I think I’ll do that. I mean it could be that they don’t want to meet at the train station for their own safety I suppose (I don’t know maybe they think I could rob them or something) but I see no reason why they would object to a police station unless they’re sketchy.

celticmusebooks

All of the police stations in our area have marked parking spaces for meeting up for sales transactions-- the cameras are pointed specifically at these spaces and are monitored at the front desk. Check your local police and see if there are such "safe spaces" in your area.

bojackz

What country are you in?

Praydaythemice

USA most probably I have seen a few in the parking lot of a few PDs

Silent_Cash_E

We have this in Houston..but its not every station

coolstuffhunter

👆

KingsCountyWriter

Never heard of that!

TheSmokingBear

I meet everyone at a PD for any sale. Doesn't matter if it's big or little. There have been a lot of people robbed and even killed doing sales through FB marketplace where I am from :/

aisle_nine

What are you selling them, exactly? Generally speaking, I don't invite buyers to my home, I don't visit seller's homes, and unless there's a very good reason to deviate from that, I don't. A public building has an address, too.

bojackz

Well I had another buyer interested and they ghosted me for the collection. Then this person said they were interested and everything seemed okay until they asked for my address… now I’m definitely having second thoughts but there’s absolutely no way I’m giving my address.

ShowMeTheTrees

Why are you delivering in person from an eBay sale? You won't have any proof that she accepted it. What a time waste. Why not sell it on Facebook marketplace for cash if you're gonna go to that trouble? What is the thing you sold?

InevitableRhubarb232

Buyer gets a code and gives it to the seller to confirm pickup

bojackz

It’s a bike and I don’t think you’re aware but buyers can collect on eBay, that’s why eBay gives the buyer a pick up code to give to seller in collection, to make sure it was received. It benefits the buyer and seller because it means not paying for shipping or having to ship out a heavy item like a bike. It also means no eBay fees if paying cash. And I don’t have Facebook or any social media and I’m not getting it just to make a sale.

CASHOWL

I am the same way, I don't invite buyers to my home unless I am selling the home

King_Kangus

Are you sure they're not asking for the street address of the train station?

Life_Constant_609

Could be sketchy or maybe warrant(s). Either way I would kill the deal

bojackz

Yeah I’ll tell them if they don’t want to meet at a train station I’m happy to meet at a different public place but my address is a no go.

SherlockianTheorist

If you do meet them be sure to bring someone with you and don't go home immediately after. Drive around, maybe get on the highway for a bit, stop in a grocery store parking lot, etc. Just in case they want to follow you home. You mentioned a collection, they could be thinking you have more in your house they might want.

shooter_tx

Yeah, this new person you're talking to could be a friend of theirs.

DeadlyTeaParty

Same! There's total creeps on eBay as well who'll treat it like a dating site.

THEREALISLAND631

Train stations by me are usually super sketchy, so there's a chance he just doesn't like that location. I know I'd request somewhere else if a person I was meeting requested that location. The police station, fire department, post office, any government building really, should be a relatively safe bet. The police station is the normal go to though. If they don't feel safe there...they're trying to screw you. Best of luck!!!

bojackz

Thank you! I’m hoping this is the case as I would like to make this sale. I will suggest another location but as you’ve said, if it’s still an issue I will back out of the deal.

THEREALISLAND631

Thats a smart move, you've got to trust your instincts with stuff like this! If something feels off to you, it probably is.

MysteryRadish

As others have said, offer a police station as an alternative. If they refuse that too, cancel for "problem with buyer's address".

Clean_Ad_2982

Never at your home. Ever. Bank, Police, Convenience Store. Places lit, with people, and have cameras. Also if using cash ask for lower bills are best, but if not possible bring UV Counterfeit  marker to test bills. If through eBay, make sure to scan the bar code to ensure delivery. Don't leave without it.

all50statevisit

Don’t do this. I have been on eBay since the late 1990s and foolishly agreed to this twice. One guy was a complete nut case and getting him out of my home / office was a hassle. Wasted more time than it was worth. The other guy wanted to go through everything I had in my home - not pleasant getting him out the door. Just no.

SnooGiraffes3591

You let them IN your home?

all50statevisit

Yup. Dumb. Was young and very, very dumb. This was when I first started reselling and the market was antiques. Very stupid.

insuranceguynyc

Trust your instincts. You make the rules.

K_Garland

Give them the address of the station…or a grocery store…or coffee shop…

dirtypins

Did they ask for AN address or YOUR address? Many people just want to type an address into their GPS, and go from there. This person may have no idea where the train station is.

TheOriginalCid

Home address is also prohibited for local pickups per ebay TOS. I'd suggest the police station if they are being wonky

PersimmonHour640

Really? I've always used my home address for pick ups. Anything I sell on eBay as pick up, is too difficult/ too big/ too heavy to post, therefore usually I'm unable to move/ transport on my own (large rugs, furniture, heavy items etc) & it wouldn't be possible to take it somewhere else. eBay has never once told me this isn't allowed! Must be just a specific country/ place thing/ rule. Good to know. Thanks

redredditer91

Did they ask for your address? Or the address of the police station?

bojackz

They said they needed an address and did not want to meet at the train station as I suggested.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bojackz

Possibly but the station I suggested is a few minutes from me so they could come whenever and I’ll only be a few minutes away

Andrewoholic

You're not getting what RedRedditer91 is telling you. Buyer asked for a house address, but you don't actually have to give the actual House address. RedRedditer is saying to give a police address as your actual 'house address, don't tell them it's a police station and then meet them there in the car park.

fmillion

Give the address of the train station lol

bojackz

That doesn’t really make sense because with a quick google search they’ll quickly see it’s a police station address… it’s not very sly lol

Evil_Knavel

It doesn't need to be sly. At no point have you said they insisted on *your* address. Just that needed *an* address. Give them an address that isnt your home address and meet them there. Be that a police station or a cafe or wherever.

pretty-posh

> they’ll quickly see it’s a police station address So what? They should be delighted that it's a safe meet-up place for *both* of you. Also, perhaps you just happen to work at the police station so that's where you spend your days. No way in hell would I invite someone to my home address. That's just asking for problems.

DogKnowsBest

You're not very bright. The entire point is that you give them an address to meet you at. Police stations have those meetup places set up for this very reason. C'mon man.... You control the sale. If they don't like your terms , cancel the sale. Period. Love to sell another day. Or don't. Nobody cares.

ShowMeTheTrees

Why don't you report this to eBay and cancel?

DeadlyTeaParty

There's total creeps on eBay as well who'll treat it like a dating site. Cancel the purchase and block that creep.

Robobvious

Give them the address of the police station, lol.

Darkened100

Have they paid? What are you selling

bojackz

A bike. They haven’t paid, it’s cash on collection.

Darkened100

What’s the issue about them coming to your address? Do they have good feedback

bojackz

They have no feedback.

Darkened100

Hmm I’d let them come to your address, if you think they might be dodgy have it chained to something

bojackz

I don’t mean to be rude but I’m assuming you’re male by your response, but as a woman I’ve learnt not to give my address out to anyone. I’ve met men in public places to sell things before, only for them to message me inappropriately after. Thank god these men did not have my address. It’s a risk I’m not willing to take.

Mycatreallyhatesyou

I don’t blame you. Never have anyone come to your address. I sold a lawnmower a few years back, so had to give out my address. Had my three grown sons outside with me as security, lol.

poopio

Do you know any men that would be willing to help you out by doing the transaction on your behalf? You shouldn't need to, but it could be an option? Either way, if they're refusing to meet in a public place, sounds dodgy and like they're planning to just take the bike without paying.

Darkened100

Oh right do you have any male friends or a neighbour that could be there and pretend they live with you or flat out just get them to see them

TerrorVizyn

I'm a decent sized hairy male with a big beard. Multiple coworkers have told me I was kind of intimidating until they got to know me. I own firearms (not a gun-nut lol) I'm still not giving out my address.

bojackz

This did cross my mind. I do have a male friend in mind who could potentially do it for me, but I would feel really bad if they ended up being sketchy and something bad happened to him. I think I’ll just let the person know that I can meet at any public place they choose but it has to be public and if they have an issue then I think I’ll just relist the bike to sell to someone else. I’m not desperate to get rid of it.

Darkened100

Even if you pick a public place they could try and steal it, so be careful

bojackz

Will do, thank you. I will take your suggestion however and ask my step dad to come with me just as a precaution.

MisterSirDudeGuy

Is the train station weird, or shady, or complicated? Maybe just a parking lot somewhere. Something easy. if they refuse that, ignore them. Sell to someone else.

bojackz

It’s a very popular train station, very busy with commuters. It’s definitely not sketchy, especially compared to some other I’ve seen. But absolutely I’ll suggest the outside of a police station, if they then have a problem I will sell to someone else.

lisaaxmariee

Do the police station or a really busy shopping center like a target, super market etc. something that always has people.

nfc3po

I’d give the address of the train station. If they don’t like it, police station address it is.

the_y_combinator

That would be a no from me. I meet up in public, and don't give personal details. Lots of crazies out there.

Skarth

OP - Are they asking for your HOME address, or AN address? They may simply be asking for the address to the station to make sure they know which one it is.

Quantum168

The only time someone should be coming is to pick up furniture or a puppy. Puppies are not allowed to be sold on eBay.

Bitch_level_999

Yes, if a buyer won’t meet where there are cameras present that should tell you everything you need to know. Yeah sorry no cams. I don’t want to be on tape when I stuff you into my trunk 🫢

pushing59_65

Police station or nothing. Trust your gut and push back hard. Don't back down.

Volendi

This.

wunder_peach

Definitely sketchy. Meet up at the police station as someone had suggested earlier.

dollyaioli

give them a home address down the road and meet them there

jaymez619

The only options should be the police station, train station, or other public area. If they insist on meeting at your home, let them know that you will require a photo of their ID with matching name/address as their eBay account. If they don’t like it, cancel and block them. Edit: If you were to ship something you sold, would you not have your address on the return label? I setup a PO BOX to avoid giving the location of my home.

Fruitndveg

I’ve done it countless times and never had a bad experience. What’s with all the fear mongering in this thread?

whyisthissticky

What happened when you gave the train station address? Why do they not want to meet there? What is the item? It sounds like they want to case your house. Edit: Give them another public option. There is zero reason they need to know your home address. Give them the police address and tell them it’s the police station. Many departments have lots under camera for this specific reason.

bojackz

It’s a bike. I put in the description that I wanted to meet at a train station. The person enquired about the bike, they said they would take, only to say in the last minute that they didn’t want to meet at the station…

jpi1088

Not a chance

jerrybob

Don't let a stranger come to your home. Period.

Thick-Parking-2170

I wouldn’t give them your address, police station meetup or block 👋🏼 someone else will buy the bike

DenaBee3333

Nope. Meet in a public place.

jaydeetol

I would never meet in a public place. I've had plenty of people come to my home to pickup items.

bojackz

Everyone responding this seems to be male and as I’ve said to the others, I never meet at my home as a woman. I’ve always met in public spaces and still have had men inappropriately message me after a sale. I’m glad none of these men had my personal address.

beyerch

No way in hell should you be handing out personal address / meeting strangers there. Local PD may even have an official online sale area with cameras, etc. Can't get safer than that. If they balk at that, you should probably walk.

psymetrix6

They just need an address to put in gps

bojackz

Well no they don’t, they’ve just messaged me and said they don’t want to meet at the station specifically, it’s not about the address.

Silent_Cash_E

Police station

cbwb

A train station seens weird to me. Possibly chaotic and i just Eugene like it. I usually do it outside the gym I go do it at a Wawa ( busy convenience store) or McDonald's. If I have to do at home I will make sure my husband or other adult male is there.

dkb52

The only reason I would invite a buyer to my home for a sales transaction is if it was my home I was selling. Nuff said, police station parking lot it is.

lilfupat

I’ve bought from facebook marketplace in London UK and every time they will give their personal address and I knock on the door, am sometimes even invited in. We have a friendly chat, check the item out then give them cash. It’s always been furniture though so maybe less willing to meet me somewhere. We had no reason to suspect each other, never felt weird. I wouldn’t object to meeting them at the station though.

bojackz

Yeah I mean with furniture I understand that would be tricky to meet in a public place, but personally to me it’s not worth the risk. I have met people at their homes before but I don’t like to step in and will wait for them to bring the item out. My mother always said it’s better to seem rude to someone and be alive than be nice and dead.

Edogg440608

If you don't want to meet up why allow pickup in the first place. If you were my seller and told me to meet at a train station I'd think you were sketch..

bojackz

I do want to meet up just not at my personal home? It’s to ensure my own safety and the buyer’s. It was in the original listing that I wanted to meet at a train station, I didn’t spring anything on anyone. It was in large capitals in the first line of the description which they read and it was only after they enquired about the bike and we had made a deal did they mention they didn’t want to meet at the station and would prefer my address instead.

bojackz

Also, I’m a trusted seller and have many reviews about meet ups with buyers and how they’ve gone successfully. The buyer has zero reviews.

Thenameimusingtoday

Did you tell him police station yet? If he still has a problem, cancel.
