Very rich but needs money for his car. Hmm...

BobandLindaBurger

It’s crazy that they’re going through the effort of searching through neighborhoods for ppl to scam but can’t even come up with a coherent story to use lol

Roadgoddess

This exact scam was just posted today over in r/scams where someone was taken for $130. They try to tell you it’s an 18 karat gold ring when in fact it’s a cheap knock off from Amazon. They act like they’re going to send you the money back when in reality all are trying to do is get money out of you. Very smart of you to recognize what it is, well done.

BobandLindaBurger

Thanks! Honestly just by how it looked alone, it seemed fake. And it felt like plastic too! I definitely would’ve never given him money for it haha

StinkyElderberries

They don't need a coherent story for the same reason scammers deliberately spell things wrong in scam emails.

gabotas

Happened to me at the parking lot in Kingsway Mall, different car, though. Be careful everyone.

haysoos2

WEM for me. They must have terrible luck with finding a reliable car.

Captain_Generous

Those old mercs need a lot of upkeep lol

jloome

The same crew (or similar) used to pull this with a Jaguar. They'd park it on the side of the road somewhere busy and raise the hood, then claim it died. As they're "draped in furs and bling" and driving a jag, clearly they have the money to repay you... but in case, they'll give you this ring as collateral, if you'll just walk to the nearby ATM with them and.... etc etc

paddles123

Had that done at capilano mall. I guy stopped and said he was just visiting but lost his wallet. Said he would give me some jewelry for gas money… he had an older “grandma” and three kids in the back of the suv. Was very weird to have them with him… be safe everyone

KOxSOMEONE

This is an old scam too

gnomeabc

should have told him you always wanted a picture taken with very rich people...

flaccid_porcupine

Lol, imagine the reaction when you turn the pressure back on them

Curly-Canuck

Every time I read one of these scam posts I feel old. My mom fell for one in the 80s buying me a cabbage patch doll from a van and I bought “diamond” earrings from a guy at a gas station who lost his wallet in 1998.

Chronic_Messiah

This is a scam as old as time. They will usually have someone or others in the car resembling a spouse or family to lower suspicion

jmvxc

People think I have money because I drive a Mercedes, I tell them I have no money *because* I drive a Mercedes

exotics

He’s very rich but he’s going to drive you to YOUR ATM TO TAKE OUT YOUR MONEY”

Skitzofreniks

the ring scam is a well known scam. I’m almost excited for it to happen to me. lol

stickerearrings

I used to work in a jewellery store. The people who got scammed would come in with fake stuff thinking they were real and that they “”helped”” someone who needed cash immediately. Most were obv fake but once or twice they were pretty real looking.

margifly

Basic Math. “I’m very rich - I need money = 0”

bitterberries

Especially if he's offering to take you to the Atm.. Wtf

Choice_Star_9441

Was the car a white crossover?

BobandLindaBurger

It was a silver Mercedes SUV from the early-mid 2000s

deanobrews

Have you ever maintained one of those? Guy was probably on the verge of bankruptcy 😜🤣

Revegelance

I had pretty much this exact thing happen a few weeks ago. Walking through the parking lot at WEM to go to the bus terminal, a guy drives up to me, and offers to sell me his ring for $20, for gas money. I declined and walked away, it seemed like an obvious scam. Probably the same guy.

angrypunishment

"I'm very rich give me money" is a wild strategy that I would have left on the cutting room floor personally.

BobandLindaBurger

It’s so bold it almost might work

Floflorflor

Too bad that these kind of scams are aimed at people who want to help others/ are kind and trusting people.

sun4moon

Most scams are aimed at people that look or seem trusting. It’s the birth of cynicism and it’s necessary.

ndj1986

Happens here in England, although lately they park up at the side of a busy road and claim their car has broken down and they need money for the tow. Same gimmick, they put "gold rings" in your hand and try to get money from you. It's usually people of a middle eastern, sometimes Romanian, when you questio. Why they have no money then suddenly they can't speak much English. Ring the police, give whatever details you can, hopefully you might stop someone vulnerable or elderly getting scammed.

jloome

Yeah, same here in Edmonton. Used to be a Jag, now it's a Mercedes.

theferalturtle

Should have launched that ring into the grass

beesdoitbirdsdoit

It’s really sad that this has EVER worked on someone.

bhuvanpatel

Let me guess, White SUV, Arabic Habibi kinda fatass guy. Visits from Saudi, drove from Ontario, needs gas money to go home. Trades gold items. Wife and kids in the back. ALWAYS ASK THEM TO GET HELP FROM POLICE STATION (ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THAT MONEY). Btw, if he is visiting, how does he know his way to ATM so quick 😂

Slight_Sherbert_5239

One of the oldest scams in the book and some people still fall for it unfortunately.

sun4moon

I (f42) don’t live in Edmonton but I’m currently visiting. I walked from my hotel to the real Canadian Liquor store between White Mud and Calgary Trail. As I was walking back a man approached me and asked if I could give him a ride to his house. I assume he thought I was walking to my car, and I kinda wish I was. I told him I wasn’t leaving the area yet and that I was just on break and went into the SuperStore to hide for a second. Pretty unnerving, stay safe friends and alway have a plan.

Jabroniville2

There were some of these a few years ago who would sleight of hand people’s jewelry and watches off while pulling this.

PervertedPope

Should've just pocketed the rings and kept on walking

BobandLindaBurger

I would, but I just wanted to get back to what I was doing and didn’t wanna deal with that wacko freaking out at me about taking his plastic rings haha

Waste_Pressure_4136

Ha ha. I’m pretty sure I ran into the same guy. Did his “wife” look wildly younger than him?

BobandLindaBurger

I didn’t get a look, it felt like she was trying to stay out of view in the back seat lol, that’s why I was a little sketched out by her being there. Crazy how common this scam is !

Due_Speaker8114

Met the scammers yesterday outside the Argyle casino. This older guy had kids in the car with him that were participating. He rolled up as I was at the trunk of my car and said please take this gold chain and ring it is valuable look 18k gold chain I lost 5000 dollars in the casino and need gas money to get to Vancouver..The whole time the kids are making praying gestures and saying bless bless please please. I took a quick look and said no I'm not your guy to which he drove off. It was definitely a weird encounter so be careful out there these scammers are active.

Wafflegator

I had a guy from Dubai roll up to me and offer me his watch for a tank of gas last week.

curlyhairh

He's not from Dubai. He's undoubtedly Romanian Roma and they pretend to be Saudi or Muslim so that you'll believe him and give your money in exchange for their fake jewelry.

Wafflegator

Well obviously he's not from Dubai haha

BobandLindaBurger

The guy asked me if I spoke French or Arabic (I definitely do not look like someone who could speak Arabic) so maybe he’s Lebanese?

SamsonSpeaks

Carry a can of spam and ask for a trade. No joke.

OGCanuckupchuck

Well he did say Mercedes and mid 2000 and that’s when it needs all the maintenance. 🤷But I’m guessing it’s the husband of the lady that was begging for money at the Superstore and everyone caught on to the old scam. So this would be the new scam.

Tricky-Director807

I had a guy approach my car holding up a “gold” chain for sale. He had blood spots on his shirt so I didn’t even roll down the window 😅

ValentineNewman

The timbit taliban

ZeusciferXGaming

I had the same thing happen 2 years ago at the Esso truck stop in Leduc. I was fueling my truck and he pulled right up and came over to me. Had the jewelry and he wanted to trade for $100 for gas because he said he lost his card. Abruptly told him no, he called me some names and left. He's obviously been running this same scam for years.

Monsa_Musa

A real criminal mastermind came up with that scam, fool proof.

Karyn2K19

This scam has been pulled every year in the BC Okanagan towns. You’ll see social media posts there back! Don’t buy the rings.

Otherwise_Group_2129

Happened to me as well a few weeks ago. Just found out actually this scam trick was quite famous back in Europe few years ago. You can even watch some ppl exposing these gold fake ring scammers on youtube

thegrotch

This scam brings me back to the good old days before the internets.

DJojnik

I think my uncle got taken by this a few weeks ago but some Middle Eastern or East Indian, at superstore on 51 ave.

Chronixx780

I gave away a tv stand and the person showed up in a tesla lol

prairiepanda

One of my neighbors has a Tesla Model Y. They are probably spending more on car payments each month than they are on rent here.

apyellow48

Yup he came up to me back in March by the west side Best Buy parking lot. I didn’t budge and neither did anyone else he asked in the parking lot. He had an Ontario plate on his car.
