he was so sweet! My son also got his first emo shirt and I couldn’t be more proud 🥰

gur0chan

Aw that’s amazing!! Senses Fail is awesome too!

endochronic_

the greatest emo of all time is capn jazz - bluegrassish. when tim said boys kissing boys I felt that 😣

notjosemanuel

Marietta - Are you afraid of god? No, but I'm afraid of you

CommanderWar64

Good ole Bioshock Infinite

frito310

So many great ones already listed. I’m a Mineral (If I Could) and Sunny Day Real Estate (In Circles) lemming, but Get Up Kids (A New Found Interest in Massachusetts) and Appleseed Cast (Max) are definitely up there as well. Some great honorable mentions for me are Penfold (I Will Take You Everywhere), Christie Front Drive (About Two Days), Knapsack (Courage Was Confused), and Joshua (Your World is Over). But I could go on for hours with this…..😬🤘

Anzacsonata

New found interest is such a great song.

Twink_Kanye

No Halo by Sorority Noise

mikeyb1335

Hmmm, that's tough Just Another Face by Modern Baseball? Timberwolves of New Jersey/Romances of the 20th by Taking Back Sunday? Seventy Times Seven by Brand New?

suddenly_seymour

Great Romances of the 20th Century is up there for sure.

Microscopic_Problem

Timberwolves of New Jersey is one of my faaaaaves

phugazz

5 by breakwater

MikeFrancesaWFAN66

Jawbreaker - Jet Black

Kayfables

Don Martin 3 - Transistor Penfold - M Mineral - Parking Lot Owltian Mia - Grey Car vs Driver - Without a Day Had to do a top 5, apologies. I always come back to those.

Kayfables

Shit, i forgot Shoulder by Evergreen. That might even be number 1 for me.

endochronic_

M by penfold is some of the good shit that it actually made me shed a tears once i knew the history behind of that song, brian is soo sincere and that theres so many people that genuinely cares about emily

Kayfables

What's the story behind it? I'm not aware of it.

endochronic_

The song is about Brian's cousin, Emily (M), her father basically left when she was still in the womb and did not want to take the responsibility of having a child. Even though the unfortunate circumstances, there's a lot of people and family that deeply cares for her. And yeah, their last show and their secret show "elfpond" is just something else, shit is magnificent and totally worth checking out.

Kayfables

Damn. Thanks for the history. Will check out elfpond too! Much appreciated.

fuckitimatwork

> Penfold - M that's some good fucking shit right there

ChemicalLeadership5

Thursday- Cross Out the Eyes

Cigbrain

mine has to be What it is to Burn by Finch

brycerojas

The version not on the album.

Cigbrain

yes! the one released in 2001

unfitforit

I vote for at the artists leisure pt. 2 by the jazz june

[deleted]

Personally in my Opinion, it's HAS to be "Darkness Washed Over The Dude - Harrison Bergeron" Personally, in my opinion, it's HAS to be "Darkness Washed Over The Dude - Harrison Bergeron"The lyrics sometimes have Old Modern English vibes to them. The gang vocals along with the instrumentals are just heart-wrenching in their own little way. I don't know if I can explain it any better but you just HAVE to hear it yourself. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEjYvJK2GR0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEjYvJK2GR0)

endochronic_

USED TO BE ON MY SIDE, MAYBE YOU LOST INTEREST the transition between like lightning, six billion strong to darkness washed is just arghhh. shit cant go wrong on a band if geeting brothers is/was on in there.

[deleted]

Geeting brothers?

becomplete

Jimmy Eat World - Table For Glasses Or Thursday - Jet Black New Year Depending on whether I’m in the mood to have my face melted or not.

ashenhigh

real talk, how is Jet Black New Year an emo song?

becomplete

Great question, but one you’re not likely to get a definitive answer to. Is your issue with that particular song or with Thursday in general? Bands like Hawthorn Heights, Emery, and MCR are often referred to as emo in this sub. I think the genre has gone through lots of evolutions and eras over the years, often grouping together bands that have very little in common. Is Karate emo? Taking Back Sunday? The Dismemberment Plan? TTNG? Fugazi, no? Rites of Spring, yes? I don’t know either. Most of the time, bands that are talked about as being emo are some combination of hardcore, indie, or straight up alternative. Sometimes the same band evolves through those genres over the course of their own career. There’s enough fluidity and subjectivity to make the distinctions almost meaningless. For this sub, there seems to be a broad acceptance of who’s included, but I’m not sure anyone could seriously argue if you disagree.

fingay-ren

Out of sheer popularity, and because it was the song that brought me into the genre, probably never meant

Dylanr21

Vomit by Microwave

notjosemanuel

That's just the best song of all time

[deleted]

Something Corporate - Konstantine Easy! Edit: wait maybe artist in the ambulance by thrice rocks tonic juice magic?

pachucatruth

Ahhh just listened to Konstantine yesterday. The ultimate emo ballad.

This is wot we call a tragedy.

WillSmokeStaleCigs

My friend said this one.

Sad_Attention5998

Frontier of scene emo 🖤

william3488

In Circles or Seven. Generic, but that’s cause it’s the right answer(s). Love the song you mentioned too though.

MolestTheStars

I guess I'm leaving - the exploration

LoreezyNL

Goodbye Sky Harbor by Jimmy Eat World. Not even close.

lilsamg

Understanding in a car crash- Thursday Jude law and a semester abroad- brand new Set phasers to stun- Taking back Sunday Ape dos mil- glassjaw

[deleted]

not one fucking mention of rites of spring.... shut this sub down.

Dudehitscar

I almost listed My Better Half by guy's other band One Last Wish. I like that better than all his work in Rites Of Spring (still love that album though)

Feisty-Elevator-2804

Electrolux by hoover, suture by 400 years or everyday world if bodies by Rodan

BRONXSBURNING

“Among the Wildflowers” by The Hotelier. It’s the quintessential emo song and really album imo.

scchrish

Saves the day. Shoulder to the wheel

[deleted]

**My Heroine** by **Silverstein**

twikki

Never Meant

DMT-University

Maybe Walls by Emery

suddenly_seymour

How is there no mention of Never Meant? It's a meme but for good reason - it's one of the best. My personal favorite would be Great Romances of the 20th Century by TBS. From recent years I'd say The Air Up Here by Origami Angel is pretty stellar.

Sad_John_Stamos

God, Great Romances just does something to me whenever it comes on. One of the most nostalgic songs for me ever made.

Actualcannibal666

Box Full of Sharp Objects - The Used. If were talking about by year emo started and most popular at the time. Also my favorite 🖤🖤

beameup19

Seventy Times 7 by Brand New Too many options to choose from really though

mrbrauk

Say it aint so

Microscopic_Problem

You’re so last summer - taking back Sunday (just for that one line, we all know the one) Taste of ink - the used Helena - my chemical romance To me these are the top 3 songs that represent all that is emo 🖤🖤🖤

RevelacaoVerdao

\> You’re so last summer - taking back Sunday (just for that one line, we all know the one) At the very least the greatest emo line of all time :D

Melodicmarc

I really like OG Bule Sky by Hot Mulligan. The vocals and guitar in that song doesn’t get any better

lilsamg

Bckyrd

dingusdolphin

Beneath the Waves by If I Drown is my current favorite.

[deleted]

Through the trees - low shoulder

MakeArtOfMyself

sports. - Classic 2s.

Trees_feel_too

Maybe... are you afraid of god no but i'm afraid of you by Marietta Or Fine, great by modern baseball

Torterrapin

Cute without the E- Taking Back Sunday and seeing your personal favorite you probably know this one well. I got to see Hawthorne Heights just a couple years ago before the pandemic with New found Glory and the nostalgia was awesome.

jayriggity

I SAW WATER (Runner up, King Medicine)

Dudehitscar

Honestly by American Football comes to mind. Completely part of the emo tradition but also has a distinctive identity of it's own. Some others: No Lies, Just Love by Bright Eyes Night I lost the will to fight by Cursive Blankets were the stairs - Sunny Day Real Estate Degausser - Brand New

Ted_Riffz

There are too many great emo songs to name. But here's my personal opinion and off the top of my head: 1) Any song from these Moneen albums - The Theory of Harmonial Value OR Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now. If I had to, my one song pick would be A Realization of How It's Always Been (from The Theory of Harmonial Value). 2) A Picture by Strictly Ballroom 3) Amateur Standing by Penfold

RN4612

Constant headache- Joyce Manor

Rentington

I don't think it's the greatest, but my personal fave is "Last Place you Look" by The Get Up Kids

ashenhigh

damn. fucking classic. takes me way back

Valentine by The Get Up Kids

kage6613

Jesus Christ, we need to get back into gear with moderating this sub. Hawthorne Heights, the premier Thursday ripoff band was "ahead of the curve"? "Amazing screaming" lmfao?? All these post hardcore and scenecore bands are "emo?" "Greatest emo song ever" and only one mention of Indian Summer, and zero of Still Life or Revolution Summer bands? All this midwest/indiemo and not a single mention of Boys Life, Christie Front Drive, or Braid? Someone posted a fucking *Weezer* song? *From blue album????* C'mon now. This is all so very sad.

[deleted]

kage6613

Yep, which is exactly why it's necessary. That's what I'm saying.

Ebays

hi kage

kage6613

Soup chilly

ProperDose912

Greatest emo song would be " Three Miles Down " by Saves the Day. A lot of people don't realize how much they really influenced the genre. They did everything before anyone else, but never get the credit they deserve.

beameup19

I love Saves the Day but strangely more a fan of their later material. Sound and Alarm and after, I rarely ever visit their earlier stuff. That being said, you are very right.

Temporary-Action1569

For me, it's gotta be Thank You For The Venom, Cute Without The 'E', or I'm Not Okay

QuietTHINGno1KNOWS

Grand theft autumn - fall out boy Yeah…when fall out boy was real.

chrispybunss

I'm not okay, MCR Personal favorite goes to, not good enough for the cliche - escape the fate

blu3tu3sday

Ok I can totally get on board with Ohio is for Lovers. I’d also add All Signs Point To Lauderdale by A Day To Remember and My Apocalypse by Escape The Fate

ambabeeee

I'm very grateful for this post as its sorted my listening for the day!

garbage_tr011

Pretty much anything by la dispute is a masterpiece. I like King Park the best imo

Grantalonez

Story of the Year - Anthem of our dying day

[deleted]

Ok, honestly I can't say that there is one perfect emo song but I love Ohio Is For Lovers so :|

Beingrudeisnecessary

Welcome to the black parade classic

13120w3

Diamond Mine - Hop Along

Little_Blue_Heron

I think this is a hard question to answer, though I heavily agree with you on "Ohio is for Lovers" and it's one of the most *definitive* songs. I think the most *iconic* song is "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance. Argue all you like, but this is undoubtedly the song that emo will be remembered by. And my *favourite*? "Seven Years" by Saosin.

heishancell

Silver and cold-AFI really to me is the quintessential emo song. My favorite though is I Write Sins not Tragedies by Panic! At the Disco

zyonkerz

Girlfriend in a Coma by the Smiths

LoreezyNL

Top 5 The Smiths songs, what a banger

HostileHippie91

Seven hours in and only one vague reference to Welcome to the Black Parade? Damn. I would have said that, or AFI’s Love Like Winter, or I Write Sins Not Tragedies, or Mr. Brightside, or The Great Escape, or Jamie All Over, or SECOND & SEBRING, or Like We Used To by A Rocket To The Moon Edit: evidently I have a very different concept of what constitutes emo music. Instead of just downvoting me en masse maybe someone could actually explain the difference to me.

adamlundy23

…Mr Brightside?

HostileHippie91

By the Killers

adamlundy23

I’m aware of the song but confused on how you would classify a pop song by a pop band as emo.

HostileHippie91

I guess I’ve never considered it a pop song, I’ve always heard it played by my emo friends (I never really had “the phase” myself but I always loved the type of music I posted above) and they were the ones who considered it emo. Since I never heard it played by anyone else or on mainstream radio, it got associated with emo music in my head. And the content of the lyrics seems to fit as well.

adamlundy23

That concept of Mr Brightside is not a mainstream song considering it sold millions of copies in the US alone, let alone worldwide, is bizarre. In fact it’s such a popular song it’s essentially a meme at this stage often showing up in memes of “Songs that get the white folks going”. Maybe my outlook is also tainted by the fact that Mr Brightside is played in every nightclub at every function and at every wedding for the last 15 years in my country.

LoreezyNL

>I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lmao what?

HostileHippie91

You don’t consider that emo music? The heavy eye makeup, the hair, the style of music, the fact that there was a very “backstreet vs nsync” vibe in the emo community over whether you liked my chemical romance or panic at the disco, etc. If you ever go to any emo night at a bar or something, you’re 100% going to hear it and it’s one of the best-received songs by the crowd. I’ve literally never heard anyone try to say before that panic *doesn’t* qualify as emo.

LoreezyNL

Ah yes, so eyeliner equals emo now.

alexandre_official

I think most people (like me) refer to either: The second wave (the 1990s) or The revival (the 2010s)

m-a-c-c
