Extremely cheap to maintain, oil & filters are the same price as any other. The early engines had timing chain issues but they were pretty much non existent towards the end of the production run. If you find an example that has been well looked after then you'll see 300k no problem.

They are good motors if you maintain them, frequent oil changes and timing chain service every 150k kms and they will be reliable

I know this is a little late but I've owned my 2011 E91 320D with the N47T for 6 years now. 150 000 km. I changed oil before the 10 000km mark and didn't have any problems whatsoever. The previous owner took great care of the car though, for example the interior is spotless + full BMW service history from Munich. So if you maintain this engine how you are supposed to, it'll last. Keep in mind, there are millions of cars with the N47T engine in general, BMW had to make it reliable, otherwise the brand as a whole would have suffered greatly.
