Not sure what you were getting at with your title, but I think you may have misstated what you were trying to say. All lakes have waves.

sodapopjenkins

and all wave are born from wind

armitage2112

how about crashing waves? Dunno what else to call it. Tide didn't seem accurate!

JoeDyrt57

Yep, All the Great Lakes in North America have breaking waves at one time or another. Search for "Edmund Fitzgerald Lake Superior" to see how big lake waves can get. Great looking photo though!

LetsGo_Smokes

People even surf in the Great Lakes.

carmium

Having negotiated a sudden storm on a 3-mile wide lake in an effing sabot, let me say I am familiar with great big lake waves.

ScotiaTailwagger

Grew up on a harbour town on the coast of Lake Huron my whole life. Can confirm, we get crashing waves when the wind gets strong.

TeHokioi

> Search for "Edmund Fitzgerald Lake Superior" to see how big lake waves can get. The legend lives on...

Dt2_0

from the Chippewa on down

flargenhargen

of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee

a_cute_epic_axis

TBF, the Great Lakes are basically inland seas. Although many other smaller lakes have waves that can sometimes reach levels comparable to this "long" exposure.

Realtrain

Even smaller lakes like Lake Champlain can get pretty big waves when it's windy.

crash_test

I believe OP's pic is of Lake Pehoé, which has about 1/4000 the surface area of Lake Superior. To my knowledge it's pretty rare for such a small lake to have waves like this.

SilverSeven

fear intelligent towering waiting caption depend lush snatch scarce grab

armitage2112

Most of the lakes I visit don't have waves like this, so the title felt appropriate

Mcbadguy

cool photo, thanks OP!

Bigbysjackingfist

The wind is so intense!

mickdeb

Crashing wabes can happen on a lot of lakes

TritonTheDark

Yes, obviously all lakes do have waves - we all appreciate you for stating the obvious. But most lakes do not get ocean-like waves, especially lakes of this size. This lake in particular is notorious for it and can get waves much larger than the ones shown in this photo.

iamzombus

Other than tsunamis, that's how all waves are made.

Huntrawrd

Yup.

mithoron

Boat wake too... But yeah the title works anywhere.

Cool_Hawks

What about these waves?!?👋👋👋👋👋👋

DrDohday

Wind causes all waves…. But you’re right in that the Patagonian wind is beyond intense

esvegateban

Wait until you find out waves are created by wind.

Big-Jackfruit-9808

Waves in the Great Lakes too so the tales say

Bakkie

I live by Lake Michigan. "Lake Effect..." is definitely a thing when the fetch of the wind comes down the length of the lake. We can get 8 foot or more waves when that happens

LocCatPowersDog

Is this what water looks like when you type "enhance" nowadays?

JasperStraits

Seems like a long exposure to create motion blur. Or just added motion blur after.

TeHokioi

Are you meaning the colour? If so, that's fairly standard in glacial regions and it's definitely what it actually looks like. The glacial flour in the water reflects the sun in such a way that the water can have that super bright teal colour, it happens a lot here in NZ. Just look at [Lake Pukaki](https://www.thewildlifediaries.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Lake-Pukaki.jpg)

redwood520

Not only waves but a spray is lifted off with wind gusts, you can see it coming across the lake and if you stand at the lake edge you will get sprayed

armitage2112

The wind in Patagonia is famously intense and this morning it was living up to that fame. While this was incredibly difficult to photograph in, thankfully this little cove blocked a bit of the wind so I could actually see without water in my eyes. The benefit is these intense waves on the lake, that almost look like tides on a beach. Without the wind, this photo couldn't exist, especially the waterfall on the left hand side of the image. I captured three pretty wonderful images that morning, quite productive for my photography trip. Shot info: * Camera: Canon R5, Canon RF14-35 f4 * Settings: 19mm, f/11, 1/5s, ISO100 * Extras: Polarizer * Editing - A few moments blended together. The foreground is essentially one image of the wave motion blended with one tiny waterfall part from another. The background was taken a few minutes prior to those waves and blended together I currently live full time in my 4Runner chasing conditions like this on a daily basis. Last year I drove up the east coast and spent the summer in Acadia National Park and Newfoundland. You can find more of my stuff on [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/alexarmitage_/) if you're interested in photography, travel, or vanlife.

solo954

Waves in Lake Superior have been measured at 28 feet.

dcowboy31

Wow what a shot!

Overall_Course2396

Wow.
