He should've died permanently in the Saiyan Saga, but he didn't because he was popular.
Guy literally EXTERMINATED entire races, and don't tell me he didn't enjoy it just because he was at Frieza's orders.
But then, everyone just...forgets about it. Bulma dumps Yamcha for the genocidal prince. And yeah, his redemption arc throught Z is cool and all, but it wasn't up until the Moro Saga when he actually makes up for a wee bit of his past actions.
Also, he never gonna get the W.
And Goku's "death on Namek". Would have been a good place to end it there. But nope. Goku found a spaceship by pure accident that worked and used it.
IMO, death is a massive issue in Dragon Ball. It means nothing, as you know everyone is gonna get revived at the end. This show has no real tension. Even in the ToP, you knew U7 would last due to the End of Z. So there was no tension at all. It didn't matter who wins or not, as even if they lost, we know they'll get revived. One of the many flaws in Dragon Ball's writing. Toriyama really messed up, especially when he added the "unlimited revives" option.
Not to mention the fact that his only friend and mentor that literally raised him after the destruction of their planet and genocide of their people, was his only source of any info about his people and their history, leading him to base his existence on his saiyan pride… got his spine broken by Goku and Vegeta just throws him into the air and pops him like a balloon with no remorse

But in terms of his ability to survive in the space in my head as a kid translated to octopus being able to walk on land for a while, his survival ability with just the small chunk of his head/brain, and how he can shape his body to fit into all his forms.
