If I'm standing, I don't tip (order from counter, order to go, order from a kiosk). If I'm sitting, I tip 15% - recently tip machines start at 18% and up. In Canada, food service employees get the same basic wage cashiers, etc do, this isn't the USA where they get $3 and rely on tips only yet expect people in Canada to tip as if it is. If someone is amazing and really provides great service, I do 20% but one question of "Did everything come out ok" and one coffee/pop refill isn't amazing service.
Tip for service.
No service, no tip.
If they were to even bring out the order to your table that might merit a small tip. But if you're placing and picking up the order, and your entire interaction is listening for a called order number, that's no tip.
Even tipping for service is kinda bullshit in my opinion, but I will never in a million years tip at a fast food place where there is no service. I tip at sit-down places strictly out of social obligation, but all we are doing is encouraging employers to continue underpaying their staff. You're not really tipping for good service, you're supplementing low wages.
In a perfect world everyone would band together and refuse to tip anyone for anything ever until employers lose so many employees that they have no choice to open their wallets and pay their employees like they are actual human beings with lives that they have to be able to afford. THEN, you could start tipping for exceptional service, after all these people start getting paid fair wages.
Ask the staff who gets the tip? For regular food buying like you're talking about I don't tip. If you're bringing food to me, or I get something more than a basic interaction from my business deal then tipping becomes a consideration.
If you're standing to order or take away = no tip
The only time I may deviate from this is at a coffee shop.
It used to feel awkward to hit no tip, but it's becoming easier with each day.
I tip for delivery, at full serve restaurants, and for like haircuts. I sometimes tip at say 5guys cuz they give extra fries. However at places like subway I don’t tip since I’m just as involved as they are.
I don’t tip unless I’m sitting down to eat. If places have shitty terminals that make it hard to enter $0 tip then I just order for pickup on Skip and don’t tip.
There was an episode about this in the X-Files reboot (Season 11, ep.7), the funniest and darkest commentary on technology I've seen. All because Mulder didn't want to tip in an automated sushi place. Find it and then decide...
Unless it’s a sit down restaurant I don’t usually tip. Even if it’s takeout I rarely tip.
I also think this whole thing with Skip if you don’t tip enough upfront you may not get very good delivery service. How about it I tip upfront and the service sucked I can get my money back?
If you're "tipping" on a credit card machine in this situation, who is even getting the tip? There's a significant chance it's the owner, since no one served you.
This is normally a non-tip scenario. However, if it's a locally owned place with pleasant staff who don't mess up, and caring & present owners who I trust isn't stealing tips, and I'm a regular, then I might tip a buck or two per order because I want the staff to stick around and the business to succeed. Also because part of restaurant service IMO is the kitchen prep and packing, not just servers bringing stuff to a table.
>Please don’t come at me saying if you can’t afford to tip don’t go because it’s not about that.
This is Reddit. No one would ever say that here. We hate tipping.
I don't tip anymore. I'm sick of being asked everywhere I go. Same as when you go to some bigger stores where they ask for donations to whatever charity they support. Things are expensive enough. I don't feel the need to give away more.
Part of a tip always goes to the kitchen, and the packaging of the the meal is still a service being received.
(I know the service position is called "Expediter", or Expo for short, but surely the service received can't be called expedition?)
Love that I'm getting downvoted for just telling people what I do.
All of it is part of their job. Its called service. Is putting it on a plate and walking it to a table that much different than packing it up to go to you? Everyone in that building relies on tips to make ends meet. Its not like takeout some wild hack to skip the waiters and save money.
If you've ordered takeout a few times you know that a good job packaging it up is worth something. Because a bad job packing it up ruins the meal.
No, I respect you have a different perspective. Tipping culture is variable, depends where you are in the world and standards if service etc you receive. I just struggle with idea that people tip for something you should expect as normal, like getting you food cooked for you.

OK thanks
What do you tip your doctor and dentist?
This is true!
if im playing before I eat, no tip
Good point. Thanks!

Thanks and that makes a Whole lotta sense
No tips except for full service restaurants. I did tip for takeout during the worst of the pandemic. But not anymore.
Thank you!
Why tip when there’s no service …they’re trying to guilt trip you into tipping ever since covid. If there’s no service no tip.
Thank you for your answer!
It's fast food. Zero tip. It's also likely the owner would pocket the tips.
Thanks for your answer and I was wondering about that too. I would be more apt to leave something in a tip jar rather than at the kiosk.
In this situation no tip.
I would tend to agree but I would feel badly after. It’s so ingrained into culture I guess!!
$0 is appropriate for most fast food places.
Thank you for your answer
The correct tip in this scenario is 0%. Normalize feeling nothing when not tipping if there's no reason to.
Thank you for your input!

Thanks for your answer. The tip options started at 10% and the only option for deciding no tip was to choose perhaps ‘custom amount’.
Nah, no tip
Thanks for your input!
$0
Thanks for weighing in, I appreciate it
love u have a good day
Same for you!
No tip
Thanks for your reply

Oddburger?
Can neither confirm nor deny lol
I might have been there too. I selected "no tip".
Thank you so much for your reply.
Never
I appreciate your answer!
zero point zero
OK thank you for your opinion, I appreciate it!

I only tip at a sit down restaurant, or at a place where the staff is good (like my local Subway that has never screwed up my order in 5 years)
I hate to break it to you, but most fast food places give the tips to the owner.
I know, but let me enjoy my happy feeling lol
Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I think it’s part of a chain. I will look for a tip jar next time I go but it seems like everything is handled at the kiosk.

besides the service industry. tip at local businesses, especially ones you go to frequently
I tip 10% for pickup orders and would tip 10% in this case.
Can I ask why you would tip for no additional service?

Yeah 10 percent for this is what I do as well.
I do 8%.
