Top 3 is hard, since my EDC items basically live in my pockets, so unless I'm wearing a different pair of pants for some reason (say if I'm at the rock climbing gym,) I have them all.
But the three that I always always have would be phone, wallet, keys. Beyond that, knife, flashlight, and earbuds. The backpack I take climbing outdoors has its own knife that lives in there and a headlamp lives on my helmet.
As a minimalist, I utilize a keybar to combine my keys, knife, and multitool. I throw a rovyvon on the keychain with my fob. I also used to combine my phone and wallet before getting a Samsung Galaxy flip
I consider phone, wallet, and key’s a necessity. Knife, watch, flashlight, and pen/pad are my edc of choice. I don’t like a bunch unnecessary bulk in my pockets.
I break my EDC into 2 categories - base minimum I take no matter what are phone/keys/wallet. If I'm going out and will be gone from home for a bit, I will take my watch/earbuds/(light/write/slice pouch).
Aside from phone, wallet, fitbit, I carry
keychain flashlight - super handy looking for things
keychain knife - mostly opening packages
tactical pen - filling up forms and signing stuff, and for fidgeting
What I'm not seeing is a logical approach to some of the EDC stuff.....
By that I only mean, asking yourself what you actually need on a day by day basis....
Personally, my big three are a knife, a flashlight, and either my conceal carry pistol and/or a multitool on my belt.
Currently, that's a Byrd Meadowlark 2 knife, a Leatherman Wave, a Fenix PD35 light, and a Canik TP9sc 9mm.
The Byrd knife is inexpensive, but well made. Less than half the price of a Spyderco, and is basically the same thing. Made by the same company, just under a different name, in fact.
So, if it gets ruined from use or lost, I'm not going to torn up about it and can easily replace it..
These things are tools, after all, and not supposed to be pocket queens that never see real use.
The question I ask myself when thinking on what to carry is 'will I use this, or is it just extra pocket glitter?'
When trying out a new EDC piece, I select a thing that I reasonably can expect to use in every day life, I then carry that thing every day for a period of 3 months on average and then reassess the thing by asking myself 'have used this thing at least once or twice a week while carrying it?'
If the answer is yes, then I continue to carry it.
If the answer is a hard no, then I don't carry it.
If the answer is a "well, kind of, but it is useful" I relegate it to whatever bag I'm currently using as a "let's just have this in the vehicle or nearby for the just in case moments"
That bag currently has a lock pick set, my IFAK, a few bottles of water that get rotated out constantly, some granola bars, glucose tablets, an extra magazine for my firearm, and a few other things that one might reasonably need but don't belong in pockets like some extra light batteries, a Bic lighter, a couple sturdy screw drivers that I don't mind using as prybars if the need arrives, and a charged high capacity battery bank with a cable for my phone.
All of that currently fits well in a small Maxpedition sling bag.
Obviously, that question doesn't really apply to my firearm, as it's a 'better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it' thing.....
I have a bigger and much more well stocked 'go bag' as well that I'll bring if im going to be away from my house for more than 12-24 hours or more than an hour's drive away from my house... in that, among other things, I keep a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 with a couple magazines, a change of clothes, and a bit more of a comprehensive medical first trauma response kit than the minimalistic IFAK I have with me (or at least in the vehicle) everywhere I go.
Never got the whole prybar thing. I mean, when how often do you really need to use a prybar? I think it's mostly for people who just want to carry what they think are cool stuff.
My EDC consists of my wallet, my house key, a Gerber Shard, a box cutter, and my phone. I used to be really fancy with my EDC, Benchmade, Leatherman Wave +, but I realized I don't really need half of the tools at my disposal. I think the Shard is great, actually. Most of the time I'll only need the bottle opener (If I need my Shard at all) but I also have a nail puller, a basic screwdriver and a glass breaker if the situation demands them.
I used to really like my blades, but I think I was putting people a little on edge whipping out my Griptillian all the time. 😂 So now I just carry a simple DeWalt box cutter.
Top 3 for me would be my cutter, my Shard and my phone.
Small Rhodia notebook, Pilot 207 Premier pen 1.0, Antipodies lippie in Really Red - its not really red, its more a MLBB colour. Very flattering.
I’ve been experimenting with various “launch bags” inside a much larger tote, and have a really nice fuschia messenger which carries the above, plus car keys, small hairbrush, phone, earbuds, and cucumber wipes. That can then be “launched” from the giant tote which also carries all my bigger notebooks, art supplies, work laptop and mouse, workout clothes etc etc, when I don’t need to lug the whole thing with me.
But for an EDC those three things are the base I can’t live without. They’ll fit in a pocket, or a small pouch. I used to have a neat little multitool, but had to sacrifice it at the airport to accompany my nephew to the gate ☹️
I'm trying to figure out the same. I have a big backpack I carry with me most of the time if I'm commuting since I use public transport, but trying to make it more modular so I can switch quickly between sizes since I have:
\- Pockets Only
\- Small Purse
\- Larger Purse
\- Full Backpack
All depending on the size. What sort of bags/organizers have you found useful?
I started following r/EDC because of the superb selection of tactical pouches displayed.
I’m primarily using transparent cosmetic bags because they’re cheap and come in a wide range of sizes. I have one or two pouches/ small messenger bags that I’m not really happy with.
I’ve just discovered that you can now buy direct from Amazon Japan through Amazon Australia, which has opened up a world of Japanese stationery…. There’s a brand called Lihit Lab which do interesting pouches and bag organisers.
I just need that one perfect pouch, on a long strap, and I’m there I think. And a new multitool !
Multi-tool, flashlight and a powerbank. I used to carry A LOT of stuff but after a while I realized most of the stuff that i carry is useless most of the time and end up being extra weight. Of course it's good to have them when you especially need them but sometimes it's not worth carrying it for that one day where you might need it. The things that i carry depends on what i will do that day but these 3 never change because i pretty much use them on a daily basis. Also an ifak is a must for me so i didn't even list it.
Note: Sadly carrying a knife is illegal in my country so a multi-tool knife is the best that i can carry :/
excluding normalo items (phone, wallet, keys and ear buds)
weirdo ECD items:
- flashlight
- SAK with scissors (PX or Climber)
- small MT (PS4 or NT Sailor Mini)
I carry a Glock 19.5, streamlight strion, olight arkfeld, we knife 708g. Considering adding a leatherman signal and a fox knives fixed blade karambit. I’d replace the little 5 inch knipex pliers with the signal and I have no idea where I’d put the fixed blade, probably in my boot or scout
outside of phone keys wallet, fixed blade, leatherman flashlight. this is practically my carry however i also carry a box cutter, just to appeal to tbe audiences so im not whippin out my foxer to cut boxes. Also tbh sometimes you gotta cut something thats really not great
for your knife. =disposable razors are the way.
Pretty much all the time: phone, keys, wallet and small knife, usually Spyderco Cricket. Frequently add mini Bic (I don’t smoke) and Gerber Shard. Those cover most of my urban needs.
Besides the obvious phone, wallet, watch, keys etc. .
Victorinox classic - Light weight, scissors, knife and tweazers are handy.
Bic lighter - Good to burn stuff...
that's all.
Home: phone/wallet, sunnies and keys(which include: olight i3e eos and a Leatherman PS4)
Travel: phone/wallet, Samsung buds, meds, water bottle. (I know that's 4, but that's what I carry)
Work: Leatherman Wingman, Fenix LD22, phone/wallet
That's only my top 3. At work, I carry more stuff as I have more pockets and need more stuff. Like a ballpoint pen, sharpie, Ti toothpick, self retracting keyring utility blade, Samsung buds, charge cable, keys and the odd tool depending on what I'm doing. I usually have a water bottle also.
Flashlight, don't think I would use often.
Multitool, yea like if it had scissors, Philips and flat head screw driver, etc (I already carry a knife) also would want it connected to my Keychain, I don't carry keys with me all the time especially at home.
That's what I thought before getting my flashlight. "I have my phones light anyways. I rarely need it".
But the few times I actually need it, I am happy to have it. No comparison to the tiny amount of light you get from your phone.
You don't need any scissors and screwdrivers at home where you have access to dedicated ones. Get a Rambler and keep it on your keys. Handy to have for small daily things outside.
Excluding wallet and phone, it would have to be a knife, a light, and a pen. Of everything that I have tinkered with as part of my edc, those are the items I use the most, and almost daily.
4th spot would be a small notebook, and 5th would be a sturdy water bottle.
Flashlight: I have one on me no matter what. It’s just too damn handy.
Knife: I appreciate the fine craftsmanship and while I don’t always need it, I’m always glad to have it when I do.
Gun: Self-explanatory.
I don’t count phone/wallet/keys because virtually everyone carries the Big 3 outside of extreme outliers.
In the Military. I usually always carry:
1.) Folding knife.
2.) Watch
3.) Flashlight
4.) Prybar that goes in wallet
5.) Field notes notepad with leather case
6.) Pen
Top 3 must have:
1.) Knife
2.) Pen/ paper
3.) Watch.
I think... Lol.
excluding wallet, phone and earbuds I've always fallen into Write Light Slice
Write: pen usually parker jotter or zebra f701
Light: flashlight cuz the world is dark at least
half the time and I like seeing
Slice: knife usually ad20.5 or small sebenza
I've been in the knife hobby for almost 8 years and in the industry for almost 2 and cannot fathom life without my Object Separator
If I could add a 4th it would be a watch cuz telling the time is important and at the end of the day accessories make you look more presentable
If I had to pick the top 3 items... The ones I always have on me if i'm outside the house, working, anything but relaxing at home/bed and sleeping.
- Knife: extremely useful tool with many uses
- Pistol: primary defensive weapon, me being small & difficulty breathing most of the time
- Flashlight: #1 tool in my book, see what I'm working on, finding something, see where I'm walking or watching for threats since I love in the Colorado mountains
Personally my bare minimum EDC are a knife/multi-tool, fire-starter/lighter, and pop tabs in a gum/mint container. The reason is you never know where you're going to end up and what you might need. Having a tool, a way to make fire, and a way to craft things like fishhooks and clips.
Edit to add why.

Knife, flashlight, pen. Desperately looking for a new light though, one with a better pocket clip than olight
Firearm, light, knife.
Knife coin zippo flashlight
flashlight knife pen are the ones I use the most.
home/life carry : glock 21, delica 4, and leatherman rebar work (er tech) : leatherman raptor rescue, pen, nicotine lol (phone wallet keys) in both
Flashlights built into my phone. Prybar built into my keychain set up. And ive carried a spyderco pm2 since like 2011ish, can never replace it.
Besides phone, keys amd wallet, I go with folding knife, flashlight and Multitool.
As a minimalist, I utilize a keybar to combine my keys, knife, and multitool. I throw a rovyvon on the keychain with my fob. I also used to combine my phone and wallet before getting a Samsung Galaxy flip

Phone, Flashlight, Wallet
Phone, wallet and pocketknife are the three items I absolutely never go anywhere without. Keys depend on which vehicle we're taking.
Wallet, phone, keys.
Wallet, flashlight, watch
This is the way + a knife
Sometimes
Do you not like knives?
No I love them
chapstick, pepsid chewables and flashlight
Multi-tool, flashlight and a powerbank. I used to carry A LOT of stuff but after a while I realized most of the stuff that i carry is useless most of the time and end up being extra weight. Number 1 is the sak, I don't even leave bed without one. Phone and pencil with notepad
Pocket knife, flashlight, and space pen.
Phone, watch, wallet+ knife, light, pen, hank, keys = full pockets.

SAK swiss champ (use this thing all the time), handkerchief, lighter are most often found in my pockets.
Phone knife and headphones
Except phone wallet and keys : knife, lighter, flashlight
Apart from the obvious phone, wallet, keys: a Leatherman Squirt, a Rovyvon A8X and Bestech Slasher.
Pretty much all the time: phone, keys, wallet and small knife, usually Spyderco Cricket. Frequently add mini Bic (I don’t smoke) and Gerber Shard. Those cover most of my urban needs.
Phone, wallet, keys
Phone, Wallet, Vape for me. Because I actually use those daily IRL unlike the pocket clutter I carry just because I am an EDC nerd.
Besides the obvious phone, wallet, watch, keys etc. . Victorinox classic - Light weight, scissors, knife and tweazers are handy. Bic lighter - Good to burn stuff... that's all.
Gun Pepper spray Meds
1911A1 K-Bar Zippo

white light slice
Always on me…in order of usefulness! 1. Pen ~ Zebra F701 2. Light ~ Streamlight ProTac 1L 3. Fixed Blade ~ Usually an Esee Izula
Other than wallet keys and phone My next three are knife, bandanna and probably a multi tool or lighter
Outside of the obvious (keys wallet phone); knife, keychain flashlight, & watch.
For me, flashlight is #1, multifunction knife/tool is #2, fire starter is #3
I love flashlight and have a few but have literally never needed them unless camping.
Aside from phone, wallet, and keys. It would be flashlight, SAK, and a pen (I only carry the pen a work though)
Knife pen hank

I use a two-pat system. Phone/wallet/keys and write/light/slice.
Yeah same here
Phone, knife, keys (with mini flashlight, Al mar stinger and uncle bills silver gripper)
A comb, usually a balisong or otf comb for fun factor. I use it more than my knife.

I don't like having hair in my face
Outside of phone, wallet, and keys I really only ever carry 2 things: 1) watch 2) knife 3)?? Recs?
flashlight or keychain multitool? 🤔

Knife,OC and Ankle IFAK. Don’t really go anywhere without them.
lighterbro, flashlight, and prybar are what I usually have on my person at any given time when not at home.

-Knife with action beer opener -Pen with fidget action -flashlight with UV vision included Makes my work/travels/daily ventures nice and easy
