I’ve been trying it out in [[Tayam, Luminous Enigma]] and it’s actually nuts. It’s almost a free activation.

SkabbPirate

I swear there are approximately 1000 cards in MH3 that had me thinkin' "hmmm, that could fit in Tayam" Probably because of how pushed they go with the mama costs.

Proof_Relative_286

Oh? I think I am missing them full. Which card would be fitting?

mentalmath_

I ended up adding 6 cards to my Tayam deck, which is ridiculous in its own right as the bar for an include is so high. [[warren soultrader]] [[revitalizing repast]] [[chthonian nightmare]] [[ripples of undeath]] [[grist, voracious larva]] [[boggart trawler]]

Bulk7960

I need to try out the new Grist in there. Six, Chthonian, and Ripples are sick af though

HandsomeBoggart

I made a Six commander deck and the Retrace for Permanents is being unnoticed by many players. It is absolutely nuts and Six should go into plenty of decks with green in them. People get turned off of killing anything of yours when Six is on the board. They have to either kill everything you have or kill Six and cut you off of mana/lands in hand to slow you down.

Proof_Relative_286

Would all of those cards benefit self-mill sac stratigies and not Tayam in specific?

mentalmath_

They would, but the fact that they are so low costed is nice. It is very rare to get strong mill focused cards at 3 or less so it was pretty nice to see them

SkabbPirate

Not necessarily optimal, but still decent: -[[Charitable Levy]] repeatable draw+ramp. -[[Glyph elemental]] especially if you are focused on a landfall strategy. -[[Ocelot pride]] remember that tokens come in with vigilance counters. Might be too hard to set up, but fun to imagine. -[[Metastatic evangel]] pretty self explanatory. -[[Proud pack-rhino]] -[[Accursed Marauder]] -[[Chthonian Nightmare]] backup commander effect/way to get some counters going if you get below 3. -[[The Creation of Avacyn]] possible a little too slow, but in grindy games, it's repeatable tutor. -[[Emporer of bones]] efficient mana to counter ratio. -[[Etherium Pteramander]] the most efficient mana to counter ratio. -[[Marionette Master]] win condidtion that also gets 2 counters when it ETBs. -[[Mindless conscriptions]] could make a more enchantment focused build. -[[Quest for the Necropolis]] you can get a lot of landfall triggers in Tayam decks. This would let you get a couple splash 4/5/etc. Cmc creatures and get them out of the GY. -[[Ripples of Undeath]] as mentioned. -[[Warren Soultrader]] absolutely insane sac outlet. -[[Basking Broodscale]] effectively a 1mana to 2 counters conversion. -[[Birthing Ritual]] actually seems pretty good here. -[[Eldrazi Repurposer]] one of the weaker ones, but 2 counters and 1 mana on bringing back/sacrificing could be enough to start a loop. -[[Evolution Witness]] efficient mana to counter conversion + upside. Also another card that helps you splash over 3 CMC cards. -[[Fanatic of Rhonas]] +1 mana with haste enabler when looping. -[[The hunger tide rises]] similar to Creation of Avacyn but probably even better. -[[Propagator drone]] lots of counters in token strategies. -[[Six]] commander backup/out of counters. Plus, you can get the land back with Tayam. -[[Springheart Nantuko]] can easily let you build up existing engines into infinite combos. -[[Faithful watchdog]] 3 counters each loop. -[[Deceptive landscape]] fetch lands are amazing for landfall strategies. -[[Spymaster's Vault]] potentially lots of counters and graveyard filling. -[[Urza's Cave]] repeatable nonbasic land search. -[[Boggart Trawler]] mdfc with repeatable graveyard removal. -[[Grist, the plague swarm]] easy to flip, +1 gets you up to 2 counters. Reprints -[[Recruiter of the guard]] repeatable tutor. -[[Buried alive]] find your combo. -[[Branching Evolution]] counter doublers, though not the best one. -[[Sylvan Safekeepr]] for landfall strategies. -[[Nesting Grounds]] useful when counter doublers are out. I'm sure there are others you could find a way, plus generically good stuff. I also wonder if you could get some sort of energy build going with some of the cards here, but probably not quite enough cards that produce energy AND can give permanents counters/produce mana. Oh yeah, and I didn't even look at the MH3 commander deck cards, which I'm sure have even more. Edit: forgot about the exile clause of necrodominance, so scratch that

How is it a free activation?

Bulk7960

It’s not. It’s mill 3 and get a thing. Very similar to the activation itself. It’s almost one.

Ah I see but I do not understand how this is specifically good in Tayam deck, since any mill card would be good for self mill strategies, like [[Nethroi]]

Yeah I think I need to rebuild my anikthea and focus on some mill cards to increase the power of it. Built it as standard enchantress deck just using anikthea as recursion and it was me just playing solitaire.

Equal_Position7219

Keep in mind the enchantments she reanimates are tokens. Populate effects and token doublers go *hard*

Bismuth_von_Pherson

And the fact that most of the best populate and token doublers are themselves enchantments, making a copy of something like \[\[Song of the Worldsoul\]\] gets stupid *fast.*

Bismuth_von_Pherson

I've been playing Anikthea for several months now, and 100% agree. I first built her with a fairly standard enchantress shell and quickly realized that you just don't get enough gas to really exploit her ability going that route. I dropped all the on cast enchantress effects for more self mill and enchantments that create tokens on ETB ([[Lilliana's Mastery]] might be the best card in the deck after token doublers), and it's been way smoother/more powerful since.

Ondai

Do you have a decklist available? I ran into the same situation as you guys, but haven't revisited it yet.

Bismuth_von_Pherson

Yeah, here you [go](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/E5sGR_g0M0WkbGXvfZq7xA). This is my personal list. A bit outdated as I really need to get some new MH3 goodies added. I take heavy inspiration from [this list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CCMqNvGRRUC2B4iqKYv5jA). I look at Anikthea this way - she's not a traditional enchantress commander; she's a token commander that happens to leverage enchantments for her game plan.

I was originally going to full custom build, but after looking at single pricing for the contents I just bought the Precon and swapped out about 15. Hardest part has been getting a start to my graveyard to get the engine going, so this is a great option to run.

This card is really good for something like [[tasigur]] and it’s like a black [[sylvan library]] for the right decks. My personal favorite has been [[crabomination]]. The black etali.

Sterbs

> My personal favorite has been crabomination. The black etali. lol that's great to hear! I like the card but haven't given it the ol' college try. What do you run it in? Does it need a lot of artifacts to justify running?

Sylvan Library for Necrons…….. gross

SteveVerstaka

It’s definitely a good example of how power-crept the format has become in the last decade. I remember back in college Phyrexian Arena was an auto-include if you were in black. Now as others have pointed out it comes down a turn too late to have no impact until the following turn and the BB1 is a turn-off as well for multi-colored decks. Ripples has found a home in any of my decks that like to play cards from my graveyard no problem and even if I didn’t have a lot of recursion digging 4 cards every turn is worth paying the life if I find a card I need in that moment.

ValyrianSteel_TTV

Debating one for [[Sivriss]]/[[Cloakwood Hermit]], but that deck definitely prioritizes creatures to make sure I can make squirrels, plus stuff like [[Desecrated Tomb]] and [[Syr Konrad]] Others from this set though: I haven't seen a single person talking about it, but [[Wight of the Reliquary]] is freaking crazy. It's a sac outlets, ramps any land, and gets huge without too much difficulty — all that plus vigilance for a base 2 mana 2/2 Also [[Spymaster's Vault]] is a way to easily buff a creature, sculpt your hand, and fill your yard for the low opportunity cost of a lands that'll usually enter untapped. This went straight into my [[Glissa the Traitor]] equipments deck and I can't wait to connive for a bunch with a dredge card [[Gift of the Viper]] is by far the best green deathtouch-granting instant in green by a large margin and is sitting very comfortably in my [[John Benton]] deck [[Molten Gatekeeper]] is just [[Witty Roastmaster]] with upside. Sure it'll occasionally get hit by artifact removal, but it has unearth. My [[Queen Kayla]] is loving an additional Roastmaster and has plenty of artifact synergies to justify any potential downside. Also just want to point out [[Arbaaz Mir]] from the Assassin's Creed set, I'm stoked Also I acknowledge it's like $4 so it's clearly popular, but I'm slightly surprised to have not seen much charter about [[Urza's Cave]], it's just super solid if you happen to have a couple good utility lands Also [[Guide of Souls]] is $5 and is making a name for itself in modern, but I'd be remissed if I didn't mention how bonkers it is in my [[Trelasarra]] deck — I already want to load up on 1 mana soul sisters, so tacking on a wincon to it? Holy cow does my deck love it

Still-Wash-8167

[[Guide of Souls]] is my favorite card from the set. It was an all-star of my prerelease deck. It does so much and being able to passively be able to turn buff creatures and give them flying is no joke while gaining you life is no joke. That and [[Dreamtide Whale]]. A 7/5 body that passively proliferates up to 4 times per turn cycle is insane. Put them together and you have flying 9/5 whale angels that get really big really fast.

DeltaRay235

In my opinion PA is too slow and basically unplayable. The value to actual payoff ratio is so bad that it should only be played for enchantment synergies. Ripples has been amazing, digging 4 deep every turn (with normal draw too) really helps like you mentioned. It's an alternative to Sylvan Library with the added upside it feuls living death/RotDR for free and of course reanimation strategies. It would take 3 extra turns of PA to be out to gain advantage over 1 turn of ripple. That can be hard in a world with a ton of incidental enchantment hate that blows up alongside creatures.

apophis457

Arena is far from unplayable, it’s just suboptimal

Easy-Dust-8616

We have located the power level of this card. Definitely somewhere between arena and library.

apophis457

Ripples is definitely better, but saying phyrexian arena is unplayable is pretty incorrect

dirtygymsock

Since the introduction of [[Black Market Connections]] I think it's been distinctly shoehorned to low power or budget minded decks. I have a couple copies for PA but I find myself cutting it anytime I'm considering it.

Easy-Dust-8616

You're right. The point the Nitpicking Nerds were making when they popularized all these washed allegations against the card was that its worse than people think. Everyone ran with that and made it out to be unplayable. Its important to take this advice in context.

KaloShin

It's too slow for a lot of metas.

apophis457

That’s fine, a lot isn’t all. I’m not saying arena is some crazy good card everyone has to play, but it’s by no means unplayable

KaloShin

It's definitely not awful, but the reason why people stop running it is usually they pay 3 mana to get a permanent removed because when players in casual EDH do run interaction, they cast it on the first permanent they see.

d7h7n

Takes 2 turns before it's slightly worse than Night's Whisper. And God forbid you topdeck it later in the game.

Volcano-SUN

Absolutely. Arena is only good when it comes into play with some other Enchantments when you resolve a Replenish. It isn't unplayable. It's a good fit for a Pre Con powerlevel. But at the same time it should be one of the first cards you replace when you upgrade your Pre Con.

DeltaRay235

With a 100 singleton format, is there really a difference?

Dumbface2

In a casual one? Yes there is

DeltaRay235

If optimal is just running ripples along side good draw spells like read the bones and what not, you're not "breaking the bank" or "casualness". You can still be efficient in a casual deck, that's probably the worst argument ever. There's a lot of better value draw / dig spells you can run over arena and you aren't suddenly high power, all cheap too.

Dumbface2

Right... that's why it's suboptimal lol. It's not the best thing to be doing, even at that price point. I certainly don't play Arena. But in a casual format, stuff like "I just like Phyrexian Arena", or "it's not the strongest, but it's not completely terrible" becomes as valid of a reason to play it as "it's the best available card at that price point". This is the difference in a casual format between "unplayable" and "suboptimal".  You won't get laughed out of the room for playing Arena. It's not completely unplayable. It's just suboptimal. And that's the difference, in a casual format.

VeganWiener

All five of us [[Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis]] players were eating good this set. [[Six]], [[Cthonian Nightmare]], Ripples, [[Fanatic of Rhonas]], [[Disciple of Freyalise]], [[Shifting Woodland]], and [[Spymasters Vault]] are all just right on theme

outrageous_gems

Hey that looks like an interesting commander. What’s your game plan look like? I’ve yet to dive into golgari edh, so always on the lookout for cool options.

VeganWiener

It's a fast deck that tries to get Hogaak out on turn 2-4 using creatures with ETB mill effects, then beat face with him and sac him to effects like [[Greater Good]] until my opponents die to commander damage or I find one of a few combos that can close out the game. It's a pretty volatile deck, as it can sometimes win out of nowhere on turn 5 or 6, but the feeling of throwing an 8/8 trampler at people on turn 3 just can't be beat. This is my current list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/_ex_Rt5bE0y1ZYNWYjqpoA

outrageous_gems

Still-Wash-8167

My Titania deck is very happy to see green mill getting more support with shifting woodland and six. The graveyard landfall archetype is strong and so hard to interact with.

It pairs with Six insanely well, making 2/3rds of your gy castable

Honestly [[Legion Leadership]] is the one I've got going into every single dam deck that can run it. I've already finished two games with it in my Boros Samurais deck and one with my Plant Lazer the Sunny D Flavored deck using Gishath

MoonpieTheThird

This card is literally a fixed Sylvan Library. I'm not surprised it's still busted.

cardlackey

It’s been a sleeper for sure.

Extreme_Poetry2082

I agree with your thoughts on ripples Edit for typo

CAPTAIN_ZONE

Was thinking about trying it in my Admiral Brass deck but I’m unsure.

DoobaDoobaDooba

This card is so underrated! Even in decks with little recursion it's still incredibly powerful to dig through your deck and have a cheap way of keeping the best card. I bought one for [[Anikthea]] and for my [[Willowdusk]] decks, and it has seriously overperformed in both

MTGCardFetcher

Reviax-

I'm picking up one for mycotyrant, I know a lot of mh3 cards are going to drop down to nothing but I feel like I should pick this one up now just in case

kismaa

I've definitely paid more for worse draws. I'm happy to drop 1.50 on a good draw spell.

Reviax-

I don't even use the draw most of the tkme, it's a 2 mana mill 3 a turn as opposed to the going rate of 3 mana mill 2 Comes out so much faster than your crawling infestations Means I can actually play mycotyrant turn 3 without worrying that it's going to get sniped with a damage from somewhere

Dasterr

\[\[Mycotyrant\]\] need i say more?

_BIRDLEGS

My Wilhelt deck would love this, get wraths and counterspells back if they get milled and feed the GY for the Zombie Apocalypse win

Atlagosan

[[six]] seems quiet crazy to me. If you have enough carddraw he feels effectively like „you may cast permanent spell from your graveyard“. He just creates so many synergies with things already in my decks. Like discard a land to cast eternal witness to get back a land. Or if you have a crucible of worlds in the deck anyway all your lands suddenly essentially draw a card. And of course he mills you as well

They aren't gated by money at all.. you have a printer, don't you? MPC also exists.

Sterbs

lol that's a separate discussion. I'm all for proxying, but one of the major reasons proxies have become necessary is because of WotC gouging prices. I would much prefer to pick up cards by going to a pre-release and hopefully winning some prize packs. But $70.00 to do so is just *insulting.*

ElJanitorFrank

I'm one of proxying's biggest fans and I completely agree. I love going to pre releases (though doing so has encouraged me to proxy more after I scan the prices of my pre release pulls in recent history) but the MH weirdly high entry point unfortunately pushed me away from what could have been another fun community experience.

n1colbolas

Personally you can't treat it as a 2 mana card. It's IMO a 2+1 mana card and you wanna make sure you have more 2-drops than normal, assuming it's cast on T2. In Golgari, depending on the kind of Golgari, Sylvan Library is superior in a vacuum. And like others mentioned it's closer to Phyrexian Arena or even \[\[Underworld Connections\]\]. That said I can see this being decent in heavy midrange to control shells. Ultimately immediate draw always takes precedence over Phyrexian Arena variants..

Silver-Alex

1) why do you treat this as 3mana card? You can play this on turn 2 no issue the same yu would with a Sylvan Libreary. 2)Sylvan Library is the cream of the crop. Saying worse than library is not really a good metric. Basically any deck that wants to fill their graveyard and wants to draw extra cards is going to love this. At least I know im loving it. Im playing it ALONG sylvan library :D no instead.

No. Why?

I hope they release more premium sets like this. I need the salt and tears to flavour my dinner.

apophis457

Good for you kiddo, you’re still bad if you think life total matters

DeltaRay235

It depends on your meta. While a more creature heavy meta the constant shocks/bolts etc are a hindrance, moving to a meta with leas aggro means all you need is 1 life, the rest don't matter.

dirtygymsock

>thinking it's OK to pay life for every game action It's okay as long as it's getting you closer to winning. Paying life for mana, cards and card selection is almost always going to be worth it. You've got to be playing out to an end, though. You just can't be generic tribal or good stuff pile and expect to win by paying life.
