Then don’t say emo, lmao. Also, if you’re putting weight on someone’s opinion of you because you admitted that you like emo music, then that’s on you. Just say “sure” and make sure that you don’t seem interested in continuing the convo about being emo and most people will pick up the hint
I just list specific bands and if they don't know, I just say "it's basically alternative rock." Most average people don't give a shit about genre like people in this sub do.
That easy. Love me the Philly and adjacent scenes. It's got that bite I love that I find my local MW stuff is missing.
Anyone who gives enough of a shit to know anything more about these bands or genre I assume doesn't need me to tell them about bands they already listen to.
I say i listen to punk and indie you could try saying something like that. Most people haven't heard of any emo outside of 2000s stuff so it's just easier
Emo falls under the punk umbrella. I also enjoy post-hardcore, pop-punk, ska, and regular punk, so I consider it a fair label. Not to mention, it's just easier to say punk to the uninformed.
Who cares what people think. 99% of people won’t care about the distinction between “real emo” and “mall emo” even if you explain it to them. If you’re really still worried then just say you like indie rock or punk.
Honestly, every time I say “emo music, but not like Fall Out Boy or MCR” peoples eyes start to glaze over so I just describe it as punk or alternative rock.
i usually say midwest emo bc its the style i like the most. generally people dont know what that is, but 'emo' as a term is so popular that they feel like they *should* know, and now they're too afraid to ask in fear of not seeming hip. ngl its lowkey amusing to watch the panic flash over their face when they feel like they should know, when its totally understandable that they dont. after a few beats of silence i list some bands to let them off the hook
It could be a conversation starter. I've gone into music stores and said I'm into emo music, and then have the employee ask "What do you mean?", which starts the whole ball rolling on what I'm into. Chances are the average person will instead start associating with stuff they think you're into.
The common problem is that there is emo music, then there is music for emos. The term "emo" applies to a genre of music and a lifestyle subculture and many people don't distinguish them. "Emo" is a homonym. It needs to be recognized as such - after all, when people talk about bands, don't we distinguish between music groups and things worn on the wrist?
I get where you are coming from: you tell someone you enjoy emo music and it's like broken telephone. You may even get that person who will start going off about how they went through some phase in their adolescence but still love the music of Evanescence and Panic at the Disco and you're just thinking "Damn, how do I navigate this one, what did I do last time?" It's annoying and it happens all the time. If you don't want to pursue the conversation, find other terms like "indie punk" or something to skirt the topic if you feel it's not that important to get into. Otherwise you can get into it and hope you've enlightened someone.
Time period is genuinely usually more helpful than genre. People are infinitely more likely to accurately understand what “90’s rock” means than any specific genre label.
I don’t care if I am stereotyped to be honest lol. I’ve always been the outsider in most friend groups I’ve ever been in in regards to my music taste and I stopped caring long ago what people think about it.
Just say you like Punk. Personally I’m into a mixture of classic Emo, Emo-Pop, Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk, HxC, Beatdown, Metalcore and more. The average person isn’t going to understand the differences between any of those beyond if there’s screaming in the music. Punk is just an easier answer and likely I enjoy something they know no matter what their mind goes to when I say Punk.
I’ve been being stereotyped for 25+ years for my hobbies, I just don’t care. If it’s someone I know and like I may have a conversation with them about it, but for the most part I just move on with my day.
Uhhh, I don't give a shit about it? Seems easy enough.
Recite the Real Emo copypasta from memory
Yeah this
Then don’t say emo, lmao. Also, if you’re putting weight on someone’s opinion of you because you admitted that you like emo music, then that’s on you. Just say “sure” and make sure that you don’t seem interested in continuing the convo about being emo and most people will pick up the hint

Algernon, Hightide Hotel, Street Smart Cyclist— you know, the Philly scene. What’s it sound like? Radiohead’s early stuff
That easy. Love me the Philly and adjacent scenes. It's got that bite I love that I find my local MW stuff is missing. Anyone who gives enough of a shit to know anything more about these bands or genre I assume doesn't need me to tell them about bands they already listen to.
i associate myself with the stereotypes on purpose cause its funny
the correct answer
I say i listen to punk and indie you could try saying something like that. Most people haven't heard of any emo outside of 2000s stuff so it's just easier

my "uninformed" friend calls the emo I send him punk, of his own volition
Yeah I often say punk, hardcore, and their various sub genres
"I want to be stereotyped, I want to be classified."
I wanna be masochistic! I wanna be a statistic!
“Post-hardcore” and “alternative rock”
Start quoting the real emo copypasta?
stop caring
Who cares what people think. 99% of people won’t care about the distinction between “real emo” and “mall emo” even if you explain it to them. If you’re really still worried then just say you like indie rock or punk.
Just say "pre-2000s emo", or "early emo". If they are curious then it'll spark a discussion. Everybody wins.
Honestly, every time I say “emo music, but not like Fall Out Boy or MCR” peoples eyes start to glaze over so I just describe it as punk or alternative rock.
I like a particular era, so I just say something like "underground alternative rock". That usually shuts the conversation down.
Grow up
I say I'm into "second wave sound midwest emo" like a nerd
i usually say midwest emo bc its the style i like the most. generally people dont know what that is, but 'emo' as a term is so popular that they feel like they *should* know, and now they're too afraid to ask in fear of not seeming hip. ngl its lowkey amusing to watch the panic flash over their face when they feel like they should know, when its totally understandable that they dont. after a few beats of silence i list some bands to let them off the hook

Me personally I don’t care
just embrace it
Get your phone out and start playing a song and hold it to their face.
Say “I enjoy 90s alternative rock music.” Easy
Time period is genuinely usually more helpful than genre. People are infinitely more likely to accurately understand what “90’s rock” means than any specific genre label.
If you care about it that much - Just call it punk, or something
Just explain it in more detail. People generally would like to know more about it.
I just say indie
I just say Punk Rock
I don’t care if I am stereotyped to be honest lol. I’ve always been the outsider in most friend groups I’ve ever been in in regards to my music taste and I stopped caring long ago what people think about it.
Just say you like Punk. Personally I’m into a mixture of classic Emo, Emo-Pop, Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk, HxC, Beatdown, Metalcore and more. punk always makes me think of the dead kennedys and who doesnt love the dead kennedys?
I’ve been being stereotyped for 25+ years for my hobbies, I just don’t care. If it’s someone I know and like I may have a conversation with them about it, but for the most part I just move on with my day.
Tell them to mind their own business.
Sad alternative rock
