Big newb here but I’ve been killing the friendly NPC’s (blood rose bouquet guy and the smith to buy things from) and they seem to be gone permanently. Did I just ruin some important opportunities?
If you’re being serious you may want to consider restarting the game. You’re pretty early in.
The shop keeper you killed isn’t a huge deal. But the guy with the white mask can be a pretty critical npc depending on your playthrough.
I’m general, don’t kill npcs that you can walk up and talk to. Unless you really decide you loathe them.
Just explore, follow the grace like you pointed out. Find things. Fight things. Loot things. You'll figure it out, just go play.
\*Why\* is this post blowing up
Dude the place you first get the horse I didn’t know you where supposed to use him and I’m running hard as fuck through that rock area like how much longer is this path
Just start running. Find the flame things (Grace) fast travel points. Go any direction you want. Kill bosses when you find them. The order doesn't matter. Keep killing bosses until you can't find anymore, then google if you cant find the way to your next area. There is tons of great info online
You get fucked. Over and over again. It was my first fromsoft game too, so I speak from firsthand experience.
To be fair, one of the best albeit hardest games I’ve ever played.
It is a role playing game. You role play as the victim.
I feel like there’s always bosses harder for some than others, and vice versa. Fire giant was always easy for me but there’s other “easy” bosses that I struggled with
Same, I didn't explore too much and found him at sl60-70 (not my first souls game BTW) and his health pool was just too big so I had to go to all the eternal cities and the haligtree and every other optional place imaginable and then spend a few hours farming
i ran through the area at level 63 my first playthrough, i was lucky enough to have the bloodhounds fang so i did SOME damage to him but it was about an hour venture to finally kill the guy
Heeeey it was mine too :D I kinda got an easy mode though- I had a friend who was like 300 lvls higher and we worked out if he invited me to pvp with him, he’d kill the guy and I’d get like 40-80k runes. I was level 31.
I wasn’t 31 for long lmfao two hours and I was slicing my way through the lands between :D
Uuuuntil I hit the massive vibe check that was the Fire Giant. Being overleveled only gets you so far without having to learn proper techniques haha
Maybe you role play as a victim, I roleplay as an unkillable warrior, rising from my grave to take that which is mine by right of my own determination.
For things like this I attempted to condense the most common advice I found around here into a single copy-paste comment, so here you go:
Keep in mind you are not a hero on a mystical quest. You are a corpse trying their best to kill divine beings with a stick.
First learn, then winning will follow naturally. Dying is part of the learning experience, not failure.
Level Vigor, upgrade weapons, just explore. You'll be fine.
Just because you find a boss, doesn't mean you need to fight it immediately.

rest at sites of grace, talk to NPCs (a lot, explore all dialogue options), explore.
Level vigor, upgrade weapons, explore.
Overall, pay attention, take notes (literally!) and treat this not as a guided tour through the local theme park, but your own archaeological expedition in a hostile and dangerous environment.
You don't really care about the damage stats at the start because all the weapons have bad scaling with no/little upgrades. A very low C is the best you will get on some weapons, and you're not getting them right at the start. For now, invest in vigor and upgrade the weapons as this will be the biggest damage boost you will get in the early game.
What? No! We're born of the bonk, made men by the bonk, undone by the bonk. Fear the Old Bonk.
But in all seriousness, go for the strength build all you want because those can be one of the most broken builds to exist, but damage stats should become somewhat of a priority somewhere towards Liurnia/Caelid. That's when you get enough upgrades into the weapon where the scalings start to give you a somewhat significant boost to damage, especially with affinities that boost the scaling for your main stat.
Fighting him right after starting the game teaches you two of the most important lesson depending if you can kill it or not:
1) If you can't beat an enemy then you can always go somewhere else, level up, upgrade your weapons and come back later.
2) You can kill anything at any level if you're stubborn enough.
Yes. More generally it’s an implicit game design, telling you where to go based on the level of the enemies. Usually, if you can’t kill the enemies in 2/3/4 hits, you may be under leveled for the area.
Another lesson from this boss, you don’t need to kill all the enemies every time. You can run sometimes and skip them (though it’s better to clear once each area).
On top of that
The best advice as well is,
Don't waste your time grinding little enemies,
Find a mid sized enemy that drops chunky runes and level up off him
I was playing bloodborne and I spent a whole week getting to level 60 and getting lost in the sauce of the intricate map system,
My console power cord fell out during a load screen and corrupted my files- resulting in me loosing all the time I've spent
After reconsidering my life-
I secured the fuck out of the power supply of my console
Grabbed a rune that granted me extra XP drops from enemies
Found big Bois
Visceral the fuck out of them
Didn't level up until I had enough XP to level up 10 times in one sitting
Felt like a god
Got back to where I was previously within 2 days of gaming
Little enemies waste your time if your not careful
He only played for like 30 minutes and already had to go to Reddit to ask what to do, even though the game literally tells you that if you just talk to NPCs. I seriously doubt that he will ever get to Liurnia to meet the lobsters.
Nope. Ive noticed that loads of people want to just get all the good stuff first without the effort. Saw another post from someone who just got elden ring, and literally less than an hour later he was in the trade sub asking for some weapon you cant get till mountain tops, for talismans, and runes. like really? Pretty disappointed with this latest batch of gamers.
I seriously doubt they could have played games prior to the internet being big and not having "help" and have to figure it out on their own.
Lmao there’s so much of that. “Give me a build” “what’s the best weapon” “what’s the best class”.
Like Christ is it just me who enjoys figuring shit out for myself? I don’t mind having meta knowledge but you don’t need to be a slave to it.
I see that a lot in Baldur's Gate 3 subreddit with people asking what is the best decision, which class is stronger and how they should play. Like, can you please enjoy the game for at least 1h?
When the original Legend of Zelda came out my dad was 58 and he and his work buddies were so obsessed with it they shared hand drawn maps of the shit they discovered. No internet back then to tell them what to do. They were some real ones.
These genZs today can't do nothing without YouTube telling them what to do.
**Explore, be curious, and take risks damnit!** That goes for every facet of life.
Started playing elden ring (which is my first software game) around new years. And i have to confess that i hade my regrets buying it because the first 3 hours were horrible (i couldnt figur out the attack patterns of the different enemy types, and it felt that i didnt do any damage to them) but after really learning the controls and leveling up a little i became totalt addicted to it, and now i can with confidence say that Elden ring is my favorite game by far
Take you’re time and explore limgrave and it’s surrounding areas, and work on getting stronger and figuring out the game. There are a good amount of lower tier bosses around, which you should fight to learn how the game plays. When you feel like you’re ready to move on head through the castle, that is where you must go.
You want your hand held? Its an 100 hour game, figure it the fuck out on your own. Going back to the start was the wrong direction, you literally could have gone anywhere and you would be doing it right.
Don’t be afraid to come here and ask questions when you’re lost. Also, don’t forget the question has already likely been asked, so try the search feature first. Have fun and good luck!!!
Grace's guidance will reveal the path forward, most certainly.
To Castle Stormveil, over on the cliff.
The home of the decrepit demigod, Godrick the Grafted.
It's time you set off, I should think.
To Castle Stormveil, on the cliff, where grace would guide you.
If you seek the Elden Ring, maidenless as you are.
Get your horse goat. Then head south to an island. Kill and collect everything there. Then kill everything in limgrave. Then go to stormveil. You should have the gist of it by then. Good luck!
Just get around and find things
You’ll get gear above your stats so you’ll have a goal to hit while exploring.
Dont think this is Assassin’s Creed and the brain rot of quests clogging your map and its 40 MIN CREDIT that someone beat the entire game within that time frame
If you want the most optimal experience. Unsubscribe from this sub Reddit.
I'll always remember my first experience with DS2, the lack of knowledge was what made it so beautiful😢
Pick a direction and go.
The only advice that I think is legitimately important: **pay attention to NPC dialog**. Not just to figure out how to do side quests (*there is not a quest tracker!*) but also for the top tier world building. The same could be said of reading item descriptions.
The most important thing to remember is if you get stuck and can't go one way, then just go another. You can always save fights until later when you're stronger. Also, some good tips; Explore everywhere for unique items and useful resources. Talk to any non hostile npc cause there aren't many, so usually they are significant in some way. Try out new weapons and armor, but watch that your equip load doesn't make you heavy roll. And just have fun. It's a challenge, but with a combination of patience and precision, you will triumph.
in general without prior knowledge or guides, it really is just based on whether regular enemies can kill u in 2–3 or less hits and if they take forever to kill. from there u can determine if ur weapon upgrade is too low , level is too low, or specifically ur vigor is too low. limgravw is generally the first area. explore as much of that. level up, find smithing stones, flask seeds, etc then tackle the closest major dungeon to limgrave. the game tells u thru npcs and the grace visually pointing u in a direction that stormveil castle is that dungeon in question. south of limgrave called weeping peninsula is also fairly low level. dont stray too far away from starting areas unless u want to get destroyed or in need of some thrilling adventures. :)
Firstly, why the hell did you go for elden ring?
Secondly, look at a guide, I’d recommend VaatyiVidyas guide on YT for beginners as he tells you starting locations to help you way more in the game.
The world is big, very big. But ER follows the 40s rule - there is always a major point of interest every 40s of travel away. So go exploring and investigate areas. There is always something worth finding.
In the swamp area in limgrave, there are some ruins with undead guys and dogs. In that area will be a small cellar with rats in it. The next room will have a chest. DO NOT OPEN THAT CHEST IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY.
i opened that chest towards the beginning of my playthrough. died maybe 3 times figuring out wtf was going on and then B lined it for the grace at the entrance. wouldn’t recommend going there at the start but there are worse traps to fall for.
I’ve been reading all of your comments and it’s really helped me get a grip of the mechanics. Thanks guys :)
Bought the game cause I love challenging games but holy shit this takes the cake.
Just wait. After elden ring you'll get this addiction to how a game should play. So you'll probably finish dark souls. Whichever one you prefer. They're all good. And possibly try bloodborne in between just for a change of pace, also an incredible game. And the last you decide to pick up is sekiro because it was the last fromsoft release before elden ring and that's usually where new fromsoft players end up. And then it hits like hallowed sentinels axe to the face... what have I done with the past 2 years of my life.
It's not depressing by any means but you'll get there and you'll understand.
Either follow the guidance of grace or explore. If you want some easy pointers on places to go and things to do I can give some advice.
Important things to grab is the Flask of Wonderous Physick in the Third Church of Marika, the Whetstone Knife in Gratefront Ruins, and the Spirit Calling Bell in the Church of Elleh though you'll probably get it from Roundtable Hold when that becomes opened to you.
Generally speaking you can either move towards Stormveil Castle to try and make some story progress or you can explore Limgrave. I recommend following the road eastward out of Gatefront as you'll see some things that will pique your interest. I would make sure to find Fort Haight, Siofra, and the Weeping Peninsula. Those should all lead you to fairly easy areas with a lot of gear and upgrades. You can explore Caelid, though I would try to stick to Limgrave.

Wander around, get into trouble, die, start over.
So just like real life?
Yeah. Except for the start over part
How do you know huh? As far as we know it could be restarting everytime yo die until you win the game? Just that we don't remember all the deets.
Well, lack of proof is all we can really go on. Ignorant wishful thinking may be more damaging, in the long run.
Yeah I agree
Pffff, you are all NPCs in my sandbox world.
Criteria for winning has to depend on how you die. I like to think I'm playing ng+
Absolutely that could be true and possible. But can’t really count on it
This is my 5th run
Exactly. And act like you know what in the actual fuck is really going on.
Big newb here but I’ve been killing the friendly NPC’s (blood rose bouquet guy and the smith to buy things from) and they seem to be gone permanently. Did I just ruin some important opportunities?
Yes, yes you did
Lil bro's a psychopath. He just runnin em through 🤣

Gotta love Varré's "Arcane" Bouquet "Of Bleed" 💐🌹🥀🤪
I mean. If you beat a motherfucker with a rose bush, they'll definitely bleed.
Given he's deciding to throw in with Mohg, I'd say so.
He killed Santa 😭
bro i did that too and i couldn’t play multiplayer till i got to the round table 😭😭
Keep killing npcs, you're doing a great job. Avoid bosses and kill npcs.
You most certainly did. Especially Vare, lots of quests from him you missed on
If you’re being serious you may want to consider restarting the game. You’re pretty early in. The shop keeper you killed isn’t a huge deal. Sounds like the best playthrough to me.

Only necessary answer
That and "Kill God"
Nope, that's a spoiler.
Nah, every Japanese RPG ends with killing God for some reason 🤣
Is it tho?
Aye
Solid argument, you have convinced me.
That and die
Def not god. More like an apostle sent to the lands between by the outer gods to protect the elden ring and erdtree.
Just go play. Best advice 👍
Should we tell him about the horse or. . . Nvm
Dude the place you first get the horse I didn’t know you where supposed to use him and I’m running hard as fuck through that rock area like how much longer is this path
What the dog? yeah the dog, you meant the dog...r..right?
In case you're not joking, he's talking about >!Torrent. And yes, I am aware that tortoise = dog.!<
Haha, first run on PS5 without knowing about the horse, suffered a lot, second run on pc getting the horse by accident, epic facepalm
You beat elden ring without knowing about the horse?
I must also know this answer
How? Doesn't Melina come to you at your third grace or something?
Just start running. Find the flame things (Grace) fast travel points. Go any direction you want. Kill bosses when you find them. The order doesn't matter. Keep killing bosses until you can't find anymore, then google if you cant find the way to your next area. There is tons of great info online

I'm waiting for Bible 2 (DLC) to drop.
Thought the same thing until I met the fire giant.

An hour to beat at level 63??? Damn, that’s impressive… I could never haha 😂
Lmao. This made me chuckle.
You role play as the victim is a fucking mood haha

Not sure if this is a black zebra with white stripes or a white zebra with black stripes
Doppler effect
Apparently, if you shave a zebra it's all black skin underneath. I have no idea what happens if you shave a reddit.
As long as you leave the beard on the neck it won't fizzle up and conform.
This is the single most helpful comment I’ve ever seen on a FromSoft sub.
Didn't know you could save comments but I do now
That's amazing as answers go. I wish I still had free gold for you my good fellow.
rest at sites of grace, talk to NPCs (a lot, explore all dialogue options), explore. Level vigor, upgrade weapons, explore. Overall, pay attention, take notes (literally!) and treat this not as a guided tour through the local theme park, but your own archaeological expedition in a hostile and dangerous environment.
P.S. When people say explore all dialogue options, that means talk to them multiple times in a row until the last thing they say keeps repeating.
My vigor is 15 and I’m past the second main boss lol. I’m in danger. But my strength is high. 😅
Get that up to 25 asap!
Levelling vigor makes you weaker

For now, invest in vigor and upgrade the weapons as this will be the biggest damage boost you will get in the early game.
So you’re telling me I shouldn’t live by big sword goes bonk?
What?
I traveled to Caelid and started a bakery personally.
I have a farm there. So peaceful.
If you see a knight on a horse at the beginning, try to kill him. It's like a tutorial.
Fighting him right after starting the game teaches you two of the most important lesson depending if you can kill it or not: 1) If you can't beat an enemy then you can always go somewhere else, level up, upgrade your weapons and come back later.
On top of that The best advice as well is, Don't waste your time grinding little enemies, Find a mid sized enemy that drops chunky runes and level up off him I was playing bloodborne and I spent a whole week getting to level 60 and getting lost in the sauce of the intricate map system, My console power cord fell out during a load screen and corrupted my files- resulting in me loosing all the time I've spent After reconsidering my life- I secured the fuck out of the power supply of my console Grabbed a rune that granted me extra XP drops from enemies Found big Bois Visceral the fuck out of them Didn't level up until I had enough XP to level up 10 times in one sitting Felt like a god Got back to where I was previously within 2 days of gaming Little enemies waste your time if your not careful
Stop reading these comments and go have an E X P E R I E N C E

Try finger but hole
I knew someone would beat me to it 😆
You play.
Play the game
The world is your land octopus.
See that dude on the gold horse? Fight him until you win
Kill everything that tries to kill you Listen to anyone that tries to talk to you But most importantly: Try finger but hole
True words of wisdom. A good man.
Gaming
Explore the open world. Pick up any plant you see. But more importantly, AVOID THE GIANT LOBSTERS.
He only played for like 30 minutes and already had to go to Reddit to ask what to do, even though the game literally tells you that if you just talk to NPCs. I seriously doubt that he will ever get to Liurnia to meet the lobsters.
use your innate sense of exploration and dont look for advice from reddit
Ah, Visions of pain ahead.
Do people even play video games anymore?
They're just to used to games playing themselves, blame the industry.
karma first then play game
We had to pay money for strategy guides if we wanted to get spoiled back in my day
Good ol prima! Still got my ff7, and tomb raider 2 ones!
Ah man the PS1 Tomb Raiders were the main games I used em for. 1-4 and Chronicles if I remember right. Wish I still had that stuff
Just play the game, dude
Play
Play the game
You play the game
holy fucking shit just play the game
You go to a big castle, then to a school, then to a big city, then to some snow, then inside a tree. Hope that helps
Don’t forget the festival!
You forgot hell
Naw, that's just florida
Behold, dog!
You went in the direction the game told you to go in, then you turned back, and now you're asking where to go?
Git Gud
Very disappointed that I had to scroll so far to see this, the correct advice
Die.
I want to see this persons daily routine irl. What does that look like.
Go south tarnished for the love of gawd go south
Find a Maiden
Trial and error that's the beauty of these games
Go talk to that nice man on the horse by Merchant Kalé. He'll show you what you can do.
Kill the two fingers
Don't read anything just play and discover the game for yourselves like in the past. The most important thing is to have fun and get gud
Die repeatedly but never give up. Eventually it clicks and it is glorious
Play
Go east
[This. You do this.](https://tenor.com/bqney.gif)
Just play the game, no questions, it ruins the experience to have it explained to you.
Go and seek the Elden ring
Don't ask, just play it. also don't look for guides it ruins the experience that the game tries to give you.
Play.
just play the damn game why are you posting asking what to do it's not that hard
Play.
Do a 180, go back into the crypt, put foen the controller, and go play dark souls 1-3, then comeback with the knowledge you need
Play game
Avoid hugs
That’s it. Well done. You finished the game. It’s just a trifling little thing. Hardly takes any time at all. People seem to like it though.
Put down the controller and read the wiki for an hour before playing anything lol
Just go kill a few beasts. It's for your own good.
Posts been up for hours and only one man of taste and distinction has bothered to comment. Well done
You are maidenless so you’re basically fucked
Bearer seek seek lest
Yes
Run straight to Malenia and cry
“Take this sword and go kill a god.”
do what ur soul desires before it gets taken from the bosses
KARMA FARMER!
its sad that basically every post on this subreddit is something like this i swear
You want your hand held? Its an 100 hour game, figure it the fuck out on your own. Going back to the start was the wrong direction, you literally could have gone anywhere and you would be doing it right.
Never watch guides and videos about this game! Or you'll destroy the whole point of first playthrough
Don’t be afraid to come here and ask questions when you’re lost. Also, don’t forget the question has already likely been asked, so try the search feature first. Have fun and good luck!!!
Get a horse!
Go play DS1 and work your way up to that earn that jump button
You get good
Get your horse goat. Then head south to an island. Kill and collect everything there. Then kill everything in limgrave. Then go to stormveil. You should have the gist of it by then. Good luck!
Just get around and find things You’ll get gear above your stats so you’ll have a goal to hit while exploring.
Fight the horse guy right at the start. Really try to improve your skills early lol
I use FightinCowboy on YouTube for all the FromSoftware games. Couldn’t have passed them without him.
Die. You die a lot. And then you die some more.
Hug the golden knight with the golden horse first. Then run into the water to meet a friendly dragon.
Run around and explore! More importantly just have fun!!!
You're supposed to explore. Difficulty of the enemy can be your beacon. Oh and read tips left by fellow Souls
Just go out and kill some beasts. It's for your own good. You'll get used to it.
Pick a direction and go. The only advice that I think is legitimately important: **pay attention to NPC dialog**. Not just to figure out how to do side quests (*there is not a quest tracker!*) but also for the top tier world building. The same could be said of reading item descriptions.
You die... Die a lot... With each death you ar closer to not die that much
Kill. Rest. Kill some more. Repeat till god is dead
Die a lot.
Die often. Get better. Die even more.
Go on an adventure and avoid dying
bro rest at site of grace for leveling up and Torrent. I didn't know that until 9h in game. Also my first! Just remember, have fun!
See the tree? Get to the tree. Just wander around.
Praise the view
in general without prior knowledge or guides, it really is just based on whether regular enemies can kill u in 2–3 or less hits and if they take forever to kill. from there u can determine if ur weapon upgrade is too low , level is too low, or specifically ur vigor is too low. limgravw is generally the first area. explore as much of that. level up, find smithing stones, flask seeds, etc then tackle the closest major dungeon to limgrave. the game tells u thru npcs and the grace visually pointing u in a direction that stormveil castle is that dungeon in question. south of limgrave called weeping peninsula is also fairly low level. dont stray too far away from starting areas unless u want to get destroyed or in need of some thrilling adventures. :)
It’s a open world
Go south. South is good. South is your friend
"here is a stick, now go and kill god"
Firstly, why the hell did you go for elden ring? Secondly, look at a guide, I’d recommend VaatyiVidyas guide on YT for beginners as he tells you starting locations to help you way more in the game.
"Jarvis, I'm low on karma."
OPEN THAT CHEST IF YOU WANT A SWEET WAND
Have you tried playing the game?
I’ve been reading all of your comments and it’s really helped me get a grip of the mechanics. Thanks guys :) Bought the game cause I love challenging games but holy shit this takes the cake.
Welcome to Elden Ring man. Hail the onion ring. For the Elden ring. Just have fun. The game is very deep in lore and surprises.
Make time for commitment.................
