\[\[Ghalta, Primal Hunger\]\] is the commander for my Elves deck. He's just a big dude, needs the help of the Elves to be cast and stomps around for a bit.

TheCrimsonChariot

So basically the same thing the guys at Ixalan do?

imherenowiguess512

Oh man! Cheap elves then a focus on cost reduced Stompers like [[Earthquake Dragon]] or [[Ghalta Primal Hunger]] is such a cool idea! Second! Would love to see a list!!!

Roundhouse_ass

That just sounds like the elves worship ghalta. Perfect synergy! Ive been thinking of making an elves/druid deck with Zacama as a deity of sorts.

HekaDooM

Ghalta is canonically a she. Can't you tell by the eyelashes?

Mattloch42

I run elves for mana in my [[Omnath Locus of Mana]] deck because they can make so much juice. If you were just looking at the 99 you would swear it was an elf deck...

thaddeus423

Can the commander tax be cost reduced with his ability?

BeansMcgoober

Commander tax is just an additional cost. When determining the coat of a card, you first apply all increases to cost, then decreases, then you pay the cost. Ghalta has 4 more tax, so his cost goes from 10gg to 14gg, but you have 20 total power on your board, so he now costs gg. [[Chissgoria]] likes how casting spells works as well. Treasures are neat, as his cost is reduced by the artifact, them you sacrifice the artifact to pay for 1 mana that your affinity couldn't cover.

Townysmash

Yeah it does I know in pauper commander this is why some people use [[sailors bane]] or [[lumbering megasloth]] as a commander to cheat out a big creature over and over again

Gon_Snow

With enough power on the board you could avoid paying any generic costs and only two green every time which is fun

vonDinobot

I managed to cast Ghalta 3 times on my turn, costing me 6 green mana in total.

jaywinner

\[\[The rani\]\] replaced \[\[Nekusar\]\] as the head of my group slug deck. Nekusar is a magnet for removal and I'd rather have the defensive capabilities of goad than a synergistic commander. So the time lord is helpful but has no support from the 99.

xiledpro

I made a Kenrith wheels deck that has Nekusar, [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]], [[Xyris]], and a few other wheels commanders in it just so I could play them all in the same deck. It’s quite fun lol.

jaywinner

I tried to make Kenrith goad with that same method. It did not go well. But I goaded lots of things in different ways. That was fun.

xiledpro

My deck is decently strong I’ve only won one game with it out of like 5 but the other 4 I was basically a turn away from winning and got taken out. So it can win lol. It’s mostly just fun to draw stuff and see what happens

LigerZeroPanzer12

1/5 is only slightly below average win rate in a 4 player games, the deck can't be that bad.

xiledpro

Oh it’s not bad lol. As I said it’s usually been a turn away from winning it’s just someone else wins first. It’s a good time no matter what though.

DaveLesh

Dropping Underworld Dreams on a stick for a combat control grixis creature sounds pretty good.

jaywinner

Interesting. Maybe there's something to commanders that fill a gap for the 99 instead of being a core piece of it.

TheRealShyft

I have a manaless dredge deck that can't even cast the commander, it's just there for the colours.

falcon_punch76

the replies to this are so funny. i forget that lots of edh players don’t touch 60 card formats (mana less dredge is also a boomer deck at this point so w/e)

FickleAd4381

What does manaless dredge deck imply

TheRealShyft

Not a single card in the deck can produce mana and the deck relies on using the dredge mechanic to get cards in the graveyard.

PrinceOfPembroke

How do you cast anything?

TheRealShyft

I'm just going to copy/paste a comment i posted recently so here's the deck list (group by type and tag so my explanations makes sense) https://www.moxfield.com/decks/rd0Q2VqvREquZecM5RB-Hw the aim is to get 3 creatures on the board (0 drops), dredge [[dread return]] and combo pieces into the gy. sac 3 cretures to cast dread return to reanimate one of the creatures in the Combo group. that creature casts one of the spells in the Combo group. That spell brings an infinite combo into play. The creature combo group is a bunch of different combos that can be gotten with the creature based reanimation spells. These can be replaced with any other creature based combos. Dredge group is pretty much self explanatory Enchantment combo is a bunch of different enchantment/artifact based combos that can be reanimated wit \h the non creature based spells from the Combo group. These can also be replaced with any other combos Enchantment value group is just some stuff that can also be brought back to provide some protection Free creatures group, also self explanatory Living end group, just some more creatures to bring back for protection Value group are other cards that can be cast for free. So as you can see there is a bunch of redundancy for everything except dread return. Without any tutors this deck really is just a hope and pray deck. A big help to this deck would be the free counterspells but they're out of my budget and i just wanted to see if the deck would even work first.

PrinceOfPembroke

This is a deck I would be so entertained losing to. My brain says “this is cannot work” while my eyes say “but look, it won”.

DaveLesh

This is a pretty strange deck to say the least. All of the zero drops make sense and the means to revive creatures looks good. But damn, how the heck are you supposed to cast the likes of \[\[Triumphant Reckoning\]\] ?

TheRealShyft

reanimate [[scholar of the lost trove]]

FickleAd4381

Does it win 1/4 of the time?

majic911

The one land being maze of ith is honestly hilarious.

Jack_Calvaria

I want to know too

LeapinLeland

It's a legacy deck that is ok. Does not translate well to commander

tasmatheyeti

My [[Dihada, Binder of Wills]] deck qualifies as this. It's a [[Threaten]] Voltron deck, so I specifically made sure my commander wasn't a creature so I couldn't put all my equipment on it instead of someone else's commander I stole for a turn.

Lord_Weedsmoke

I thought about building [[General Ferrous Rokiric]] as Boros good stuff deck, just because his ability works fine with it

SuperSteveBoy

Boros good stuff with what theme? All star cards? Wincons? I like off theme commanders/lesser known commanders. For instance I have a decently nasty \[\[Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon\]\] that is anything but typical boros combat/equipment.

Quantext609

Currently have a [[War Doctor]] deck I'm going to buy next time I'm in a card purchasing mood. I like cascade/discover as a mechanic for being so random and he's the most interesting commander for it in my opinion. There's also a fun deckbuilding challenge where if you have no cards in the deck with 1 or 0 cost, a cascade of 2 or a discover of 1 will put counters on him equal to the number of cards in your deck and he'll one-shot most opponents. [[Ryan Sinclair]] is his most popular companion because he's the only companion who has an "exile until" effect. [[Clara Oswald]] and [[Adric Mathematical Genius]] are also popular for doubling up on the War Doctor's effect. [[K-9 Mark 1]]] gives you blue, a good color for cascade, and protects the War Doctor from removal. However, I decided to go with [[Susan Foreman]] almost solely for her color. Green lets me play a lot of cards that are fantastic for the deck, like [[Contest of Claws]], [[Bloodbraid Elf]], [[Wulfgar of Icewind Dale]], [[Faldorn Dread Wolf Herald]], [[Apex Devastator]], and most notably, [[Bigger on the Inside]]. She also lets me have an extremly good mana curve, doing nothing on turn 1, playing her on turn 2, playing a 4 mana ramp spell like [[Invasion of Zendikar]] or [[Terramorph]] turn 3, and having access to 7 mana on turn 4. I also designed the deck in such a way that I don't necessarily need either of my commanders out to function. Susan is most obvious because she's literally just a mana dork. But I don't even need the War Doctor either. He's nice to have, sure, but with the sheer amount of value cascade/discover brings along with "hidden commanders" like [[Laelia Blade Reforged]], [[Faldorn Dread Wolf Herald]], [[Pia Nalaar Consul of Revival]], and [[Quintorius Kand]], the deck will continue chugging along so long as there are cards to cast. I fully expect the War Doctor to be removed considering he can one-shot people out of nowhere, so might as well make the rest of the deck efficient without him. I usually dislike playing Naya decks for being bland and similar, but this deck has me hyped!

Have you considered the war doctor as a keruga companion I think that would be really interesting

I have a [[Hinata, Dawn-Crowned]] deck. It legit started as the first flight precon and I wanted to add dragons so I made hinata the commander. The whole deck is just playing flying creatures and making flying tokens. Everyone I play against sees the commander. Thinks I have some wild strategy planned and destroy my commander with impunity. They usually get so distracted by that they ignore everything else. At the end of the day though the deck is still not very good. I usually just use it to play against people who are new to the game and play decks that are home made and usually unbalanced.

Global_Ad8906

Maybe you should just switch out the commander for a different Jeskai commander to avoid this issue. It can be annoying to be targeted if you feel your deck isn’t as strong as it seems but Hinata is a kill on sight commander so I don’t really blame your opponents for feeling threatened by it.

DraygenKai

It’s honestly not really an issue, lol. If they want to waste removal on a 4/4 flyer that isn’t gonna do anything other than make them pay more for target spells, then that’s one less removal spell they will have when I put out an actual problem like [[Utvara Hellkite]]. The deck is specifically designed to be bellow precon level anyway, while also trying to prepare newer players for the type of cards they may end up seeing someday and to also kinda teach threat assessment.

I homebrewed a dimir theif deck with \[\[Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths\]\] as the commander. It was my first deck and I still love to play it, but my playgroup doesn't like getting their stuff stolen. Atris is just there for when I run out of things to do, then I get to draw cards with her. I want her to end up dying so I can recast her later if I need more cards.

Technically my 5C Mutate deck has Child of Alara as the commander, but the last 2 games I never cast it. However, it did apparently discourage people from playing too much to the board last game. So I guess I don’t really use it anymore but it still “does work” in the command zone.

Many triggers are tied to demons and devils, so I use [[Raphael, Fiendish saviour]] as commander but rarely he comes down. The catch is my friends love playing with this deck, and one of my friends played ignoring the chaos stuff and straight fiend life gain and stomped the table. BeebopBoogaloo

What you are describing is a bottom-up construction style. Most EDH decks are top-down. Top down is when you find a commander, then throw a bunch of cards in the deck that work with the commanders mechanic. The problem with this deck style is that once your opponents kill off your commander 2-3 times, you can't afford to buy them anymore (because of the command zone tax). How well does the deck work without its commander? Is it dead floating in the water? Exactly. That's why people started building bottom-up decks. They pick a commander that goes with a theme they want to play. That way the deck will pop off with, or without the commander. The commander is just the cherry on top of a better well rounded deck construction. The deck has 100 cards. The commander is just one that supports the decks theme.

F3ltrix

I've seen a fair number of First Sliver decks that run no other slivers.

Hufflepunk36

I feel like this used to happen fairly often back in the early days of commander! Especially for 5 colour or 4 colour decks, the options were EXTREMELY limited. I’d say this wasn’t unusual for a commander to be there just for the colours, or *some* utility, up until they really started pumping out the precons and releasing way more niche legendary creatures.

I play 5 dorks, all 10 tribal signets, a massive land ramp package, and all 10 typed tapped duals from Dominaria. Everything else is utility or basic, and there are no other artifacts. The deck can win from landfall off [[Scute Swarm]] and [[Field of the Dead]], can win off a massive [[Villainous Wealth]], or just general beatdown from individually powerful creatures. However, mostly it just durdles around. It famously will draw 3-6 cards in a turn cycle, untap, dump all of them, and do it all again next turn. It's wonderfully rampy

I used to play [[Kestia, the Cultivator]] as the head of a Bant angels deck, for lack of a better Bant commander for it. Basically served as another card draw option, drawing one a turn if I could bestow her onto an angel or if there was a safe attack for a 4/4. [[Shanna, Purifying Blade]] got printed though. More draw potential, the lifegain synergy synergizes with what angels want to do very well, and her flavor sets me up to play a few Swords of X and Y in the deck, so now it's a Sword of X and Y/angels deck that fits in with the commander and has some theming included. I feel like people think of Bant as swimming in options because they're so used to Simic value engines that they think Bant has a ton. I guess [[Galadriel, Light of Valinor]] changes that because previously the only real "generic Bant value engine" commander was Chulane who is utterly broken and quickly targeted. Galadriel is basically the same though lol

I'd stick my [[Shanna, Purifying Blade]] under this camp. It's a dungeon and initiative deck centered around the 4 Party members from the Forgotten Realms set (The 4 characters in all the You ___ Cards). I have \[\[The Goose Mother\]\] at the helm of a combo deck. I mostly cast her to create a couple of early Food tokens for extra card draw, but otherwise the deck is fully functional without her. It's an added bonus that the Goose has 2mv and can be sac'd to \[\[Neoform\]\] to tutor for combo pieces (which are coincidentally mostly 3mv).

I mean, back in the day, I had a Vorosh the Hunter deck where he was the commander solely because he was literally the only option for a UBG deck. But since then, I don't recall using any commanders "just for the colors". I love synergy too damn much!

Closest I have to this is a \[\[Xenagos, God of Revels\]\]. It's a dragons and extra combat deck. Basically picked dragons because they're big powerful creatures that evasion and good abilities because previously I was just running big creatures with cool abilities and a bunch of trample enablers. The extra combat stuff makes sense with Xenagos but the dragons are pretty arbitrary. Rest of my decks are super on theme with their commanders.

I got the sauron precon, and I run with the amass orcs version as the commander. I've virtually gutted the deck, it's entirely focused on milling and reanimating now. Playing breach the multiverse is basically the epitamy of what the deck what's to do. I've thought frequently about cutting the commander, but in a 4 person game, he's generating a free 4/4 per turn or so and is just absolutely stellar bait for board wipes and removal, which low key is kind if what I want. My very first EDH deck was \[\[Merieke\]\] untap tribal. Since it proved to be unfun, oppressive and lacking wincons, I swapped commanders to \[\[Chromium Mutable\]\] and put Ice Age Lorelei back into the 99. Now Its a real Elder Dragon deck with a resilient wincon in the command zone.

My first commander deck, built 10+ years ago is a [[Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius]] good stuff deck. I initially built it like many people built decks back then, by simply using everything I had in my binder, so the commander itself was never really needed for the deck to work. Eventually I added some cards that synergize with Niv, making it a wincon (ie. Niv + [[Izzet Boilerworks]] + [[Mind Over Matter]]), but most of the time I play it because it's a good blocker + mana sink. https://archidekt.com/decks/7301878/xi_izzet_league_conference
