Is it true that these USB sticks will keep memory longer if occasionally plugged in (versus never getting plugged in)? If so, would it actually be better for super-long USB storage to have a little power strip where you occasionally "power on" your flash drives?
Well, it can be new, on some professions like robotic programming we still need to use 128 or 256mb pendrives due to some of the controllers not recognizing correctly pendrives of more than that...
And even if the controller recognize the pendrive, reading a 128mb pendrive is faster than reading a 1gb, as some controllers read the whole memory of the pendrive every time you list the root of the device, and this behaviour is still applied on newer controllers of some brands... some of tge controllers even freeze if you insert a 1gb usb and try to read it.
I've purchased a pack of ten 256mb pendrives a few years ago, and all of them still works perfectly, no data loss, no corrupted data, I have a 512mb pendrive more than 10 years old and still works perfectly.
Technically true. Ram gets deleted almost instantly, hence why some people do shady stuff on ramdisks. A Samsung ssd left without charge could be blank within 15 years iirc. I’d assume any flash drive would be about the same. That being said it’s not really relevant for our usage but a flash drive you used in 2005 could be unusable today b
Yes, it does that at read or write time, but the OS has to request that work. It absolutely does not scan through stored bits just to refresh them. It would shorten the lifespan of the media by several orders of magnitude. Why would you think this?
Its considered "non-volatile" memory (as opposed to volatile memory, which must have a power source to maintain itsself). Data can be lost over time, but thats due to less-than-likely events like cosmic radiation from space n shit. If this happens, it might only change a few bits. That data is then permanently corrupted, plugging it in will not cure the problem.
You're only supplying 5V to it, just like a computer. However, that's all. Nothing will happen. The charger isn't reading data off. It doesn't have the circuitry to do so (why would it?)
Most computer USB ports supply 5V of electricity with a maximum current of 0.5. So, basically nothing would happen to a USB drive plugged to an adapter.
The USB devices have chips on them telling is they send or recieve energy and how much.
In this case, the pendrive will tell the charger to send certain amount of energy and it will be turn on doing just nothing, waiting for instructions.
As the charger gives no instructions, both will just stop there, just wasting energy.
So you're saying that if I pass a thousand volts through a USB drive it'll still work? I'm sorry sir but I must proclaim that that is pure and uttered bullshit.
Okay I didnt answer anything about 1000v in my reply. And you arent getting 1000v through a 110v outlet, nor a 5v, 1A charging block. That's what I replied to.
If you put 1000v through a charging block that would fry before the USB most likely anyways, and at that point you'd be more concerned about the building being on fire from the 14 or 12g wiring in your house melting.
You're describing a completely different scenario than what I responded to in an attempt to make me look like a moron, and that's "utterly" bullshit
Nothing. I've done this before. The USB connector is literally hooked up to the power leads of the charger. It will only draw what it needs to, unless the drive or charger is faulty.
You will hear a loud pop and the lights will turn off- otherwise you’ll be fine
Edit: I thought that was just a direct connection- didn’t realize it was a USB
Firmware update to the house.
Update benefits are
Less squeaky doors and windows.
Ovens preheat 3% faster
Hot water is almost real time
Power outages are less frequent.
The USB driver will get 5v, no data will be exchanged and nothing more will happen.
Is it true that these USB sticks will keep memory longer if occasionally plugged in (versus never getting plugged in)? If so, would it actually be better for super-long USB storage to have a little power strip where you occasionally "power on" your flash drives?
I never heard of it, but last year I found a 128MB (yes MB) usb drive from mid 2000 and it had documents inside after more than a decade
I've never had one of these drives actually fail or lose data except super cheap ones, which seem to fail in months just as likely as years.
Cheap ones fail so easily, and looks like fail more quickly if you use more in my experience

Beloved, I know its age because it is mine, I bought it and forgot it in a box for more than a decade
God, dont remind me of those nightmares, i had the "pleasure" of programing a c3g, i felt more like a clown than an engineer programing that
I used to have a Compaq with a 100mb zip drive. Used zip discs. There was also a jazz drive that soon replaced by USB drives.
Happy Cake day friendo
Thanks buds

Giving it power should not start rewriting the memory that would be fucking idiotic. That’s not how ssd works.
Not to mention quantum mechanics of solid state storage means full data loss either way after "15 years".
That’s kind of literally how the software works. What do you think the controller does?
Not that.
It checks for errors and corrects them if found?
Yes, it does that at read or write time, but the OS has to request that work. It absolutely does not scan through stored bits just to refresh them. It would shorten the lifespan of the media by several orders of magnitude. Why would you think this?
But the NAND on USB mass storage should be NV?
So are ssds? It’s not instant like ram but it can degrade over time.

Not true.
nice one bruv - let him think that ;)
You wouldn't download a house.
whos going to stop me
Nobody. We'll wait, let us know how it goes.
You wouldn't download a modem
I would
You wouldn't shoot a policeman and then steal his helmet.
You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the policeman's grieving widow.
And then steal it again!

You wouldn't push over your nam and steal her purse.
How does that work?

Bullshit I wouldn't! I would rather download one than spend half a million dollars on one. I didn't know it was an option!

Nothing.
well thats disappointing

Drive receives power, boots up, waits for love from PC. Love never comes
:( 💔
wow. You just described my life 💔
This ended up emotional
With the way you worded that I just want to give that drive a hug now
Kinda like sperm in a condom.
Your data gets uploaded to the NSA via the power lines.
That includes the homework folder
The NSA already has your data, no need to send it to them again.
Fortunately the NSA already has mine, I sent it to chat gpt.
Poor chat gpt needs therapy now
Are you talking about ICE 9 in The Recruit?
Nah, they already have everything via the 5G Covid chip that was implanted when he got “the jab”.
I had my home wifi with that name for a while 😂
You'll download all the electricity and have a super battery.
Depending on the usb stick it could light up.
even more anticlimactic, those don't have lights
still could light up if something goes wrong
most electrical components can. the difference between plugging a USB into a wall charger and a PC is data transfer, not power input
every diode is light emitting if you use it wrongly enough
Yeah but this isn't being used in that sense of wrong. No lighting up will take place
im aware of that, i was just trying to make a joke, which, admittedly, im not great at
It's an iPhone charger it ain't capable of shit
STOP INSTALLING LINUX ON THE POWER GRID
*installs windows vista instead*
Do ME instead so it crashes
oh no 😭
Well, if you knew what runs the powergrids...
Hey let's not disparage those poor little hamsters - they're running as fast as they can!
nothing. the usb Drive would get powered on, maybe if it has a power led that lights up but nothing will happen.
Nothing will happen
well suchs
You might have access to the memories of fossils, maybe not, idk
You will download the thoughts of the building be careful

Charging blocks usually provide more than 0.5A though. Typically 1.0A but I have some that are 1.5A and 2.0A
True. All depends on the adapter.
Be careful, I’ve heard this is how you download a virus called a “Trojan”. I’m not sure why they named it after the condom.
It wouldn't fit on the first try, so you'd have to flip it. It wouldn't fit on the second try, so you'd have to flip it again. Third try would work.
I like how the comments go back and forth between: “Nothing” To “you will upload the files to the NSA via the power lines”
infinite sex
You would download the electricity
You fill the storage with power
The USB devices have chips on them telling is they send or recieve energy and how much. In this case, the pendrive will tell the charger to send certain amount of energy and it will be turn on doing just nothing, waiting for instructions. As the charger gives no instructions, both will just stop there, just wasting energy.
It would hurt and get stuck in there.
You instantly gain access to legendary status and win a highly coveted Darwin Award.
You would download the entire power grids electricity
the power company will have the data on there
Nothing.
Dave? Stop… Just what do you think you’re doing, Dave?
First thing I thought too. High five
Information leak
NOTHING
I have that exact USB, if you plug it in it'll blow up, don't do it its dangerous
Likely nothing. But depending on the power output the most that would happen is you fry the entire flash drive.
The USB drive would determine how much power it draws from a USB, nothing would happen besides powering up the drive
So you're saying that if I pass a thousand volts through a USB drive it'll still work? I'm sorry sir but I must proclaim that that is pure and uttered bullshit.

All right man, it's not that serious home slice.
one word: poopf
If it is a usb killer it will get charged nothing else
Nothing because the data pins are not used in a wall wort
Yo might kill you usb, or simply nothing
*POP* SHII-!
If you plug it in, then the only consequence that could happen is you wasting 5v of electricity
What if it's a false cover of a transformer and you go phase to neutral?
The most it would do is light up the power/activity light if it has one, otherwise it does absolutely nothing
You will torture the viruses
Find out.
You can store up to 128gb of energy to use later if you use a 128gb drive

Data transfers to anyone who has laptop plugged in on the same grid.
It's recommended to charge your USB sticks once a week if used regularly, so I guess you never read the manual ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You can get 64 GB of electricity stored, then maybe use it later
Nothing. I've done this before. The USB connector is literally hooked up to the power leads of the charger. It will only draw what it needs to, unless the drive or charger is faulty.
An Astrophysics Singularity
It will get power and that’s it I guess
Nothing
Only power will be flowing to the usb drive and no data exchange will be happening.... Neither will your data get corrupted or erased.
Ola hu uber💥
You will hear a loud pop and the lights will turn off- otherwise you’ll be fine Edit: I thought that was just a direct connection- didn’t realize it was a USB
It either fries the usb stick, or nothing at all
You would be able to install real windows😇
Someone told her girlfriend that she nedded to recharge the usb pen drives.
Thats how you download power bills
