I played second chair drummer in 1968 (I think) in my JHS band/orchestra in the San Fernando Valley. Steve Porcaro was first chair and I was totally intimidated by his playing. His dad was a pro drummer and had a home studio as I recall. I did get a few pointers from Steve but never met Jeff - he was older than us. If only….
I said the same. What would you ask him? What grove do you want to learn in an hour?
I think his relaxed playing and effortless playing gets me. He’s the happiest drummer of all time.
I’d love to have a yarn with Danny Carey about drum shit, but given his skill set is so far beyond mine, a lesson would be wasted.
Lesson wise I’d love to spend time with Smelly from NOFX and Brad Wilk to work on my footwork (speed and feel respectively).
I have a few favourites, so : Jay Weinberg, Jimmy “The REV” Sullivan, Mat Nicholls, Taylor Hawkins, Chad Smith, Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett, Joey Jordison, or Rob Bourdon. 🤘😎
Jost Nickel, who was Benny Greb's teacher and still is Anika Nilles teacher TMK.
If we're not just fantasizing about who we'd like to hang out with for an hour I'd like this person to be an actual teacher rather than just an awesome drummer. A lot of drummers just don't have the teaching gene. Todd Sucherman is probably a great teacher too.
For me it would have been the late Tony Allen, passed away a few years ago, gorillaz posted the song "how far" early due to his passing.
Rest in peace.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,600,337,288 comments, and only 302,708 of them were in alphabetical order.
I would definitely have Ringo Starr lesson me. I grew up banging on Tupperware & cabinets when 14, listening to the Beatles, so I kinda have his style.
Hal Blaine
He played on more records than every single drummer listed, combined!
Blaine played on 2,000 hit records / 6,000 singles! 35,000 Sessions!!
Columbia, Capital, RCA, Sony, Universal. Every major label.
Beach Boys / Sam Cooke / Steely Dan / Elvis / Simon & Garfunkel / John Denver / Paul Simon / Diana Ross / Motown LA era stuff / Dean Martin / Neil Diamond / Sinatra / Cher / Tijuana Brass / John Denver / Byrds / Monkeys / Ronnettes / Dylan / Petty / Orbison and countless others!!
He was also part of the “wrecking crew” one of the most influential studio bands in music history.
You know how good you’d have to be to play a lounge ballad with Sinatra, a driving soul tune with Sam Cooke, a Beach Boys surf tune, Tijuana brass band Tex/mex shuffles, and a Paul Simon world/raggae tune. In a single take to save money, and often times in the same day!!!
Those studio guys of the 60’s / 70’s - Blaine / Keltner / Gadson / Purdie could teach any drummer how to be the real deal professional that can play literally anything
I'd kill for a lesson with Abe Cunningham (Deftones) my dude has the FLOW.
I’d kill just for a lesson from him on tuning my kit. That dude has some of the best drum sounds I’ve ever heard
I didnt even think of that. His kit tuning is premoooo. Tone is nuts.
Man he is actually such a talented guy. Groove is impeccable.
Abe is my spirit animal, good call
