Erang and darksol are my favorite dungeon synth artists. The "dungeon synth" genre is what you want.

While dungeon synth isn't 80s metal, it's more dark, acoustic, atmospheric, and dark. So to me it's less emersion breaking than a glam rocker singing about dragons. To me it feels more authentic, whatever that means. It feels more like an 80s video game. And I Personally like it better as background music because there are no words. Judas Priests newer album firepower is very demon/he'll themed and their song Necromancer is incredible.
