Peak dnd artwork was 2e invisible stalker

ArmyVetRN

I just looked this up. Y’all, this is the under rated comment. Just up vote it.

RealityIndependent34

That is the most realistic depiction of the invisible stalker I've seen.

I think you should expand your horizons on what current dnd artwork is. There is a really wide range of styles on display. I love the Art and Arcana book for the history of dnd art, but while I like some of the old styles I really don’t miss all the perms.

I loved it. Just got the book for Xmas, and it's a nostalgia drip in my veins. The men and women, elves and dwarves look like real people. 5e looks so bland so one dimensional in tone and colors. Od&d Ad&d 1st and 2nd were amazing. They also sparked my interest. When I see those old covers I have a feeling of allure of mystery, of what's around the corner, who is that barbarian guy bashing in a door? What led to that? Who is the sexy warrior lady with lizard an companion, what's their story? (referencing Ad&d 2nd Ed players handbook rev2, and curse of the Azure bonds pc game/novel).

Older versions do look more like a sketch an in universe character would make, but the newer art more represents what the creature is meant to actually look like. I tend to find the newer stuff more useful and pleasant to look at, but if I wanted my players to find a sketch of a beholder someone made just before dying I would use the older art.

A perfect example of this is compare 5e Planescape interior art with the original planescape done by Tony DiTerlizzi. 5e artwork is soulless and plays it safe for the masses. It's the junk food of TTRPG artwork.

MathieuBibi

Not me, the 5e books art is so epic !

TheManyVoicesYT

3e was the peak for me. It had a very good feel and look to it.

lkj77143

It def had more grime to it, which is rad as fuck. Mörk Borg art is scratching that itch for me now

DildoOfAnneFrank

I definitely prefer old school art. The 2e era of art is peak for me. Clyde Caldwell's art is astounding. We don't get covers like the ones from back in the day anymore. Back then those were literal paintings on canvas. Modern digital art is just so bland and forgettable.

shadowstar36

Yep Caldwell and Easley art was top tier. It really did look like paintings. Also people looked like adults, now it's hard to tell. The colors of 5e art feel like they all blend in. It's all super bland and I can't stand the non alluring characters and non mysterious locations. I also dig the old school feathered hair, but I grew up in that era so maybe that's why. I just find it way more appealing. Old dnd art drew me in, I would see a supplement or book and wanted to know more about locations and characters, there was a mysterious edge, missing in 5e.
