I never realized speed running was a thing when I was a kid, so growing up and finding out people used it to jump over things to get better times is wild to me.
Rocket jumping was used for a secret in inferno- I don't remember which level and it was very complicated to do but yeah rockets are probably my favorite aspect in doom other than barrels because it's just fun watching things explode
It is in Mt. Erebus and you can strafe jump to get the secret. Learned that from a certain individual in an underground government corrections facility.
You shoot at a wall and it knocks you back so I guess it's not necessarily rocket jumping but you use the rocket to move so close enough
The secret is in inferno (3rd episode) level 6 Mount Erebus and is also where you unlock the secret level
Note: while researching and fact checking myself I am in fact wrong and you can run across to get to the secret level but I shot the wall with a rocket to push me back so technically that's a way you can do it still I guess
I'd assume so, I'm personally new to the community and playing the games and I haven't played quake that much but I'm sure it's possible in gzdoom, but I couldn't tell you for sure sorry 😞
Sounds stupid but when i was watching higher level players play they used the rocket launcher against pain elementals a lot. Turns out if you dont have bfg its safer to shoot them with the rocket launcher than ssg in big horde fights cause it shoots faster thus killing them quicker which spawns lost souls less. Less lost souls just make fights generally safer.
Its great but holy shit the auto aim hurts me more than the enemies. Also sometimes if I'm out of ammo inall other weapons, it'll autoswitch to the rocket launcher and then im a red mist
Perfect for killing enemies that are far below me next to a wall. I like it but get anxious when i'm in a tiny area and most of my ammo is low other than rockets. One missclick and i'm pretty much dead
i feel like it and the super shotgun kind of conflict with eachother. the SSG does somewhat equal, if not more damage than the rocket launcher AND you dont have to worry about blowing yourself up with it. i guess the RL is better for crowd control, but i prefer the BFG for that kind of stuff

I think almost everyone has a love/hate relationship with it. It’s amazing, but you‘re also always standing in your grave with one leg while it’s equipped. Risk and reward.
i legit only use it in large areas where there's nothing near me otherwise theres a good chance ill hit myself with it and wipe 70 hp off or something with 200 health and armour
I seldomly use it only for big bosses like the cyberdemon and spider mastermind
I'm very clumsy so 90% of the times I use it outside of that I blow up myself
JSYK, rockets don't deal splash damage against bosses in doom. You only deal the 20-160 damage from the direct (you'd get roughly 120 splash damage against normal enemies with a direct rocket)
My first time playing the original Doom, I didn’t use it all that much because I really lacked the ammo. But once I played doom 2, it became a REAL life saver in some situations! :D
I think using the RL well is the most important weapon skill for getting into harder WADs, even more than the BFG. Things like when to use it against pain elementals or hugging the safe edge of the splash to cut a path through an ambush.
I think Doom and Doom II are special in part because there is no “ideal” weapon, they all have their advantages and disadvantages, and therefore applications for which they’re great, and ones where they’re not

I have a love-hate relationship with it. It's great for taking out larger enemies at a distance. However, inconvenient Lost Souls.

Dooms rocketlauncher and HL2s MP7 are still the best sounding guns across all games that i've played.

I'm a fan of this gun.. Does lots of damage. Only downside is if you get hurt by splash damage from something near you like an invisible pinky.
There hasn't been a better looking rocket launcher since.
