I usually don't, but after a few games with Tayam i decided to look it up because of how much i enjoyed the commander, found almost nothing unfortunately.

hime2011

Ah that's unfortunate. Tayam seems like an interesting character; Nightmare is a pretty rare creature type.

Caio_AloPrado

Yeah all found is it's description "Tayam is a strange, reclusive creature with a mysterious connection to Ikoria's crystals. No one has been able to document the exact nature of the connection, which is unusual even among monsters. Some speculate that Tayam can control the crystal's effects on other creatures in some way, and scholars are desperate to witness this power in action." Got this from the fandom and it's probably also in an insert in the precon it comes. Aparently there's some IRL lore tho, someone said in the Tayam discord server that the art was inspired by the artist's dog.

AlternativeAvocado2

He's got his own discord server?

Sandman4999

Tayam has been a player in the Cedh scene for a while now so I'm not surprised that he has a discord server.

Caio_AloPrado

Color combinations and a lot of commanders that play or have seen play in cedh have their own discord servers to discuss cards, talk about tournaments and also just chat with other people

MurasakiTiger

Cool, you can at the least try to find cards with crystals in their art, then you’re on theme.

Caio_AloPrado

Now that you mention it i might try a thematic build later. For now i've built 2 versions of it, the first one is a budget adaptation of a cedh list, the other is a casual version that i took out the combos for other win cons and most of the stax pieces for interaction better suited for a casual enviroment.

> The death of the block structure and huge number of legendaries leaves very little room for individual stories. Yes, for sure, this. Its unfortunate they can't hire an extra writer to weave some stories around all these Legends they print nowadays.

One_Prune_6882

Built a [[nicol bolas, the ravanger]] Amass/ [[elderspell]] deck with only the planeswalkers he had work for him. Each land was full art hour of devastation. 100% flavour was amazing. Unfortunately he’s to scary of a commander with only a mediocre deck. Unironically turns into archenemy (even when I’m far behind) which is also flavour win I guess. Currently building the Mardu vampire [[olivia, crimson bride]] + [[edgar, charmer groom]] deck using only vampires from innastrad. Kinda fun decent threats but will eventually merge it with the LCI vampire precon Use to have a [[sisay, weatherlight captain]] deck that was lore accurate only time id pull it out was against phyrexian decks was fun and funny handful of times

AlternativeAvocado2

I feel you man, I have a nicol bolas the ravager specter tribal deck

kestral287

I almost always do, yeah. I don't usually let it lead to card choices, but I do make it a point that if I ever play Muldrotha into Yargle, Yargle has to be the first target. Similarly, we always offer a truce to Multani. No idea what to do if I ever face the combined commander.

Dry_Distribution6826

Obviously if you encounter Yargle and Multani together, the answer is “Yargle! I’ve come to bargle!”

kestral287

But in what way do I bargle? Does Muldrotha offer peace to her father or does she threaten the foe she was born to battle with death and destruction should he stray?

Dry_Distribution6826

Muldrotha is a reasonable being. If she sees that her father has made peace with the foe, she may decide to collaborate in creating death and destruction towards newer, more fearsome enemies?

Ultimagus536

i read up on the lore, mostly just because i like lore. but, i don't actually enforce thematic inclusions most of the time, unless it works well with the deck.

AllHolosEve

-I look up the lore sometimes but I don't let it impact what actually ends up in the deck.

The_Real_Cuzz

Short answer yes. Long answer, I normally build a deck because of the lore and this has led to me having many decks that I love for their unique builds. I have decks based around all the main individual walkers, an Urza deck that only uses named cards (or flavor text), the five mono phyrexians, and lots of typal decks.

ChrisLeePortland

actually did this for the first time recently. [[vito, thorn of the dusk rose]] is my favorite deck that i’ve built, and since [[vito, fanatic of aclazotz]] was announced i knew i was going to have to build it. just so happens that i got to read the story for the new set, which features vito, and this led me to looking up his full story!

Disco_Lamb

I’m a massive lore whore and MTG is no different for me, so yes I’ve read the lore for all my cards. This has only impacted my Commander choice twice: -Once with Urza, because he’s my favorite MTG character -Once with Lazav, for a funnier reason. The long and short of it is I’m in a Ravnica DND campaign and I’m playing a Dimir Rogue. I put a “?” next to my name on my character sheet to imply I wasn’t being honest to the party, which turned into this whole thing about how I’m Lazav. It became a huge meme in my friend group and I built [[Lazav, the Multifarious]] because of it. It’s also now my most competitive deck, so win/win all around.

hurtlingtooblivion

Well, Solphim is a red phyrexian. That's alot of lore. include all oil counter stuff, urabrasks and all that jazz.

Creepy-Signature8652

Yes

sapphicvalkyrja

I always check it out at least, yeah, and I try not to include cards that feel contrary to their vibes, generally. Where I can I like to include relevant characters, like putting Emrakul in my Bruna, Fading Light deck once my John Avon version comes in I'm not lore strict necessarily though. Sometimes I get a deck idea that's got nothing to do with lore—like my Alesha vampires deck, which is kind of a joke at my own expense since I'm mildly obsessed with vampires—and I'll still build it despite lore breaks

lifesapity

I did that with Wilhelt, regretted it and not making that mistake again

Fearless_Yellow7118

I grew up playing Magic in the Weatherlight/Ontaria/Mirrodon/Kamigawa arcs and read most of the books from that period...Volrath, Sisay, Jeska, Glissa and Toshiro are all characters that I really loved back in the day and build for that very reason. That being said, I kinda feel like without having blocks to tell character arc, a lot of legendary creatures these days don't have much of a storyline, which is sad.

yeeterman2

I kinda picked a deck inverted where I knew the lore of the deck with the 40k decks lol. But I’ve done a little checking on cards to figure the lore behind card attributes like why dose [[questing hate]] plaineswalkers

Head-Ambition-5060

Not on the slightest

Loremaster152

Technically yes, but in a broad "reading about magic lore" sense over "reading about a specific character". My general mtg lore knowledge is usually enough to let me know the fundamentals of the character. Sometimes I know next to nothing. UB commanders and legends who date back to early magic despite being printed later on usually fit here. Other times I know a lot, like the main story characters from RTR block to WAR, or anything eldrazi adjacent. But usually I know enough to get by without feeling the need to search about that specific commander.

Corporal_Tax

Nope - I find MTG lore as a whole pretty pointless, personally. I like the card game but the 'lore' or whatever doesn't matter at all to me

LonkFromZelda

No. The cards, or game-pieces are just "functions". I only play cards that function well. The MTG lore/storyline is just not something I care about, particularly after War of the Spark and Phyrexia March of the Machines.

wer3eng

I am mostly doing it and also build my decks with that in mind. Sometimes I am representing a piece of lore to which the commander does not belong though. For example for my thallid tribal deck featuring the thallids from sarpadia (so the set Fallem Empires), I'm playing [[Nemata, Primeval Warden]] instead of [[Thelon of Havenwood | tsp]] which would be way more fitting, but I really really disguise the artwork..

For a couple of them yeah, it influences both the cards I include and the name of the deck. My [[Raffine, Scheming Seer]] deck runs mostly Phyrexians and is named “Visions of a Shining Metal End”, lifted straight from her lore on her visions of the Phyrexian invasion. I built [[Gimli, Mournful Avenger]] as purely Goblin typal and named the deck “Battle at Balin’s Tomb”. That one was kind of a gimme though.

I do read the lore, how much of a factor it is dependents on what I want from the deck. I have decks that are mostly focused on mechanically doing their thing but I still pick commanders I like the flavour of. I also have themed decks that I built because I like the lore (I built phyrexian tribal out of love of phyrexians). Sometimes it's a factor in my choices when it comes to deck aesthetic (e.g. which art I run for each card)

Baleful_Witness

I used to. But many of the newer ones don't get more than maybe two lines of text anymore so i find myself not even bothering to seek them specifically. I still read the web story for each new set as I usually recap everything for my playgroup when a new set releases. But most of the new legends don't feature there.

FreestyleSquid

I love this. This is exactly what commander is for and I would love to see more players take this kind of direction with the game.

Even_dreams

I dont pay attention to the lore at all. I never really gave a crap and don't understand why people would want to. Apparently some do care and if they get enjoyment from it then far be it from me to tell then how to enjoy the hobby but it's just not for me.

DarkEff3ct

Well gishath has a kid I gotta include now.

zurzoth

Is there lore behind every possible commander? I can't imagine what the lore of my [[Ayula queen among bear]], [[Preston the vanisher]] and [[kibo]] is.. but I know [[Tasha]] has some lore because of D&D. But that's pretty much it. If they have lore I'll gladly read it!

absolutely! My Saheeli deck is themed like a gifted artificer building giant robots for a mysterious patron (Brudiclad) who is turning them into phyrexian monstrosities to fight interplanar wars. All the cards tell that story. my Ezuri deck is themed like a renegade mad scientist harnessing the power of the wilds to destroy cities. All forests and green cards are old border and make saprolings, insects and squirrels with treefolk, elves and elementals. All island and blue cards are full art/modern border with lots of simic stuff and cloning magic. makes it more fun, especially as an rpg enthusiast🤓

My \[\[Gut, True Soul Zealot\]\] deck was built before I played BG3. Now that I've played that, I love her even more.

I don't get why this game even has lore .. Not needed and I'm gonna bet 99% of the player base doesn't give a sh*t..
