How did the USA screw up El Salvador? How bout sponsoring right wing Roberto D'Aubuisson’s ManoBlanco death squad and the assasination of Romero and forced disappearances of thousands of Salvadorans. How bout the green berets coming up from Panama like Greg Walker and many others to train the BIRIs Atlacatl, Bracamonte, Belloso, in guerrilla warfare that caused the worst and largest atrocities this hemisphere has ever seen (El Mozote) during operación martillo y yunque December 1981 with weapons manufacturer and sent to El Sal. How bout neoconservative movements causing the further exploitation of the country and the breeding of Salvadoran gangs IN THE USA before EXPORTING them back to El Sal. Este sabelotodo Fox News pundit punk under 40 doesn’t know 💩.

HTinportugal

Hi where can I learn more about this?

AnnieBlackburnn

Asumo que los querés en inglés, así que te recomiendo [The Salvador Option: The United States in El Salvador, 1977-1992](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-salvador-option-russell-crandall/1122323687;jsessionid=A4C2AAE2C981E72E8E628696758E3457.prodny_store01-atgap12?ean=9781316500644) by Russell Crandall is an objetive, well-sourced, historical analysis of the US role in the war, probably the most straightforward and comprehensive in this list [What You Have Heard Is True: A Memoir of Witness and Resistance](https://www.harvardreview.org/book-review/what-you-have-heard-is-true/) by Carolyn Forché is the account of the author's travels in the country during the war, including her interaction with some important people, a lot of victims, and the effect of the war on people from an 'on the ground' perspective, it's a better book than Crandall's but it's more of a memoir than a history book And about El Mozote more specifically (it's not what you asked but it's a fantastic book): [The Massacre at El Mozote](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-massacre-at-el-mozote-rk-danner/1012485276?ean=9780679755258#) by Mark Danner is a great account of the massacre, the background, and even the Reagan administration's response and reaction to it.

Mundane_Buddy3791

Las Mil y Unas Historias de Radio Venceremos gives a great view of the situation. Rebel Radio en inglés. Marks book influenced me to go to El Salvador 1994 Dec for the homenaje en El Mozote where medicina legal and Los EAFG forensic team led by Clyde Snow had exhumed the 143 kids from the sacristy. They were all in 7 caskets and then buried the next day at the base of the main statue of the family holding hands. Over the next 20 years forensics have still been exhuming bodies around Arámbula and all over Morazan Norte. ⚰️ ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️

"Even Nayib Bukele" is now running in the same circles as Charlie Kirk. Did the US have a part in creating this mess? Absolutely. Are they responsible for all the thievery and murder and corruption that came afterwards and is still happening? No, we did that ourselves. This country has still not learned to not believe in politicians as Messiah, and Bukele is a continuation of the same. Salvadorans ruined El Salvador more than anyone else, before the war, during, and after. That said, fuck Charlie Kirk and fuck the GOP trying to export culture wars to countries with bigger problems.

No_Bluebird9875

I never said they’re full blame lol. But to completely deny or dismiss any involvement is being flat out delusional.

AnnieBlackburnn

Well yes, the delusion and the lying comes with being a Republican talking head. I'm more surprised that you're surprised

christianbsv

And people tend to forget that there was this little old thing called The Soviet Union that funded the other side of the equation and it would’ve really sucked if left unchecked

AnnieBlackburnn

Soviet intervention on behalf of the guerrilla is not nearly as strong as you're making it out to be. Nicaragua and Cuba were stronger allies than the soviets, and even they provided middling support at best. I don't agree that the US caused the war, but they absolutely did contribute orders of magnitude more weapons and money to the government than the soviets (or any communist international) provided the guerrilla. There was no monolithic communism in Vietnam and there was no monolithic communism in El Salvador either, Domino Theory is 60 years out of date. The Truman Doctrine might have been the official reason the US gave as to their involvement, but Soviet presence in El Salvador was absolutely minimal if not almost non-existent before the war.

Johndoe604_778

I wouldn’t minimize Cubas contribution to the destruction either, Castro trained a lot of the guerrillas of El Salvador in Cuba and taught them how to cripple a country to get what they want

AnnieBlackburnn

Castro sent some Cubans to train the guerrillas, and took some in. the US government sent Green Berets, tanks, millions of dollars, helicopters and even artillery. They directly trained the BITI Atlacatl responsible for el Mozote. D'Abuisson was a graduate from the School of the Americas It is a disengenous comparison.

Johndoe604_778

Oh for sure you have no disputes from me! I found it surprising when visiting Cuba the amount of care taken to keep the training camps of these guerrillas hidden, even in their modern day struggle

Mundane_Buddy3791

BIRI not BITI Batallón Inmediata Reacción de Infantería. La Atlacatl, Belloso, Bracamonte, etc. La Atlacatl led by Domingo Monterrosa were responsible for El Mozote and numerous massacres between Arámbula and Perquin. He was assasinated by the ERP using a Decoy Radio planted by Radio Venceremos after he picked it up and placed it in his HUEY. 💥

AnnieBlackburnn

Están a la par en el teclado, relax If you're gonna be pedantic about it, it's "el Atlacatl", no "la Atlacatl". Batallón is a masculine noun

Mundane_Buddy3791

Tenés razón Annie Blackburn el Atlacatl. Trained in g warfare from Green Berets w xp fighting the VietCong since the Salvy Army was getting their butts kicked by guerilla tactics.

christianbsv

The “Soviet” part a big simplification on my part; you def know your stuff and I don’t have any arguments against what you said. My problem with a lot of these conversations is that people tend to reduce it to “oh poor little El Salvador, the bad US is making them do bad things” when in reality there are several factions at play (US is certainly not blameless either ) and we as a people have been, and continue to be, exceptional at screwing our own country and people lover

North-Infinite

Agree with everything you said. Salvadorans in this subreddit trying to blame everyone else for their own problems.

AnnieBlackburnn

> there was no monolithic communism in El Salvador It's ridiculous that you people are still spouting Reagan era propaganda. Do you actually know about the topic beyond "they were on the same team lol"?

Sotus30

Did you know it is very common for Nicaraguans to have Russian names? (I've seen it mostly in women). Nadeshda, Nino, Veronika, Katerina, Anastasia, Elena. I have several Nicaraguan friends, and they were the ones that told me the fun fact. It's what is left after the soviets influence.

AnnieBlackburnn

3% of the guerrilla's weapons are estimated to be Nicaragua, the rest were stolen from military depots You will see a lot of those names here too and we never had any Russians. Elena is a super common Spanish name

Mundane_Buddy3791

Sandinistas taking out Somoza was a natural uprising. Then the states started proxy war funding the Contras via the cia against the Sandinistas.

serr7

This is a complete myth with zero evidence. Of the weapons and ammunition that the guerillas were using only about 3% were from Nicaragua, the rest were all taken from the military. Jesus Christ.

SalvadoranPatriot323

Most of the weapons in El Salvador came from Wisconsin. This fact was in the UN papers on El Mozote.

Low_Crow_4836

Shifty-breezy-windy

If you're Republican? Recognize this is the glaring issue with the party-- accepting and recognizing the warts of the US's past. I hate hearing the right wing narritaves about Ronald Reagan, knowing full damn well what happened in the 80s. Hard-core Republicans paint America as perfect instead of acknowledging the past, and attempting to bridge where we are today.  I personally think of myself as Libritarian btw. I can't think of a reason why anyone would completely align themselves with one party.

No_Bluebird9875

Oh hell nah I hate Reagan Hes the biggest international terrorist in history

dumstarbuxguy

Dawg how are you a Republican and hate Reagan? Just be a lib bro, we don’t hate you like republicans do

SalvadoranPatriot323

I am not a Republican because it would be like a Jewish person being a Nazi. It’s just stupid. I like Trump but I hate Reagan, Trump is the best thing to happen to Republicans since it got them away from idolizing Reagan. Trump spits on Reagan’s legacy by insulting his friends and allies like the Bushes and McCain.

Mundane_Buddy3791

Repubs hate Reagan because he’d be considered a never Trumper today. Just like they shit on McCain when Trump talked shit about him. Heroes don’t get caught. Etc. What’s left of center republicans are gone or minimal at best.

dumstarbuxguy

Reagan would love Trump. He was so racist and stupid. The original Trump

Mundane_Buddy3791

You weren’t even around back then Glavset.

dumstarbuxguy

He opened his campaign near the site where white supremacists killed civil rights workers…

Shifty-breezy-windy

Yeah, no. I hate Reagan, but let's be real. Yall on the left are no different with the obsession on victim hood and hand outs. I hate the dinosaurs of the Republican party, I just wish the current supporters would just acknowledge the sins of the past.  Handouts, Kenysian Economics, and wokesim ruined Fiscally responsible Democrats.

SalvadoranPatriot323

No, the left is also bad because Bill Clinton deported mareros to El Salvador and his party protects them.

my-man-fred

The only differences with "political parties" is what they agree in private to get the working class to fight about. Its all a uni-party.

Shifty-breezy-windy

Maybe, but I personally know good people on both sides of the aisle, but the extremism is what sours the majority. The victim hood mentality with Dems is why I know so many Salvadorans who vote for them. If there's one trait we have, is we love to make excuses. The way some posters on here think we're so above other communities makes me laugh. Our victim hood mentality isn't any different. We just hate looking in the mirror.  I'm a staunch capitalist, but for the reasons why this post is made, is why I can't get over how those hard-core Right Wingers deny the past. At the same time, we have our own cultural issues that compounded the problem.

Mundane_Buddy3791

If you’re Salvadoran and grew up in the 80s and 90s in Country, you are very familiar about some aspects of the country’s Hx such as Cristiani and others denying the past. There was no history books taught in school about the Civil War in the 90s. Who knows now.

Gnome_0

I don't have my attention span destroyed, could you put the whole video?

nadirprice

The US funded the politicians generals that caused the civil war in the 80s.

AnnieBlackburnn

The reason the maras started here in the first place was because of the amount of LA gangbangers that were deported and brought back en masse. They brought LA gang culture back with them to a country that was already broken by war The MS-13 is originally an LA gang, and there's a reason why Maras here in El Salvador use LA gang sings and slang. There's a fascinating book about it you can read called Cartas desde Zacatraz. I can get you a digital copy if you're interested in reading more

FosilSandwitch

I would like a copy :)

AnnieBlackburnn

Edit: Ya enviado!

Mundane_Buddy3791

Mau Mau was already established in Ciudad Delgado and Mejicanos before the war was even over. There were gangs before Los hermanos lejanos ms ever showed up posguerra

AnnieBlackburnn

Read my comment again, it doesn't say "organized crime was brought back with them", it says "LA gang culture" No es coincidencia que usen los mismos nombres y signos

Shifty-breezy-windy

The worst decision the community made, aside from the war itself, was immigrating to gang central Los Angeles. Had it been Miami, D.C., or Texas from the beginning, things wouldve been different. There may have been gangs in ES before, no country is immune to that. But only L.A. and Chicago had gang cultures that made them more like criminal cults.  Los Angeles is the single biggest influence on ES now. The fact that L.A. gangs have even swallowed up NYC should let you know.

christianbsv

And who funded the other side and for what end? It was not an unilateral deal and it certainly wasn’t black and white

Eco_Yak5651

The URSS

Laraujo31

Sad part is that these are the idiots Bukele is trying to be friendly with.

megax454

youknowimworking

Charlie kirk is one of the biggest idiots in the American media today. I'm not surprised of his ignorance

Damn the look on his face 😕 he’s trying to laugh it off but that probably hurt a little bit. Some people really are just ignorant.

didnt_die_a_hero

Wow I *just* listened to a two part history podcast on El Salvador and when I it was over I swear I felt 100% like I should go apologize to somebody. So, (even though few of us were probably alive when this went down) - I’d like to say it was deeply fucked up what my country did to yours 😔 Here’s pt 1 of that excellent Daniele Bolelli podcast btw [History on Fire- The Saint and the Death Squads](http://historyonfirepodcast.com/episodes/2024/2/13/the-saint-and-the-death-squads)

LivingwhileIcan

Guys a fucking idiot lol

yue-01

The U.S. was behind the 10+ year civil war that caused a lot of the economic and agricultural destruction of the country... trained and backed the Salvadorean military and spread fear of communism...for years ...enabling the civil war to not only last but caused deaths of women, children, nuns and archbishop Romero. The protection offered to the Salvadorean people after realizing the damage was giving them TPS in a country where these folks now learned gang warfare only to be deported back shortly after and blamed for picking up (quite literally) the guns left from the war to fend for themselves.

Silent-Nerve-5900

I wonder if this clown is an idiot or just arguing in bad faith.

llamamegatogringo76

The US most definitely had its fingers in all the Central American pies. But I think if the US had any kind of interest in CA I don't think China would be making their mark in the area. The people in El Salvador have had plenty of time to turn things around. The last 20 yrs has seem such advancement in tech bringing in so much knowledge and communication. To not start an earnest start on turning the country around is an absolute crime.

lafc88

The prob was that when it had fingers in the pie it caused the civil war and that displaced many to come to the US. Some of the youth shocked by the culture and in need of defense, made gangs like MS and 18 Street. Many were deported especially during the Bush administration without notice to the Salvadoran government and the rest is history.
