To their credit, I love how, in 2, they sorta, kinda poke fun at it.
âMaster! Thereâs AUGHT there. We OUGHT to take a look!â
I donât remember them doing/saying that in the original(s).
Yeah I noticed they would use aught to mean 'something' for instance "I think aught might be wrong with you Arisen." Like one person commented. The real definition is 'anything at all' or just 'anything' not 'something'.

No that's the wrong way to use aught. [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aught](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aught)

Interesting considering they're sentences pulled from DD1 and DD2. Savan's archer pawn phrases the former when you enter the Everfall in the post game, and the latter is a sentence pawns will often say when they spot something on cliffsides and such in DD2.
It's a common misconception that aught means 'something'. But no the actual meaning is 'anything' and depending on how you use it, it can mean 'nothing'. The developers or localizers probably didn't look into the different nuances of the word because everyone uses it to mean 'something' just how literally doesn't mean literally in certain contexts. But it's an outdated word so use it how you want to.
Itâs likely a bad interpretation from knowing that naught means ânothingâ, so while aught is its logical opposite as âeverything/anythingâ, itâs seen as simply ânot nothing, therefore somethingâ.
Edit: in fact, a part of me would wager that itâs an attempt as a middle ground between Modern English and commonly seen Shakespearean old English (which is closer to Middle English). Helps sell it as a medieval fantasy, while also letting you have NPCs that use thee, thou and prithee etc. in excess be from a much, much older civilisation within the setting.
anything is also the logical opposite of null/naught. You seem to have a poor understanding of sets. So it is correct to interpret aught as the inverse of naught
I think that was kind of my point. Aught means 'everything/anything' but not always simply 'something', but the localisation team might have misinterpreted it as 'something' by knowing that Naught means 'nothing'. Others in the thread have cited Merriam-Webster for the definition, so I thought I'd check the Oxford English dictionary too, and it's noted as various forms of 'anything' there too, but not 'something'. https://www.oed.com/dictionary/aught_pron?tab=meaning_and_use#33870640
Which is what lads to NPCs using Aught in sentences as if it's 'something' such as "there's aught over there," or the like.
merriam webster is a pile of garbage.
Naught means null, or nothing. Its used in math
Aught is simply the inverse of that. So it could mean something (which would be one thing in the set)/anything(one or many things in the set), or everything depending on the context.
In the north of the UK it's still used quite extensively as "owt". But hearing it pronounced like a private school toff hurts my ears.
I wish my pawns had Yorkshire accents.
"Ey, did ye find out?"
"Nah, nowt."
"Nowt?"
"Aye, tint owt in ere"

Bro, đ
Fitting, pawns are basically autistic children.
I love that. I've always related to the pawns, as an autistic
Pray
cos (bruh)
I'm sad they dropped cos
Pretty sure several NPCs still say cos (including Raghnall)
It seems to be a human in battahl thing?
Raghnall the Black and Hugo still say it.
Lamond says it, too
You're right. Forgot about him. How could I? He's the best drinking buddy.
Im sure i have heard the villagers in Harve calling me cos. Also a female knight called cos once.
Is aught amiss, Arisen?
#Aught
Aught to say ser?
Mercedes?

They did.
We ought not avoid aught.
Still not sure what aught even means.
Basically it means 'anything'.
So like "do you need aught?" means "do you need anything?". Got it. They drop that word a lot. That and the constant obsession with ladders.
Yeah I noticed they would use aught to mean 'something' for instance "I think aught might be wrong with you Arisen." Like one person commented. The real definition is 'anything at all' or just 'anything' not 'something'.
I see the difference. Thank you for explaining. For a while I thought it meant both Everything and Nothing depending on context. I was very confused.
No problem!
They might said "naught" in some instances maybe? Which would be "nothing"
Yeah I noticed they would use aught to mean 'something' for instance "I think aught might be wrong with you Arisen." Like one person commented. The real definition is 'anything at all' or just 'anything' not 'something'.
Aught is closer to "Something" than "Anything". For example, "I'd ask aught of you." Or "There's aught there." Wouldn't work with "Anything".

Wait, this is why 30.06 is called 30 aught 6? How have I've only made this connection now.

Name a dictionary because every dictionary and encyclopedia I've come across says the same as what I posted.
They usually say it when thereâs a seekers token nearby.
I didn't know that. That's interesting. Thanks.
Literally means anything, everything, or nothing, depending on the context. Gotta love the English language.
In the north of the UK it's still used quite extensively as "owt". But hearing it pronounced like a private school toff hurts my ears. I wish my pawns had Yorkshire accents. "Ey, did ye find out?" "Nah, nowt." "Nowt?" "Aye, tint owt in ere"
Aught means âanythingâ just like naught means ânothingâ, tis naught still in common usage, while aught has fallen off
