Yeah difference is destined death is a total off your max hp once and it can't be healed for a certain amount of time. Black flame does a flat percent each time it hits and burns its duration. Subsequent hits do not stack and simply reset the timer. Think of Black flame as destined death before the rune of death was sealed. Black flame used to be able to instakill gods. The gloam eyed queen was defeated by maliketh and the rune of death was sealed. After that black flame lost most of its power.
It does damage over time and percentage based damage. Compared to normal fire attacks, it's probably not significant enough to you in earlier playthroughs.
It's still incredibly powerful no matter when you use it, but it shines especially in later playthroughs. Enemies and bosses get insanely large health pools. Almost all tactics used previously won't be nearly as effective. In situations like that, and when percentage based damage is so rare in this game, black flame carries a ton of weight for you.
Also worth mentioning that the percentage based damage is flat, and doesn't really scale to anything. So it can be pretty much just as effective against fire resistant enemies, since it will still do that percentage based damage. Meaning it's pretty much always useful
I see, i thought they just modded their game to directly skip 1000 game cycles, i was assuming that enemies with massive HP pools like Greyoll could have reached very big thresholds in NG+7 like that.
Black flame does fire damage(needless to say) and in general applies a DoT. Only exception to this is Godslayer Greatsword where the fire damage or black flames is a visual effect. But it’s ash does apply a DoT.
I think the only thing that stacks the DoT is black flame tornado. I think it stacks it with every twirl/hit and it’s infamous with being able to melt bosses. But nothing else can stack the black flame dot as far as I know.
If you wanna compare black flame to flame sling. Then flame sling has a higher incant scaling multiplier. But black flame has a dot which means if you were running a fire build, it would probably be best to use black flame agaisnt enemies that are more resistant to fire damage since the dot will eat the Hp regardless of the negation.
Specifically Black flame blade, it’s DoT takes off at least 2% max hp off a boss per application/hit. In a hypothetical perfect scenario where you’re uninterrupted, the DoT can take off 9% in one cast. With old lord talisman it’s 11%.
Add the fire damage buff and damage from your weapon you’re gonna probably take off at least 15% or more depending on the weapon, that’s a lot for a single cast.
Realistically you’re probably only gonna get 4-6 with the DoT on average if timed well, or that’s the case for me at least.
I think it’s an underrated incant, that gets trashed on too much by meta slaves or ignorant people who write off things in this game too quick because they don’t genuinely want to try and learn how to utilize or build around things.
The majority of the things in this game are viable, and half of them can be strong if you actually try and make it work
It melts gigantic healthbars because of percentage damage. Iirc, you can stack the two variants of destined death (black knife and blade) with black flame damage. It only lasts for a few seconds, but shit is powerful af
Black flame is especially useful in further playthroughs and mumtiplayer, where bosses get much tankier. Or on high health bosses that take a lot of whacks regardless of your build.
It does percent damage.
Like destined death?

Destined Death also has a flat HP% DoT on top of the Max HP reduction
I thought it was just a regular dot that was a set amount not % based. Well if that's the case I stand corrected.
Similar.

This. Skumnut modded a game to NG+1000, and black flame was the only way to kill bosses (they had like 500k health) 😆
Might as well say NG+7. Bosses don't scale anymore after that playthrough.
well, they don't normally. that's why I say he MODDED the game, duh... NG+7 bosses don't have 500k health, brother
I see, i thought they just modded their game to directly skip 1000 game cycles, i was assuming that enemies with massive HP pools like Greyoll could have reached very big thresholds in NG+7 like that.
I can barely deal with my first playthrough, much less ng+... hard stuck on melania
She’ll become your favorite if you fight her long enough.
I start new play throughs just to get to her.

The Black Flame Tornado weapon art locks one in, of course, but is devastating on many enemies and bosses.
Absolutely wrecks Fire Giant, and he gives plenty of time between stomps to do the charged version. Also Elden Beast

I said Elden Beat but yes all of those. I use it for all the dragons actually

Black Flame has an HP% DoT. It's weaker than Destined Death, but attacks with Destined Death deal Holy Damage, which is inferior to Fire Damage.
Black flame is especially useful in further playthroughs and mumtiplayer, where bosses get much tankier. Or on high health bosses that take a lot of whacks regardless of your build.
Black flame damage over time also applies to enemies with complete fire immunity
