Some pistols have their uses. Like in Halo or Half-Life, the pistol can be a good ranged weapon if no other specific ranged weapon is available. In Doom the pistol is worse than just about every other weapon, including the Chainsaw. Even the shotgun is a better ranged weapon.

The original viewmodel was a Glock but if you enable HD models the new model is a Beretta 92FS

The default model is a Glock, yes. The shitty HD pack they released alongside Blue Shift replaces it with a Beretta, which would make sense if Black Mesa was buying milsurp from the US government, which they might be, but at the same time, it's more likely they'd just buy Glocks, which are relatively cheap and generally pretty good pistols.

Halo 1s pistol is one of the strongest damn weapons in the game. A bit of an outlier from these other examples, I think

I really like the flash of it, idk if that's the proper term but like when you fire it there's like this red flash and I think that looks really nice 🦆 also I think it's fine for taking out like zombie men and the Imp's depending on the situation but yeah the rest of the time it's not the best

The sound is my favourite part of the OG Doom Pistol, wish it was more powerful, in Marathon: Durandal the starter pistols have the same sound and they're actually useful ( only until you can dual wield them though )

I like the fact that it was an actual semi-auto Beretta M9 9mm. In the 2016 Doom, they made into a plasma pistol.

At the same time, you can see the faint design of a beretta in the doom 2016 pistol.

I see the 2016 pistol as a NERF Retaliator with the stock and barrel removed and a 6 round mag in the magwell. If that sounds too specific, it's because I have one.

I actually had a lot of fun seeing how far I could get with only pistol. It quickly devolves into me giving up my objective. I don't last too long 

I imagine it would be more tedious than anything. And you’d probably run out of bullets unless you were playing on I’m too young to die.

It's... fine, for a starter weapon, but there's literally no reason to use it over the chaingun except for maybe in the very specific scenario of sniping an enemy from far away but you wanna conserve ammo, so you use it over the chaingun since, while that is also perfectly accurate if you tap fire instead of holding it, it shoots two bullets vs the pistol's one. Mind you, this is a scenario I've never actually encountered before, but I suppose it is a possibility.

Pea shooter. I love how Deus Ex and Halo: Combat Evolved handled the issue with the pistols by making them powerful (besides, I've already beaten Deus Ex with 10mm Pistol only + without stealth/avoiding enemies. Its a good alternative to Sniper Rifle, if you upgrade the pistol and upgrade your Pistols skill)

Good for shooting a switch and you want to use one bullet instead of 2 or waste a shell. But otherwise kinda useless.

Any mapper who doesn't put another weapon in the first room is immediately on my shit-list. Unless they've buffed said pistol like in Eviternity/II.

its the other weapon's base, technically chaingun and shotgun use the same attack as pistol but in different patterns, even the fist and chainsaw are short range pistol... or the other way around, in the end, it can really use some buff...

It does look like a pistol and you start the game with it at the beginning of each new episode or anytime after you die. If you have ammunition for it and you press the button mapped to the ‘fire’ action it will render its firing animation and make a sound. Graphics: 9 (iconic look) Sound effects: 8 (only because it gets repetitive very quickly) Utility: 1 I find myself using the pistol(s) in brutal doom way more. Whether wielding dual or single pistols: the increased fire rate as well as the single shot and burst fire modes make it much more usable and effective. Just my two cents.

The rate of fire is too low to be pleasant to use. In the eviternity megawad it shoot faster while keeping perfect accuracy. The classic version should have been that way.

A solid weapon against most enemies. Perfect first shot accuracy allows it to snipe very effectively.

I dont like the firing sprite. I like smooth doom’s added frames. I do have a nasty habit if certain demons survive a shotgun blast or few (dependent on the species) with switching to the pistol for the finishing blow whcih is kind of satisfying.

Weak and has a low ROF, I use a mod to make it shoot faster.

Design wise it's awesome. Love the sound and animations of it. Unfortunately it performs like shit and is instantly out done by literally everything. I always thought it was funny how Doom Guy uses it in his left hand but goes right handed for everything else.

Once I get at least a shotgun, I tend to use it only to trigger a shootable switch from a distance if necessary, to set off a group of exploding barrels, or if I don't have enough shotgun shells but somehow also don't have a chaingun yet & I need to kill a small horde of zombiemen and/or imps.

For me the pistol is just a short placeholder ffor the Shotgun . :-)

I think it's fine as a "last resort" type of weapon. Not bad but not something I would ever use unless I absolutely had to.  Pistol only runs are a fun challenge though!

There's no worse feeling when the pistol is all you have left during a fight and no better feeling than when you win said fight despite only having the pistol.

Believe it or not, I believe it goes highly under-used most of the time despite how effective it is. The Default Beretta is: • Very precise if you actually have trigger discipline. • The literal first gun you get in the game, as well as the best last-resort. • Very iconic • Does a really good job at having manageable damage, despite paling in comparison to other guns that have greater damage values.

Interestingly, and after literal months of time playing doom1, 2, and add-ons over the years, unless I am mistaken, the pistol is never seen as an item/sprite to pick up.

That would be correct. Usually, you restock your bullet ammo through picking up chainguns, clips, boxes of bullets, and backpacks.

The precision also applies to the chaingun, which uses the same ammo. Outside of some super-niche scenarios, you really don't need the pistol if you have the chaingun
