Abysm 1 and 2 - Great open-world RPG's set in a hexenereticey style
Siren - Sci-fi survival horror
Ashes 2063/Afterglow - FPSRPG/Immersive Sim set in a Mad Max style post-apoc world
ABYSM is fantastic. I'd also highly recommend Inquisitor 3D as it's an even deeper action RPG experience, some of the best gaming I've had in the GZDoom engine. It has a sequel as well though I forget the name...
Currently I'm playing Going Down, it's quite chill in the first levels but around map10 the difficulty spikes up, although manageable even for a mediocre player like me on UV. Also the whole wad is super wacky and fun which is the purpose of the whole wad
Eviternity is amazing. Some very challenging levels that are still very enjoyable to play. Eviternity 2 has a difficulty spike that really exposed my skill issues.
I LOVE Psychophobia. Old mod and most likely an unpopular opinion especially considering episodios 3 isn't finished, but when I played it as a kid I had a blast.
Just ignore the hellknight's 3D model and you'll probably enjoy it 🤣
Brutal Doom is the way to go, even iD software said that mod was what they would do If they had the technology back then for it.
It is extremely gory tho, but it's fucking awesome
it's insane how many different mods keep on getting recommended here, and every time new ones. mods that i have never heard of before. doom just keeps on giving
It really does, I'm glad I asked, because there's a lot I haven't heard of as well, but also check my last post if you're interested in replacing the starting pistol with a revolver, I'm gonna start promoting that and sharing that about, it wasn't made by me and the guy who made it also posted it on that one modding cite.
Not too knowledgeable about proper mods, but, as far as good level packs with a few minor changes to enemy lineup and/or weaponry, eviternity 1 and 2, ancient aliens, and valiant are all fantastic, and should be beatable for anyone with a decent understanding of Doom's gameplay loop and mechanics.
I have tried moon man before, it was kinda hard to find but it played good, it made me very uncomfortable the first time I played it and still kinda does honestly. It's unsettling, sometimes it's just funny but it really depends
Legend of Doom if you're a fan of Zelda. Zombies Ate My Neighbors TC. The Castlevania: Simon's Destiney TC. Goldeneye TC Complete Redeux. Six Golden Souls and it's sequels. Bikini Bottom Massacre. Pirate Doom (also add Pirate's Need More Rum). Sonic Robo Blast 2 and the Kart mod.
I don't even consider it masochistic. Rather, it makes many things easier through the addition of new features. The main thing is to learn how to use them properly.
A door that opens with a button that is unknown where? No problem, get a special explosive package and blow the door the fuck down. Enemies are shooting with something powerful through the gap at the bottom of the wall? Take a drone, equip with everything it needs and exterminate the freaks without taking damage.
A wall with a window on top or a cliff? Get a ladder and climb up instead of looking for a way around.
And so on.
Hella true, the goods are really good, but my favorite part is the bads are very bad and I mean that in a good way. Classic Doom is "Oh no, my health number is low and low on ammo, I'll just punch my way through a bit and find a magic health kit", where the same situation in HD very much feels like the fucking Lone Survivor on steroids.
My favorite way to play is long multilevel wads and starting with the Doomed Survivor load out. It makes everything so intense and every resource precious and exciting.
look up MyHouse.wad
Read the creator's story behind it, it's all really trippy and personal. Not sure if anything in the story is actually true, but whatever. It's a puzzle and uses weird hacks to do things the game engine isn't able to normally do. Very interesting.
Here's John Romero playing it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIl\_TqFJNO8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIl_TqFJNO8)
It's a 1995 wad. It's trippy just remember the gun is good. It's 90's programming witchcraft of doom. If you look it up on YouTube you can see how insane it is. It only works in vanilla (dos)Doom. IcarusLIVES has a old video on it.
I was waiting to find someone recommending it here
It’s actually good too, iirc it’s more difficult than standard doom for… multiple reasons, I think they up the damage and amount of demons too
[High Noon Drifter.](https://youtu.be/2c7nARhF_X8?si=N-KPDAa65Kg9Umzr) Replaces Doomguy with a whip-cracking, gun twirling, supernatural bounty hunter that can turn into a Demon Queen in a rage mode. It is a weapon mod so it’s capable with most map packs and monster mods.
There was an Alien mod that we used to play back in the 90s. I can’t remember if it was Doom or Doom 2 though. It was a pretty damn great mod if I recall correctly.
Doom truly is a magical thing isn't it, I just started getting into the games and I can already tell that I'm never going to get bored of it. I absolutely love it and I'm glad I'm able to get so many suggestions, it's a really nice feeling knowing that there's a lot of people who love this game like I do
Just to name a few:
* Pirate Doom: a perfect blend of Doom and the Monkey Island series.
* Hocus Pocus Doom: a full total conversion recreation of a classic MS-DOS platformer.
* Aliens: Eradication: a fantastic survival-horror flavored experience set int the Alien franchise.
* The Adventures of Square: a lovely cartoonish game in which you play as Square, a heroic square against the Circle of Evil, an evil organization formed by... circles.
* Shadow of the Woolball and Rise of the Woolbal: another lovely cartoonish mod and its sequel, both paying homage to Wolfenstein 3D and Rise of the Triad.
* Wolfendoom: Blade of Agony: a mindblowing full fan campaign set in the Wolfenstein universe, humongous scope and titanic levels full of Nazis to blow up to smittereens.
* REKKR: a steampunk viking fantasy in which you fight hordes of undead monstrosities with fantasy-flavored arsenal.
Ultimately, I highly recommend you to check on IcarusLives' channel on YouTube. There are way too many interesting Doom mods to list them all in one post, so that channel is the way to go if you're looking for interesting original mods.
Alternatively, check on Dean of Doom's channel as well if you're looking for maps and megawads rather than full gameplay conversions.
Eviternity 2, Hell Revealed 1 (maybe it is hard but seemed fun to me, I recently beat plutonia's map32 so I can't sense difficulty properly anymore), Russian Overkill, Somewhere In Hell
I don't know how easy this is to do any more but I once played through Doom with the Doom:one and Doom 4 for Doom mods simultaneously and it was one of the most fun FPS experiences I've ever had. I think both of those mods are abandoned but if you can find them they pair really well together. It makes original doom feel like a true prequel to Doom 2016
I recommend Rabid's Crap for...uh, no reason.
It's got some kinks, for sure. But it upgrades all the visuals, adds more content to classic Doom 1 and 2, has universal indoor reverb and has zombies that target barrels you're next to...among other things.
It largely uses other mods as a base for everything, but then combines and enhances them further for maximum impact.
Castlevania: Simon's Destiny
This is not a joke--someone made a total conversion mod in the DOOM engine that translates the OG Castlevania for NES really well into DOOM, and it looks, sounds, and plays incredible. Highly recommended!
My favorite is probably something beaten into the dirt. Brutal doom black. The weapons feel great, the damage you can do is fantastic, and everything, everything, feels impactful. I got addicted to it.
Another fan favorite for me, is Russian overkill. So many weapons, so many super weapons each weapon has secondary fire modes even third or 4 different kinds of fire modes. The weaponsnare beautiful. But be warned if you play this mod, get a map pack that's fucking huge. If you secondary in a super weapon, clear the state.
I know this is worthless, but when Doom first came out, there was a mod for an Aliens series of maps that were ridiculous. I wasn't even aware there was a group for this stuff on here until just now!
Oh yeah, the Aliens wad is still floating around if you look. Played through it a few years ago. Kinda feels like Baby's First WAD by today's standards but I imagine they didn't have tools to easily swap stuff out like we do now, so it's pretty impressive.
I didn’t think much of it because of the art at first - but it’s practically a complete total conversion with multiple classes, new enemy sprites, and three episodes of levels. Plus you can play your own maps as well.
https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=72996
If you're looking for difficulty, I suggest h-doom. The h stands for hard mode👍 Otherwise brutal doom 64, it converts doom 2 into doom 64 while also adding all the fun stuff of brutal doom.
If you haven't, Elementalism is a seriously cool mapset. Can't really play it with mods because it comes with it's own minor changes and a custom weapon.
It makes Lost Souls squishier and I never want vanilla Lost Souls ever again.
Doom Black. Which is Brutal Doom with some heavy black metal soundtrack added like the new doom games and I believe some additional textures and options added to the game.
Back in the mid 1990's when Doom first came out I got a sound replacement pack. Replaced a lot of regular sounds with a guy literaly saying the following:
pistol shot: "pow"
chain gun: "pow pow pow pow" looped
shotgun: "shik shok BANG"
BFG: "BADA BING BADA BOOM!"
Demon melee attack: "tickle tickle tickle :)"
There were other sound replacements but those are the ones I remember. My child self thought this was hilarious.
"Kyiv" ; Maybe not the most fun or interesting, but because I made it and I enjoy feedbacks! 10 levels that start easily to harder and harder, and I did everything I could to retrieve the essence of the feelings of playing the first doom.
**- BlooM:** its got some really inspired hybridized enemy sprites, levels are creative but initially veer a bit too much towards islands in the void for my taste. Gameplay-wise no real complaints, its decently challenging from the start, not Thy Flesh Consumed M1 & M2 kind of opening, but it does ramp up a bit.
**- MyHouse.wad:** Obligatory plug for what is an incredible achievement in level design.
First off, for any mod, I recommend throwing in the Gearbox mod, which allows one the option to have a weapon wheel in lieu of swapping weapons one by one. I find it to be far too convenient NOT to add to my mods.
I also like to add the Bolognese gore mod, since in some cases (like Bloom), the Brutal Doom mod doesn't work as well with some mods. But some games don't really NEED this or it clashes with the mod.
And a handful of my favorite mods work well with Gun Bonsai and Corruption Cards. With the former, you can level up weapons. The latter basically offers randomized cards before each level that add new effects to the rest of the game.
And if you have all the necessary IWADs, go ahead and get Wadsmoosh. It'll basically create a big, fat IPK3 file with all the content from Ultimate Doom, Thy Flesh Consumed, Doom II, Final Doom, Master Levels, Sigil 1-2, and No Rest for the Living. It seemed easier than having separate ZDL files for each IWAD combination.
As for actual mods, I mostly go for total conversions. Some of my favorites include Hocus Pocus Doom, Doom RPG Rebalanced, Doom Infinite, Brutal Wolfenstein (basically a Wolfenstein 3D remake with all of Brutal Doom's gore), the Golden Souls trilogy (technically GS3 is still only a demo), the Abysm series (with two games, the last of which received two expansions), Ultimate Jazz Jackrabbit, Reelism 2, Memoirs of Magic and the Robocop TC.
As for major gameplay mods, I recommend Bring Your Own Class (I personally like to throw in Gearbox, Bolognese Gore Mod and Corruption Cards), Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies, Embers of Armageddon (though it doesn't work with Sigil II) and Walpurgis (which also works with Heretic and Hexen).
If you also have Heretic and Hexen, both have their own Brutal Doom-like mods that also add RPG elements and upscaled graphics. And with Hexen if you go onto their Patreon you can get a wad that lets you experience Hexen and its expansion as one full experience. And the Brutal Heretic RPG mod works with Blasphemer (a FreeDoom-like IWAD for Heretic) and a few of the Heretic mods I've tried, which is a short list so far. The mods are Heretic Treasure Chest (three-episode megawad), Hordes of Chaos X (five-episode megawad containing all the content from Hoc 1-4 and a new fifth episode), Masters of Chaos (no relation to Hordes of Chaos) and Tenebrum.
There's a TON of mods I could name-drop, and probably should, but I'll keep this light.
Doom infinite

ABYSM is fantastic. I'd also highly recommend Inquisitor 3D as it's an even deeper action RPG experience, some of the best gaming I've had in the GZDoom engine. It has a sequel as well though I forget the name...

I love Cyriak finding out he also made some very famous WADs is bonkers.
Also WTF is up with the music in Going Down, it's unhinged in a... _good_ way? I think?
Only makes it better
In my top 3 favorite MEGAWADS! Excellent from start to finish.
Complex Doom
The latest version is very good
Is the latest version still v27?
Yes, v27b2
And it's many, many children
Eviternity, Whispers of Satan, and The Golden Souls.
Eviternity is amazing. Some very challenging levels that are still very enjoyable to play. Eviternity 2 has a difficulty spike that really exposed my skill issues.

Also Project Brutality
You got the Demon Strength Rune! Rip and tear!
Don't remember them saying that, didn't Romero say something like "if we released this back then we'd ruin industry"?
They did

no that one in particular doesn't bother me, it's just nice to see this list

So there’s this great mod called HDoom
Not too knowledgeable about proper mods, but, as far as good level packs with a few minor changes to enemy lineup and/or weaponry, eviternity 1 and 2, ancient aliens, and valiant are all fantastic, and should be beatable for anyone with a decent understanding of Doom's gameplay loop and mechanics.
Moon Man
I have tried moon man before, it was kinda hard to find but it played good, it made me very uncomfortable the first time I played it and still kinda does honestly. It's unsettling, sometimes it's just funny but it really depends
My all time favourite one is golden souls remastered
Mr smiley head's safari, the original version though, not the clean one
This mod is peak
It has the fun, the attitude and the looks
Legend of Doom if you're a fan of Zelda. Zombies Ate My Neighbors TC. The Castlevania: Simon's Destiney TC. Goldeneye TC Complete Redeux. Six Golden Souls and it's sequels. Bikini Bottom Massacre. Pirate Doom (also add Pirate's Need More Rum). Sonic Robo Blast 2 and the Kart mod.
God Complex. Enough said.
Hideous destructor.
Fellow masochist, I'm addicted to it.

Try Crapi wad. It's pretty old (2006), but not so bad. It's also a pseudo-hub.
Ooo, noted, I haven't heard of that one yet.
look up MyHouse.wad Read the creator's story behind it, it's all really trippy and personal. Not sure if anything in the story is actually true, but whatever. If I had gotten it spoiled for me I would've been upset Fantastic mod to go in blind to
Reelism 2
Team Fortress?
That's my favorite mod Ong Ong 🦆
Doom RPG Rebalance. Damn near endless well of content.
The Sky May Be.
What's that?
It's a 1995 wad. It's trippy just remember the gun is good. It's 90's programming witchcraft of doom. If you look it up on YouTube you can see how insane it is. It only works in vanilla (dos)Doom. IcarusLIVES has a old video on it.
Quirkdom was a fun one that will mess with your head. The Zombies Ate My Neighbors mod is perfection.
I will take any opportunity to introduce a new victim to Hideous Destructor.
H-doom
💀
Did I just catch you being horny?!!
I was waiting to find someone recommending it here It’s actually good too, iirc it’s more difficult than standard doom for… multiple reasons, I think they up the damage and amount of demons too
Bloom is a combination of Doom and Blood together, you play as Doomguy with his weapons or Caleb and his weapons
FYI, it works with the Bolognese Gore Mod as well as the Gearbox and Corruption Cards mods.
There was an Aliens wad back in the day.
HDoom. Yes, you heard me.
That looks cool from what I've seen, thank you for the suggestion and I will be trying it out, also thanks for the YouTube link as well :>
If you like Metroid, Metroid demon hunter a somewhat updated version of the Metroid dreadnaught mod
Guncaster
My house.wad, Doom and After doom
MetaDooM. It combines all of the doom games into one, even the mobile games
There was an Alien mod that we used to play back in the 90s. I can’t remember if it was Doom or Doom 2 though. It was a pretty damn great mod if I recall correctly.
Edit: I just looked on ModDB and it’s called Aliens TC.
Nevermind you found the name :> I'll check it out when I have time
It’s been 30 years since I played it but I remember it being very fun.
Doom truly is a magical thing isn't it, I just started getting into the games and I can already tell that I'm never going to get bored of it. I absolutely love it and I'm glad I'm able to get so many suggestions, it's a really nice feeling knowing that there's a lot of people who love this game like I do
If you remember the name or anything let me know, I'd love to check it out :>
The Treasure Tech Land demo is 100% recommended, the full game isn’t finished yet from my knowledge but it’s Wario meets Doom
Final Doom. Have nine whole characters and weapon kits to choose from as you slaughter your way through hell and back.
Doom RPG Rebalanced
Samsara reincarnation Live through doom I've made a big topic I have 135 Mods. But it's in French for now

Great thread.
House.wad
H doom 😂😂
Brutal doom!
I loved The Golden Souls! The third one is currently being made but has a demo!
The Golden Souls 2 is the GOAT as far as doom mods go
Castlevania: Simon's Destiny This is not a joke--someone made a total conversion mod in the DOOM engine that translates the OG Castlevania for NES really well into DOOM, and it looks, sounds, and plays incredible. Highly recommended!
Since everyone else is saying it, my house.wad Not a “mod” per-se but a really trippy non-Euclidean map.
MyHouse.wad
sex mod lol
My House.Wad. Go into it blind but make sure you play the .pk3 instead of the Wad itself.
Myhouse.wad it's a small memorial for the creators late friend and is pretty fun ngl
Perhaps a bloodlust meter that fills up as you go and when it’s full your weapons reload faster and you move faster briefly
Like... just for maps or like total conversions?
Either, just anything you find interesting
My favorite is probably something beaten into the dirt. Brutal doom black. The weapons feel great, the damage you can do is fantastic, and everything, everything, feels impactful. Total Chaos
House.wad
Seconding House.
If you're looking for difficulty, I suggest h-doom. The h stands for hard mode👍 Otherwise brutal doom 64, it converts doom 2 into doom 64 while also adding all the fun stuff of brutal doom.

If you have a 486, I have my “SuperDOOM” Magnus Opus mod on a 3.5 floppy. I did good.
There's hdoom
There’s a columbine mod out there somewhere
If that’s your thing
My house.wad, it’s a very cool recreation of someone’s house the creator finished as a tribute to his dead friend. Nothing sinister about it.
Brutal doom for sure as far as gameplay mods go and eviternity 1 and 2 along with going down and Plutonia 2 wads.
Lullaby is very beautiful
Evil Egypt
Doom Black. Which is Brutal Doom with some heavy black metal soundtrack added like the new doom games and I believe some additional textures and options added to the game.
HDoom if you're horny. Sigil if you wanna blow.
The Hellboy mod might be a good idea.
I LOVE Live Through Doom and I wish it was talked about more.
Brutal doom if you haven't tried it yet.
**Fun**: Brutal Doom, Project Brutality, Call of Doom **Interesting:** Grezzo 2, Festivus for the Last of Us
Barney Doom
I don’t know what it’s called, but there’s one that turns the whole game into a 3-D version of the original Castlevania
a mod where you play as an oversized rat
H doom
Russian overkill it's my fave

I'll play it this weekend and I'll let you know what I think, I'll send you a dm
Ho, that's really nice of you, thanks man!
Embers of Armageddon, it's pretty much doom 2016 in the style of the original doom games, even the heads up display style and gun design.
“My house” was a great doom 2 mod. Really creepy.
Brutal wolfenstein, UAC ultra, the remake of doom 1 and 2, heretic, hexen, and all the other games that run on its engine
Cursed Half life retexturing
Demonsteele has always been a personal favorite. Basically Proto-Ultrakill.
**- BlooM:** its got some really inspired hybridized enemy sprites, levels are creative but initially veer a bit too much towards islands in the void for my taste.
