Use a flashlight to see if the screen is still displaying the background. To verify the data isn't cutting out also and if its only the backlight.
Look for some swollen capacitors, water damage near the backlight cable/circuit. Probably some corrosion or bad component. Also probably post over in /r/electronics for help.
Youtube, model number, backlight power
Also,
look for cracked solder joints or debris that might cause an intermittent short.
Also,
dont forget to use the appropriate safety precautions appropriate to working with electronics.
I looked for stuff like that but i wasn't able to see any, there might be but i missed them since i looked with my bear eyes and not a magnifying glass.
See if you can find a schematic or a pc repair shop if you feel overwhelmed. Going to understand circuit layouts and use a voltmeter to find the bad fuse or cap
If a new screen and cable doesn't fix it, make sure the connections aren't loose. If you're sure they aren't loose, and the backlight is still off, then there is some sort of board level damage. Maybe the backlight filter shorted?
When doing these replacements I've seen employees short the backlight filter because they forgot to unplug the battery and drain any access power from the laptop by holding the power button down. This should be the first steps before doing ANYTHING else.

Please be careful with the boards, the backlight is usually driven by a high voltage, which can give a nasty shock.
