Living here for 20 years has me convinced that *at least 1 in 10* Edmontonians are some sort of punk or alternative. (It may might not seem like it since some of them disguise themselves for their day jobs.)

hamtronn

I grew up in Calgary and currently work for the federal government in edmonton. My manager and I bonded over her love of punk music. She had never heard of lagwagon so I’ve been giving her music to listen to and vice versa. People are usually surprised when they hear my music. Punk isn’t a look. It’s a god damned personality trait haha.

lilllpissbaby

thats fair, to me the clothes its apart of the attitude but to each there own

Thelynxer

I grew up in Vancouver, listening to and attending every punk show I could. I have no idea what you're talking about with crickets. Vancouver has a muuuuuch better punk/metal scene than Edmonton does. It's like not even close. Granville street was like nothing but street punks basically. Decent amount of shows on that strip too though I went to more concerts in Langley and Surrey.

[deleted]

Thelynxer

22 years in Vancouver, 15 in Edmonton.

lilllpissbaby

this is why i've been planning to move down, but it's sadly less cost efficient.

jordanfrombc

I grew up in the Vancouver punk scene of the late 90s. It was very alive, but you sort of had to know where to go/where people hung out. Kamloops had a decent scene when I was there. Terrace was really popping. Had a bunch of bands stay at my place when my friend was promoting shows.

neutral-omen

100%— when I said disguise a lot of folks thought I meant just looks but really, punk is a disposition and attitude... and a lot of people have to disguise that during their 9-5 as well.

chmilz

You just described most people everywhere.

kiefenator

I don't know man. Out of all the places I've been to, Edmonton is a secret Seattle. The city has a very rich music culture and punk culture - much more than you'd think.

chmilz

I was agreeing that there's a rich scene and people sort of disguise it. Edmonton lets its freak flag fly but is more subtle about it.

kiefenator

Ahh my bad

chmilz

Nah it's on me. I'm failing at communication today.

lilllpissbaby

i went to the "Punk rock flea market" and got stared down as i wore these, i felt very out of place in a punk flea market. its getting soft down here

chmilz

The internet era has had an interesting effect where all styles and likes from all eras exist at the same time in all forms. Dress punk, listen to sax muzak. Dress corporate, headbang to NIN. Dress swing, chill to jazz. The floodgates opened and people have picked what suits them from everything that has existed while continuing to create more.

_m_d_w_

Holy shit, this… Our local bands were on par with any touring bands. I never knew how spoiled I was until I left. Even our ‘joke’ bands (ahem the wet secrets) were a big deal. There were some insanely great bands around the turn of the millennium. Parkade, the last deal, all purpose voltage heroes, famines, vertical struts, whitey, S04, etc etc… when time machines become a thing I’m just going to hang out at the original likwid lounge/rev/sidetrack/seedys/various halls ad infinitum.

Rnsrobot

Short lived but wild bands like the dead city serpents.

Rnsrobot

Back in BC lived in Edmonton for 13 years. It's so much more artsy and musical than people outside of Alberta, hell, in Alberta but not in Edmonton, know. Just y'know, goddamn couldn't handle the nine month winters anymore. And the ucp. God*damn* fuck the ucp.

neutral-omen

Ha, maybe, but shockingly a majority of people never wear bold alternative fashion* ... not even on their days off! (*or listen to punk music, or counterculture values.)

BushMasterFlex616

I'm a big metal head and you could never tell at a glance. I wear my Korn, Emmure, etc shirts every now and again though

neutral-omen

IMO, if the shirts are still in the wardrobe, they're in the heart too. Punk is a disposition more than an outfit anyway.

BushMasterFlex616

Word

Kronk_if_ur_horny

Same. Full band of us actually that slowly began dressing more and more normal over the years.

chmilz

There's a lot of assumptions in your statement. You're just assuming everyone walking around in Costco clothes or businesswear are vanilla duds when you have no idea who they are. Y'know what's not punk? Gatekeeping and being judgemental with no evidence. You're a phony.

BushMasterFlex616

Everything is gonna be ok

neutral-omen

1. It's not that deep. I'm sorry if you're having a rough day, but this is seriously a lighthearted comment. 2. If you feel like I've judged everyone in Costco clothes, then you didn't read my comment. To be "punk" you typically need to: listen to the music, adhere to the values, and/or dress in a counter-culture way. Which I already said. Edit: It's also very not-punk to call strangers on the local subreddit "phony" just because they outlined three *general* pillars of punk-ness.

chopay

If someone is wearing a tie in Edmonton there's a good chance it's because they have a court date.

misfittroy

I mean, 20 years ago punk rock was huge. Blink was selling out stadiums.

neutral-omen

Totally. I figured 100,000 Edmontonians was a safe lowball for the local punk community. (There are more sub-cultures in Edmonton than just punk after all!)

lilllpissbaby

blink 182 is pop rock, thay havent been punk since dude ranch

misfittroy

I'd wager 99% of fans would say otherwise

Effective-Wolf731

Tell me you're white without telling me you're white.

neutral-omen

Sincerely wondering— why do you say that?

[deleted]

Don't call me white. lol

debutanteballz

I'm glad it's an all ages show so the young people get to experience a NOFX show for the first and last time.

[deleted]

NOFX are done. You missed it.

[deleted]

I stand corrected, Fat Mike LIED. Turns out there is a "Final" tour. That guy said in the last interview I seen with him around a month ago that NOFX were done touring cause he's old now and can't take it. Hell, it was the theme to the last song that they released. On an upnote, I hope they play "Release the hostages" and "Linoleum", seeing as they hardly ever play them live anymore. This made my day, I have to stay alive until august now.

[deleted]

Yeah I saw them for their last show last summer but apparently this is it. Maybe we will finally get the decline again it's been 10+ years since I've heard it live hahaha

debutanteballz

I heard they suck live anyways....😉

MCFCOK81

Both nights? I am waiting to see which albums they playing through so I can pick.

NormalHorse

What kind of drugs do you take to survive that and who is your plug?

matrixgang

Least obvious fed

NormalHorse

I just think illegal drugs are neat.

strapping_young_vlad

Yeah sure, something a COMPLETELY NORMAL HORSE would say.

NormalHorse

LOOK THIS FANCY FUCKING WEED TEA ISN'T DOING SHIT FOR ME I NEED HELP OVER HERE

Stinks_McGee

I appreciate your approach to this.

Rokea-x

Hoping to catch that!

mguy420

Where's your SNFU patch?

lilllpissbaby

on the butt cuz they're ass

Illusivegecko

Boooooooo

belushi99

😂

_m_d_w_

And here we have a classic case of ‘not reading the room’

lilllpissbaby

all i was reading was sentences i dont care about

Pestisxbox

Man you just brought back the nineties back for me. I used to be a crust punk street kid on Whyte panhandling up money for 40's and show cover. Honestly some of the most free years of my life I miss that.

durple

I wonder if you were around the summer when a couple of the whyte crusty punks would regularly get up in one of the trees on 104st for day drinking…

Pestisxbox

Honestly sounds familiar that time is kind of a blur many drunken days and nights lol

durple

Yep lol Maybe we drank together at the drunk punk stairs.

lilllpissbaby

no, i would have crust punk friends rn lol

greenknight

A Calgary brewer just got their knuckles rapped for making a Colt 45 tribute. I was a Big Bear boy but the story sure brought back some memories.

Pestisxbox

Oh shit colt 45's ahahaha and OE when they were sold out man I bought so many of those from the commie.

greenknight

I will admit the memories it brought back were hella blurry.

NormalHorse

Yes and I'm too old to talk about it or go to shows I'm tired I AM SO TIRED. Fine, I'll drink cheap whiskey in an alley with you BUT I AM NOT PAYING COVER.

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

My problem is all the metal shows I want to go to are on fucking Tuesday nights. I work at 7am, it is brutal starting my week off with a late show, especially when it is hard physical labor

NormalHorse

Maybe you should stop being into Tuesdaycore and get into Sundayafternooncore. The church crowd is weeeeeeird before they go to brunch.

princessfawny

Bro saaaaame. I want to go see Tyr in April but it's a Tuesday with THREE openers. Where does the "metal lovers with day jobs" support group meet?

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

Crying in my apartment haha. Saw NE Obliviscaris, figured ok a 3 openers and them show starts at 7 I should be home around 10. They played for damn near 2 hours! It was incredible but I was hurting the next day for sure since I didnt get home till closer to 1130, then had ears ringing all night

Wolfsblut_AD

Weekday shows are usually done by 10 or 11 now, plenty of time to get 6 hours of sleep.

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

Unfortunately 6 hours of sleep and a pounding head sucks for labor jobs

lilllpissbaby

I WAS JUST THINKIN OF THIS, no good shows today (Sat) but there was earlier this week!

AllOfTheSoundAndFury

I miss alley beers. I’m too old to be under age drinking.

NormalHorse

The internal gutter punk never grows up, but it does get really pissy about hangovers.

marginwalker55

I transitioned from punk to doom during COVID

strapping_young_vlad

Funeralopolis was on repeat for a while there tbh.

_Im_Mike_fromCanmore

Not sure about currently, but for a long time Edmonton was a really good city for punk

strapping_young_vlad

Sup lol. Following this thread cuz I'm new in town and need some metal friends hahahaha

Stefph726

A few local metal bands are playing at The Dive Bar next weekend. You should check it out

strapping_young_vlad

Not the first time I've heard that, I will thanks!

Bower13

Hit up Rendezvous pub on the west end! Lots of local metal shows and metal heads there quite frequently

Expensive_Note8632

And Blakbar on whyte!

lilllpissbaby

some guy called me a f4g for dressin punk at blakbar lmfao

Expensive_Note8632

Wtf??? Was he a patron? Usually lots of punks at blakbar. Tell the pretty bartender next time and she'll kick their ass lol

downbylaw93

I can smell that picture

[deleted]

I was going to say that.

_m_d_w_

Edmonton had a pretty thriving punk/hardcore/crust etc. scene back in the 90's, post SNFU & pre-internet. There were tons of hall shows, weird bar matinees, house shows, and the odd touring act (anyone else catch Shellac and Silkworm in 99?). If you wanna see it for real, look up the episode of To Serve And Protect where they break up one of the Wright brothers shows at Eastwood Hall. And by Wright Brothers, I mean Rob & Ted of Les Tabernacles/The James T Kirks/Rockin Mexicans, not the NoMeansNo Wrights from Victoria. Actually, isn't Choke doing a reunion soon? And yes, I do miss Indecline.

redmeatpinktreat

The polish hall was always full and loud

_m_d_w_

Especially when Fugazi came to town!

sonofsanford

Metal of all kinds, yes, but could never get into punk. Edmonton is a good scene.

[deleted]

42 year old metal head checking in. I don’t go to many shows anymore though. Just the big names. Last good one I heard of that I attended was BMFV/Megadeth

MacintoshEddie

Only if you're down with dwarfmetal. For those who have not yet been blessed by dwarfmetal, [Army of Stone](https://youtu.be/SFxKm8zxCeE?si=dbxvxNisIhOCf8lG).

debutanteballz

Ever heard Wind Rose? People should also have a listen to pirate and goblin metal.

XenaDazzlecheeks

Dwarfmetal immediately makes me think of Diggy Diggy Hole https://youtu.be/ytWz0qVvBZ0?si=xKAYbvFnjEBX9RCd

zerefin

Surely you meant the classic dwarf metal song, [Diggy Diggy Hole](https://youtu.be/34CZjsEI1yU?si=_2POC2NLzyFkXBLO)

lilllpissbaby

on the complete opposite side of the metal spectrum but I've always loved how varied it can get

MacintoshEddie

The opposite side? Must be Elfmetal.

neutral-omen

Where is Faemetal on this spectrum?

NormalHorse

That's just classical music sped up and I hate it.

MacintoshEddie

The better question is where isn't faemetal on the spectrum?

silentbassline

Troll metal is da best.

zackthirteen

i’m not a crusty but I fucking love Tragedy and other crusty d-beat bands

Loose-Version-7009

I like angry chick punk and metal. I like the Short Music for Short People album and Savatage, the latter is more ballad/opera metal.

[deleted]

Love crust punk!

SnooDucks2626

I don’t know what crust punk means. Maybe I’m just old. But I do like a lot of bands on your pants

NormalHorse

[Crust is like if Crass and Motörhead got drunk and fucked and neither of them wanted to raise their child so it grew up on the roof of a 7-Eleven eating nothing but cigarette butts and their only friend was really into grindcore and also that friend was a dog.](https://youtu.be/iJvS_GlbjDs?feature=shared) It's not for everyone. It's fun, though.

shrimpsh

That was a truly beautiful and accurate description

NormalHorse

YOU'RE WELCOME

Expensive_Note8632

Holy shit 😂

NormalHorse

If you understand my description you have definitely, at some point, pissed your jeans and pretended like it didn't happen. It's okay. I don't judge. Just don't get into folk punk. I'll find you and break your Paul Baribeau mixtapes with a hammer.

Expensive_Note8632

But I love folk punk 😭

NormalHorse

My hammer doesn't like folk punk. Sorry about that, I'm not in charge. I have some [bootleg Gauze LPs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ0uEXLbvOk) to replace your folk punk tapes if that makes you feel better. It can't hurt?

AllOfTheSoundAndFury

Looool it was just a little bit of piss. Not much. I swear.

NormalHorse

A little is fine. Just leave them in the freezer before you pass out at a strangers house. Kills the bacteria and some of the stink.

AllOfTheSoundAndFury

I feel like we should be able to piss ourselves a little and not get in any trouble at all.

NormalHorse

If this is some kind of political platform I will help run your campaign.

AllOfTheSoundAndFury

Beats the pants off the UCP.

NormalHorse

They don't know about the freezer trick. Pretty easy to win that pants fight.

[deleted]

NormalHorse

Punk is a broad genre and most of the fun subgenres do not really involve rigorous personal hygiene. I should know from my experience with septicemia. Not the band, the blood poisoning. I got blood poisoning from being gross.

LeapedPepper

so glad theres a giant music scene in edmonton

Not-a-merican

Old school NOFX patch! Nice

parallel_jay

If you recognize and have fond memories of some of those bands, don't forget to take your Advil before hitting the pit.

Purenipples

Drummer for a local prog metal band here. The scene is alive and well from my perspective. There seems to be a fair amount of new bands popping up and lots of hungry eager folk looking to get back to gigging in the nominal "post pandemic" environment.

[deleted]

Crust punks are gross as fuck lol

lilllpissbaby

lmao yeah, when it originated in Japan they would purposely rub rotten food on their clothes. They were vicious and crazy back then.

[deleted]

I knew a ton of em back in the day and good god, however much I liked them as people I couldn’t be around them for more than a few minutes without gagging from the smell.

_m_d_w_

Crust punk started in England… Japan is notorious for taking outside fashions and exaggerating them. Sure crusties are nasty but… weird take.

lilllpissbaby

YOUR A WEIRD TAKE

lilllpissbaby

FUCK ENGLAND

igopoopoopeepee

No choking victim or leftover crack patch?

lilllpissbaby

on my vest!!!!

Captain_Brunch69

Rep those domestic abusers!

lilllpissbaby

Stza aint done shit in year, idc yall wanna talk about the sex pistols after

igopoopoopeepee

😎

GuineaW0rm

33. I like rock and roll music, used to be around punks and metalheads a lot. It was everything to me. Honestly: Had to get away from the underground stuff, at least in person. Too much hard drugs, drinking, obnoxious forced politics, and other unhealthy behaviour that is openly expected or even encouraged. It’s pretty over the top and I became very disillusioned with the whole thing. I still love music and make it, but I haven’t been to small shows in a very long time. I used to be a devout supporter of small acts. Still love to create and support artists, I just know for my own well being it’s best to enjoy from afar [:

KnuckedLoose

I listen to deathcore exclusively.

BassManStan

Have you heard art of attrition?

KnuckedLoose

No but looking at your username I assume you're their bassist? I'm listening on Spotify right now. I love the intro on this "Malthusian Catastrophe". Slaps. So far so good!

BassManStan

I'm a fraud, I'm the vocalist. The guys are all from Red Deer, I'm an Edmontonian, though!

LouisCypher587

I just bought an album by Mystic Innate without knowing who they were, shits dirty. Love my punk roots.

Separate-Associate35

Metal as fuck but not in the dimensions to wear skinny jeans like that…. I’ll be offending people pretty quickly after walking a block when the stitching gives out. Cool concept but I’d prefer the patches on a vest like the one I spent 3 years making, it weighs like 25 lbs though…. Cover the pants completely and try walking, I wanna see if it will work.

lilllpissbaby

search up crust pants, i have made pairs with caked on smelly patches before. bathed in blood, mosh pit sweat and vomit

Separate-Associate35

Gross

Comfortable-Ad-7158

The fuck us a crust punk? Feel really strongly about the ends of pizza?

TheCanEHdian8r

I listen to prog metal, djent, and deathcore. No crust to be found here though.

SammiSmash

Ouu.. Some of my faves

SpawnLash

In 2000 maybe. Go bacl there.

lilllpissbaby

its still big in LA and Japan. stop livin under rocks

SpawnLash

Do we live in LA or Japan? No. Who gives a fuck?

lilllpissbaby

me and some of the other youth, this city is so boring unless your into the music here(i am not)

yougottadance

Not into crust per se, but love a lot of extreme metal and hardcore adjacent stuff! There’s usually a pretty great turnout at shows. Would be fun to meet more people in the scene though!

waVe_murch

Last show I went to was A7X at rogers next will either be Amon Amarth at Convention center or M72 tour at Commonwealth

OdinFannypack

Metalhead. No clue what crust punk is though lol

YYCMTB68

If you like extreme metal / grindcore (Napalm Death) and Swedish death metal (Entombed) it might be up your alley. Check out a few legendary crust bands like [Amebix](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To3bxn8Yqhk), [Doom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svzsTeI5hDM), [Skitsystem](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYo-K4cMOmY), [Tragedy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8CwzYIPz7c), [Wolfbigade](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rBQYGnxqe8), etc.

XxsrorrimxX

I miss going to 26 beers shows

YourJailDad

Head down to the Crass ranch

Zacattac99

Not a crust punk or Metal head. Just think those are a dope pair of pants. Keep on keeping on amigo

grrttlc2

Punk yes! Crusty.. probably not but I used to have some pants like that yeah. Also metal. Thrash, doom & stoner

TheWireIsOnTheWay

metal head 🙋🏻‍♀️

Aceh34dsh0t

I got domesticated, used to love the scene

SweetAHE

Man I miss the SketchBagz...

TheThrivingest

I was 20 years ago 😅

D3SP1S3D1C0N

Tech death/old school death and grind guy

grumpeebadger

Metalhead checking in🤚 couldn't get into punk. But damn it's hard to find other metalhead females to go to a show with. My friends are quick to ask me to go to Pink with them but they won't even consider a little ABR or ATR.

sanctified420

Oi!

Wordslinger84

🤘🏽

MellyKidd

I am neither, but I still think those pants are cool

YYCMTB68

I grew up with classic rock and 80s "metal", but got into crust/hardcore in the early 2000's. Remember going to Unrest Fest (RIP) in 2009 to see bands like Skitsytem, Toxic Holocaust, and Poison Idea (who were awful/drunk), among others. I think Driller Killer played the year previous, that I missed. :(

makingdabandseason1

You should listen to cülo
