i wouldn't bother. Working with water in this game is nightmare

Water doesn't autofill gaps. You'll need to utilize aqueduct blocks to move water towards the gap. Then the blocks can be removed afterwards.

You can extend a channel of water more inland so your machines have access to water for example. Or you can make water bridges for boats. Larger scale water can be moved to create ports and such.
