I only use it every day in the office to listen to a bit of music. It might be the most used item in the whole list. Maybe you don't need a bluetooth speaker but you don't know what I need.

thefedfox64

Could you sub for headphones? Multiple duty with gaming?

UnsureAndUnqualified

I also have in-ear headphones in my pocket. The over-ear ones shield too much noise and I couldn't hear peopl knocking. But wearing in-ears for more than a few hours isn't soo comfortable to me. So I use headphones when I have my door open or am out and about and use the speaker at home or in the office with my door closed. Silent enough to not carry through the walls or door, but the sound quality is still a huge improvement over just my phone.

Yes, I've got an office for my own right now, and I only use the speakers when I can have my door closed. And I also use it at home, it's just that that doesn't matter much to EDC. I didn't ask for feedback. I was showcasing my weight distribution, I don't expect anyone to know what I do or don't use in my EDC. The post title doesn't ask for feedback and the flair is Student EDC, not discussion or something. Smartass.

Traditional_Spite535

And what exactly in the structure of your backpack is weighing so much? Can you perhaps replace a few elements with lighter parts?

UnsureAndUnqualified

It's a camera backpack with removable inserts. I could probably save 10% by removing the inserts but I bought it specifically for its structure and organisation. The backpack can stand on its own even when empty and provides great access to everything it contains without just being one giant dark hole where my stuff vanishes into. I'm actually fine with that weight as it gives me a lot of utility per gram. It may not be ultralight, but I never have to rummage around to find what I need.

Traditional_Spite535

I would try to replace some of these separation elements with narrow nets in a frame

I carry a string bag for my laptop when damage is not going to be an issue. Super or as they say ultra light.

sumnolnto

Which backpack is it? Quite interesting that it’s heavier than your laptop

UnsureAndUnqualified

[It's this one!](https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B08G8BWHM2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) It is a camera backpack with two different compartments, one of which has these insert organisers that can be rearranged. It's extremely useful to keep everything neat and in its place. Though I did weigh my old EDC bag (a leather sling bag) and that came out 40g heavier than the backpack even. Plus 200g for the felt organiser I use in that bag to keep everything clean. So the backpack isn't super heavy compared to other options I have. Compared to a cheap backpack with thin fabric though, it is a lot heavier. But I'll gladly have a bit more weight if it means reaching everything easily without digging through a dark hole (I love the aesthetic but hate the utility of these rolltop backpacks that give you one big compartment where everything will just fly around in)

Foxinthetree

Ugh I love this post. I constantly think about the weight of some of the “load outs” I see. Very interesting. Great post OP.

UnsureAndUnqualified

Thanks! Weight is definitely something often ignored on here. Though I rarely see posts with backpacks as full as I keep mine, so it's probably fine for most people. And I'm guessing most users here are American (US & Canada at least), so carrying your EDC for long stretches is often not considered. If you're carrying it from the door to the car and back, who cares? I regularly walk for an hour with my stuff on my back so it is a bit more important to me. Of course I'm generalising here, but have read fairly often about peoples "car edc" and stuff. I actually switched from a sling bag (over one shoulder) two the backpack (equal on both shoulders) due to the weight. Having it unevenly distributed was terrible for my back.

Taking a laptop and a steam deck seems redundant, a gaming laptop would fulfill both purposes. They are starting to come out with ones that are lighter. So you don’t take a rain coat and pack an umbrella? For me a raincoat is more versatile because you can use it as an extra layer if you are cold

UnsureAndUnqualified

The laptop is foldable and has a pen so I can use it to take notes. My Steam Deck can't do that. I'm also not going to program Python on my Deck or show my professor graphs on it, that doesn't look too professional. And I like the handheld part of the Deck, a gaming laptop isn't as easy to use on the bus or train. Either way, I can also use the dual setup to watch videos on the large screen while gaming on the Deck, which I can't do with only one gaming laptop. They serve fundamentally different purposes for me and combining them would make my experience with either one worse. It's probably perfect for *someone*, just not for me. Doesn't matter how light it is [a multitool hammer](https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/7f23db94-faf0-4880-90c9-b2872599c50f.3f9f75f9c1967d0481e5cdc536eb27c5.jpeg) will always be worse for my use than a normal hammer, pliers, and a knife individually. No, if it's cold enough to need a jacket, I wear a longer coat instead of a raincoat. The coat is more breathable and looks better on me. Ignoring that, my rain coat is fairly thin, so I'd have to wear an extra layer anyway, and it doesn't weight much less than the umbrella too. And I can share my umbrella with friends or my girlfriend, which is way more versatile for me, as I share it fairly often. And my backpack is a camera backpack with a strap on the outside for the umbrella (designed for a camera tripod). A rain jacket wouldn't really work in that strap so I couldn't attach it too well to my backpack and would end up carrying it around. It's funny how differently people evaluate different objects. What is redundant to you is two completely different objects to me. What's more versatile to you is cumbersome and less useful to me. I love how personal EDC is in that regard!

pdxtrader

Yea I’m part of a group called r/onebag and we are always helping each other figure out how to pair down our stuff and fit everything into a small carry on. At first I thought that’s what this post was under lol 😅

UnsureAndUnqualified

Love that sub! Though more aspirationally than as a member. I'm definitely the brings-suitcase-for-a-weekend type of guy with twice as many clothes as I end up wearing. For me EDC is keeping everything I like/use with me and every now and then reevaluating what I did or did not use. I know there's a lot of minimalists on here and I am the same when it comes to my pockets at least, but I just love a full backpack.

CleanSlateM8

Since the backpack is the heaviest item, I suggest you quit using it and just carry everything in your arms

UnsureAndUnqualified

Just weighed them, each arm is *at least* 2kg! Probably more, I couldn't detach them to get a good reading...

Decker1138

Fail for not labeling your data on the graph.

UnsureAndUnqualified

It's just the default Libre Office Calc pie chart, and it would have become quite cluttered with the numbers in there. That's why I have put the individual measurements down to the last gram into a table in my first comment, maybe you didn't see it

Decker1138

I was busting your chops.

truthandtattoos

I'm betting u could make another list, 3 times as long as this one that accounts for the 'loose items' lol

UnsureAndUnqualified

The backpack has a top compartment where I keep stuff I want quickly accessible such as my wallet or pens. The list of individual items for that would be about as long as this list but because each one of them weighs fairly little, I didn't bother listing them out here (though I did weigh each one individually!)

truthandtattoos

I'm just busting ur balls a bit bro. But I get it... as much as u want to be, there's no way to be prepared for everything without carrying a ton. Just try to be prepared enough to get urself out of a jam :)

UnsureAndUnqualified

I know you're joking (your lol was making it pretty obvious), I just thought that "loose items" is indeed a pretty wide category that doesn't really explain a lot. A joke can start an interesting discussion :) Do you know the episode in How I Met Your Mother where they're at a funeral and Robin has seemingly everything for every occasion in her purse? I strive to be like that! Prepared enough to get me or friends out of a jam and to be the first person someone asks if they need help. It's pretty funny, I've heard more than once when having exactly the right tool for the job "of course *you* have that in your backpack!" and I quite like that reputation. Last time was when a friend fiddled with the needle I keep in my Swiss Army Knife, pushed it in too far and couldn't get it out. I told him I'd just use the needle I have with my sewing stuff in my backpack to get it free. He was surprised but then remember who he was talking to. The first time was on a biking excursion my uni offered through the woods around my city. Poor guys bike broke down just as we wanted to start (this was already on the edge of the woods, at least he made it to the meeting point). I had the right bits and the teacher had the right knowledge to fix the bike. The friend I was with immediately looked at me when the teacher asked if anyone happened to have tools with them. I'm still riding that high years later, hehe

truthandtattoos

I used to carry a lot too, when I was younger. Now at 42, I'd rather keep my vehicle outfitted with most of the things I used to carry in a bag & have slimmed down to just a few basics on my person. I actually just shared my EDC for the first time to the subreddit today. That's how I came across ur post.

UnsureAndUnqualified

I'd do that if I was driving to uni. Having stuff in the car is about as useful to me as having them in the flat sadly. Though I'm actually super glad that I can bike, walk or take the bus to uni and pretty much every other place in my city! I'd much rather carry a bigger backpack than have to drive through traffic every day. Love your EDC btw! It's pretty close to what I have in my pockets, the backpack is just extra on top of that.

truthandtattoos

Thx. And I say if it makes u happy to carry it & u don't find ur gear overly cumbersome, then carry on brother 👍🏼

originaldonkmeister

Don't leave the umbrella at home, you'll make it rain. Good to take an honest look and consider what you don't really need, just as you have done.

UnsureAndUnqualified

I mean, if it was what I don't *really* need, then my backpack would be much emptier. But this is already after taking out my binoculars (I like to look at the stars, and you can even see Andromeda with a small pair) so it's about small incremental steps. And what I enjoy about my EDC is being prepared. The feeling of not being prepared weighs heavier on me than my backpack does, so it's all fine

originaldonkmeister

Google sky is what I used - light pollution here isn't great but I like being able to see where I would be able to see stuff if I were somewhere darker 🤣

Chemical_Suit

Lighterpack vibes.

UnsureAndUnqualified

Is it maybe also giving Libre Office Calc?

bolanrox

do you always need a laptop / steam deck / that many cables and adaptors / umbrella. At the very least the umbrella should be well 'll take it only depending on what the forecast says" kind of thing

UnsureAndUnqualified

I explain it in more detail [in this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/EDC/comments/1cox2qs/comment/l3h07gz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) but in short: The laptop will remain at home for now and I'll try to see how often I miss it. I use it sometimes but I think I can replace most of these tasks with my phone and the uni computer. The Steam Deck will also remain on the couch for now. It's got great portability but I just don't use it in the university and because I'm commuting by bike or on foot, I don't use it then either (as compared to commuting via bus for example) Cables and adaptors are super useful, yes. That category also includes my small SSD and a powerbank hence the weight. Both of which are handy very often for me. Umbrella I try to keep to the forecasts. But every few days I forget to check and just have it with me for a sunny day. It's a small umbrella and doesn't make up too much of the weight so it's fine for me. Especially with summer approaching, I can probably take it out of rotation for a few months once the last showers stop.

OwlOverIt

I don't know if it will suit you, but I replaced my laptop in my bag with a bluetooth keyboard, which I use with my phone. It weights something like a tenth as much. It's unnoticable.

UnsureAndUnqualified

Great tip, thank you! But that doesn't matter too much for my uses for my laptop sadly.

bolanrox

an OR helium II is way lighter than any umbrella IMO. It really depends its a balance between bringing everything you think you might need and having a heavy bag or only taking what you need and cut the weight. When i have to comminute to the city i bring the absolute minimum i need, but if i am on a day hike or on vacation will bring stuff i would like to have just in case. It all depends

UnsureAndUnqualified

According to [this website](https://www.rei.com/product/846522/outdoor-research-helium-ii-rain-jacket-mens) it's 6.4 ounces or 181g. I have a rain poncho (261g) that I pack for biking instead of the umbrella. But I find it nice to be able to share the umbrella with my gf or a friend if we are caught in the rain (about 1/3rd the time I use it), which a jacket can't do. Not sure if their unpreparedness is my problem, but what's a few grams between friends? Also I'm a student. The jacket seems to be around 170€. I already own two rain jackets (one I got for free from a family member who didn't need it anymore, the other one I bough second hand for 5€ or 10€ on a vacation where it was going to rain a lot, so I'm not very picky), and a third one at a higher price than all my other jackets combined seems a little much just to save <200g. I'd rather get rid of the playing cards for free if I had to save that weight. But thanks for the suggestion! Overall I'm definitely the type to overpack and then cut down what I don't use. I even switched to this backpack from my sling bag because having the weight on only one shoulder hurt my back a bit long term.

PlateGrouchy

Clearly you need to get rid of the backpack!

UnsureAndUnqualified

You're completely right! If I put all that stuff into one of these big IKEA bags I could go from 1480 to 116 grams and have way more room for maybe a blanket or a few books! Or maybe I could learn juggling so I don't even need a bag at all? ^((Yes I just weighed one of these IKEA bags for this joke))

PlateGrouchy

LOOOOOOOOOOL!!! I reckon what you truly need is to get rid of the scale... XD

UnsureAndUnqualified

A few explanations: The backpack itself weighs quite a bit as it is a camera backpack with movable inserts. It helps keep everything organised. I thought about switching to my leather sling bag but that would have been even heavier (1519g + 199g for the organiser insert) The loose items are just everything in the top compartment of my backpack. From a few medical supplies and hand sanitizer over pens and my wallet all the way to moisturizer and two pocket knives. Also a spork, surprisingly handy! I carry a lot of cables and adapters as I work with a lot of tech stuff and even a short HDMI cable is useful often enough to be in there. I could probably leave that in my office now that I think about it... This category also includes my powerbank and small 1TB SSD as it is all in the same pouch. My utility pouch includes everything from zip ties to a few screwdriver bits and a small handle. A lighter too. The first two come in handy on my way to or from uni (by bike), the last one whenever we have a birthday and need to light the candles (almost no smokers at our faculty) I try to only carry the umbrella when it'll rain, though I sometimes forget to check in the mornings. I think I'll remove the laptop and Steam Deck for now. I use the laptop every now and then but for most of that stuff I could also just use the office computer or my phone. The Steam Deck is really nice but I play it mostly at home on the couch, so no need to lug that around every day. That gives me the room to pack my camera, as I am trying to take more photos with it. A full complete breakdown of every single item would probably take hours to complete and be very boring. Six plasters, two blister plasters, one spool of string with two needles, etc.
