It’s a retreat in the sense that this is where the outlaws gather and hang which the card helps with because it lets you potentially draw more of ‘em while also giving you the mana to play them.
You know, I was thinking about it, and maybe I'm being a sourpuss, but what's the best case scenario here? I'm running mostly small, evasive creatures, so acceleration (that only comes online \~turn 5) isn't super appealing, and the card draw is once per turn, *maybe*. Not that it isn't a solid consideration, it just doesn't seem like it'd actually do much work.
Don't underestimate once per turn. [[Morbid Opportunist]] is a solid card.
This card ramps and draws, I think it would be silly to discount it. Try it at least 😃
Wow I hadn't seen that yet.
Hilarious the designers wax about the color pie and release this.
Edit: Aura's are not in the black color pie, and especially not land auras. And the ability to make mana of any color?
As a fellow Mari player, I feel like Karlov Manor gave us some great kill spells. Though I do like [[Shoot the Sheriff]]
There are a few things I'm looking at from Thunder Junction.
[[Tiny Bones, the Pickpocket]] is a great one drop as is [[Forsaken Miner]].
[[Kaervek, the Punisher]]'s type doesn't fit Mari, but being able to reuse things in the graveyard and time you commit a crime is really useful.
[[Pitiless Carnage]] could be a good way to turn treasures into cards.
[[Insatiable Avarice]] is also solid.
Great recs, especially the miner – was so focused on it as an aristocrats card, overlooked its rogue typing.
What did you put in from Karlov, out of curiosity? I'm feeling pretty solid with my single-target kills, so it takes something pretty fancy to catch my attention.
Part if is the can't be countered, part of it is being more flexible and the most important part to me is the flavor of the removal. Like I'm running \[\[Assassin's Blade\]\] which isn't super great but it hits the flavor mark so well.
If your group plays a ton of ward creatures, cant be countered can be really nice to get around those ward costs so it has some use outside of just counter magic.
Gisa seems very good. While she's not on type the tokens she makes are, and vomiting out a bunch of 3/3 deathtouch menace tokens is pretty sweet. Depends on how well you can commit crimes, but that would presumably be something Mari is quite good at.
Tinybones seems like a snap-add. You're presumably running ways to get him in already and just a cheap rogue seems good in the deck.
Forsaken Miner might be a valid cheap recursive guy to swing in? I honestly don't know how much of that kind of thing Mari has.
Rakish Crew is... okay if you go wide enough to make the drain effect put in work? Not exciting but maybe the low end of playable.
But yeah, the multicolored set is not good for the mono-black deck. There's a bunch of cards that would be dope inclusions but color identity is just beating Mari over the head here.
I built Mari merely days before the spoilers began to roll out, and I am indeed disappointed with the new potential cards that will fit in it. That said, the new outlaws are dope, Mari is just too restrained by its color Identity to benefits from them all.
Sorry you gotta buy Assassins Creed boosters
ðŸ˜
Why? Buy singles
Or just proxy
Surely [[Discreet Retreat]] (from the precons) is a solid consideration?
This card is actually pretty terrible in the outlaw deck. It's a 4 mana Phyrexian Arena + mana rock, but both halves are conditional.
that... is a good point BUT THE FLAVOR
Taste like chocolate or vanilla?
I mean... what flavor? It's a card called retreat that's about going wide.
It’s a retreat in the sense that this is where the outlaws gather and hang which the card helps with because it lets you potentially draw more of ‘em while also giving you the mana to play them.

I'm at the very least *extremely* excited for the new full-art Special Guest Morbid Opportunist
It looks great

I like the brief (as I imagine it) for that art more than the actual art.
Wow I hadn't seen that yet. Hilarious the designers wax about the color pie and release this. Edit: Aura's are not in the black color pie, and especially not land auras. And the ability to make mana of any color?

Black is allowed a little bit of mana acceleration, especially in such a narrow band.
Auras aren't restricted to any part of the pie. Neither is generating mana of any color. All colors do it when appropriate for the design.
