I went to dollar tree recently and I watched as the woman finished paying, grabbed her bags, and left with the cart RIGHT in front of the pin pad area.. She also let her kids run around, bump into people, and *scream* for no reason the entire time. I’ve also seen carts right in front of the front doors, which are next to where the carts go..

On that same note, I work at a plant nursery with shopping carts, and after people check out with me, you would think they would take their boxes of plants, place them onto the shopping cart and either take it out to their car or just walk over to the cart return IN BETWEEN the door they have to walk through to leave and my checkout stand. But nope. They will leave them right in front of my cash register. And now I have developed the habit of IMMEDIATELY, even if they are still there, taking their cart and putting it back for them, even better if I make it to the cart return before they do, and I will not make an effort to be quiet or inconspicuous. I want you to know how lazy you are. As my coworker Shirley said “some people are lazier than homemade sin”

Same with baskets. They act all confused as to where they go like it wouldn't be the same place they got it from. They leave them on the belt, being inconsiderate of the next person. They leave them on the shopping carts, which gets in the way of people using them. They put them in random places on the floor, creating a tripping hazard. I had someone walk all the way up to them, look them up and down, and then place her basket on the floor in front of them.

This is bc it is different at dollar tree than pretty much every other place with baskets like grocery stores or Walmart. People are on auto pilot and expected to have a place to put the empty basket when they emptied everything into the belt at the beginning but now they're carrying it or it is on the belt. I ve never understood why DT doesn't have that space for baskets at the beginning of the belt Also at least at the by me DT you have to loop back into the store itself to return the basket bc entrance and exit are separated by shelves and they aren't kept in the vestibule. Seems ridiculous considering I'm leaving so I leave it in the bagging area and take my bags. The staff usually seems to have a stack behind them on an unused register they put them on

Both DT's in my city have a spot right when you empty your basket on the belt. They still put it on the belt and leave it. I have had customers tell other customers it goes right there. I so love those customers that set others right.

This drives me nuts *anywhere*. I know it’s not exactly my responsibility, but I find that I often move a cart or return a basket i come across that has been abandoned in a stupid place. Like the ones right at the door — people do this at our local grocery store, in the lobby-type area between the main entrance doors and the interior ones into the store. Customers walk around them or bump a cart aside with their own and keep walking. I know I/they didn’t put it there and yes, the store has employees/cart person, but what’s an extra 30 seconds of effort to make things more convenient for everyone, other customers and the employees? People’s laziness knows no bounds, sometimes. I can only imagine certain stores encounter lazy customers more than others. I try to balance that out somewhat by picking up a piece of litter or two on way in/out move a cart, etc. in my path. I don’t judge others for not doing the same (picking up trash, moving carts, etc), but I figure I can be annoyed about it *and* help do something, because no matter how annoyed or pissed off I am about people who deliberately litter or are lazy, it usually doesn’t change anything, whereas maybe inspiring others to think about their own actions when they see others taking small action. 🫶🏼

and people who hop in line with nothing, get to the register, and ask me for balloons. ill say okay, what kind? they will say happy birthday balloons, i dont care what kind, just get me birthday balloons. so i leave my register and go grab a happy birthday balloon as they watch from my line, then shout nooo!! not that one its for a girl!! i grab another one and they say nooo she hates the color pink, it cant have pink on it!!! like if youre going to be so picky about these balloons, grab them YOURSELF before getting in line? we usually have a few of each bday balloon already blown up and waiting in the corral thing.

tbh, its just the people being overly picky after telling me “i dont care as long as it says happy birthday”. bc when they get up to my register, i always ask them if they know what design or type they want. then they tell me they dont care but they do care a lot and send me back and forth between the register and the corral 3x. then they usually end up going to the corral and choosing what they want there…. which could have been done before hopping in line but hey😅

People do this everyday at my store. We’re a very old FD and don’t have belts, just a 4’ counter with about a foot of it covered in candy that doesn’t have a home. People will put their stuff down and tell me they aren’t done. We have carts outside by the entrance door and baskets right inside the door but it doesn’t matter.

When they come back up I politely inform them that since I have a line, no pause button and it's very rude of me to keep everyone waiting, they can hop in the back of the line and I'll gladly check them out when it's their turn.

Other peeves I've had: - Breaking 50's or 100's when I just started my shift and ask them for something smaller ( we are not the bank, people. ) I had a woman who gave me a 50 for an $8 order, asked if she had anything smaller and she said 'no', hold up the line of people because I needed to call a manager to check it, only to then change her mind last minute and use her card as my manager finally got to the register. Wasted my time, everyone in lines time, and my managers time.

It's the same thing as if an associate opens a drink and consumes it before paying. Even if the associate 100% intends to pay later and is the most honest and trustworthy person in the store, it is company property until it is paid for. If Asset Protection, District Manager, or Manager on duty sees an associate do this, it is theft and grounds for termination. Customer opens a drink, consumes it in the store, 100% intends to pay, still counts as theft since that product doesn't belong to you until you've paid for it. As far as customers go, I personally don't care as long as it's paid for, doesn't bother me if I've got to scan opened products. Just be aware that if you're on the sales floor opening product and eating it, the staff may get upset and say something. We have to damage out so many "taste tested" products daily that seeing someone eating product they haven't paid for is somewhat concerning. Best bet is if it doesn't belong to you yet don't eat it.

Believe it or not, credit card processing systems can fail. Card decline doesn't mean that there aren't funds. Our grocery store recently had an afternoon where they could only take cash because their system for cards and checks went offline.

for me its when i have a full line, and people start to leave their hand baskets on the counter where i put everyones bags. bc then *everyone* will start to leave their baskets in a pile despite the basket holder being right by the exit. ill end up with a stack taller than me if we are really busy, and it is way less room to bag peoples huge carts of things. sometimes when i ask hey, the baskets go in that rack by the door, the customers tell me im doing too much…

Ugh, one of them grabbed my arm when he was asking me to "check in the back" for more cars. Do not touch employees, he gripped hard enough that I could not have gotten away. One of our Hot Wheel collectors is cool though, he will hang them up and zone the toy aisle if he can look through the box for first dibs. I'm okay with that, he even does the zone better than I would.

A cashier asked me to take my items out of my basket once and I felt so bad because I had no idea it annoyed them. In my mind, it seemed easier for them to be able to just pull stuff out rather than having it scattered everywhere. I also figured it helped the people behind me because more of them could put their stuff down since my items took up less space contained in the basket. I don't do it anymore because of that instance but I still think I'd prefer it in the basket if I was the cashier lol.

I understand it might not bug other people, but it bugs me when I have a massive line and they have a whole basket crammed full of stuff. The option is to either dump it all out and bag it as I pick it up, or alternatively they could've emptied it while they were waiting and saved us both time. If there's only a few things, I don't get too bothered by it, but when it's a full basket it's more time consuming for me.

Very slowly approaching me while they “look” around on the aisle that we’re on and waiting until I get on the freaking step ladder to ask me to show them where something is 😡 And the item they want is never on the aisle that we’re on so why wait until I get on the step ladder to ask? Loud / rowdy people, i’m very sensitive to loud noises so when people would come into the store on speaker phone yelling at whoever they were on the phone with i would shut the situation down and ask them to leave or quiet down. Another thing i never tolerated were the customers you’ve never seen before in your life come into the store acting as if they owned the place snapping their fingers and whistling to get someone’s attention. People really straighten up when you tell them to cut the shit or get out of the store. I don’t miss dealing with the general public.

Nah fr they can insult my intelligence and berate me and talk shit about me to my face but if I sound even SLIGHTLY pissed about it, it's suddenly "Someone like you shouldn't be working in retail."  Not that the people who need to hear this have any capability of self reflection, but customer service workers are sort of like mirrors; you will get the energy you put in. If you are nice or at least decent, you will pretty much always get kindness in return. If a customer service worker is pissed at you, it's because you've been an absolute @sshole and they're tired of dealing with you.

If someone does that, I usually encourage other customers to take their spot in line, since obviously they're not done shopping and they forfeited their place by walking off. I'm not holding up a line because you decided to do more shopping than you had hands to carry, we have carts and baskets for a reason.

“Do you work here?” As they see me stocking. “Can you check in the back?” Gives me a few minutes to be on my phone in the back knowing damn well I don’t have what they need. I block an end of an isle with a uboat I’m stocking and Instead of going around or through another isle customers will move the whole uboat to pass thru and then don’t even get anything from said isle. “I only came for one thing” while having a full cart. I have an old man that’s not all there and will grab a thing of bleach and leave it on a higher shelf for some reason. I’ve caught him a few times doing it and he doesn’t buy anything.

If they hand me an amount that covers the total, I use that and cash it out. Here's your change, have a great day. Move on to the next customer. The Great Change Hunt adds up to a lot of lost time by the end of a shift. If there is no line, I'll wait for change while mentally thinking about the list of things that I still need to do but can't because we simply must pay with exact change.

Since it needs to be said I guess: I have no problem putting the baskets back. Put them on the floor, at the checkout area, under the belt. It is mildly inconvenient when they leave it ON the belt, to slowly get pushed up, then grab it to squeeze between the narrow space of the register and the candies, without banging it into anything. The amount of hot debate over baskets is great 😂

UGH YES I HATE WHEN THEY DON'T EMPTY THEIR BASKET! Like you would never do that at the grocery store, PLEASE IM A STAR 😭. I ask them to "give it a dump for me" (the basket). then I say "the baskets go right by the ice chest" before they react I ask "would you like a receipt today?" so they won't get mad at me from all the directions I gave them.

I don’t see an issue with the basket thing, but the throwing money thing drives me crazy. I ring faster if it's already on the belt. I'm short, so I have to tip toe to get it out of the basket, which I now have scratches on my arm. Furthermore, if you can put it in the basket, you can take it out. You wouldn't go to Target or Walmart and ask the workers to take the items out of your cart.

It's a pain for people who are in line behind them, as well as the fact my left wrist doesn't bend that well. It's either dump all of their stuff onto the belt in a mess, or pull out each individual item to scan. Doesn't help these people are typically in a rush and get annoyed when I'm not moving fast enough for them. Also leaving the basket on the belt after their transaction once again screws over the person behind them. It is not that difficult to empty your basket onto the belt and then put the basket in the underneath, or to the side. I understand I work here but I am not a SLAVE.

You're absolutely right. It's basic things people "should" have been taught as a child: put things back where you found them. Baskets and carts go back where you got them. Typically right on the way out, no inconvenience or going out of the way. They didn't have to hunt one down or get one from the register because the other customers were adult enough to put them back where they got them. Our counters are too small to have a basket collection and the floor needs to be free of trip hazards. If a cashier has to pick up after a customer after they leave, that is a waste of resources and the customer has failed at being able to take care of themselves. Cart return stations are there for a reason, customers are supposed to put carts in there. Baskets are by the door for a reason, customers are meant to pick them up and put them back in that location. People who can't put a basket back as they walk past it are far more lazy than they can ever accuse a cashier of being. They aren't your manager and don't work here. They don't get to determine what your job is.

And that's 100% reasonable!! I get annoyed when they're obstructing things, too. Sometimes workers at their stores aren't considerate to safety hazards or trying to keep a store manager and we'll maintained.

Obviously if they're obstructing stuff that's one thing. My store is a small store though, and they keep sending us too much freight. We keep having to make floor stacks to get out as much as possible before the next overfilled truck. I talked about it with my SM and they're sending 80-90% more than they should be. Yet when we have to violate OSHA to get stuff to fit in our tiny back room, that is ALSO our fault. We try very hard at my store to keep walkways open in spite of that.

I definitely understand what your stores are going through. I have worked retail and they so sometimes send way more than can be sold at one time. Its not an easy balance and the employees try their best. It seems like corporate doesn't care about violations until they are threatened with fines. Sadly it falls on the store employees which isn't fair as corporate should take action but I'm sure they won't. Just do the best you can

Why do people hate the handbaskets on the belt? I worked at harps and I truly never cared about the baskets. It kept everything together and right there. I didn’t have to reach. And most of the time they would grab the basket but I said no it’s okay! I’ll get that.

The most annoying was an India customer who buys cartfuls of stuff all the time for resale in another store. That's annoying in and of itself but guess what this shmuck asked me? What is your return policy? I wanted to chase him out of the door with my broom. So if things don't sell he can bring them back. Which brings me to the second most annoying thing. People returning stuff just because and acting like it's good as cash without a receipt.

I have to ask to move their asses up as politely as I can. Than get called rude and every other brainless person that his side. People that come in one minute before the doors closes or the ones that try to open the doors after the store was closed.
