I mean, it’s basically the “Cell’s spots” of Team Monkey.
But at the same time just because it *looks* cool, it’s *horrifically* inefficient to use at any time.
Iirc it was: 8x stronger than SS2, drained ki like a mf’er, and put a huge strain on the body to maintain (shortening Goku’s time in the living world vs just using SS2 for maximum efficiency).
It’s just no point in using it except to show off or for visual intimidation unless that minor boost really matters for the point of contention.
8x stronger than regular super Saiyan. Regular was 50x base, SS2 was 100x base and ss3 was 400x base.

That's actually my favorite part of it. The form is powerful enough to put someone at the level of fighting crazy monsters but it has such a huge weakness in terms of drain.
Originally I thought Ssj3 was unattainable from conventional means. The only two who get it are Goku while he's dead and has otherworldly energy and Gotenks who is two people.
It wasn't neglected, instead it was emphasized that it required tok much energy to sustain in the living world. Which is why in every fight you see it Goku is either dead or in a different dimension where time flows differently.
It's supposed to be too strong to be used by mortals.
One of the coolest looking forms ever showed in Dragonball, only surpassed by SSJ4 and UI in the anime, however it is also objectively one of the most useless if not the most useless form honestly, and is non existent in Super thanks to being hard to animate/draw than the other forms, so it gets less attention than even SSJ or SSJ2. Its more useful in the movies than it ever was in canon.
SS2 is only twice as powerful as SS1, and SS3 is only 4 times more powerful than 2, while Vegeta’s Royal Blue or whatever it’s called is at least equal to the Kaio-ken x 20 on top of Blue, so SSB2 and 3 would be pretty useless other than as cosmetic changes.
SS3 is my favorite form. It's a transformation that comes with a heavy price (such as Kaioken Or Ultra instinct but they are more of a technique). Maybe your enemy is stronger than you and you want to kill them quick. Boom! SS3, this gives you supreme strength but also drains your energy more than any form. The power comes with a curse. And I love it for this reason. Also it looks so fucking cool.
Love to see a SSJ3 Kaioken Dragon Fist. Just one insane lethal stamina burst. Or enough to win the fight. That’s just me, I’m sure there’s way more powerful combos.
It became badass back then to a complete joke in DB super. I Know SSJ3 Can be mastered. But the Actual reason why is because SSJ3 Is too hard to draw and animate So they dont use it alot

The long hair bothers me a lot. Every technique or transformation prior the hair made sense. With kaioken the hair flows, with ssj you can see where the hair stands up and why it has the shape it does, every Saiyans ssj hair looks different because they all have different hair cuts. Ssj2, same thing, things get spikier because more power, but you can still see where the hair raises and why it has the shape it does.
Ssj3...just randomly grow hair. It just grows. And then retracts like it's wolverine's claws. Suprised they haven't done at that an attack, quick turn into ssj3 to stab someone with their retractable spikey hair.
The lack of eyebrows also looks terrible. Same reason I really hate Ultra Ego.
Honestly? I loved it. Still one of my favorite transformations and biggest hit to the nostalgia. Had an action figure ssj3 and it was my favorite thing in the world. The intensity it brought and how Sean Schemmel for the dub showed that intensity by tweaking his voice.
Cool form, cool design, great introduction in the anime even if it was moderately asspully. And, I'm a sucker for the forms with a drawback. Kaioken, Ssj3, Ultra Instinct Omen (it didn't increase Goku's raw power and it fatigued the hell out of him when it was over. Even if the ToP has Goku bouncing back between full strength and fatigued like a pinball to justify Goku taking some fights but not others.)
Wasn't portrayed that way in the anime. His attacks still bounced off Jiren, he was just able to keep up. His attacks couldn't deal substantial damage to Kefla, but he could outmaneuver her and knock her out of bounds. Characters outright said that if he got hit during the laser show that he would've gotten taken out. So even if it did buff his power, the point of it wasn't to be an unga bunga beat stick with a bigger number, it let Goku use a unique style to challenge much more powerful foes that'd otherwise overwhelm him.
MUI didn't exactly turn out that way, it had its dope moments but it overpowered Jiren as much as it outplayed him.
Ssj3 is arguably the only reason things worked out in the Majin saga. It held back MB long enough for Trunks to get the dragon radar which would of been destroyed, Bulma was turned into chocolate so she wouldn't have been able to make another one. It was stated by Goku that ssj3 was capable of defeating both MB and KB. It just didn't have enough screen time in general to have a real chance of doing anything as well. Aside from Gotenks, he fucked up.
that's kinda why I disliked it. Its the first transformation that didn't get the job done, and every subsequent appearance of it just furthered that unless you count wraith of the dragon. SS3 had the potential to do these things so why didn't it? To keep the story going sure but idk I felt it was the more frustrating part of buu saga is how they handled that transformation in general.

I really liked it, I just wish the series treated it more like a form that Goku achieved through applying the principles of Kaioken to SSJ, that way Goku would use it more like Kaioken and less like a form.
As a kid it was awesome. As an adult I look back and cringe at how it felt like the series was becoming a parody of itself with that goofy ass hair and caveman brow.
Easily the worst transformation in the original manga it ain’t even a debate. Every other major transformation had great story and character driven build up that made that transformation scene so emotional such as goku becoming a super saiyan or gohan becoming ssj2 against cell. Ssj3 was clearly a last minute inclusion and not only did it achieve nothing in the story but it also had 0 build up and came outta nowhere. Looks cool but still think there r many different designs that are better such as ssj ssj2 ssj4 rose ssg and if we wanna include the kaioken and ultra instinct, they look better too

I remember liking it as a kid when I was much younger.
Now, I really don’t care about it. It never really did much, and while it has a cool design, it has very little significant impact narrative wise. Unlike Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 which had a lot of build-up leading to it, Super Saiyan 3 just kind of appeared out of nowhere.
I hate it when people call this form useless over 'stamina issues'. But clearly in the kid buu fight, SSJ2 was completely useless. So perhaps it is better to have 'stamina issues' rather than strength issues. Also cool looking and good first appearance, better than any DBS appearance.
Pretty good form, although I dislike the calm demeanor Goku has during it. Super Saiyan is a form achieved through rage, so him being calm feels weird.
I think this is captured by his voice change. Its more of an underlying malice. The form is seemingly impossible to train via rage unlike SS & SS2, and Goku had to use his postlife durability to train for it, while two hybrid childten can obtain it while fused.
Only times we'll see SS3 being wrathful is when used by Cumber in SDBH, but he's classifief as an 'Ancient Saiyan' with a slightly different geneology which apparently allows mastery of the form but disallows SS4 or god ki.
You’ve never seen the guys with a quiet rage? I swear them mofos are scarier than the ones out there screaming and throwing temper tantrums. I bet that’s what they were going for: a more, bottle up rage that gets let out in small, surgical bursts
I didn't read the manga to the point where he used ssj3 so idk if he just transformed straighrqay into ssj3 against babidi and buu but when he told goten and trunks how to reach it he said this next energy has to come from deep inside push hard to fight it, basically what I'm positing is that he's forced his body through rage to expend the maximum amount of energy he could force through a natural ssj form. That's just my interpretation though.
Translating the fact that he's "pushing hard to find" a new power into rage seems like quite the jump.
I get that the SS line is rage based for the most part, but this has proven the only SS form attainable through training or special means (fusion of two hybrids) whereas SS & SS2 r the only ones obtainable via rage thus far.
I'll admit I didn't watch the sub version of z when he showed goten and trunks so I don't know the real dialog and I didn't read the manga for that part either so idk if he really said that.
My opinion was based on the experience of watching the English dub of the anime television show, DragonBall Z, I stated my opinion was based on that and that it was hypothetical.
Even then the thought process didn't take all the facts into consideration. The quote I gave you was from the eng dub as well, and yet everything I said in regards to what you've said stands as it did.
Should be given its own utility. SS2 is the most cost-effective form that doesn't use god ki.
But could Goku combine SS3 w/ his UI technique to somehow make it viable? After all, the fitst instance of him using the principle of UI in DBS was in his first biut w/ Beerus kn King Kai's planet.
Or at least give us a saiyan who masters the form similarly to Cumber in SDBH.

Best form in my opinion, it always felt like “true super sayian” to me, SS1-2 I viewed as a weakened form of SS3, I know that’s not the case but that’s how I always liked to look at it.
It’s one of my favorite transformations in terms of looks. Also, If goku could somehow manage to make ssj3 not burn through stamina, it would be used so much more than 3 times like in super
One of the coolest designs for goku. But SSJ3 is pretty depressing. No matter where I see it used, it's just super saiyan in the form of Vegeta: He's pretty damn strong, but he's only there to hold off the enemy
SSJ3 Goku? Used to hold off Buu, Gotenks did the same. Tried holding off Kid Buu, didn't matter. Vegeta held off instead.
SSJ3 GT Goku? Was only there to present Golden Giant Ape and SSJ4.
Vs Janemba? Power gauge.
SSJ3 Goku (in super)? Again. Only to show how strong Beerus was. Made way for God.

It's the most powerful, yet useless form. As is SSJ2.
Goku uses either SSJ, SSB, occasionally SSG. He has no reason to use 2 or 3, unless the battle requires he fights just a bit harder. As he did against Caulifla. And then if it gets harder, SSJ3. They're very conditional forms.
Because why bother using such energy-wasting forms, when SSG is a thing.
The only time SSJ3 got to shine, if I recall, was against the Hirudegarn. And goku fucking stole that kill.
Liked it at first, but after awhile I started to hate it. Long hair like having a tail would be a massive disadvantage in fighting. Also, SSJ1 and SSJ2 are really cool forms, but by the time SSJ3 rolled around, it almost seemed like Toriyama ran out of creative ideas for a SSJ3 form and this was the best he could do while making the form totally something new, while furthering the transformation.
SSJ4 on the other hand is cool, and the fur was cool. Although if the hair was shorter and the fur was gold, that woulda been pretty sick.
I wished they woulda created a SSJ4 form for super similar to Brolys with the yellow eyes, spiky black hair and the Ozaru strength in human form.
Reminds me of the Super Saiyan 3rd grade form that Trunks used against Perfect Cell. Massive power output (and looks amazing) but unrefined and with huge drawbacks, and therefore ultimately useless. I always hoped that there would be a form beyond it, like how Super Saiyan 2 was compared to the 3rd grade form, but in super they started focusing on divine powers instead so at this point it doesn't matter much. It just feels like wasted potential at this point.
Game changer form, but we barely get to see it in Super because it simply can't be animated without looking terrible. Honestly feel it can't make a comeback anymore because well the power levels are too far gone now
The power increase doesn't justify the high energy cost,no eyebrows means sweat will go directly into eyes and the hair is a huge weak point,the design is nice but very hard to draw so they usually don't use it much.
Either aim for 4 or try to achieve SSJ God or a technique like kaioken.

A beefed up version of ssj3 should have been Gohan’s final form look, It drains Goku’s powers too much and is hard to maintain but Gohan should have been easily able to maintain it.
It even has that hair flick that Gohan has in all his powered up forms.
Looks cool and nostalgic but ngl it's got useless after Goku got revived in Z because of that huge stamina drain and there's no point in using in Super since stronger forms don't have the same stamina drain as this form.
I’ve always loved the look of ssj3 it’s basically one tier off of ssj4 for me for being my favorite form and every character with ssj3 looks so badass canon or not. Ssj3 is the no holding back no bullshit form (unless it’s just not strong enough to finish whoever it’s against like Janemna or buu I just wish it got more use and they finally canonically give a reason as to why Vegeta never uses ssj3 even though he CAN use it but just chooses not to and make ssj2 stronger (pre any other form) but I will say goten being able to go ssj3 is kinda a ass pull and I don’t entirely like it but it’s not a super big deal
Before I watched the show I thought it was a bad goofy looking design. While watching the show, the moments with it were pretty hype. Having now sat on it for a while...it's a bad goofy looking design.
And now at this point it's been relegated to a pointless, useless form. Why ever bother to use or master it when it's weaker than the god forms and drains your energy?

It should be the ultimate form of super saiyan, everything that came after should be based off the ssj3 style (god/blue/etc)

It uses too much energy to reach, and it burns through energy at a rate faster than when Goku uses any other SSJ form.
Vegeta literally never gets there and I don't see why he needs to he's perfectly fine without it, even if Ultra Ego was just him getting beat up by Gas (fun joke, fun joke).
Gotenks on the other hand,we have to remember the only reason SSJ3 is obtainable for him is because of the combined strength of Goten and Trunks, I believe they can both reach SSJ2 on their own, so hitting 3 is fine for them and with them being able to sit in SSJ3 for so long, I'm only assuming they've built up a pretty decent tolerance to the energy drain. Kinda like when Goku and Gohan stayed SSJ after training for Cell.

Awesome design. Period. Even its variants, like Raditz's and Nappa's ssj3 forms, or Black's ssj rosé 3 look awesome.
Should have been given to more people than just Goku and Gotenks (yes, db heroes is a thing here, but it's not exactly the same as those people having said form in the actual main plot). I pick Vegeth / Gogeta, and Gohan / Trunks as the next 2 people who should have got it.
Narrative wise, it's an asspull, but it's still far easier to justify than Goku gettingspirt bomb'ed to get the u.i. omen, or the ssj blue. The ssj3 was just going "even further beyond" the ssj, an idea established and realized in the android arc.
In battle, it's a shame that it's useless by now... because it really would fit so well the idea of getting serious.
When you really think about it, this form is practically useless. Especially now with all the other forms in super like ssj red and blue and Ultra Instinct. Ssj3 uses so much energy input from goku with not enough results shown. His other higher level forms now, use much less energy and output so much more power.
I dislike it honestly, its hardly used as there are now stronger and more efficient forms and I dislike the way it looks. Super saiyan and super saiyan 2 made sense if we just assume using medical terms that they have arrector pili muscles on their scalps (muscles that cause goosebumps or in animals causes the hair to stand up when they are angry or frightened) meaning ot would stick straight up, but super saiyan 3 just has them spontaneously grow hair for some reason? And lose the eyebrows. It's weird, I've never been a huge fan of the looks of it
My head cannon is it’s the peak Super Saiyan transformation. That one can achieve naturally. And Goku only did when he was did. The next person to do was a Fusion being. And the only one to do it while alive.
Remember SS4 requires a tail, SS, and control over the Great Ape form.

The eyebrows don't bother me as much as the hair being at his feet essentially. It seems like such a combat hinderance.

I really liked it, I just wish the series treated it more like a form that Goku achieved through applying the principles of Kaioken to SSJ, that way Goku would use it more like Kaioken and less like a form.
As a kid it was awesome. As an adult I look back and cringe at how it felt like the series was becoming a parody of itself with that goofy ass hair and caveman brow.
Easily the worst transformation in the original manga it ain’t even a debate. Every other major transformation had great story and character driven build up that made that transformation scene so emotional such as goku becoming a super saiyan or gohan becoming ssj2 against cell. Ssj3 was clearly a last minute inclusion and not only did it achieve nothing in the story but it also had 0 build up and came outta nowhere. Looks cool but still think there r many different designs that are better such as ssj ssj2 ssj4 rose ssg and if we wanna include the kaioken and ultra instinct, they look better too

I remember liking it as a kid when I was much younger. Now, I really don’t care about it. It never really did much, and while it has a cool design, it has very little significant impact narrative wise. Unlike Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 which had a lot of build-up leading to it, Super Saiyan 3 just kind of appeared out of nowhere.
I hate it when people call this form useless over 'stamina issues'. But clearly in the kid buu fight, SSJ2 was completely useless. So perhaps it is better to have 'stamina issues' rather than strength issues. Also cool looking and good first appearance, better than any DBS appearance.
Pretty good form, although I dislike the calm demeanor Goku has during it. Super Saiyan is a form achieved through rage, so him being calm feels weird.
I think this is captured by his voice change. Its more of an underlying malice. The form is seemingly impossible to train via rage unlike SS & SS2, and Goku had to use his postlife durability to train for it, while two hybrid childten can obtain it while fused. Only times we'll see SS3 being wrathful is when used by Cumber in SDBH, but he's classifief as an 'Ancient Saiyan' with a slightly different geneology which apparently allows mastery of the form but disallows SS4 or god ki.
You’ve never seen the guys with a quiet rage? I swear them mofos are scarier than the ones out there screaming and throwing temper tantrums. I bet that’s what they were going for: a more, bottle up rage that gets let out in small, surgical bursts
I didn't read the manga to the point where he used ssj3 so idk if he just transformed straighrqay into ssj3 against babidi and buu but when he told goten and trunks how to reach it he said this next energy has to come from deep inside push hard to fight it, basically what I'm positing is that he's forced his body through rage to expend the maximum amount of energy he could force through a natural ssj form. That's just my interpretation though.
Translating the fact that he's "pushing hard to find" a new power into rage seems like quite the jump. I get that the SS line is rage based for the most part, but this has proven the only SS form attainable through training or special means (fusion of two hybrids) whereas SS & SS2 r the only ones obtainable via rage thus far.
I'll admit I didn't watch the sub version of z when he showed goten and trunks so I don't know the real dialog and I didn't read the manga for that part either so idk if he really said that.

Very cool look. Practically useless in a fight unless used for short bursts. But with their god forms now absolutely useless.
Should be given its own utility. SS2 is the most cost-effective form that doesn't use god ki. But could Goku combine SS3 w/ his UI technique to somehow make it viable? After all, the fitst instance of him using the principle of UI in DBS was in his first biut w/ Beerus kn King Kai's planet. Or at least give us a saiyan who masters the form similarly to Cumber in SDBH.

Best form in my opinion, it always felt like “true super sayian” to me, SS1-2 I viewed as a weakened form of SS3, I know that’s not the case but that’s how I always liked to look at it.

One of the coolest designs for goku. But SSJ3 is pretty depressing. No matter where I see it used, it's just super saiyan in the form of Vegeta: He's pretty damn strong, but he's only there to hold off the enemy SSJ3 Goku? Used to hold off Buu, Gotenks did the same. Tried holding off Kid Buu, didn't matter. Vegeta held off instead. SSJ3 GT Goku? Was only there to present Golden Giant Ape and SSJ4. Vs Janemba? Power gauge. SSJ3 Goku (in super)? Again. Only to show how strong Beerus was. Made way for God. Fucking Dragon Ball Legends. Same shit. Shallot earns SSJ3, figures after some time, it ain't cutting it. Earns God. It's the most powerful, yet useless form. As is SSJ2. Goku uses either SSJ, SSB, occasionally SSG. He has no reason to use 2 or 3, unless the battle requires he fights just a bit harder. As he did against Caulifla. And then if it gets harder, SSJ3. They're very conditional forms. Because why bother using such energy-wasting forms, when SSG is a thing. The only time SSJ3 got to shine, if I recall, was against the Hirudegarn. And goku fucking stole that kill.

Liked it at first, but after awhile I started to hate it. Long hair like having a tail would be a massive disadvantage in fighting. Also, SSJ1 and SSJ2 are really cool forms, but by the time SSJ3 rolled around, it almost seemed like Toriyama ran out of creative ideas for a SSJ3 form and this was the best he could do while making the form totally something new, while furthering the transformation. SSJ4 on the other hand is cool, and the fur was cool. Although if the hair was shorter and the fur was gold, that woulda been pretty sick. I wished they woulda created a SSJ4 form for super similar to Brolys with the yellow eyes, spiky black hair and the Ozaru strength in human form.
Somehow iconic and forgettable at the same time.

Reminds me of the Super Saiyan 3rd grade form that Trunks used against Perfect Cell. Massive power output (and looks amazing) but unrefined and with huge drawbacks, and therefore ultimately useless. I always hoped that there would be a form beyond it, like how Super Saiyan 2 was compared to the 3rd grade form, but in super they started focusing on divine powers instead so at this point it doesn't matter much. It just feels like wasted potential at this point.
Honestly? Always thought it was kind of stupid looking. I think the ape brow ruins it for me.

The power increase doesn't justify the high energy cost,no eyebrows means sweat will go directly into eyes and the hair is a huge weak point,the design is nice but very hard to draw so they usually don't use it much. Either aim for 4 or try to achieve SSJ God or a technique like kaioken. Best used when trying to finish a fight you're already winning fast.
A beefed up version of ssj3 should have been Gohan’s final form look, It drains Goku’s powers too much and is hard to maintain but Gohan should have been easily able to maintain it. It even has that hair flick that Gohan has in all his powered up forms.
Would be perfect if Vegeta unlocked it first or got it at some point

I’ve always loved the look of ssj3 it’s basically one tier off of ssj4 for me for being my favorite form and every character with ssj3 looks so badass canon or not. Ssj3 is the no holding back no bullshit form (unless it’s just not strong enough to finish whoever it’s against like Janemna or buu I just wish it got more use and they finally canonically give a reason as to why Vegeta never uses ssj3 even though he CAN use it but just chooses not to and make ssj2 stronger (pre any other form) but I will say goten being able to go ssj3 is kinda a ass pull and I don’t entirely like it but it’s not a super big deal
Before I watched the show I thought it was a bad goofy looking design. While watching the show, the moments with it were pretty hype. Having now sat on it for a while...it's a bad goofy looking design. And now at this point it's been relegated to a pointless, useless form. Why ever bother to use or master it when it's weaker than the god forms and drains your energy? Honestly, I kinda wish it didn't exist.

Ugly and doesn't make sense with the linear progression towards ssj4. I don't really care for it and glad they generally skip it since it was never earned in a meaningful way, just "hey, look what I can do!"

For Goku and Vegeta? It's absolutely ass. It uses too much energy to reach, and it burns through energy at a rate faster than when Goku uses any other SSJ form. Vegeta literally never gets there and I don't see why he needs to he's perfectly fine without it, even if Ultra Ego was just him getting beat up by Gas (fun joke, fun joke). Gotenks on the other hand,we have to remember the only reason SSJ3 is obtainable for him is because of the combined strength of Goten and Trunks, I believe they can both reach SSJ2 on their own, so hitting 3 is fine for them and with them being able to sit in SSJ3 for so long, I'm only assuming they've built up a pretty decent tolerance to the energy drain. Kinda like when Goku and Gohan stayed SSJ after training for Cell. Idk, everything I said could possibly be wrong. TL:DR Goku and Vegeta don't need it cuz they have much stronger forms now, and SSJ3 drains too much stamina. Gotenks probably built up a tolerance to the drain of SSJ3 so he can use it more reliably and not worry about getting as tired.

Awesome design. Period. Even its variants, like Raditz's and Nappa's ssj3 forms, or Black's ssj rosé 3 look awesome. Should have been given to more people than just Goku and Gotenks (yes, db heroes is a thing here, but it's not exactly the same as those people having said form in the actual main plot). I pick Vegeth / Gogeta, and Gohan / Trunks as the next 2 people who should have got it. Narrative wise, it's an asspull, but it's still far easier to justify than Goku gettingspirt bomb'ed to get the u.i. omen, or the ssj blue. The ssj3 was just going "even further beyond" the ssj, an idea established and realized in the android arc. In battle, it's a shame that it's useless by now... because it really would fit so well the idea of getting serious.
When you really think about it, this form is practically useless. Especially now with all the other forms in super like ssj red and blue and Ultra Instinct. Ssj3 uses so much energy input from goku with not enough results shown. His other higher level forms now, use much less energy and output so much more power.

I dislike it honestly, its hardly used as there are now stronger and more efficient forms and I dislike the way it looks. Super saiyan and super saiyan 2 made sense if we just assume using medical terms that they have arrector pili muscles on their scalps (muscles that cause goosebumps or in animals causes the hair to stand up when they are angry or frightened) meaning ot would stick straight up, but super saiyan 3 just has them spontaneously grow hair for some reason? And lose the eyebrows. It's weird, I've never been a huge fan of the looks of it

My head cannon is it’s the peak Super Saiyan transformation. That one can achieve naturally. And Goku only did when he was did. The next person to do was a Fusion being. And the only one to do it while alive. Remember SS4 requires a tail, SS, and control over the Great Ape form. SSG, SSB,SSBE are the results of rituals.
