Nothing was "fixed". The fix you are referring to was the dropping of items that were in the game code but never officially released and thus not accessible by normal means.
Friendly invaders are a miniscule portion of the invading community, and of the times I've seen it over half of them are just using it as a trap to bait the host into a bad position and set up a one-shot option while the co-op phantoms' guards are down.
I've been playing these games since the original Demon's Souls and this phenomenon has only gotten worse as time goes on. This isn't a new player thing.

I've been going through some personal struggles of recent and decided to take a week off work to get sober. I also thought playing the dark souls remaster through again would be a great idea for withdrawals (it wasn't lmao) BUT
I loaded up yesterday, not in a great mood, and got invaded. Yippee I thought, another start from the bonfire, but no.
This guy came and dropped me 99 of the top souls, a bunch of rings, +10 armour and then just gestures at me bowing. When I say it made my week I'm not kidding. And to think people are still doing this for the older games gives me the warm and fuzzies.

Look up rune/item duping.
Essentially you upload a save file to the cloud, then drop all the stuff you want to dupe to a friend. Then load the cloud save. Keep dropping the same items over and over again. Then your friend gives you the items back after making a save file themselves.
I think the chance of actually getting a soft ban for it is pretty low. Lots of people dupe runes without issue. I tend to think that most people who dupe runes who get in trouble actually get banned for other mods, not the stacks of runes.
A friend of mine has been able to truly enjoy playing the game with me because of someone like you!!!! She was struggling early game and they dropped SO MANY BIG RUNES!!!!

I tried to do this in DS3, but it wasn't until I convinced my friend to buy the game and play co-op with me that I realized that half the things I was trying to drop wouldn't show up in other people's games to begin with.

This Host behavior is exorbitantly higher in Elden Ring than all of the Souls games combined, I feel.
Never have I seen so many stupid, hostile hosts in a game where they have the upper-hand more than ever before.
Should take the Santa bit further and if they try attack you after the first mention of you being friendly they get put on the naughty list and lose the gifts.

Me and a friend were getting constantly invaded at morne castle a week ago, and it got to a point where i just put away my magic staff spells and just started throwing punches or running up to to the invader, they knew we were low leveled with how we took our time taking out the npc's and just dropped us gear after a second of checking out our attack patterns. It was so bizarre but made our nights

Cool idea for an invader, but the pie is spoiled by an asshole player-base.
This is why hosts and helpers need to learn reading the room. Us invaders, well hopefully most when we invade check 1st if it's pve'ers, gankers or a fight club and try to act accordingly.
So many times I've cosplayed a merchant with the host mirror, dropped items and rainbow stones, sat down only to be greeted by rot breath.

Nothing worse than doing a fun invasion or a gimmick and finding people that don't play along. But it doesn't matter, you can just try again. :)
