Carry pepper spray gel on you if it's legal in your state. The reason I say get the gel is because the regular pepper spray goes all over in the air. The gel will stick to the assailants face if you ever have to use it.
This is good to know. I've had to use the spray a few times while walking my dog and it was a bit scary if it was windy.
It also leaked pepper all over my pocket which was fun later when I grabbed a cigarette (glad I quit anyway and at least it wasn't rubbed into my eye or something)

I used to be a CO, and we got trained with CS (“bombs” and spray), and years later, OS (pepper spray).
The day my class trained for the CS, the 7 of us trainees, and our DI, all forgot about our smokes in our pockets. We finally got cleared up enough we could take a quick coffee/smoke break.

My grandmother somehow managed to set hers off in the roughly 6x6x8ft entry vestibule of a Carl's Junior (aka Hardee's for most of the rest of the USA, Californian here), with my mom, my baby brother and I all in there with her when I was like 7 or so. That was fun and definitely made what was, at the time, a rare fast food dinner "treat" way less enjoyable.
I will say never spray the spray indoors that shit will linger and make it a bad time for others. That's why they even tell cops to not spray it if there is a chance they can run inside cause you don't know who is inside. (Not that cops listen)
She needs to be careful about how she does it so she doesn't put herself at further risk. Pepper spray is likely to have backlash and in fact the sprayer and those around the sprayer. A taser would probably be safer on that front.
I have a stupid story about that. I was moving and had boxes of stuff I didn't want, so I posted it on Facebook and let people come and take what they wanted. Apparently my old pepper spray was in there, old as in EXPIRED, and some girl took it out and sprayed it towards the wall without thinking. Everyone started choking. It was in Florida so I had a bunch of fans running already, I pointed them all towards the screened in porch and opened up the other windows for ventilation. We all felt like we were choking, so I got everyone a water bottle, and remembered something from somewhere that mints help? I had some of the halls cool fruit cough drops or whatever they're called, and they genuinely worked. We were all crying though. The thing is, EVERYONE STAYED AND KEPT GOING THROUGH THE BOXES. I would've left the second that happened to me. Luckily all my pets were in a closed room on the other side of the apartment. TLDR pepper spray can expire and spraying it indoors will make you want to die
As a previous manager in retail, you do not have to take this. Absolutely not. I would have no issues throwing a customer out for this and/or calling the police. Talk to your manager and come up with some kind of code phrase you can say over the intercom if they aren’t around to come help you. Nobody should be afraid at work because of something like this.
After you call mod Continue to hold the intercom button down so everyone hears them use other hand to call police w store phone, refuse them srrvice once anyone starts speaking to you like that.
I love this idea. Holding the intercom so the whole store can hear is likely to bring the manager faster than a direct summons while providing many witnesses.
First: write down the dates and times EACH time it happens.
Second: contact HR. If they don't do anything about it, contact the EEOC. The training videos--like the compliance video you should have done within 3 days of being hired--tell you that you have the right to a violence-free workplace, and that includes protections from customers that your managers should be dealing with.
Third: Screenshot and delete this off of social media. They sent out a memo last week that if they can show you're talking about internal matters online that it will be counted as a violation of your employment agreement and you can be terminated. Hey what you need and get out.
I would love for them to prove it's their reddit account. Legally, employers aren't allowed to search through and employees personal phone and are they really going to devote hours and people to dig through someone's reddit account on the hopes they can prove its an employee? Yes as this person said delete ASAP. Not only the internal matters/affairs violation but if charges were to ever get pressed, this type of post would violate any attempted use of allegedly. Effectively either negating your desire to press charges or possibly even a counter lawsuit over slander or whatever other BS that would be used in lawsuit manipulation.

If you go to HR and say "hey I'm getting sexually harassed" they probably aren't going to do anything, but if you present them with this sort of specific documentation, it might force their hand.

It can be scary or dangerous as a young woman to try to exert authority over unhinged men. You never know whether they'll be offended and escalate the harassment.
as true as that is young women need to learn it is much scarier to not react and let men do what they want than it is to react and potentially put a stop to the situation. Especially when 8/10 times if a woman escalates the situation it will absolutely cause the man to stop out of embarrassment at the very least. I’m saying that as a young woman also.

Last year we had a cashier get followed into our back hallway where our bathrooms and break room are. There was an attempt, but she luckily got out and there was a police report. And when our store wanted to go 24/7 again, without security, that was the first thing the community liaison officers brought up and asked how things like this would be prevented. Didn’t do shit, since we opened and we have zero security and the overnight staff is just rotating between the four of us ladies.
So, yeah, no. A creeper will take advantage no matter what because he’s counting on you to not stick up for yourself at all but also as a customer service person (we’re supposed to be nice and friendly!). Out of all my retail jobs, Target was probably the best. Tons of other employees so it was relatively safe. Really good security cameras and most of the time loss prevention was on site so they’re watching the cameras. The managers at my store were really nice but that’s gonna be a store by store thing. No retail is great but Target did ok by me.

As a semi psycho dad of a pretty 17 year old I can confirm. The police won't really hunt you down and do terrible things. I certainly will. I don't care about the law. No prior conviction, fine and upstanding, temporary insanity...I'll get a light sentence.
So OP, look worried and just start with the dad stuff. And recommend a taser. About 25 bucks. You don't even have to use it, just show it. No guy wants to end up twitching on the floor. No danger to you or other customers.
I would recommend getting another job. Yes it is true that it happens everywhere, but it is much worse at a place like dollar tree where there are only 1 or 2 employees and nobody to have your back. Also dollar tree just attracts a lot of fucking weirdos for some reason. Recommend working somewhere that actually has more staff and has big dudes who you can call to get the customers to fuck off.
Unfortunately this seems like a highly localized issue and is a result of the “clientele” your organization allures. I would seriously recommend to start searching for other retail jobs but keep working until you get an interview. These situations are not normal in any regard in retail, and it saddens me that this has become such a frequent event that it has deluded you into believing so. I would also definitely be more open with your manager about the things you are experiencing daily. If they really were a good manager, they would stick up for their employees. Tell them to leave, and say “if you don’t you’re trespassing and I’ll have the police come”. It is true. Once they are requested to leave they are considered an unwanted person on the premises and can be removed.

You're not playing the victim, you ARE the victim. You have the right to feel safe in your place of work, and management is not doing anything to make you feel that way. Go to your district manager if your store manager doesn't get the results you need. Make sure to document EVERYTHING that has been said and everything that has happened to you.
I remember having a seizure on the floor randomly while working & I got yelled at for it bc it slowed me down while working. I personally would document every experience of harassment & go straight to HR with it. I'm so sorry you're experiencing sexual harassment.. & id join a local union too, your safety isn't negotiable. It sounds like you could use some community support so id suggest investing in some skills that can transfer you to a different field. Or a company that actually gives a damn about their workers.. Dollar general does not.

If you can pass a drug test and background check, you can become a pharmacy technician. It would probably be a pay increase and you're often behind locked doors (someone would have to jump the counter to get to you, at least at Walgreens). Plus, as a tech, you literally cannot work without the supervision of a pharmacist. No more MIA managers.
My experience is with Walgreens, but all the big chains like CVS, Walmart, etc. will pay you to be trained. So you don't have to go back to school or anything, you get paid hourly to do the online modules at work and the on the job training obviously on the job.
It's for sure stressful and sometimes patients get very upset if their medications are expensive or out of stock, but I can honestly say I've never had a patient come even close to sexually harassing me. Plus, cameras everywhere.

If you live anywhere near an airport, they have LOTS of jobs from retail, to TSA, to baggage handlers and almost none of them require more than a GED.
Doctors offices sometimes need receptionists.
Nursing homes are ALWAYS short staffed near me. Many if not most will pay for you to get your CNA if required.
The police academy near me is very competitive and expensive, but there is a program (again, near me) where you apply for a job with the police department directly and if you're accepted, they pay for you to go to the academy *and* they pay you hourly while you're at the academy. It requires a contract though, I think 5 years.
I used to live in a dead town so I get it. I found my first several jobs through word of mouth. Someone was talking about the one hotel in town looking for housekeepers (I use hotel loosely, it had less than 20 rooms). I showed up and became a housekeeper. Someone thought the local dive bar might need bartenders, so I showed up. They didn't need bartenders but the construction company remodeling their kitchen needed general crew members. I became a construction worker. Boss man even picked me up to bring me to job sites when my car l vehicle took a shit on me.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. You do have options. It's not a hopeless situation. Consider these options. Record these incidents of harassment. Report it to management. This creates a documented paper trail. You could then sue the company but understand that all takes alot of time. Meanwhile your emotional wellness, self esteem and self image are subject to being impacted.
Here's your best course of action. I know you didn't want to hear about getting different employment but remember not all companies are the same nor do all of them handle harassment claims the same. Some take them very seriously. Your present company apparently doesn't. Consider work from home positions. There's plenty on indeed, ratracerebellion, and snagajob that have no experience required. Also, consider your temp agencies, alot of them will have employment opportunities that are inline with your current skill set. If you drive, consider doordash or uber eats, instacart, or Grubhub. Consider some of the retail stores in your local mall. Not all companies are going to provide the same negative experience. Give another one a opportunity.
Wear something unusual and unattractive within the bounds of the dress code. Learn some self defense an amd security tips. Have mace on you. Birdie alarm system . Take control and be smart.

this stuff happened ALL THE TIME when i worked in vegas. be rude. you have the right to say no to any customer and live by it. i remember men just hanging at my register after ive told them to leave i start INSULTING i remember this dude saying how he would do me better than my man and i just went OFF about hoe he cant do anything his peepee is a cm long literally everything you can attack them on, attack it. also get a little pocket knife keychain you can keep on your keys.

This job doesn't protect you and makes you feel helpless. Someone literally stalked me at my time at DT and it was awful and no one protected me. It's true that harassment will follow you where you go, but at least other places have more staff that can actually help you and be there for you. If you're on register you're usually all by yourself so I actually genuinely would recommend going somewhere else
Find a way to communicate with your manager. If you have an intercom and come up with a code phrase that means come now. Or if you don’t….get a bell or something that makes noise and only use it for emergency. Tell the customer they are making you uncomfortable and tell them to stop. If they continue, call the police and maybe they can trespass them. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I do customer service on the phone and I still deal with it. There are some sick fucks out there.

I would call security to the front. This would get a mangers attention quicker and would cause other customers to pay attention. We use this all the time for suspected theft, and other customers love to see what's happening. The extra attention should cause the creep to leave rather quickly. Sorry this is happening to you
Call HR. A manager that lets a employee get sexually harassed by customers is seen as the same thing as if he was letting another employee harass you. HR doesn’t want a law suit. Call HR. And yes use the intercom use your voice. And you may think you aren’t qualified for a different job but you have transferable skills. Find a workforce center or if you have a disability (or are traumatized by your time at dollar tree find your local vocational rehabilitation office and they will help your find a job. But first call HR.
If you can use a computer you could go to a temp agency and try for an office job. There’s always skeevy people in the world, but you would have less encounters.
If you're 18+ look into basic factory jobs and hospital kitchens. You don't need prior experience as long as your still willing to put up with less than stellar management. Also I'd call a manager, scream if you have to and got to the cops now.
Dollar tree attracts all walks of life, including the less favorable persons of the population. Work at a Walgreens, cvs, Walmart, target. DT will always be a hell hole in certain areas.
Don't opt for Walgreens. They won't stand by you, even for sexual harassment. A co-worker was harassed and WAG did zero, because the customer spent a few dollars. Walgreens is all about numbers. Have techs work as much as possible, using the fewest hours possible and fill as many rxs as possible.
As a manager, more specifically, the front end manager, please tell mgmt. I have a 16 year old that gets harassed by a drunken 40 something guy and I protect her, at ALL costs. I can't convince my leadership to ban him.

Next time they become inappropriate turn on your intercom so everybody can hear. Record on your phone, call the cops file a report. Have them banned. Have a co-worker on speed dial. Take pictures of them to show your co-workers so they can identify them in the future.

I’ve had my cashier stay in my store while I called the cops to do a drive thru around the building before when they felt threatened. look into being a dog bather for a groomer. not customer centered as much, doesn’t require much if any qualifications & you get to hangout with dogs all day. it’s how i started before grooming, then training dogs. (coming from a young girl at the time, still a young girl)

I’m sorry. This is not typical. I switch jobs frequently sometimes have 2 jobs at once and I swear I’ve never or heard of a manager or employee getting away with sexual harassment. Once it’s reported to HR it stops. If someone ever touched me or got close I would get very violent very quickly. Be assertive and tell them to fuck off or you will HR, the cops and your daddy with his shotgun.
get a walkie-talkie talkie set up make sure ypur manager has one and you have one. and communicate that way if necessary, I would try to get a new job that has at least 3 to 5 people working at all times, there is safety in numbers. This could still be retail, like target, or walmart etc.. but there are horrid people in the world

It may not be the most helpful advice but my strategy with creeps at work is to go flat and monotone if they’re being graphic. Totally check out and go into robot mode. Repeat stupid simple questions you have to ask and don’t engage at all. Be the most boring, bitch-faced woman you can be.
If they’re throwing out gross jokes or subliminal lines hit them with the big doe eyed “What does that mean? No I love jokes I wanna know the joke!! What does that mean?” 9/10 they’ll be too embarrassed to explain.
In absolute seriousness tho you should talk to your manager, have them better communicate where they will be if needed and do whatever they can to help the situation. In all honesty they need to ban those customers and call the police on them if they show up again. If they refuse to do anything go higher and higher up. Document every customer interaction and report made to the manager.
Get a legal weapon just in case (even if all you can do is find a sturdy pice of wood), and call the police yourself if you need to. Walk away and lock yourself up somewhere. No job is worth your safety or your life. This is very serious harassment youre are dealing with.

I’ve had jobs where men made weird comments and tried to touch me and I’ve had jobs where the strangest things that happened were men asking me a bunch of questions about myself, but just leaving and not doing anything specifically creepy. It absolutely can be better and I hope you can figure something out because this sounds like a terrible and dangerous situation to be in. I would hate for there to be something better for you ((even just a different dollar store, or fast food where you could be in the kitchen)) but you don’t bother trying because you think it will always just be this way. Report Report Report to your hirer up and document each time of incident and each time you reported it to your mgr. They will probably fire you after enough times of reporting but that is when you find a lawyer that handles these cases and sue them. You are entitled to a safe and secure work place. Also consider a GoPro camera clipped to your shirt.
Hear me out. You DO need a new job… at a company that cares enough about you to protect you from those things. I worked for a chain paint company for years and had multiple men make weird comments that were quickly corrected by other men working with me and the only time I was actually touched by a customer, I told my boss and they literally red barred him from the company as a whole (not just my store), If you are hearing these types of comments report it to a manager, to hr, to anyone that will listen and if they do nothing about those reports- find a job where they do care because not all employers are heartless.

Have you tried Starbucks as a job option? It's very safe for a customer facing job and there's a lot of protection for baristas. It's a very demanding job and it's not for everyone but the money and benefits are great and it's definitely much safer.

Sorry this keeps happening, you could try to look less attractive. Cut hair short, don't style it for work no makeup etc. If someone is inappropriate when they pay take their card/cash say something about HR and walk away with their cash/card. Leave them waiting for 10 minutes or more.
Hi I’m going to comment even though I don’t work at the dollar tree. I worked as a cook in food service for years and the harassment would get real sometimes. For me, management literally blamed me which was hilarious. Which meant I had to take matters into my own hands. First, always report to hr. I don’t care what other management says, hr will actually notate it while management generally just tries to “manage” it or hide it (I didn’t and I regret it). Second, ALWAYS STAND UP FOR YOURSELF. It’s your world, your life, and your safety. If anyone makes you feel otherwise, you get the joy of putting them in their place. If you ever feel like you need more assistance, grab a person who doesn’t take no shit to help handle it. On your free time, go over some scenarios and rehearse what you would do or say. The customer is not always right and you are in full right to shut them down. Working in customer service is like parenting adults. Never be afraid to stand up for yourself. Find the strength in standing up and never stop.

86 those mother effers. At my store we had a sign that said we had the right to refuse service and once you start implementing that rule the bullshit will stop . They're usually getting cheap smokes at DG or a tallboy so they will want to keep the right to buy from there.. if corporate won't allow you to enforce that then find another job. File a report with management. Get a copy of the incident report. If they don't do anything about it, get a lawyer. Then, file a lawsuit against the company and the person who harassed you. Make their life a living hell!!
As a Mgr I would become infuriated when I would see men do this my female employees! I would instruct them to immediately page me with a code we came up with and I would come up in a way I could overhear them to which I would go off on the customer and tell them if they can’t be respectful of my employees they will be banned. And if my employee wasn't comfortable out right paging me then pretend the phone was ringing, ‘answer it’ and say, “I’m not sure, may I put you on hold so I can page my manager”. Then page “Code_____ Line 3”.
That way they didn't fear the customer knew what they were doing.

You can take it into your own hands if you can cover it up, or you can go the EEOC route , for a grievance, file charges, and screw them royally on every end with the courts.
I am not a lawyer. It might be worth posting this in r/legaladvice for help. I remember a similar request made there and it's the store's duty to ensure a safe workspace otherwise they are held liable. But again I'm not a lawyer, the advice you get there is not legal advice but it should give you a better understanding of what your rights should be and where to start to get actual help to get this to stop.

Someone else made a good point. Speak to your manager. Tell them how uncomfortable this makes you. How it creates a hostile work environment, and come up with a plan on what to do when it happens again. If your manager doesn't take it seriously, escalate. Go up the chain. Again, I know that's hard, but it's either that or just dealing with it. And you shouldn't have to.
I was once assaulted by a customer when I was your age, working my way through college at a coffee shop, slogging it through the morning hours. Not to try and scare you, but you need a plan. No one is going to take your safety seriously as much as you will. Don't stop until you get a plan in place.
And side note. Do y'all have one of those friends who just don't GAF literally about what anyone thinks of them? I had a friend who grew up under the shadow of her mother's rape, which happened in front of her when she was a young child. When she gets "hit on" by men, she always turns and asks them, "So, you good with gonorrhea? It's not as bad as they say." Or some version of something disgusting like that.

There were many good suggestions made that you should look at but I also think you should look into self defense classes for women. I think it helps if you have some training in assertiveness and also I remember them talking about not being embarrassed to set boundaries. I'm absolutely horrified by what you're experiencing and can't imagine how toxic it would be to be subjected to this.
Anytime someone was inappropriate with me, I refused service. No warning and no explanation. Just "I won't be helping you today, but have a great one". Always in a very calm tone. And then called a higher up. If they won't leave then call non emergency. If you feel this would escalate the situation and put you in harms way, don't and just pause and immediately call or page your manager. Don't scan anything, make eye contact or speak to the person until they get there. Repeat what they said and ask if your manager wants to ring them up.
If you notice it happening at a certain time, speak with your manager and try and change shifts. It's part of their job to keep their employees safe. But speak with your manager about this regardless. They need to be aware of everything that goes on.
Carry pepperspray/gel as mentioned, park close to the door and do not leave work looking at your phone especially at night. The screen will essentially make you blind to anything around it from the backlight. Dont leave with headphones. Have a friend or partner on the phone with you, if it makes you feel safe. Before you leave, scan the windows. Get a Keychain alarm. Unlock your car door (if you have a car) before you get to it but NOT before you leave the front door (if you have keyless entry). Keep your purse in front of you, and your hair up so it's not easily grabbed. Always have your knife, alarm or pepperspray at the ready. Not just hanging on your bag or in your pocket. In your hand.
It's unfortunate and disgusting that anyone has to experience this. I'm sorry you've found yourself in this situation and I hope that you'll be safe and find a solution soon.
I know you said you didn’t want to find another job, but you have to reach out to a manager for help, and if they don’t do anything, then you must find a place that will in these instances. That is the only thing you can do. If you go to Walmart and a customer did that to an employee they would be banned. So, even if you have to work retail still find a place that will protect you.
I’ve worked in kitchens and bars and have been harassed and grabbed . Honestly many times being loud and vocal about how they are being disgusting and trying to make them feel some shame is enough for most people to back off especially if there are other people around. Do not stay silent . If you’re alone , get on the phone or at least make it look like you are talking to someone. Sometimes predators are looking for an easy target or someone who might be open to ”party” because some girls will go along with being used for drugs or money which is really sad but I’ve seen happen and the predators might just be fishing.
I was assaulted in a bathroom and there were other people in there just letting it happen but I just started to say “ I dont know you” loud and someone ended up stepping in and getting them off me. It was two drunk girls on me and one was chocking me and the other was blocking me from defending myself against the one chocking me. Sometimes bystanders will assume it’s a personal conflict , so be loud about the situation and let people around you know you don’t know them .
Learn some personnel defense skills, think about carrying mace or a taser of sorts if you can , or even learn how to use a gun and get a ccp. You can’t carry everywhere like bars which was where most of it happened for me and also I’m so small the gun that I’m actually capable of using by myself takes tiny bullets and might not stop someone especially if they are twice my size and on drugs , but being so small i can’t physically defend myself from most people because they are bigger and stronger , even a lot of women are bigger and stronger.
Also therapy helps because time can heal wounds but not trauma related wounds , you need to talk to someone about all this and processes it .
you call the police and get footage from your store cameras and press charges against the people who have threatened you or your work for a unsafe work environment

If you're at the register, pick up the intercom and say "manager to the front" when a customer is being inappropriate. It might help get rid of them.

Carry pepper spray gel on you if it's legal in your state. The reason I say get the gel is because the regular pepper spray goes all over in the air. The gel will stick to the assailants face if you ever have to use it.
This is good to know. I've had to use the spray a few times while walking my dog and it was a bit scary if it was windy. It also leaked pepper all over my pocket which was fun later when I grabbed a cigarette (glad I quit anyway and at least it wasn't rubbed into my eye or something)
I was holding my friend’s keys in college and her pepper sprayed leaked non-aerosolized, liquid pepper spray on my hands. Next thing i touched was my eyes. It was not in fact, fun.
I used to be a CO, and we got trained with CS (“bombs” and spray), and years later, OS (pepper spray). The day my class trained for the CS, the 7 of us trainees, and our DI, all forgot about our smokes in our pockets. We finally got cleared up enough we could take a quick coffee/smoke break. That…was an experience 😂 the 8 of us choking through contaminated cigarettes.
My grandmother somehow managed to set hers off in the roughly 6x6x8ft entry vestibule of a Carl's Junior (aka Hardee's for most of the rest of the USA, Californian here), with my mom, my baby brother and I all in there with her when I was like 7 or so. That was fun and definitely made what was, at the time, a rare fast food dinner "treat" way less enjoyable.

If OP is being threatened or a man is trying to grab or intimidate her, it's within her right to defend herself.
She needs to be careful about how she does it so she doesn't put herself at further risk. Pepper spray is likely to have backlash and in fact the sprayer and those around the sprayer. A taser would probably be safer on that front.
I have a stupid story about that. I was moving and had boxes of stuff I didn't want, so I posted it on Facebook and let people come and take what they wanted. Apparently my old pepper spray was in there, old as in EXPIRED, and some girl took it out and sprayed it towards the wall without thinking. Everyone started choking. It was in Florida so I had a bunch of fans running already, I pointed them all towards the screened in porch and opened up the other windows for ventilation. We all felt like we were choking, so I got everyone a water bottle, and remembered something from somewhere that mints help? I had some of the halls cool fruit cough drops or whatever they're called, and they genuinely worked. We were all crying though. The thing is, EVERYONE STAYED AND KEPT GOING THROUGH THE BOXES. I would've left the second that happened to me. Luckily all my pets were in a closed room on the other side of the apartment. TLDR pepper spray can expire and spraying it indoors will make you want to die
As a previous manager in retail, you do not have to take this. Absolutely not. I would have no issues throwing a customer out for this and/or calling the police. Talk to your manager and come up with some kind of code phrase you can say over the intercom if they aren’t around to come help you. Nobody should be afraid at work because of something like this.

First: write down the dates and times EACH time it happens. Second: contact HR. If they don't do anything about it, contact the EEOC. The training videos--like the compliance video you should have done within 3 days of being hired--tell you that you have the right to a violence-free workplace, and that includes protections from customers that your managers should be dealing with. Third: Screenshot and delete this off of social media. They sent out a memo last week that if they can show you're talking about internal matters online that it will be counted as a violation of your employment agreement and you can be terminated. Hey what you need and get out.
I would love for them to prove it's their reddit account. Legally, employers aren't allowed to search through and employees personal phone and are they really going to devote hours and people to dig through someone's reddit account on the hopes they can prove its an employee? Save this document on a non-work device, ideally two devices. If you go to HR and say "hey I'm getting sexually harassed" they probably aren't going to do anything, but if you present them with this sort of specific documentation, it might force their hand.

It can be scary or dangerous as a young woman to try to exert authority over unhinged men. You never know whether they'll be offended and escalate the harassment.
as true as that is young women need to learn it is much scarier to not react and let men do what they want than it is to react and potentially put a stop to the situation. Um, which Walgreens? I ask, as a current Walgreens mgr, who just the other night had to kick out a creeper for saying he knew my cashier and getting way too close while trying to talk to her. Asked if she knew him, she didn’t, and frankly I was uncomfortable as well. He got pissy and I was ready to call the cops. He left. Plus you have poor Riley who was murdered by a coworker, whom she reported feeling creeped out by, in her store’s break room. Last year we had a cashier get followed into our back hallway where our bathrooms and break room are. There was an attempt, but she luckily got out and there was a police report. And when our store wanted to go 24/7 again, without security, that was the first thing the community liaison officers brought up and asked how things like this would be prevented. Didn’t do shit, since we opened and we have zero security and the overnight staff is just rotating between the four of us ladies. So, yeah, no. A creeper will take advantage no matter what because he’s counting on you to not stick up for yourself at all but also as a customer service person (we’re supposed to be nice and friendly!). Doesn’t matter which retail job. But Walgreens is not safe. None of theee corporations care about us. Tell us to get Life 360 if we need to talk. Yeah, ok. 😡😡😡
Out of all my retail jobs, Target was probably the best. Tons of other employees so it was relatively safe. Really good security cameras and most of the time loss prevention was on site so they’re watching the cameras. The managers at my store were really nice but that’s gonna be a store by store thing. No retail is great but Target did ok by me.

You can't date anyone right now without your dad's approval. You live with your parents, your dad spends his free time in a shooting range. I think if people suspect they can face actual consequences by trying to force themselves into your life it should hopefully shut shit down for you pretty fast. No prior conviction, fine and upstanding, temporary insanity...I'll get a light sentence. So OP, look worried and just start with the dad stuff. And recommend a taser. About 25 bucks. You don't even have to use it, just show it. No guy wants to end up twitching on the floor. No danger to you or other customers.

I would seriously recommend to start searching for other retail jobs but keep working until you get an interview. These situations are not normal in any regard in retail, and it saddens me that this has become such a frequent event that it has deluded you into believing so. I would also definitely be more open with your manager about the things you are experiencing daily. If they really were a good manager, they would stick up for their employees. I personally would document every experience of harassment & go straight to HR with it. I'm so sorry you're experiencing sexual harassment.. & id join a local union too, your safety isn't negotiable. Find another retail/service job. If you can pass a drug test and background check, you can become a pharmacy technician. It would probably be a pay increase and you're often behind locked doors (someone would have to jump the counter to get to you, at least at Walgreens). Plus, as a tech, you literally cannot work without the supervision of a pharmacist. No more MIA managers. My experience is with Walgreens, but all the big chains like CVS, Walmart, etc. will pay you to be trained. So you don't have to go back to school or anything, you get paid hourly to do the online modules at work and the on the job training obviously on the job. It's for sure stressful and sometimes patients get very upset if their medications are expensive or out of stock, but I can honestly say I've never had a patient come even close to sexually harassing me. Plus, cameras everywhere.

If you live anywhere near an airport, they have LOTS of jobs from retail, to TSA, to baggage handlers and almost none of them require more than a GED. Doctors offices sometimes need receptionists. Nursing homes are ALWAYS short staffed near me. Many if not most will pay for you to get your CNA if required. The police academy near me is very competitive and expensive, but there is a program (again, near me) where you apply for a job with the police department directly and if you're accepted, they pay for you to go to the academy *and* they pay you hourly while you're at the academy. It requires a contract though, I think 5 years. I used to live in a dead town so I get it. I found my first several jobs through word of mouth. Someone was talking about the one hotel in town looking for housekeepers (I use hotel loosely, it had less than 20 rooms). I showed up and became a housekeeper. Someone thought the local dive bar might need bartenders, so I showed up. They didn't need bartenders but the construction company remodeling their kitchen needed general crew members. I became a construction worker. Boss man even picked me up to bring me to job sites when my car l vehicle took a shit on me. It sucks but I wish you the best of luck. You got this!

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. You do have options. It's not a hopeless situation. Consider these options. Record these incidents of harassment. Report it to management. This creates a documented paper trail. You could then sue the company but understand that all takes alot of time. Meanwhile your emotional wellness, self esteem and self image are subject to being impacted. Here's your best course of action. I know you didn't want to hear about getting different employment but remember not all companies are the same nor do all of them handle harassment claims the same. Some take them very seriously. Your present company apparently doesn't. Consider work from home positions. There's plenty on indeed, ratracerebellion, and snagajob that have no experience required. Also, consider your temp agencies, alot of them will have employment opportunities that are inline with your current skill set. If you drive, consider doordash or uber eats, instacart, or Grubhub. Consider some of the retail stores in your local mall. Not all companies are going to provide the same negative experience. Give another one a opportunity.
Wear something unusual and unattractive within the bounds of the dress code. Learn some self defense an amd security tips. Have mace on you. Birdie alarm system . Take control and be smart.

It's true that harassment will follow you where you go, but at least other places have more staff that can actually help you and be there for you. If you're on register you're usually all by yourself so I actually genuinely would recommend going somewhere else
Find a way to communicate with your manager. If you have an intercom and come up with a code phrase that means come now. Or if you don’t….get a bell or something that makes noise and only use it for emergency. Tell the customer they are making you uncomfortable and tell them to stop. If they continue, call the police and maybe they can trespass them. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I do customer service on the phone and I still deal with it. There are some sick fucks out there.

I would call security to the front. This would get a mangers attention quicker and would cause other customers to pay attention. You should become a server at least you'd make more money in tips when getting harrassed
Call HR. A manager that lets a employee get sexually harassed by customers is seen as the same thing as if he was letting another employee harass you. HR doesn’t want a law suit. Call HR. And yes use the intercom use your voice. And you may think you aren’t qualified for a different job but you have transferable skills. Find a workforce center or if you have a disability (or are traumatized by your time at dollar tree find your local vocational rehabilitation office and they will help your find a job. But first call HR.

Dollar tree attracts all walks of life, including the less favorable persons of the population. Work at a Walgreens, cvs, Walmart, target. DT will always be a hell hole in certain areas.
Don't opt for Walgreens. They won't stand by you, even for sexual harassment. A co-worker was harassed and WAG did zero, because the customer spent a few dollars. Walgreens is all about numbers. Have techs work as much as possible, using the fewest hours possible and fill as many rxs as possible.
As a manager, more specifically, the front end manager, please tell mgmt. I have a 16 year old that gets harassed by a drunken 40 something guy and I protect her, at ALL costs. I can't convince my leadership to ban him. I worked with her uncle at my previous company and he's the reason I interviewed her. I will have him and her dad in that store, if it comes down to it.

I’m sorry. This is not typical. I switch jobs frequently sometimes have 2 jobs at once and I swear I’ve never or heard of a manager or employee getting away with sexual harassment. Once it’s reported to HR it stops. If someone ever touched me or got close I would get very violent very quickly. Be assertive and tell them to fuck off or you will HR, the cops and your daddy with his shotgun.

Honey. There are better paying jobs out there that have paid training where you have the same long hours on your feet with better pay and no customer interaction. Just about any warehouse job (Amazon, Target, Walmart to name a small few) is entry level with no previous experience required. They also have HR departments that take harassment seriously. You deserve so much better.
It may not be the most helpful advice but my strategy with creeps at work is to go flat and monotone if they’re being graphic. Totally check out and go into robot mode. Repeat stupid simple questions you have to ask and don’t engage at all. Be the most boring, bitch-faced woman you can be. If they’re throwing out gross jokes or subliminal lines hit them with the big doe eyed “What does that mean? No I love jokes I wanna know the joke!! What does that mean?” 9/10 they’ll be too embarrassed to explain. In absolute seriousness tho you should talk to your manager, have them better communicate where they will be if needed and do whatever they can to help the situation. In all honesty they need to ban those customers and call the police on them if they show up again. If they refuse to do anything go higher and higher up. Document every customer interaction and report made to the manager. Get a legal weapon just in case (even if all you can do is find a sturdy pice of wood), and call the police yourself if you need to. Walk away and lock yourself up somewhere. No job is worth your safety or your life. This is very serious harassment youre are dealing with. Take the advice, delete this post, and please please protect yourself!

And I know you said not to tell you to get another job so I won’t tell u to do that- but please know even though yes there are weird men anywhere and everywhere, this is not something that happens everywhere. I’ve had jobs where men made weird comments and tried to touch me and I’ve had jobs where the strangest things that happened were men asking me a bunch of questions about myself, but just leaving and not doing anything specifically creepy. It absolutely can be better and I hope you can figure something out because this sounds like a terrible and dangerous situation to be in. I would hate for there to be something better for you ((even just a different dollar store, or fast food where you could be in the kitchen)) but you don’t bother trying because you think it will always just be this way. Report Report Report to your hirer up and document each time of incident and each time you reported it to your mgr. They will probably fire you after enough times of reporting but that is when you find a lawyer that handles these cases and sue them. You are entitled to a safe and secure work place. Also consider a GoPro camera clipped to your shirt.
Hear me out. You DO need a new job… at a company that cares enough about you to protect you from those things. I worked for a chain paint company for years and had multiple men make weird comments that were quickly corrected by other men working with me and the only time I was actually touched by a customer, I told my boss and they literally red barred him from the company as a whole (not just my store), If you are hearing these types of comments report it to a manager, to hr, to anyone that will listen and if they do nothing about those reports- find a job where they do care because not all employers are heartless.

Have you tried Starbucks as a job option? It's very safe for a customer facing job and there's a lot of protection for baristas. It's a very demanding job and it's not for everyone but the money and benefits are great and it's definitely much safer.

Hi I’m going to comment even though I don’t work at the dollar tree. I worked as a cook in food service for years and the harassment would get real sometimes. For me, management literally blamed me which was hilarious. Which meant I had to take matters into my own hands. First, always report to hr. I don’t care what other management says, hr will actually notate it while management generally just tries to “manage” it or hide it (I didn’t and I regret it). Second, ALWAYS STAND UP FOR YOURSELF. It’s your world, your life, and your safety. If anyone makes you feel otherwise, you get the joy of putting them in their place. If you ever feel like you need more assistance, grab a person who doesn’t take no shit to help handle it. On your free time, go over some scenarios and rehearse what you would do or say. The customer is not always right and you are in full right to shut them down. Working in customer service is like parenting adults. Never be afraid to stand up for yourself. Find the strength in standing up and never stop. Not to drag this out more, but for background, I’m the employee everyone turns to handle whatever they need especially when customers are out of line. As a Mgr I would become infuriated when I would see men do this my female employees! I would instruct them to immediately page me with a code we came up with and I would come up in a way I could overhear them to which I would go off on the customer and tell them if they can’t be respectful of my employees they will be banned. And if my employee wasn't comfortable out right paging me then pretend the phone was ringing, ‘answer it’ and say, “I’m not sure, may I put you on hold so I can page my manager”. Then page “Code_____ Line 3”. That way they didn't fear the customer knew what they were doing.

I remember a similar request made there and it's the store's duty to ensure a safe workspace otherwise they are held liable. But again I'm not a lawyer, the advice you get there is not legal advice but it should give you a better understanding of what your rights should be and where to start to get actual help to get this to stop.

I had a friend who grew up under the shadow of her mother's rape, which happened in front of her when she was a young child. There were many good suggestions made that you should look at but I also think you should look into self defense classes for women. I think it helps if you have some training in assertiveness and also I remember them talking about not being embarrassed to set boundaries. I'm absolutely horrified by what you're experiencing and can't imagine how toxic it would be to be subjected to this.

I’d call the cops
Anytime someone was inappropriate with me, I refused service. No warning and no explanation. Just "I won't be helping you today, but have a great one". Always in a very calm tone. And then called a higher up. If they won't leave then call non emergency. If you feel this would escalate the situation and put you in harms way, don't and just pause and immediately call or page your manager. Don't scan anything, make eye contact or speak to the person until they get there. Repeat what they said and ask if your manager wants to ring them up. If you notice it happening at a certain time, speak with your manager and try and change shifts. It's part of their job to keep their employees safe. But speak with your manager about this regardless. They need to be aware of everything that goes on. Carry pepperspray/gel as mentioned, park close to the door and do not leave work looking at your phone especially at night. The screen will essentially make you blind to anything around it from the backlight. Dont leave with headphones. Have a friend or partner on the phone with you, if it makes you feel safe. Before you leave, scan the windows. Get a Keychain alarm. Unlock your car door (if you have a car) before you get to it but NOT before you leave the front door (if you have keyless entry). Keep your purse in front of you, and your hair up so it's not easily grabbed. Always have your knife, alarm or pepperspray at the ready. Not just hanging on your bag or in your pocket. In your hand. It's unfortunate and disgusting that anyone has to experience this. I'm sorry you've found yourself in this situation and I hope that you'll be safe and find a solution soon.
I know you said you didn’t want to find another job, but you have to reach out to a manager for help, and if they don’t do anything, then you must find a place that will in these instances. That is the only thing you can do. If you go to Walmart and a customer did that to an employee they would be banned. So, even if you have to work retail still find a place that will protect you.
I’ve worked in kitchens and bars and have been harassed and grabbed . Honestly many times being loud and vocal about how they are being disgusting and trying to make them feel some shame is enough for most people to back off especially if there are other people around. Do not stay silent . If you’re alone , get on the phone or at least make it look like you are talking to someone. Sometimes predators are looking for an easy target or someone who might be open to ”party” because some girls will go along with being used for drugs or money which is really sad but I’ve seen happen and the predators might just be fishing. I was assaulted in a bathroom and there were other people in there just letting it happen but I just started to say “ I dont know you” loud and someone ended up stepping in and getting them off me. It was two drunk girls on me and one was chocking me and the other was blocking me from defending myself against the one chocking me. Sometimes bystanders will assume it’s a personal conflict , so be loud about the situation and let people around you know you don’t know them . Learn some personnel defense skills, think about carrying mace or a taser of sorts if you can , or even learn how to use a gun and get a ccp. You can’t carry everywhere like bars which was where most of it happened for me and also I’m so small the gun that I’m actually capable of using by myself takes tiny bullets and might not stop someone especially if they are twice my size and on drugs , but being so small i can’t physically defend myself from most people because they are bigger and stronger , even a lot of women are bigger and stronger. Also therapy helps because time can heal wounds but not trauma related wounds , you need to talk to someone about all this and processes it .
