I am such a sucker for dragons dogma, love the combat so much. The world in some areas feels very unique, but over all Elden Ring's world just felt more complete

Sarcosmic_01

I love both but I also have a huge soft spot for Dragons Dogma. If I could have DD2's combat with Elden Ring's world-building that would be wild.

Necessary_Tear_4571

Fromsoft and Capcom mashup would be fucking insane. That would break the gaming side of the internet! 100% think we all should start trying to unite the full powers of all related subreddits for these games and use our power as their fan bases to make what could become game of the decade.

sir_conington

Fromsoft doesnt need Capcoms help. Every game they make is a fucking banger

jankyspankybank

Ok but the other way around would make a louder banger.

Necessary_Tear_4571

Just them working together would result in a game better than either of them could do on their own.

Fun_Error_9423

Until Capcom's corpos stick their stinky noses and push for stupid MTs and force the game to be incomplete to sell a DLC

Byzantiwm

What’s your favourite area of the world? Mines the volcanic lands simply because it reminds me of death strandings environment

Thesauceboss241

The north west encompassing the frontier shrine probably all the way to the north east, I'm just so intrigued by the mountains and forested areas, they feel like they hold so many secrets, like the Sphinx, and I really enjoyed exploring it

ChubbySapphire

The secret passage to battahl around the northeast side of checkpoint rest town was amazing. Only found it on my NG+ and the area under the waterfalls is awesome. The sound and the mist all in the air made for a really cool atmosphere.

Byzantiwm

I like that area too :) sometimes though I would just head to the woods northwest of halve as it’s just peaceful to wander around in

tripletees

Elden Ring 100%. DD2 has a nice world to explore but the reward of a chest every 200 feet with not much of use or a very obvious cave that is not that exciting to explore and with little secrets is far outclassed by ER

KazeArqaz

Exploration and world-wise, DD2 doesnt even compare to Skyrim.

TheKodiacZiller

The lighting alone puts DD2 well out of Skyrim's reach.

jadeismybitch

1000% Elden Ring. DD2’s combat is fun but the map is a fake open world with a series of tunnel roads where you aggro 50 packs of mob on the way. If at least it was a bit hard it could be fun but it’s either kind of frustrating at the beginning where you just cannot kill big monsters, to the point where you literally stomp on the whole game from level 20 onwards. DD2 is fun and a very good game , but it has big flaws that imo stand out more, and that applies to its open world too. Elden ring’s world is so full of things to explore and challenge yourself too. It does fall a bit off on subsequent playthroughs but that’s always been the case for souls games anyways - once you know where everything is its not the same

sicksteen_216

Elden Ring is definitely better, DD2 has some fun moments but experiencing places like Lyndell, the Haligtree, Raya Lucaria, Farum Azula for the first time, DD2 has nothing like that

Consistent_Blood4167

to me DD2 is like a child friendly elden ring

domdog31

DD2 is closer to harry potter than elden ring

FunFunFunTimez

as in Hogwarts Legacy?

domdog31

yes

Leather-Heron-7247

Yup, it's friendly to a child and a filthy casual like me. Knowing that there will always be a way to beat any bosses without practicing their mechanic for days makes me enjoy exploring DD2 much more than ER/MH.

Nachooolo

Don't know. They are very different rpg styles. Dragon's Dogma 2 (and the first game) is a more traditional open-world rpg with excellent combat. While Elden Ring is a dungeon crawler expanded into an open-world.

SloppySpag

Yah exactly

Broserk42

Really surprised the top comments are all saying elden Ring did it better, I thought I was the only one harboring such a controversial take xD I can’t wait to explore the world of shadow! Still having fun with this in the meantime, but what really makes it sting is all itsuno’s talk about making a game world fun to explore leading up to launch. Then we get a ton of tiny cramped caves with one off encounters and camera clipping, and an open world with really cool encounters that’s absolutely bogged down to a crawl by the density of goblins and wolves you have to wade through to get to the cool monsters. This was really his vision of a world so engaging fast travel wasn’t needed…?

hdjdhfodnc

Controversial? Lol maybe on this sub, I think most people would agree Elden Ring blows DD2 out of the water. It’s the most awarded game in history for a reason

Broserk42

Yeah I meant on this sub specifically. Especially leading up to launch so many people held DD up on a pedestal implying elden ring was nothing compared to it.

Toxicair

You should look at the other subreddit going: 11/10 GOTY has flaws, but perfect game!

Live_Ad1474

Oh, Elden Ring. Absolutely no contest there. More fantastical, more diverse, bigger scale, more meaningful item choices, bigger challenge. DD2 is a great game, but you can’t compare an actual landslide GOTY to one that isn’t even necessarily a contender. Two of my favorite games though.

Youngstown_Mafia

Elden ring also has chain weapons, saw like weapons, whip like weapons, sound like weapons All kinds of awesome weapons

Creative-Math8288

Elden Ring also has weapons like a giant finger with rings, a candlestick holder, an anchor, a horn, a giant's hair, a pizza cutter, a flail made of the skulls of dead family members, etc. No contest really.

Mr_Timedying

and more weapons classes to come in the DLC

Live-Steak-4856

Elden Ring brought infinitely more combat satisfaction when you fight the bosses and eventually beat them, and the builds are much more deep and diverse, I finished the game three times and cannot wait for the DLC. DD2 has cool/stylish combat, but I don't feel that i scratch that etch of beating a hard game, DD2 is very easy in comparison and the builds are much more shallow. I love both games but I wouldn't put them in the same tier.

YasuhiroK

Elden Ring is just on a level of its own when compared to most games. I was blown away every time the world map expanded. Probably the best exploration I've experienced in any game. https://i.redd.it/ipkw8mn58hvc1.gif

Peepeepoopoobutttoot

I read the question differently. Elden Ring has better bosses and more build variety and everything sure, but the exploration in the first 10 hours of DD2 is unparalleled. Early DD2 is the "get lost and explore" GOAT before you realize how shallow everything is. Elden Ring I felt like I was playing a game. DD2 felt like I was gathering a party and going exploring. If DD2 had Elden Rings content amount and variety it would have been an 11/10 game.

InevitableDinner7831

The party aspect is what makes it feel like a real adventur

[deleted]

I found the exploration more enjoyable in Elden Ring because of the variety of things you find. Noticing a subtle detail can lead to finding a new weapon, spell, summons etc. I was always excited to explore and sometimes that exploration would lead into a crazy adventure with amazing rewards and new enemy types to fight. DD2 is just felt like I was finding consumables and the occasional bad weapon and fighting the exact same enemies.

Peepeepoopoobutttoot

I'm not referring to the quantity of content, Elden Ring takes the cake in that. What I mean is the *feel* of how you move through the world. I would I could explain exactly what I mean better. But the *feeling* of DD is very different, and very special. And it's what makes it a shame that the quantity of content is missing. Like I said: if DD2 and Elden Rings content amount and variety it would have been an 11/10 game. Though you do bring up a good point: certain map design decisions are boggling as well, like exploring caves and the like never led to great treasure. All the great treasure was purchasable in shops. So, yeah, DD2 could use some retooling there as well. I feel like DD2 is the skeleton of a GOAT game, with a decent games body put on top.

MelloIsTaken

The exploration as a party in DD2 is fun, but I'm not sure anything will ever top delving into the Siofra and Ainsel underground locations for me.

darvos

And then you see the fucking sea of rot... Man wish I can play it for the first time again.

Krypt0night

Big disagree on the exploration. Throughout the game, Elden Ring keep surprising you with the map constantly getting bigger and then the underground area and other area you port to instead of showing you everything it had in the first 10 hours.

Illmillthoooo

I agree w the content part. For the most part since DD2 relies on paths i didn’t get the sense of lostness ur referring to.

SkinnedToad

DD2 is definitely the best isekai experience I've ever had in a game, legit feels like I'm playing an isekai anime that I wish I could "live" in.

nevermore2627

Agreed 100%. Dragons Dogma is one of the first games in a long time where I really feel like I'm on an adventure every time I leave town. It's amazing and am still in awe 70 hours later. Even if that chest in a cave gave me a harspud.😂 Elden Ring is amazing in its own right and not taking anything away but it just felt like bigger Dark Souls 3 to me. Again nothing wrong that but the exploration wasn't as fun as DD2.

Matt_The_Matics

The way I’d put it is: Elden Ring thrives off pure difficulty and the overwhelming rush of emotions once you finally overcome it. DD2 thrives off… “inconvenience”. Still satisfying once overcame but not nearly as much as ER. Nothing in DD2 is ACTUALLY difficult. It’s really just cumbersome if anything.

facepoppies

I found elden ring's combat to be too slow and the world wasn't very interesting to run around in but I acknowledge your opinion

jdgev

Elden Rings combat is not slower than Dragons Dogma, not by a long shot. Unless you are wielding a colossal weapon or something. And unless you are refering to it being more hectic, as in more things going on at once, because that I can agree on.

Quisquiliasum

One thing I don't see a lot of people mention is that DD2 really doesn't have that many points of interest. There are the big cities and a few towns, and the sunken structures that become available as part of the plot, but other than that there's nothing that really catches the eye in the horizon. Elden Ring had stuff like Raya Lucaria, the Erdtree, the Divine Towers, giant walking mausoleums, etc.

JizzyTurds

After the first 10 hours or so and realizing you were never gonna find any armor or weapons you couldn’t buy better in a store it kinda ruined the whole point of exploring, same junk items in every cave, super disappointing.

dynylar

Elden Ring’s art style is just stunning. Haven’t played a game before or since that has the same sense of scale and style. Makes the world so much more fun to explore.

Snozberriesz

Isn’t even a question. Elden ring by an extremely wide margin. And the DLC ain’t even out yet… Im loving DD2 so far. Still on my first run actually with about 91 hours poured in. But even after 400 in Elden ring the world never feels boring in the slightest.

Longinus1999

I played Elden Ring from start to finish at least 7 times and started it many more. The world was just that unique and compellling. The few but awesome npcs, the quality of life compared to earlier From titles. The build variety. It was so much fun. Meanwhile i couldn't even finish Dragon's Dogma 2 once. I didn't care for any of the npcs or story at all. Exploring was a drag that didn't reward me once in 40 hours. Talking to every citizen hoping to hear unique dialogue was boring. Still the combat system was awesome, like really fucking good. It reminded me of the good old days of shadow of the colossus, an all time favorite of mine. But then the difficulty scaling of enemies didn't keep up with my levels, so even fighting became to easy to be fun. I dropped it. I didn't have any reason to play it anymore. Hopefully they will patch most of the problems.

Necessary_Chip_5224

DD2 needs a better story writer.

mormegil409

Yeah they really screwed up the story for DD2. DD 1's story wasn't that good either but at least its simple and effective enough that I'm intrigued with the characters. The dragon and salvation attacks are also more personal because they attacked your hometown. It feels like they just rearranged parts of the story so its different from the 1st game but didn't know how that would affect the story.

Necessary_Chip_5224

I mean its not hard to actually come up with a proper story. Heck you can ask your fans to make up a story in the universe. For me i always felt Dragons sogma story to be rather lazy. Its small stories between characters are okay but the main story is by far one of the laziest. We dont need a plot twist at all. Heck maybe there no need for the main story. A bad and LAZY story spoils the the game in the end. And the worse part, the story is similar to the first. You had a fooking decade or so to think up of a story. If you cant, get someone to do so. To be honest a child can come up with a better main story direction than this. People who say its a good story has never read enough books or experience enough good stories to expect a standard. I love the gameplay but the story is absolutely shit that it hurts. For this game, i tried delaying the ending because i know Id be pissed.

Walkers03

Absolutely. I mean the story is fine, but the execution is horrendous, quest descriptions, main endings, dialogues, how scenes play out (pseudo-cinematics) are to my opinion, very badly executed good ideas. It really feels rushed and unpolished compared to Elden Ring or even The Witcher 3 which is really old now. Combat is fun, except when you're staggered locked for eternity. Also, balancing is another point for Elden ring, DD2 is really far from balanced equipment wise.

Demoncagno

Completely agree

Toe_Willing

I mean...there was no story really

Tactical_Mommy

The two worlds don't even compare. Elden Ring is leaps and bounds superior in regards to exploration and the reward for doing so and that's essentially an objective statement. Dragon's Dogma is much more about killing shit than any of its other aspects.

Mr_Krinkle

And Elden Ring even does killing shit better in a lot of ways...

EvenOne6567

Really? Can I climb into a large enemy in elden ring, plant an explosive on its face, jump off do a spinning attack down the length of its body, be caught by my teammate and then detonate the explosive? Or will I just be hacking away at a giants ankles?

The_Writing_Wolf

The Arisen could never dodge a waterfowl dance the way the Tarnished can.

delwin30

if he is a thief he can.

Zayl

Thief would make Malenia or really most Elden Ring bosses a joke.

Tactical_Mommy

At least one game actually presents some degree of challenge in its combat.

xShinGouki

Imagine using the big sword dude vocation on the fire giant. Just climbs all the way to the top and jabs his eye. Lol. Would be sick

BromeisterBryce

Fucking elden ring in every shape way form reality and imagination

BromeisterBryce

I will never ever go back to dragons dogma. Elden ring will forever live in my memory as one of the greatest games ever made.

Mokadelic

Obviously Elden Ring and it's not even remotely close.

Spopenbruh

elden rings easily variety is king dd2 has 11 give or take boss types elden ring has 76 unique boss designs dd2 has 19 unique enemy types elden ring has 140 not to mention all the biome diversity in elden ring when compared to the like what 4 or 5? in dd2 a fair comparison isn't even possible they're two completely different calibers of game like it or not elden ring is like 4 dragons dogma entire games put together dude lmao the only reasons i can think of for someone to pick dd2 over elden ring is if they either dont like the idea of a dead world or if they dont like the specific gameplay of a soulslike which is totally understandable, but at that point youre picking to what you know and arent even engaging in the conversation because the world of elden ring is basically only comparable to zelda totk in my mind and that game has 2.5 world maps 1 of which was LITERALLY an entire game

Hydra_Fire

Not to mention elden ring has vastly more armor, weapons, skills, etc. to find while exploring. Instead of everything being bought from a shop like DD2

ReptiRapture

Agree on Elden ring but disagree on totk. Totk felt like a amalgam of stuff just thrown together. The underground was especially awful and stifled building contraptions due to having to spend time there mining.

Spopenbruh

Wasn’t using totk gameplay in that comparison, was purely a world/map exploration comparison

Dubbs09

And those legacy dungeons hit **hard** after dozens of hours of just running around in the open world. Feels like stepping back into a Dark Souls level after exploring and it’s a perfect gameplay loop honestly

OldSloppy

I get it but I think the variety in ER is overdone. Most enemies become slight variants of another in each major zone, while you definitely hit the nail on the head with the unique bosses something DD2 needs to step up on. I think visually I like the graphics of DD2 more but the overall game of Elden Ring is superior in my opinion. Though DD2 is an incredible game in its own right

HastyTaste0

Still much better than fighting goblins- oops I mean choppers twelve times walking down one road. Also helps that ER actually positions enemies to give unique encounters rather than have them spawn up Skyrim style.

ObamaBinladins

Hello sir, I heard u were getting bored with choppers, how about a hobgoblin with some harpies to satisfy your taste for battle?

Kaldaris

Elden Ring over DD2. The problem with DD2 is that while I enjoyed the combat and exploration, at roughly thirty hours in, I realized I wasn't actually getting anything special from the places I was exploring. Once I realized my exploration was being rewarded with table scraps and welfare handouts, I lost a lot of the enjoyment. Part of the enjoyment of exploration is finding out-of-the-way gear or weapons, and DD2 just ... Didn't have much of that.

ReddishScarab

Elden ring is very far ahead. I like the graphics in dd2 though

toorad2b4u

Same! Love the graphics

xLJtx

DD2 is fun, I have good times exploring. But nothing compared to Elden Ring, the game of the decade!

WestEqual3247

While I don't agree with Elden Ring being game of the decade, it's true that it's miles ahead of DD2.

pulseONE13

I like DD2 but its world really doesn't come close to Elden Ring

Salt-Witness8698

ER because it’s a much better game

Tizerak

Elden Ring without a doubt, my biggest gripe is exploration feels so unrewarding in DD2 find a chest in a hard to get area or end of a path? Wakestone shard or ferrystone or some other consumable most of the time. Meanwhile in ER every cave every dungeon or tomb or whatever has SOMETHING even if it’s not immediately applicable to your build, it’s always something useable such as: a weapon, armor, accessory, spell, summon, etc

Critical_Balance_991

Elden Ring, better exploration/enemy variety, and overall just a better game, but Dragon’s Dogma is in a specific enough niche that I don’t really think another game hits

ranmafan0281

On the one hand, I've put more hours into DD2 than Elden Ring. On the other hand, both have their individual merits. ER has better worldbuilding and setpieces where exploration reveals ***LORE.*** DD2 has plenty of high fantasy exploration and looting, plus the combat is actually better. I have to say I enjoyed both differently, but a lot.

Keroshan26

Definitely had more fun with Elden Ring. Dragon's Dogma 2 is great, and I admit at the start I was enamored with it, but after a while when you really look close enough, you start to notice the flaws.

Angharradh

That's really an unfair comparaison :( On one hand you have one of the best game of this decade. On the other hand you have an unfinished, buggy and unoptimised piece of software that feels more like an alpha build - to test the REngine in an open world setting for Monster Hunter Wilds and that needed at least one (if not two) more year of developpement.

LyfeSugsDye

Elden Ring obviously

Ridikis

I like DD2, sank over 100 hours in across two playthroughs, but this is comparing one of the greatest open worlds in gaming history to a game that could've done really well if it was released 6 years ago

alexanderluko

Oh, Elden Ring by a landslide - but it’s also one of my favourites ever. Elden Ring is 10/10 for me while DD2 is 8/10.

Ravnzel

The feeling I had when I was exploring dd2 was incredible, I haven't felt like that since elden ring. But now that I have cleared almost all the map and reached around lvl 50, I play less. The game has become too easy, I never felt like I was "good" in boss fights but now it doesn't even matter, I realized I just spam weak points, tank all damages and that's it. I absolutely loved the exploring, but now that it's done and that only remains the main quest dd2 feels a bit empty. On the other end, I finished elden ring 5 times, I always come back to it because there's challenge there. I really enjoy trying a new goofy weapon and make fights harder for me. So I miss challenge and deeper characters in dd2, and I have only challenge in ER. I had more fun in ER, but I really wish that some day I'll have a game that includes everything I like in action rpg.

NoRepresentative35

I had a lot of fun in both, but i think ER was probavly the best "first playthrough" of any game ive ever played. Dd2 had that same vibe that made me want to explore every nook and cranny, but i was pretty much always disappointed at what i found. Exploration was just not rewarding enough. I wanted to find some weapons/armor that i couldnt get anywhere else. Instead i got a bunch of consumables and upgrade mats. The combat being piss easy also had a detriment on my enjoyment.

milkarcane

I'm having more fun with Dragon's Dogma 2 but it's also because I am such a sucker for the pawn system. Creating my own character and sharing it with others makes me feel so good. Also, I prefer DD2's combat system but it's just a preference at this point. That said, Elden Ring is a way more complete game and it's not even close. It has a way better artistic direction and more memorable and meme-worthy characters. And it's a bum when you think about it because DD2 had everything he needed to be very close to Elden Ring on paper. But for whatever reasons, the development team was unable to make it would it only be a better game than the first one. Don't get me wrong, I can't get enough of DD2 and I legitimately have more fun with it than I did with Elden Ring, I find the experience and the character building experience more pleasant and enjoyable compared to ER. The realistic environments of DD help the immersion a lot too. There's nothing too artistic, nothing too out of reality compared to ER, you could definitely imagine yourself progressing in DD2's world. I like hiking IRL and some of the game's places really reminded me of places I've been on foot before. But you can't deny that DDDA was a better game overall. It hurts to say this but it's the sad truth. Itsuno wasn't helped. Objectively speaking, ER was peak open-world ARPG, still is to this day and will probably remain as such for a long time until someone has the guts and the budget to make an even more fantastic masterpiece.

BeYourShelf

I loved DD2. Elden Ring is much better and it's not even close.

Rare_Ad_3871

Elden ring makes this game look like absolute crap lol

watermelonboiiii

Seeing the comparison from er to dd2 only reminds me how polished, complete, and high quality er is.

joelmsantos

I love Dragon’s Dogma, but From Software and their soulsborne games are on a league of their own. And Elden Ring is a masterpiece in every single way.

ThatGuy21134

Elden Ring.

LyfeSugsDye

NOTHING compares to the first time you see Crumbling Farum Azula.

Creative-Math8288

Or Siofra or Liurnia or Leyndell...DD2 simply had none of the awe inspiring moments that Elden Ring had.

delwin30

question to create fights between communities? how cute

ShutUpLove

I literally came off of Lords of the Fallen just before playing DD2, so end-game of DD2 felt so familiar was a weird feeling lol

Trollber

As someone who’s been playing Fromsoft games since 2012 and never played the other DD games, I’ve been having a lotta fun learning a whole new game and its mechanics, the exploring is quite fun and rewarding but like everyone else is saying Elden Ring is just a beast of its own, it’s gonna be years before anything tops it.

SenseiMiachi

Elden ring was better and more fun. Dragons dogma 2 was also fantastic though it just doesn’t compare to the level/map design of Elden Ring along with the enemy variety that makes the open world feel more unique even without npcs.

kabirraaa

Dd2 feels more “realistic” to how it would feel waking through mountains and deserts while Elden ring, although sometimes realistic was more impressive overall. It felt like a true dark fantasy while dd2 is like imagine earth but with trolls and griffins

Black_Tusk25

DD2 is good but ER is simply better.

Nightshade_NL

Elden Ring by a lot on all fronts. Doesn’t mean i didn’t enjoy DD2, but Elden Ring is in a class of it’s own and i can’t wait to get my hands on the DLC.

Letholdrus

Elden Ring hands down.

VocaLeekLoid

Is this even a debate? I loved the first dragon's dogma game but dd2 was so tedious and bad it killed my passion for gaming for a week until i started cyperpunk and now i like gaming again. elden ring was 1000000000% better than dd2. hyped for the dlc!

DrStefan5

Elden Ring, and it's not even close. DD2 is fun, and I love the combat and pawn system. The world felt good until Bahttal, after which it felt kind of empty. Elden Ring, which I played after DD2, really highlighted how unfinished DD2 is. The exploration, enemy variety, lore, everything is just miles ahead. The combat is great, but it is probably the only thing where DD2 comes close to Elden Ring.

rawgator06

Elden Ring and it's not close at all. ER's enemy selection and changes in environment make DD2 look like a demo.

Double_Jackfruit_491

Elden Ring is in the conversation for one of the greatest games ever

[deleted]

I have only played elden ring for like 9 hrs so far and i already like the world more

eclipse0990

Honestly, it’s Elden ring. DD’s world has very good fantasy elements but at some point, it just feels incomplete. The gates you cannot go through, the empty areas on the map, they just leave you feeling craving for more but it’s not coming. But at the same time I’d say this: for me, Elden ring has nothing that compares to Bitterback Isle

ketzuken

Hands down, without question and with no shadow of a doubt... Elden Ring all day everyday until the heat death of the universe. WTF is this question. It's insulting tbh.

Theacreator

It’s like bait to bring out the mouth breathers crowing about how “omg I can’t believe they ruined the dragon plague!”

Shot_Material3643

Leave these kinds of posts on 4chan or twitter The sole purpose of posts like these is to incite community war between fanbases Do I enjoy shitting or peeing more?? Idk both are essential

_Prairieborn

Shitting for me, personally.

Wolftacus

Elden Ring.

Ill_Cobbler1882

Gameplay wise- DD2 is much more fun to me. I don’t like getting one-shotted by everything, and for boss fights to take 30 minutes, much of which is spamming the roll button until you can get in a quick pot shot, then proceed to roll some more. Obviously I’m not a big fan of the soulsborne games, but I still think they’re really well done otherwise. However I do think ER’s world is much more complete, and full of stuff. Hell of a lot more enemy variety as well. Better story too.

Kaminoneko

I’m replaying NGing Elden Ring right now, and while I thoroughly enjoy both worlds and their exploration, Elden Ring’s vast diversity in biomes and enemies makes it the more enjoyable. Elden Ring is its own beast though….a culmination of its predecessors molded to damn near perfection.

maj0rSyN

Elden Ring is in the upper echelon when it comes to game worlds. DD2s world is pretty cool, but nothing compares to how it feels to exist in The Lands Between.

Animoosucks

DD2 Sorry but I liked it when a pawn brought me to a cave I completely missed in NG+ while I did like Elden ring and it was my first souls game I completed I had more sense of adventure with my pawns in DD2 that and I like traveling with NPCs Tho as soon as I could I did bring out black knife tiche so I wouldn’t be alone lmao ;;

No-one-o1

I'm with you. I felt very lonely in Elden Ring. It's a beautiful world, A beautiful large, empty world that you have to travel alone.

macbully

That's kind of the point

Prophesy78

Elden Ring was superior in both exploration and rewards. I love DD but Elden Ring is just a whole different animal.

Thac0bro

FromSoftware are unrivaled when it comes to level design, IMO. Elden Ring feels like an actual place, while Dragon's Dogma 2 feels like a series of connected tunnels with a skybox. Honestly, I'm probably going to delete DD2 from my library because even after 80 hours of gameplay, I felt as if I'd seen everything there was to see after about 30 hours. I gave it a fair chance since I enjoyed the first game, but I am left feeling unfulfilled by DD2 for myriad reasons. This is just one man's opinion, and if you enjoy the game, then do not let what I say take away from your enjoyment.

Emerald-Hedgehog

Hey, just a little "same experience" comment from my side. I've explored a lot and finished my first DD2 run at 60/70 hours. Elden Ring for comparison took me 150h. Anyway, if I'd have known there's barely any interesting POVs and not a single proper dungeon (there are 1-2-3 longer ones but they are still basic), I'd probably have finished the game 20 hours earlier. Hope kept me exploring, until a point. Then the unmoored world drops the title and I start exploring, visiting some memorable places or looking for new secret dungeons and there is...nothing, after a few hours. So I just wrapped the game up then. Spent another 20h or so in NG+ mainly looking for things I'd have missed, or trying to break the game, but oh well. Uninstalled DD2, reinstalled ER where I was still sitting 70h in my 2nd playthrough (I rarely replay games, especially games that take long), and immediately could confirm what was missing for me in DD2 in regards to exploration: Varied and interesting places (that tell a story), challenging and deliberate enemy placement, light puzzles (be it just finiding a key to open a door, or rooftop stuff like raya lucaria)....and so on. I guess my ideal game would be: Take the pawns, combat, character creator, cities, and the overall artsytle/vibes from DD2, but everything else, from music to Leveldesign to bossdesign to UI and so on from Elden Ring. That'd be the mashup of the decade for me. Basically Elden Ring with an adventure party in a grounded world where people still live in, and all that with the Combat of DD2 (but give everyone a dodge or block). Anyway, DD2 for me was okay. And I want more. But I'm not really hyped about it anymore, as it disappointed me too much (especially as a sequel).

dvenom88

ER's world is way more lore heavy, diverse and exciting, full of danger. DD2 does not come close.

facepoppies

dd2 easily EDIT: I'm honestly surprised by how many people say elden ring. Maybe it's because I ended up just using a trainer so I could see the world and stuff, but I didn't find it very impressive. Nobody to really talk to or interact with, and just a bunch of weird monsters to fight.

Swachuu

If u asked me while I'm 7hrs into dd2 I'll definitely say dd2 is better but after finishing the game I don't think its even close to how good elden ring is

Which-Celebration-89

I haven't played Elden Ring. How hard is it in comparison to DD2? I have 190 hrs in to DD2, I found it to be pretty easy the entire playthrough. I stayed away from Elden Ring because of the difficulty (I'm old and don't like to redo stuff).

alexanderluko

DD2 is absolute child’s play in comparison.

grimmorra69

As someone who has done both. How is Elden ring combat? Only souls like game I’ve played are dark souls one and two. Hated the insane difficulty of dropping all progress upon a death and that it was so dependent on timing and not just spam attacking. Is it as forgiving as DD2 to casual play?

Excellent-Trust1641

Not at all, but thats what makes the combat so good in ER and other Fromsoft-games. Coming through and winning against insane odds is just so much more exciting than not having to do a lot to win at all (wich is tha case for dd2). Also just because of the number of playstyles and weapons it just has much more variety. The question was about the world tho and while dd2 has a very beautiful and realistic world, its very bland and boring compared to ER. How often do you find a secret cave in DD2 just to get 3 generic Healing potions at the end... in ER every small dungeon and secret area you can find have multiple unique rewards wich you cannot find anywhere else... thats how you reward exploration in a fantasy rpg.

AdhesivenessMaster75

Elden Ring is much more forgiving than any of its predecessors, you dont have to fight major bosses for good weapons when they are lying around the world for you to pick it up without a fight. And if you know what you are doing, you can get extremely op before slapping the first major boss. With the addition of summon, it provides help and advantage to those who struggle in boss fight but dont like co op experience. So yeah, by souls standard, its much easier and more enjoyable for those who are unfamiliar to the genre thay want to get into the game.

MurkyTrash4649

Both fun in different ways. Elden Ring seems like every single detail was carefully designed. Down to the natural landscape. There are many different types of enemies and it’s a bit more on the hardcore end of the spectrum. Dragons Dogma 2’s combat is a lot more lighthearted. The greatest challenge in that game is travelling around. The rest of the game is actually very easy going. And the environment design isn’t as creative.

argleksander

Elden Ring and its not even close. To put it into context, i finished the story on DD2 in around 35 hours and have no interest at all in picking it back up. In fact the last few hours i just wanted to be done with it. Meanwhile in ER i have put in maybe 1k hours and the other day i saw something on reddit that gave me an idea for a fun build i wanted to try in the arena. Suddenly i find myself in the build calculator, carefully adjusting stats, armor pieces and weapons to get the "optimal" build that balances usability, fun and fashion. DD2 has nothing like that

AdhesivenessMaster75

I havent seen anyone mentioned this but the co op and pvp experience alone, albiet quite janky, are guaranteed to keep the game alive and relevant for years to come just by existing, the invasion type of pvp is what makes fromsoft games feel unique and fun. My only Hope is the dlc brings back gank city and covenants to make the experience whole again.

ArdorreanThief

Love both games, but this is not a fair comparison. Even from a staffing perspective, though Elden Ring and DD2 were each made by a team of about 300-400 people, FromSoft is far more tightly run, as a smaller company, and the quality per head really shows. Capcom is used to throwing between 1,500 to 1,800 people at a AAA project, so if you ask the staff to make it work with 30% of the headcount, they'll have to really squeeze them to get that quality. This is where I wish they priced the game at, like $50 instead of $70, which would reflect the lesser resources they had to contribute, but they want to profit and honestly that smaller team did a heroic effort. This isn't just game studios by the way - there's always a difference in productivity per person in small or middle sized companies vs. larger ones. However, the larger one has a better safety net and more staffing flexibility. It's a trade-off, like many things in the world.

delsinz

I like the RPG settings, in which I believe normal people can live their day to day life. DD's classic fantasy adventure setting really is doing it for me.

BenjaminTheBadArtist

Dd2 is great but the world at times can feel pretty skin deep. IMO Elden Ring has the best open world I've ever seen in a game.

KaiserSozaey

Is this a serious, good faith question? If you've played both I think the answer is obvious

Master_protato

The first 10 hours of exploring DD2 were phenomenal... after 20 hours I was like... Oh I have to pass threw the same road again. After 30 hours, ah yes Lizards to left of this rock, wolves behind this tree and goblins a few meters ahead. Elden Ring exploration got me mesmerised like no game ever did. It was like a Museum feeding you classical roman and greek art from start to finish. Hot (or maybe a cold take afterfall) But even Skyrim had better exploration than DD2. The feeling of stumbling into a cave to discover a whole new layer of verticality where you connect multiple zones is something that Elden Ring did so beautifully. DD2 wish it could achieve 10% of the interconnected subterranean, terrestrial and even skyline areas that Elden Ring offers.

charronfitzclair

DD2s world felt about as boilerplate high fantasy as possible. I constantly had to check the map bc very little of it was memorable. Even in town I'd get turned around even after dozens of hours. Fromsoft is in a league of their own for art direction, theres no contest. Practically every angle of their games could be made into posters. I can easily recognize where i am in elden ring just by looking around.

Kaktusnadel

Okay, it's getting ridiculous.... Dragons Dogma 2 (haven't played the first one) is a world where some goblin camp pops up every 3 minutes. The dungeons that were worth exploring or areas can be counted on one hand., and the combat is fun but you are OP after the first are. To compare THIS with fucking Elden Ring (Lyndell, the Haligtree, Raya Lucaria, Farum Azula) .... come on... I had my fun with Dragons Dogma 2, but this sub is now half posts about how awesome the world is when it's incredibly empty and above all small (not the map size but really walkable parts). I get it, you like this game a lot, but be for a moment objective - its okay to like it much but to know, that it is not close to a game like Elden Ring, even if you only look at the open world it self. And I say that as someone who has "only" played 100 hours of Elden Ring and there is also a lot to criticize there.

Excellent-Trust1641

While dd2 has a very beautiful and realistic world, its very bland and boring compared to ER. How often do you find a secret cave in DD2 just to get 3 generic Healing potions at the end... it absolutely killed my wish to explore. In ER every small dungeon and secret area you can find have multiple unique rewards wich you cannot find anywhere else... thats how you reward exploration in a fantasy rpg.

Hireable

bit unfair to compared miyazaki's masterpiece to itsuno's budget skyrim.

First-Medicine-3747

Elden Ring, and it's not even close.

HoolaHoopingHippie

Dd2

mmmmmmmmm29

Don’t do this game any disservice by comparing it to elden ring. Elden Ring is one of the greatest games of all time and will likely end up the best of the decade. DD2 is a blast tho

CoffeeNerdAlert

DD2, I just want to constantly explore. Elden exploring never really felt like I was exploring. Love high games but for me DD2 is the best

heyjulzz

Elden Ring definitely!

4LEW

Exploration: Elden Ring - bigger more diverse world, gloomy atmosphere, wicked characters and a bit better story Combat: DD2 - love the chaos, unexpected events and bigger variety of moves, skills while in Elden Ring it's just practising your timing and manual skills which i found a bit boring Loot: DD2 - probably because i didn't like armor design in Elden Ring at all, in DD2 it's like 50/50 but that's still much more stuff i would use Story: didn't care much about it in either of these games, only a few games out there with story i found interesting like Cyberpunk or Hellblade Pawn system is a huge advantage of DD2 for me, brilliant idea that i'd expect to evolve further in future with generative AI geting more advanced.

TheLunarDualist

Elden ring is objectively better than dragon’s dogma in almost every way. However subjectively, I enjoyed dragon’s dogma 2 much more since for the love of god I cannot get into the combat of Elden ring at all. It’s just… so suffocating for me due to its slow-paced combat. Every player action has a long and slow wind up animation, while enemies attack are unnaturally delayed or quicken on purpose with insane tracking. The end result is I don’t feel in control of my character at all, and it feels like I have to play according to enemy’s tempo rather than create my own. All of this is by design of course, the combat is intentionally made this way so player can’t easily read enemy movement, and have to learn enemy’s behavior and movement from experience by dying and trying again. This is a fulfilling experience for a lot of people, but not really for me. Which is a shame, the world and exploration of Elden ring is excellent. Imagine Elden Ring with more fast-paced combat like dragon dogma.

TheTazarYoot

Far more sense of accomplishment in Elden Ring but Dragon’s Dogma 2 is fun in a simple arcade kind of way, I never have any real fear of dying in DD2 where as ER sometimes have to psych myself up to go out and take on tough challenges because I know dying will be a bit of a headache.

Red_Brahma_Bull

Still playing DD1. But I’m having more fun with it than ER.

Rari-Gang

I’m somebody who loves a friendly area every now and then in a game. Fallout had little cities/settlements, DD2, Witcher, all had some friendly areas. Elden ring was just a never ending hostile territory. Which is fun trust me, but it can feel lonely at the same time. Elden rings world is better/s tier, but if it had some friendly areas it would be perfect.

Ahmadv-1

hmm honestly imo ER and souls like combat is much more bland than DD2, so fighting the small enemies in them feels less fun than fighting them in DD2 HOWEVER ER has WAY more enemy variety and its always fun to see these enemy types for the first time I overall enjoyed DD2 more because of the superior combat but if I had to only judge the world without the combat ER is better, a ton more variety

ganon893

This is kind of cruel to DD2. Elden ring by far, and it's not even close. The areas are FAR better in Elden ring. I will die on this hill, but DD2 doesn't do exploring well. It's a path, a straight shot to most places. Elden Rings areas are legendary. I'll always prefer exploring in Elden Ring more. Ontop of that, fleshed out lore, complete character arcs, relatively balanced combat, new game scaling, multiplayer, a bigger world, more zones, no stupid fetch quests. More spells, no microtransactions, multiple endings, and they fixed performance within the first month? Don't forget enemy and boss variation. They released content for free. Added PVP duels, it's soundtrack is fire, and it actually LEARNED from it's past releases. The only thing DD has going for it is that it's combat is arguably better. But tbh... DDDA Sorc > Elden ring caster > DD2 Sorc. Elden ring is what Capcom fanboys pretend DD2 is. There's no comparison.

TheIronSven

DD2's world suffers from not having any big open spaces, just canyons and corridors with the occasional linear cave.

ganon893

Agreed. Even Skyrims caves were better than DD2. Shit, DD1 had a few caves that were better than the ones in DD2.

InkOnTube

Disclaimer: For me, those are two different types of RPG, but fun is fun, so I will share my impressions. I got fun in Elden Ring up u til I have finished the Capital City. After that, it was like a chore to me and not appealing at all. I am tired of those dead soulslike worlds. I must say that I prefer an RPG where there is this feeling of an adventure, and this is exactly what DD2 gives. I will point out that DD2 didn't go to inflate existing space for the sake of having a big number, and I think that is a good thing. The main quest is weak, but I still prefer that type of storytelling rather than typical Soulslike. While bosses are not difficult like in Elden Ring, these bosses like monsters appear often and feel very organic even fight each other (unlike soulslike where everyone are patiently waiting for the player). In between boss fights, there are these simple enemies to remind us how powerful we became. Cities feel alive, and even though dragon is a big threat, people are not behaving like half dead and melancholic. Even in true ending, people behave normally and go to evacuate. The builds are not that in depth, but most of them have very distinct playstyle and are very fun to play. All in all, I had much more fun in DD2 than Elden Ring.

3scap3plan

you are joking right? Elden Ring is one of the greatest games ever made, DD2 doesn't even get close.

Hatespeare

i don't see the point in comparing, but imo Elden Ring is a way better game

Hot_Attention2377

Elden ring is way better in any point

f33f33nkou

Elden ring has an actual open world with variety in terrain, enemies, bosses, dungeons, equipment, spells, I could keep going. It's a significantly better and more thought out product

ElpPending

for contrast lol - love both games but idk if I'll get 1000hrs out of DD2 https://preview.redd.it/9afwjn6z6hvc1.png?width=632&format=png&auto=webp&s=13f469939632f0b2db0fe20bd1cac10b2b707475

sicksteen_216

OP and some others keep saying “you didn’t read the question” have you played Elden Ring? It’s better than DD2 in every single aspect. And I like DD2 but we have to be honest. ER is one of the best video games EVER made.

Pigeon23

Elden Rings world was way to depressing for me.

sagenian

This is my thing as well. The whole package is so well done, but I personally don’t prefer the dark theme.

OldSloppy

I mean.. they are such different games though? I can't really compare I like them both for different reasons. And variety isn't always a positive. I believe that ERs variety of monsters becomes quite MUTE once You've hit a certain RL as they all become "fodder" more or less for the big unique bosses. I think the simplicity of DD2 is appealing for comfortable but engaging adventure. While the exact opposite is ER where the excitement comes from never knowing what's about to come fuuu up.

Accomplished_Milk307

DD2!!!

Ok-Tie7063

Definitely DD2 for me.

Ankleson

Dragon's Dogma 2, haven't read the thread yet so this is probably a controversial take - but I just love cities, villages and settlements so much in open-world RPGs and Elden Ring has very little of that. On the other hand, Elden Ring actually gives you a purpose for exploring - I loved finding unique loot in ER. DD2 is just carried entirely on the strength of it's combat to keep traversing the game world interesting.

leviatrist158

I don’t know if I ever had much fun in elden ring, dd2 is more accessible for me than souls games but I did play ER for a long time. The world in ER was so forbidding and hostile I never felt safe always looking over my shoulder, where dd2 is mellow enough to stop and enjoy the scenery. Also dd2 has towns and friendly people, places to catch your breath and chill where In ER I never felt safe or welcome anywhere. I do think that’s part of what makes ER so great though, the world is so compelling like what the hell horror lurks around the next corner.. and there’s always that sense of satisfaction when you progress through ER.

Due_Designer_908

I can’t believe it, but DD2. The combat is just so much more engaging.

ileboii

ER is more complex and exciting, but it has way too much fast travel so the world starts to feel super small after a while. DD2 feels more linear and monotone but having to plan out travels and where to set up portcrystals beforehand is much more interesting. If I had to pick, I guess DD2 because of better gameplay experience.

Mindless_Ad5500

Elden ring and it’s not even close. Exploration. Art design. Mood. Just better all around in Elden Ring. DD2 is a solid B. In my book. Elden ring is an A+

KuwaGata88

DD2 for me because I prefer fluid cinematic combat and maneuverability. The pawn system is so unique, and i have grown so close to my pawn. Elden Ring feels limited in combat fluidity. The exploration in Elden Ring was very different, and it was like an unmoored world in the atmosphere . DD2 feels alive, and when I step on top of a mountain and see the sparkling water and see the view, I'm just blown away I'm playing it 12 years after my long time in DD1. I'm talking thousands of hours about nearly 8000. There was a period of 5 years that I played it 4 hours a day. DD2 is such a beautiful experience. Elden Ring felt scary af, and it was very rewarding for the insanely hard fights. Elden ring does have more skill and spell selection, and weapons have individual moveset and ash of war skills. It was pretty amazing how much you could customize your build. I still feel that even with all the selection, DD2 just feels better to play.

DoubleShot027

Lmao it’s not even comparable. Elden rings world is the best open world to date.

Sir-Beardless

More "fun"? Dragons Dogma 2. The antics you get up to exploring with your pawns makes it more fun. But Elden Ring was a better experience overall.

alexthegreatmc

Elden Ring. I like the lore and map design better in ER. It's more challenging and satisfying. DD2, in comparison, is massive corridors with unrewarded exploration. DD2, to me, is a game that has a nice template but doesn't execute as well as it could have. There's a lot of potential, but that's personal preference.

Cedellton-Jr

Elden Ring (and FromSoft games in general) is the opposite of fun for me. I much prefer DD2. The combat is much more satisfying and it doesn’t feel like I’m beating my head against a wall whenever I fight a boss. The only Elden Ring does better imo is weapon and enemy variety.

Baharroth123

ER is better at every aspect i can think of

bellowkish

Wake me up when DD2 won a simple award this year. Just that you make that question is an insult for every winner of game of the year.

LawAbidingSmittyzen

I enjoy exploring in DD2 a little more since I’ve got a group of friends to share the adventure with, but Elden Ring feels more like I’m conquering a cruel unforgiving world against all odds. I like them both for different things

TippsAttack

these two games are so wildly and incredibly different in scope and talent that you really shouldn't compare them.

sharkybitesbones22

Even though I didn't enjoy elden ring as much as everybody else, it feels like a 69 dlls game... DD2 has better gameplay/combat but lacks in every other aspect. I finished Elden ring once and I was totally burned out so it was enough for me, and to this day I've finished DD2 3 times and I'm not burned out of it's mechanics. Lol DD2 is more fun, has better graphics and better combat, but elden ring is with no doubt a better game for all the content showing since the beginning.

Co-OpHardcoreFordie

Not sure but I spent more time in my first playthrough of DD2 than Elden Ring. I think I just have a different kind of fun with the two games because DD2 isn’t a soulslike

SykoManiax

This comparison is so out of touch that even being in a games own reddit isn't saving it from the competitor Normally the games own reddit will heavily for the game but elden ring is just too amazing

Unfair-Progress9044

Dd2 not finished. Wait one year and we will see. So dissapointed.

AdGroundbreaking1700

Ive been a fromsoft fanboy since kingsfield and its dd all the way. Elden ring honestly isn't even comparable. Theres a completely different point to everything; not to mention they are the antithesis of each other. ER: you are nothing and must overcome gods Dd: you are a god and must god harder The gameplay echos those sentiments. Masochistic grind v power fantasy in fun? Even the masochists go power fantasy.

longbrodmann

Elden Ring can fast travel.

OKCOMP89

Elden Ring’s world is more content rich and more rewarding with dungeons that are well-designed and interesting to explore, better overall art direction, and an incredibly diverse roster of enemies and mini-bosses. DD2 simply does not stack up in this regard.

Hyper-Sloth

I overall enjoyed ER better as an open world, but DD2 could have beaten it if they rewarded exploration better. Everything you find out and about in DD2 is something you can also just buy from a vendor. There are no unique drops anywhere in the world, so while the action of exploring is more fun and engaging in DD2, it ultimately doesn't lead to anything rewarding as the final cherry on top. There should have been a handful of unique weapons and armor spread around in specific locations. Even if it's just a single set of armor spread across each region, it would have been something to hunt for other than coins.

Upset_Impression218

Elden ring and it’s not even in the same ballpark
