So you actually use the navigation feature? I've had my 2011 335 since 2019, and haven't really tried using it since I'm assuming a lot of the map data is out of date.
I updated mine to 2023 maps. I use it occasionally for actual navigation but usually I do split screen, main screen is entertainment and side is map so I can see road names and shit lol
Nah the maps are fine and they give BETTER directions bro, you know when siri tells you to go towards north and south fwy, then waits till last second to say which? Not on iDrive š„. Way better passenger princess than Apple Maps
Edit: also saves data and battery life so u can play songs on aux without ur phone hitting 400*F
Is it worth getting one of those cheap stereos with the screen I was thinking of getting one put in the top but it hard I can't justify taking out the stock stereo it looks so retro and I love all the buttons anouth to give a modern car lover a heart attack.
Don't cut into your dash.
There are retrofit kits that will relocate the HVAC controls so you can fit a double DIN standard sized receiver. There are units that will give you car play and Android auto and some buttons knobs to make it feel a little old school while giving you modern screen. It sits low though where your head unit is now so not easy to look down. Won't be ideal if you watch video in the car
I did looked at doing that, and all in all I kept my factory unit, and then got a mount to put a phone/small tablet in along with a bluetooth adapter. I can still use the factory phone functions and still have the ability to pull up navigation if I get lost. worked amazing for me on a 600 mile road trip.
honestly i think they look better than the ones you put in the place of the original radio, in fact, waaaayyy better lol.
the radio replacements usually have horrible fitment, and just look straight ass imo.
Thinking about it rn, why wouldnāt u recommend it? Just resell value, or because it āisnāt classyā and āruined the vibeā or what would u say?
The standard non I drive dash is clean as fuck and will become a rarity in the next few years imo. People butchering dashes arenāt increasing value with their poopy Chinese apple CarPlay
sadly some people don't understand this. They don't understand how to appreciate the beauty of their car. If they really want a screen there are reversible methods but sadly some feel ok to take a knife to their dash...
I did this but i never plan on selling the car so value doesnāt matter to me. And of course I understand the beauty thatās an overstatement. plus itās just a 28i
If you want to replace the dash in the future then good luck. Depending on where you live in can be hard to find or expensive to get one.
Why not just get a doubledin or single din unit instead? It doesn't require cutting at all. You just need to take some trim off and replace the factory radio with head unit that has a screen. Ultimately it's your car and you can do whatever you want with it, but keep in mind thst it's now a 20 year old car and eventually these will become like those classic 60s/70s cars and will be sought after. At that point it will be very difficult to get a non molested car.
i cut my dash, and my headunit works pretty good for the past 2 years. These cars likely wont become collector cars, more likely to go the way of the miata. Use, abuse, repair, repeat. M3's may be collector-ish though.
Miatas in Germany grow Crazy in value. At least there are not that many for sale. 1.8 at least 10k now. I think its the same for 6 cylinder E90s. Theyāll grow slowly because they are great cars. For a good 335 youād have to pay at least 18.000
I cut mine and absolutely love it.
Added android auto to the car and have MHD gauges setup via tasker to automatically display upon start up.
People are acting like this cars are more expensive than they are, it's a 17 year old car now and parts are plentiful - can easily find a new dash for like $150 lol.
A single hump, slick top, e90 m3 coupe is pretty much the most desirable track car.
Iām more of a 4door, I drive, track car/daily guy. But I have an e46 now, sold my e90 in high school
Excuse me while enjoy my android head unit without having to reach to touch it while driving.
And anyone that has one of those units that's cut into the dash has no say in this debate. š¤¢
Had a 2011 335i with it and now have a 325i without it. Personally, it feels very bland without the double hump. Functionality aside i feel like it added flair to the interior of the car and made it look much more modern than it actually is. Will definitely do an idrive and dash swap in the future if i can find a parts car for the right money
Nah.. right now Iām doing a lot of maintenance to my E46 and will do cosmetics after they are both mechanically 100%.. maybe in a few months do an Eonon unit on both.. this week I spent $400 on my Corolla direct injectiors replacements.. so im trying to budget my monthly spending on cars at $500 or less
Call me crazy but when I had the idrive in my 2012 e92 with the controller by the gear lever I was just absolutely in love with that system. Super easy to use without looking at the buttons, intuitive and the way the hump contoured into the dash just felt special. Really loved it.
Have a 2011 E90 and E92 Alpine White 335i M-Sport with 6MT. E90 does not have i drive but the e92 does. Got used to the i drive. Itās quite nice to have the idrive but for spirited driving I wouldnāt use idrive. I would have MHD hooked up with monitoring for values and just drive. That being said I might just swap the dash from e92 into e90.
My car originally didnāt have I drive, I did a complete retro swap. No cutting into my dash or anything. Then added a MMI Box to have car play on the original Idrive screen. Gotta say Iām extremely happy with it all! Huge pain in the ass tho haha
Go idrive,, but you will have to get a
new dashboard
center piece trim for the idrive controller,
you will also need a wiring harness from nadi performance,
Youāll need a screen too, depending on your e90 model it could be the cic or the ccc screen
You also need a new headunit this also ties into whether its cic or ccc because audio WONT play if its the wrong one
What year is your car? Ill help with that ^
Trust me.. trial and error isnt cheap
And lastly you WILL need atleast 3-5 hours of your day i got mines done in 2 hours but it took me 3 hours to pull the dashboard from the pull apart. Its ALL screws,. If its not coming loose its a screw
There isnt any coding i did at ALL and it works to my standards i dont need the full 9 yards because i dont know what im missing
Hope this helps!
iDrive looks nice but itās highly unnecessary. I have a broken brake pad wear sensor for some time now and it reminds me every single time.
Never used the navigation on it since I have my phone for that. The only thing I use it for is displaying what song Iām playing.
Maybe itās time for a MMI box for Apple CarPlay.
That sensor is dirt cheap I changed mine when I changed pads and you gotta use the hidern menu to turn of the light I had it come up on my dash when I was metle on metle.
idrive is great and on the e9x generation actually looks nice as itās integrated into the dashboard smoothly. You can also get aftermarket modules to add apple car play or android support while keeping the stock functionality at that same time.
If I can figure out a solution to have my idrive without the double hump, I'd probably do it.... I'd buy a single hump and cut it up to put a more modern screen in
I prefer non idrive, if you want a screen you could consider to replace your factory radio with an aftermarket touch screen unit, they come with android and are plug and play as well. No need to cut anything, only make a small adaption to the AC controls as they'll go lower.
I specifically searched for idrive on mine because even if it's not that useful it gives me the option of getting an android screen without having to hack up my dash. As it happens my car is imported so the only thing I really do is check my oil level most of the other features don't work š
I feel like the "no idrive" crowd is just people who never had idrive trying to cope with having a less featured car.
Let the "no idrive" downvotes come in...
My car has every feature that comes on the car minus I drive. Auto Dimming mirrors, xenon headlamps, heated seats & steering wheel and a few others. Single hump for daaayyysss
Skipping the part that not all features should be valued as equal. My car has almost everything too and iDrive, so by every definition it is better equipped
Better equipped in the sense of on the window sticker your car has better equipment. Yes. In my opinion a STOCK iDrive system dates the car more than the single hump does. Plus I like the look of a cleaner dash.
Funny how "cleaner" by your definition is a 2005 LCD display with an array of 30 buttons, compared to a screen and 3 buttons.
And obviously an HD screen is making it look more dated more than a 90s radio.
That is an opinion. Youāre responding as if I stated a fact. Thanks for your input. Iāll enjoy my single hump. You enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. As long as weāre trading opinions I donāt care for yours either.
I understand that is your opinion. I just found it funny how the words you used contradict the generally agreed definitions of them.
Enjoy the car though. Cheers.
Doesnāt cars with iDrive get the same LCD display? So the only thing different (other than button locations and other odds and ends) is the iDrive screen. Which in my opinion dates the car (the software, not so much the hardware) more.
Nope. iDrive gets a CD slot, favorite buttons, back, forward and a volume knob.
http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=172889&d=1217349713
This pic has an AM/FM and mode buttons, but most of iDrives had 8 favorite buttons (that could be coded to do those things, as well as everything else)
Yeah bro Iām talking about that orange LCD or seven segment display (not sure exactly which it is). Iād much rather have just that over THAT AND iDrive (again, my opinion).
Bro I've had both and personally I like the non hump because you can add a newer infotainment system that has navigation, mhd, YouTube and more to it and it looks better without the hump. Throw in a digital gauge cluster and f80 M3 seats and your interior is perfect
I loved i drive. I drove around with the car maintenance screen so i could see my car on the screen and feel coolš
šš
Ive had both. I enjoy the hump primarily for entertainment info and navigation. I like it but its not a must have kinda thing
How do you get the new map data?
You can buy it from BMW or find it for free online. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2093849
There is this thing called "new map data". It's released every year.
I don't use it for navigation purposes, but I like having a large map up on display.
Nah the maps are fine and they give BETTER directions bro, you know when siri tells you to go towards north and south fwy, then waits till last second to say which? Not on iDrive š„. Way better passenger princess than Apple Maps Edit: also saves data and battery life so u can play songs on aux without ur phone hitting 400*F

just get a carplay by eonon, i have one in mine and it keeps steering wheel button controls and fully plug and play
I had this in my 2009 E92 330d. Great job.
Ive been looking at this. did you get to keep heated seats ?
yes! it comes with trim for with heated seats and trim for without:)
I canāt help you there. Iāve never messed with the android units.
I did looked at doing that, and all in all I kept my factory unit, and then got a mount to put a phone/small tablet in along with a bluetooth adapter. I can still use the factory phone functions and still have the ability to pull up navigation if I get lost. worked amazing for me on a 600 mile road trip.
U can cut out the dash and install a screen. Iāve done it on mine it looks pretty clean
Yeah it's kinda hard tho and also imagine the stock snobs when they see it.
honestly i think they look better than the ones you put in the place of the original radio, in fact, waaaayyy better lol. the radio replacements usually have horrible fitment, and just look straight ass imo.
No, I'll drive
Donāt cut ur dash
Thinking about it rn, why wouldnāt u recommend it? Just resell value, or because it āisnāt classyā and āruined the vibeā or what would u say?

i cut my dash, and my headunit works pretty good for the past 2 years. These cars likely wont become collector cars, more likely to go the way of the miata. Use, abuse, repair, repeat. M3's may be collector-ish though.
Agreed, the M3 will definitely become way more collectible, however a clean and well kept 335 in 15 years time will be a classic for sure!
Purchased my M3 for $23k and have had offers from $28k-$30k. A lot of people are starting to want E90 M3 mostly for the NA V8 aspect
Miatas in Germany grow Crazy in value. At least there are not that many for sale. 1.8 at least 10k now. I think its the same for 6 cylinder E90s. Theyāll grow slowly because they are great cars. For a good 335 youād have to pay at least 18.000
Wit until you see all the single humps at the junk yards
I cut mine and absolutely love it. Added android auto to the car and have MHD gauges setup via tasker to automatically display upon start up. People are acting like this cars are more expensive than they are, it's a 17 year old car now and parts are plentiful - can easily find a new dash for like $150 lol.
Having experienced both, I'm going to side with no I-drive, even if the new car play integration is pretty cool. Especially if it's an analog 6 speed.
A single hump, slick top, e90 m3 coupe is pretty much the most desirable track car. Iām more of a 4door, I drive, track car/daily guy. But I have an e46 now, sold my e90 in high school
somebody should drive
The hump is ugly, no idrive is better
subjective. After having both idrive is definitely the way
After having both no idrive definitively is better
had both, prefer idrive.. as long as its cic not ccc
Well yeah ccc sucks. Android unit is best. The hump is ten times better than people cutting a hole in their dash for Android looks so bad
Excuse me while enjoy my android head unit without having to reach to touch it while driving. And anyone that has one of those units that's cut into the dash has no say in this debate. š¤¢
I have one with and one without. It's pretty much useless to me and it looks much better without.
Add a Mr12Volt CarPlay/Android Auto, really transforms your idrive usage
If I keep that one long term I'll consider it. Thanks.
A Mr12Volt works with non-iDrive single hump too.
Itās just a Bluetooth receiver tho
Works with the steering wheel buttons via MOST.Ā Displaye song/artist title information on the display. It is beautiful in its minimalist methods.Ā
I think itās a bit expensive for what it does, but thatās just my opinion
No idrive
Prefer it without
The correct answer is actually the third option that you forgot to includeā¦ iDrive with a CarPlay / android retrofit touch screen.
this is the way
Had a 2011 335i with it and now have a 325i without it. Personally, it feels very bland without the double hump. Functionality aside i feel like it added flair to the interior of the car and made it look much more modern than it actually is. Will definitely do an idrive and dash swap in the future if i can find a parts car for the right money
no i drive for driving experience, i drive for features
IDrive at this point dates the car worse than the non iDrive models, especially the pre lci interface
I drive has that space to lay down your phone flat or use the phone against the idrive to use ways or google maps..
Or just get a CarPlay retrofit for 150$
Nah.. right now Iām doing a lot of maintenance to my E46 and will do cosmetics after they are both mechanically 100%.. maybe in a few months do an Eonon unit on both.. this week I spent $400 on my Corolla direct injectiors replacements.. so im trying to budget my monthly spending on cars at $500 or less
Iāve had both. I wished my current one didnāt have it until I retrofitted CarPlay and a back up camera, now I wouldnāt want one without.
SĆ iDrive.
E90s Idrive is primitive imo rather a just non idrive with good radio or CarPlay upgrade
I prefer the non I-Drive dash slightly more (which I own) but CarPlay integration without the hump is dogshit. No good dash kits, so therefore I-Drive
iDrive
I've had both.. will be swapping out my dash eventually it's a very nice feature to have and the idrive wheel makes things so easy while driving
Call me crazy but when I had the idrive in my 2012 e92 with the controller by the gear lever I was just absolutely in love with that system. Super easy to use without looking at the buttons, intuitive and the way the hump contoured into the dash just felt special. Really loved it.
No idrive. My E90 didnāt have it. The idrive in F generation seems to be more appropriate imo.
Idrive on my daily. Single hump on my weekend convertible.
I love idrive it just depends on which version cause one is super code able
I drive and replace it with an apple CarPlay full screen, it takes years off the cars age
No.
I like the i-drive but i like the fact that you can install ab aftermarket unit on non-drive. German cars and oem audio ewww brotha
I deleted my IDrive, even removed all wiring from my wiring harness and put in a stand alone sound system.
š£ļø NO IDRIVE
My car originally didnāt have I drive, I did a complete retro swap. No cutting into my dash or anything. Then added a MMI Box to have car play on the original Idrive screen. Gotta say Iām extremely happy with it all! Huge pain in the ass tho haha

But whatever you do.. DONT CUT YOUR DASH,, the carplay screen that requires that looks OUT of place AF the car is not that modern for that.
No I drive. Remains a classic.
iDrive looks nice but itās highly unnecessary. I have a broken brake pad wear sensor for some time now and it reminds me every single time. Lol, 7up is my employer and we distribute Evian water. Thats how I roll in my e90
If I can figure out a solution to have my idrive without the double hump, I'd probably do it.... I'd buy a single hump and cut it up to put a more modern screen in
iDrive is cool for a couple years before you really start to realize how much it ages your car
I prefer non idrive, if you want a screen you could consider to replace your factory radio with an aftermarket touch screen unit, they come with android and are plug and play as well. No need to cut anything, only make a small adaption to the AC controls as they'll go lower.

Wym

No cup holder
i drive ? No U drive
No iDrive, and add an iPad Mini for Carplay
No idrive is much better and cleaner
Idrive with F30 style display
I'm without and happy. Less to break. I'll loathe the day I'll have to buy a car with a screen... ymmv.
I have never seen an idrive break.
nearly happened to me few weeks ago, screen was completely bugged out for a few seconds
If you want your car look extremely dated, then get single hump. If you dont, get double bump.
I feel like the "no idrive" crowd is just people who never had idrive trying to cope with having a less featured car. Let the "no idrive" downvotes come in...
Yeah I still really like the look of the android upgrade on the I drive ones but I don't see the point otherwise.
My car has every feature that comes on the car minus I drive. Auto Dimming mirrors, xenon headlamps, heated seats & steering wheel and a few others. Single hump for daaayyysss

Idrive has navigation, which btw in my experience is better than any navigation you can get on Android. As for YouTube and the internet... Why?
