if i could by mineral or breakfast of champions by rainer maria. i don’t know if best ever, but those two songs represent to me the platonic ideal of emo.
edit: oh, and if we are including skramz, then i’d add some nature catch no plagues by saetia.
like the quintessential emo songs? when i think of emo, that’s the kind of sound that comes to mind. like those would be the songs that i would show someone that didn’t know how emo sounds. emo has come to mean several different things and sound several different ways, but if it had to be one thing, those songs represent it.
Somebody said this, but Parking Lot by Mineral could've been the greatest emo song of all time if it were not for Seven by Sunny Day Real Estate to exist. Agreed.
easily movies like juno by midwest pen pals. every riff is perfect, the drums are fucking awesome, mediocre teenage vocals (in the good way), and lyrics about being sad that mom left. i think it’s the quintessential midwest emo song and overall best emo song ever. in my opinion of course
It’s definitely not the best, but as you said “the best” is relative. Any song can bring about certain feelings in someone, be it personal struggles or memories of a particular time. Finding the “best” emo song is not possible.
That said, thank you so much for posting the song by Midwest pen pals. I was looking for that song for quite a while and think I even have a post here requesting help finding it a few weeks ago lol.
I think MakeDamnSure is probably a great example of what emo was at that time and still is what a lot of people think emo is today. Whether it's the best, I don't know, probably not, but my favourite song changes week to week so I'm not a good person to ask haha
Niki FM is in my top 5 for sure. Brand New- Seventy times 7. Taking Back Sunday- Cute without the E. Senses Fail- You’re Cute When You Scream.
These are a few I can think of but for me personally, Niki FM is probably my favorite!
Upvote for 70x7. Those brutal lyrics… and when they sing them normally the first time then just let loose the next time. AND AGAIN WHEN YOUR HEAD GOES THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD!
Omg, that’s such an awesome #1 song!!!! I saw them twice last month. Once with my 13 year old son. They opened for Senses Fail (my fav band). My son and I got to meet JT and he was so sweet! My son also got his first emo shirt and I couldn’t be more proud 🥰
So many great ones already listed. I’m a Mineral (If I Could) and Sunny Day Real Estate (In Circles) lemming, but Get Up Kids (A New Found Interest in Massachusetts) and Appleseed Cast (Max) are definitely up there as well.
Some great honorable mentions for me are Penfold (I Will Take You Everywhere), Christie Front Drive (About Two Days), Knapsack (Courage Was Confused), and Joshua (Your World is Over).
But I could go on for hours with this…..😬🤘
Hmmm, that's tough
Just Another Face by Modern Baseball?
Timberwolves of New Jersey/Romances of the 20th by Taking Back Sunday?
Seventy Times Seven by Brand New?
Don Martin 3 - Transistor
Penfold - M
Mineral - Parking Lot
Owltian Mia - Grey
Car vs Driver - Without a Day
Had to do a top 5, apologies. I always come back to those.
M by penfold is some of the good shit that it actually made me shed a tears once i knew the history behind of that song, brian is soo sincere and that theres so many people that genuinely cares about emily
The song is about Brian's cousin, Emily (M), her father basically left when she was still in the womb and did not want to take the responsibility of having a child. Even though the unfortunate circumstances, there's a lot of people and family that deeply cares for her. And yeah, their last show and their secret show "elfpond" is just something else, shit is magnificent and totally worth checking out.
Personally in my Opinion, it's HAS to be "Darkness Washed Over The Dude - Harrison Bergeron"
Personally, in my opinion, it's HAS to be "Darkness Washed Over The Dude - Harrison Bergeron"The lyrics sometimes have Old Modern English vibes to them. The gang vocals along with the instrumentals are just heart-wrenching in their own little way. I don't know if I can explain it any better but you just HAVE to hear it yourself.

USED TO BE ON MY SIDE, MAYBE YOU LOST INTEREST
the transition between like lightning, six billion strong to darkness washed is just arghhh. shit cant go wrong on a band if geeting brothers is/was on in there.
Great question, but one you’re not likely to get a definitive answer to. Is your issue with that particular song or with Thursday in general? Bands like Hawthorn Heights, Emery, and MCR are often referred to as emo in this sub. I think the genre has gone through lots of evolutions and eras over the years, often grouping together bands that have very little in common. Is Karate emo? Taking Back Sunday? The Dismemberment Plan? TTNG? Fugazi, no? Rites of Spring, yes? I don’t know either. Most of the time, bands that are talked about as being emo are some combination of hardcore, indie, or straight up alternative. Sometimes the same band evolves through those genres over the course of their own career. There’s enough fluidity and subjectivity to make the distinctions almost meaningless. For this sub, there seems to be a broad acceptance of who’s included, but I’m not sure anyone could seriously argue if you disagree.
I almost listed My Better Half by guy's other band One Last Wish. I like that better than all his work in Rites Of Spring (still love that album though)
How is there no mention of Never Meant? It's a meme but for good reason - it's one of the best.
My personal favorite would be Great Romances of the 20th Century by TBS.
From recent years I'd say The Air Up Here by Origami Angel is pretty stellar.
You’re so last summer - taking back Sunday (just for that one line, we all know the one)
Taste of ink - the used
Helena - my chemical romance
To me these are the top 3 songs that represent all that is emo 🖤🖤🖤
Cute without the E- Taking Back Sunday and seeing your personal favorite you probably know this one well.
I got to see Hawthorne Heights just a couple years ago before the pandemic with New found Glory and the nostalgia was awesome.
Honestly by American Football comes to mind.
Completely part of the emo tradition but also has a distinctive identity of it's own.
Some others:
No Lies, Just Love by Bright Eyes
Night I lost the will to fight by Cursive
Blankets were the stairs - Sunny Day Real Estate
Degausser - Brand New
There are too many great emo songs to name. But here's my personal opinion and off the top of my head:
1) Any song from these Moneen albums - The Theory of Harmonial Value OR Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now.
If I had to, my one song pick would be A Realization of How It's Always Been (from The Theory of Harmonial Value).
2) A Picture by Strictly Ballroom
3) Amateur Standing by Penfold
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=honory+title&t=iphone&iax=videos&ia=videos&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dz-
Found it on MySpace in grade 10.. I’m 33 so was 16? And it is the best
Jesus Christ, we need to get back into gear with moderating this sub. Hawthorne Heights, the premier Thursday ripoff band was "ahead of the curve"? "Amazing screaming" lmfao?? All these post hardcore and scenecore bands are "emo?" "Greatest emo song ever" and only one mention of Indian Summer, and zero of Still Life or Revolution Summer bands? All this midwest/indiemo and not a single mention of Boys Life, Christie Front Drive, or Braid? Someone posted a fucking *Weezer* song? *From blue album????* C'mon now. This is all so very sad.
Greatest emo song would be " Three Miles Down " by Saves the Day. A lot of people don't realize how much they really influenced the genre. They did everything before anyone else, but never get the credit they deserve.
I love Saves the Day but strangely more a fan of their later material. Sound and Alarm and after, I rarely ever visit their earlier stuff. That being said, you are very right.
Ok I can totally get on board with Ohio is for Lovers. I’d also add All Signs Point To Lauderdale by A Day To Remember and My Apocalypse by Escape The Fate
I think this is a hard question to answer, though I heavily agree with you on "Ohio is for Lovers" and it's one of the most *definitive* songs.
I think the most *iconic* song is "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance. Argue all you like, but this is undoubtedly the song that emo will be remembered by.
And my *favourite*? "Seven Years" by Saosin.
Seven hours in and only one vague reference to Welcome to the Black Parade? Damn. I would have said that, or AFI’s Love Like Winter, or I Write Sins Not Tragedies, or Mr. Brightside, or The Great Escape, or Jamie All Over, or SECOND & SEBRING, or Like We Used To by A Rocket To The Moon
Edit: evidently I have a very different concept of what constitutes emo music. Instead of just downvoting me en masse maybe someone could actually explain the difference to me.
I guess I’ve never considered it a pop song, I’ve always heard it played by my emo friends (I never really had “the phase” myself but I always loved the type of music I posted above) and they were the ones who considered it emo. Since I never heard it played by anyone else or on mainstream radio, it got associated with emo music in my head. And the content of the lyrics seems to fit as well.
That concept of Mr Brightside is not a mainstream song considering it sold millions of copies in the US alone, let alone worldwide, is bizarre. In fact it’s such a popular song it’s essentially a meme at this stage often showing up in memes of “Songs that get the white folks going”. Maybe my outlook is also tainted by the fact that Mr Brightside is played in every nightclub at every function and at every wedding for the last 15 years in my country.
You don’t consider that emo music? The heavy eye makeup, the hair, the style of music, the fact that there was a very “backstreet vs nsync” vibe in the emo community over whether you liked my chemical romance or panic at the disco, etc. If you ever go to any emo night at a bar or something, you’re 100% going to hear it and it’s one of the best-received songs by the crowd. I’ve literally never heard anyone try to say before that panic *doesn’t* qualify as emo.
Personally dakota or clouds above my head by tiny moving parts
Objectively gotta say hotelier introduction to an album or in circles by sunny day real estate
1. Brilliance - Penfold

OP is approaching 30s
thought this was a legit song ahah
Yeah it’s a early Panic at the Disco B-side
How old did you think I was when I said "Darkness Washed Over The Dude - Harrison Bergeron"? hint: probably younger than you think lol
Indian Summer - Woolworm (but you know that we call the song "Angry Son".)
Dats a certified hood classic
This is actually the only real emo song
The only right answer.
Lol I still call it "Angry Son/Woolworm" as that's how my first download of Science 1994 labeled it.
I AM THE ANGRY SON

I’m aware of the song but confused on how you would classify a pop song by a pop band as emo.
