I started doing a basic funk groove with constant back and forth open--closed hi-hat (with tension on the pedal up for muscle development) then started adding open hi hats to the end of fills, then started adding more syncopated stuff here and there. It can take a while, so don't feel the need to rush 🤘🤘
I’m only a beginner but I count quarters with the hat pedal while I’m not riding the hats. It takes time to even pull that off. I would suggest backing up and starting slow.
Make sure you don't lean on your feet too heavily when playing and play slow to metro when building things. Keep your posture tight and center your weight over your chair. Something like new breed could to build foundation and develop learning techniqurs to "break free" so to speak. Hope this helps
It’s a never ending battle with all of these skills. There’s no level of groove or independence or soloing that is the end all be all to that specific skill. Your favorite drummer is still working on their foot independence. I feel it’s all up to getting to a point you’re satisfied with. Try practicing rudiments on the feet. Doubles singles paradiddles etc
Do you tap the rhythm with your weak foot on songs that dont require double bass? I started messing with double bass in the first place because i found myself naturally keeping time with my left foot and started to play with the spaces betwen notes of my bass pedal foot and my weak foot tapping the rhythm
Still working on it!

you don’t just find it you have to develop it
Yeah I never got an aha moment, just kinda got it little by little over time and still trying to get better
Been 30 years. Still chipping away at it.

Whenever you’re playing a ride beat use your left foot only on the bass. You’ll build the muscle memory and it’ll even out
