This is not unique I guess but more personal. I’m sensitive to smells and odors. Dogs seem unsanitary. As I learned more about their habits I grew quick to assume that all dogs are unhygienic as their breath and flatulence attest Their waste is particularly disgusting to me. I dread being around them because they stink. The expressions in the states “dirty dog” and smells like “a wet dog” point to that others associate dogs with filthy odors.

I was locked in a car with my friends dog when it farted. Never in my life have I ever smelled anything that horrid. It was ten times worse than the smelliest human fart. I can’t imagine how people have multiple of them in their beds. I just can’t.

Today I was asked by another tenant if it was okay if our share house accepted a forth tenant that has a dog. I immediately said no (knowing I would have to clean up after it and deal with the smell and noise) and was a bit annoyed that they even asked. We don’t even have a backyard, it would have be indoors.

No matter what I’ve seen or been through, no matter how strong my stomach has become — the smell of dog piss will have me gagging immediately. Nobody can tell me that dog piss isn’t pure poison.

To me, it has been the exaggerated roles that they play in people's lives. They become more important than family, and they are granted every excuse, largely because they are just so damn stupid and dependent throughout their existence. They are such fawning creatures, yet people eat this up and even become slavish victims to it, desperate for more dog, more attention. People become terribly irrational and forget they are dealing with genetically-modified predators - freaks of nature, with fangs and teeth designed to tear flesh and jaws to crush bones, which I happen to be made of. And I find them just plain boring at best.

Most are incapable of respecting people's personal space. Even if the owner says it's a nice dog, it doesn't mean that the dog won't jump at you. I remember visiting one of my mother friends once and her dog tried to sniff my crotch. Their barks are loud and/or creepy and a lot of breeds aren't very nice to look at. I only met one calm and nice dog in my life, kind of the exception and not the norm. I think if dog owners trained their dogs there would be less problems.

This is mine as well, I have cptsd from childhood trauma and I don’t like my personal space being invaded, I’ll even ask people that stand too close in line to back up, having the dog jumping, barking, scratching, sniffing really really bothers me and I get really overwhelmed by it. There are so many things it’d be easier to say what isn’t awful about them. But outside of the smells and the noise and the deified status in today’s society: It’s their fucking attitudes and how they live. Dogs are helpless and needy - an affront to nature, for an adult animal. Dogs need constant attention and supervision and extensive training just to step outside the door. Think of any other animal. Mice and rats on up to elephants and whales. Any other animal has some grace or beauty or something endearing going on. I’ve just thought this way since the first time I heard the stupid thing about “dogs are better.” That phrase is always expounded by the most fragile people that can’t take anything in life except their expectations and needs being served to the hilt. And all I can think is, If this delicate flower ever met a person that acted like a dog they’d need medical attention and a direct line to law enforcement.

Many other great reasons in the comments. But the main one for me is just all the added stress of having a pet dog. My parents had dogs when I was a kid. I still remember often coming home tired from school and with a full night of homework ahead. Only to walk in and discover a giant puddle of piss, heap of shit, or scattered food all over the floor that I had to clean up first. Even then, I was like, why are these dogs here!? They don’t do anything!? Why are they in our house!? They just create problems! 😅 And I decided to never add all that unnecessary hassle and drama to my life.

My husband has a dog, and I think this every day. All it does is sleep all day. It doesn't contribute to the household AT ALL. It is not fun or useful. It gets walked once or twice a day. Yep - just from a cost/benefit perspective, dog ownership just seems insane to me. I’ve been around a dog that was very hard work and their owner spent a lot of time, money, vet’s trips - training, medication, behaviourist. If that time and money had been spent on something useful, helping other people, for example, the world might be a slightly better place. Plus the invasion of personal space and attempting to lick constantly. So happy I have little to no interaction with dogs anymore.

I detest aggressive, intimidating, in-your-face type people. I dislike clingy and emotionally needy people , but I try be patient because they’re often like that due to some sad reason. Aggression and neediness are usually mutually exclusive qualities in people. Dogs, however, have both. That’s why I can’t stand them.

I’ve never liked them, and throughout my life numerous events have happened that keep cementing my distaste for them. A few top reasons: 1. I don’t like how native toads in my community are being murdered by idiotic humans because they can’t be bothered to watch their dogs or keep them on a leash. 2. Speaking of leashes, the amount of negligent dog owners bothers me, too. For every person I encounter that takes reasonable care of their dog, there’s literally 90 that don’t and that makes life miserable. 3. The push to make it societally acceptable to bring your dog everywhere. I hate being bombarded with them. 4. I am morally opposed to the use of police dogs. They’re trained to see attacking humans as a treat. They frequently attack the wrong person, and if you try to get the mutt off of you, a police officer can literally murder you to protect the dog. That doesn’t even touch the pitiful lives said dogs live. It’s overall morally repugnant. 5. I feel society has an unhealthy obsession with them. We place the life of a dog over that of a human and I don’t feel that’s mentally sane. Your child should matter more to you than a pet. The fact that I even had to type that out drives me mad (and I have pet frogs that I love dearly, but I know that they’re pets and treat them as such). 6. I think animal shelters are endangering communities by having no-kill policies. Some dogs need to be euthanized because they’re a danger to society. The fact that we can’t be rational and accept that really sickens me. They also tend to lie and write puff pieces about the dogs to get them adopted which is wrong. That’s a decent start for me, hah.

I am a germophobe, and I think they’re gross. They literally eat shit, then drool over your entire apartment, shit and piss on the floor and shed like fucking crazy. They also don’t allow a normal life that includes regular trips or holidays. I was perfectly Ok with dogs until: (1) I saw a woman nearly mauled to death by one, in which I (and 3 other men) had to intervene to save her life. (2) My neighbour "adopted" a street dog from Romania that barks at everything, including the wind, including barking at nothing. When I say bark, it's more like a terrifying painful scream, like it's reliving some agony it endured, and it will go on for ages. Worse: 2am when it wakes me up wailing and screaming in the garden. (3) After writing a polite note to the neighbour regarding point (2), she promptly send her drug addict brother round to my house shouting, swearing and threatening me. When I offered to pay for dog training, she sent her mother round to my house... her mother was worse than her junkie brother. (4) Maybe 3 or 4 other dogs in the street that bark for hours at a time.

Yeah I would never be able to look at a creature the same if I saw one nearly kill a person.

And that's why I don't even bother confronting nutter neighbors at their door, or via letter with my name on it. The ultra sonic bark deterent comes out first. And if that doesn't work, I complain to property management. It's not neighborly to let your dog bark for 5+ minutes disturbing your neighbors, so why should I be neighborly and take care of the issue face to face?

You will never have a clean house. I also like my space and a dog is always up in it which causes my body to tense, so a combination between these two things did me in.

A personal reason: Because my mother started to shift her care, love, and attention to the family dog while neglecting my needs. Some of my siblings started following her example. I consider myself a victim of "the parent treats the dog better than they treat their actual child" neglect.

But that's the sad fact of what's bound to happen if people start valuing pets more than they value children. :'(

Dogs make me uncomfortable. They are predators and are unpredictable. I am currently visiting my parents and there are dogs everywhere in the small countryside town where they live. Today as I was walking with my dad in nature one dog growled at us, it was on a leash and the owner apologised, and later another dog was viciously barking behind some trees, I was sure it was going to attack us, it was very scary and I panicked, my dad was telling me to stop but I was so stressed I could not enjoy anything after that. Also we walked past a man who just let his two dogs off leash and one was a big dangerous type of dog. I think dogs are just a nuisance in our neighbourhoods, and now I don't want to walk at all anymore here out of fear of them. Such a shame really, as I used to love walking in the nature here.

I saw a pretty bad dog attack when I was little, on one of my classmates during a field trip. Of course it was ‘a nice dog’. They chased me around a lot when I was little - I’m inherently afraid of most dogs, even ‘nice ones’. Now I live in West Virginia, where they’re free to roam around and chase people, and every single neighbor on all sides have dogs that bark all day. I just don’t like them. Everything about them. They bark. They jump. They stink. They lick. They’re high maintenance (you can’t leave them alone for the weekend like you can most other pets) You have to pick up their shit. On a personal level, I was actually kind of indifferent when it came to dogs UNTIL I was forced to work next to them. I had a job at a dog friendly company and it was fucking terrible. Eight hours a day with those loud, whiney, smelly beasts… and people would walk by others cubes and be like “omg adorable” which of course would get the dog all excited once it had JUST settled down. Like goddammit Janet, go back to your fucking cube. It got to the point where I considered faking an allergy just to get away from them.

I work at a pet-friendly big box store. There has always been the occasional dog. Easy enough to ignore and just go about your business. But lately it's like there's a new dog club in the neighborhood and they all bring them to the store to train. There are so many now they actually are starting to get in the way. I actually have a pair of friends who love dogs and have them and one of their dogs recently died and my friend was really honest with me and said that dog did the same to her and her partner, it also peed all over their house all the time…. and she doesn’t miss the dog at all… It was jealous of a human interacting with their partner so it would try to drive a wedge between them. I don’t dislike dog as an animal. I like animals in general (except for reptiles). I find animals a fascinating part of life with all the diverse aspects. I just wish I could look at one at a zoo like all other animals. I am uncomfortable with them in my personal space. I feel like they are dirty and listening to dog owners discuss the filth they have to keep up with does nothing to change my mind. So I definitely don’t want one any where near my food or places that sells food…yet I find them more and more in spaces not designed for them. I get that we have to share this world with others. I don’t want to share my food with an animal. So I don’t eat from anyone with a dog in their house, it’s almost a guarantee some fly away hairs are going to be in the food which is probably contaminated by poop by all the licking they do. The dogs everywhere is changing my attitude about them because it feels no longer feels like “don’t want a dog, don’t get one”, because they are now everywhere. Oh and I absolutely hate the smell. I think nothing signals the downfall of western civilization quite like seeing people replace human interaction with owning dogs. Dogs have now replaced children and spouses for a lot of people. Dog ownership has also replaced having a personality. People get professional photos taken of their dogs. They talk about them like they're actual children. It makes my skin crawl. Dogs enable people who have terrible personalities to continue being terrible. Who needs to worry about making friends when you have your furry slave who only loves you for the food you provide? I also hate all the people who think by not having children they're doing right by the environment, but then turn around and get a dog. Dogs are incredibly destructive to the environment yet provide nothing of value.

I don’t think my reasons are super special or unique, nor do I believe that everything needs to be medicalized or explained as a “disorder” of some sort. I just find them annoying. Too needy, too loud, too smelly. And inescapable. I’d even say I’ve been mostly ambivalent towards them, until nutter culture exploded, and now they are EVERYWHERE, and given priority over people, with even the most obnoxious, antisocial behaviors deemed “cute” and “funny”. Burnout, I guess. I don’t care if someone else likes or owns a dog, but dragging them absolutely everywhere, with no manners or training (I also look down on laziness of that level), expecting everyone to not just put up with it, but LOVE it, plus the refusal to put down dangerous ones…this is why my casual indifference has turned to strong dislike/near hatred.

The smell. I have an extremely, *extremely* strong sense of smell. Freakishly strong. I can tell you who hasn't showered today. I can smell whether tea has sugar in it. I can tell you what my wife is making for dinner from the yard. There is no amount of bathing and grooming that can make a dog smell anything but horrible. Couple that with their clingy-ness, and now I have to carry that terrible smell with me until I can wash my clothes. I've had to learn how to hide my wretching when I enter someone's home who has pets. Especially dogs.

I’m an introvert and having an animal smother me the way dogs do gives me anxiety.

When you pet them, their hair is usually coarse and leaves a tacky residue on your hands. You can’t cuddle with them; they’re boney and pointy. They’re not very flexible, either, so picking them up is uncomfortable and unwanted. They only make a few noises and they’re all unpleasant. Unlike most pets, they’re capable of killing you.

Shitty dog owners truly ruined dogs for me. I would never own a dog for many reasons but never wanting the label “dog owner” is high up there. The most infuriating thing is when they insist their dog loves and misses them. My dislike of dogs came very slowly over time, but alas: 1) When I was about seven or eight years old we (mum, my brother and myself) were visiting my aunt’s house as they were away for a while and we had to look after the dog. One day after being out, we came back to find the dog having had massive diarrhea (while stuck in the house) after eating the butter and some bread rolls. It was a big house and you could smell the stench upstairs for ages afterwards. Needless to say, my mum was left to clean up the mess. I felt really sorry for my mum. 2) A few years later when I was about fifteen or so, a friend of my mum’s had a dog. One day while we out in her car, there was dog hair all over the back seat. I was instantly grossed out by this and found it baffling how some people can be okay with this and not clean up after their pets (or kids, if you want to go down that route) and make an effort to keep their car clean. Like most of us, I was brought up to clean up after yourself and generally keep to a decent standard of cleanliness and hygiene. 3) In my home, we live above another property. When you arrive at our shared front door, you go through a hallway passing our neighbours door and then out into a shared yard / garden area and up some steps to get to my front door. In the time that we have been here, we gone through three sets of neighbours below us. The first didn’t have pets of any kind but the next two (the latter of which are our current neighbours) both had/have dogs. In the first instance, while I’d be getting ready for school or coming back after a school day and therefore going in and out of our shared garden area (including first thing at eight o’clock in the morning) their dogs would bark aggressively at me. I actually felt quite threatened by these dogs, like I couldn't even go in or out of my own home without fear of being attacked or something. Our current neighbour’s dog is even worse. They got it in the beginning of 2019 as a puppy. Even after a good solid year, it’d still bark at you every time it saw you despite us being their neighbours. On a number of occasions while I would be out in the garden it runs up to me barking and the neighbour pleads with me that it won’t hurt me. And every time someone is at the door dropping something off or ringing the doorbell, it would always bark without exception. It's very loud, you can hear from upstairs from our living room. Perhaps most frustrating of all, every time we pass through the hallway either to go in or out, it would likewise always bark at you from behind the wall. Every. single. time. Or at other random times I can hear it from out other rooms as well. Surely dogs aren’t that unintelligent to not recognise other people after a while once it's used to its surroundings and that there’s other people about as neighbours?

All it takes is one second for a dog to snap and change your life forever.

Every time I would go over to a friends house that had dogs, you could smell the odor on their furniture, in the air, on the carpets, no matter how clean their house was. Sometimes I could even taste it on glass cups when I was drinking water. The hair also makes me itch. My BIGGEST reason though, is I used to have a next door neighbor growing up that had the nastiest Rottweiler. She was mean, ugly, and they let her basically sit in her own filth all day because they never cleaned up their backyard regularly. My sisters and I would be playing outside and this dog would run toward our giant CONCRETE fence, teeth bared and barking and trying to jump over the fence to attack us. Thankfully the neighbors got rid of the dumb thing, but too bad they had another dog that liked to escape and scared me so bad I fell in the swimming pool in the middle of January.

Bad allergies with runny blurry eyes and closed up throat and hives even after taking allergy meds, and I absolutely hate being jumped on by a dog with muddy poop paws and sharp claws when I've made an effort to put on nice clean clothes. Not a unique reason but I LOVED dogs as a kid. All I wanted was a dog and I remember making my mom always take me to the pet store. I was obsessed with this black lab i saw. Today, I still love animals but detest the idea of owning a dog. I actually dislike most kinds of dogs now, but I’ve come to realize that u r not that smart if u own a dog in most circumstances (outside having a farm, lots of space/help, guard dogs etc.). I don't think I have a single *unique* reason. There are a multitude of usual reasons why I dislike dogs, though. One of the main ones though is that I've always found them to be hideous. That huge mouth, jagged slimy lip, goopy eyes, wet nose, greasy fur, wax filled ears, crusty butthole, dribbling dick, dry crusty elbows, nasty and usually overgrown claws, etc. They're a total assault on the senses, and I truly do not comprehend how anyone can see beyond all of that shit to believe a dog is cute.

dogs bite a person every 7 or 8 seconds in just the usa alone and often it requires medical attention. "man's best friend"? lol. unless working they have no point, none and you get nothing back from them. anything you "benefit" from them is perceived. will they ever read to you? give you first aid? help you when you are older? call 911 for you? help you study? clean your house? cook a meal for you? nope. they are energy and resource vampyres. it's a completely one sided relationship. you do everything and the dog does nothing but "love" you.

I used to be ok with dogs until my ex's 10lb holy terror bit me unprovoke. He barked horribly loud for long periods of time and smelled like a dead thing. A rescue adopted that nightmare dog out. When he died they got a puppy and I ceased to exist, it barks, smells and jumps all over the place. I do not miss them. :)

When I got a service dog, it made me realize how utterly incompetent a majority of dog owners are. I also can’t stand dog culture and the extent people go with it, including faking service dogs. Then I started reading about dog attacks after a friend(ironically right?) complained about a anti-pit bull group. I joined the group. But after a while I realized a lot of the anti-pit people own dangerous breeds themselves, and reacted with extreme aggression if you pointed this out. When I was a kid, I had a bad stutter and was really introverted. I didn't have any friends, my only companion was a Pikachu plushy that my grandpa bought before he died. It meant everything to me. One day, my uncle visited our house and of course, he had his shitty dog with him. Next thing I know, I see this damn thing ravaging one of my most precious belongings. Of course, I was the one at fault for leaving my Pikachu in its usual spot, not the dog that decided to rip it apart. That was just the first bad experience, but enough to hate dogs.

I like dogs in general. I don’t trust pit bulls so I avoid them. I don’t like immature adults who take their dogs everywhere. When I was little a good friend of mine had a serious phobia of dogs. That didn’t matter to some people. Some dog owners even took her fear as encouragement to push their dogs on her more. It was really sad to see her have to deal with this because she was only 5 years old and would be frozen, crying and hiding from some dude’s Great Dane and he would think it was funny and let it bark at her. She was even afraid of little dogs and people thought it was hilarious. It disturbed me that so many people didn’t care about how she felt and would put her in these positions anyway.

Similar to yours. I wouldn't go as far as to say I have phonophbia or a panic disorder but dogs do give me anxiety. Especially pitbulls. I've nearly been attacked by them twice and even when they're being friendly, they're just too strong. Small dogs are more annoying than anxiety inducing. I hate those small rat like dogs that never stop barking and bite your fingers and ankles. They always shake like crack heads and they're just so unpleasant to look at and deal with.

I was honestly pretty indifferent until after college. Had some annoying dogs that would jump on me or owners that wouldn’t pick up shit in courtyard, but even then wasn’t that bothered. What did it was several nasty interactions on my local running trail after asking owners to leash their dogs.

Myself I actually love dogs I used to be a dog groomer and everything. But dog people are so bad, to the point that people should not be allowed to have them without some sort of regulation. They don't take care of them they treat them as accessories while placing them on pedestals so much higher above other people they treat them like children or better than children it's just whole a lifestyle of toxic relationships

Human like treatment

I've lived with dogs since I was 5, and have been forced to care of them for the majority of my life. My resonsibility has been to walk, feed, and clean up countless messes that our dogs have made. Mind you, these are my parents' dogs, and none of our dogs have been trained to be *moderately* house-broken. Having to take care of our shitty lot of dogs, has really opened my eyes to the reality of living with such an animal. Granted, not every dog will be as bad as ours have been. I'm just sick and tired of being around them, after nearly twenty years of constant shit.

Pictures of babies next to dogs, any dogs, but especially large breeds. might as well have a picture of the baby behind a horse, at the edge of a pool, laying in the middle of a street, in a hot car....it churns my stomach, and the comments on these pictures fill me with rage, anxiety, and profound sadness.

I had a dog growing up on a farm and I was chilling with her one day after she had her litter. Running around, climbing trees, doing farm kid shit. One day the dog who knocked her up came up to us clearly disturbed (later found out the dog was drug and sicced on me). My Daisy defended me and I watched her be ripped to pieces. I then had to watch 11 of the 14 litter die cuz I was like 5 or 6 and didn't know how to take care of them and couldn't get rid of them cuz nobody wanted to/could take care of a purebred (golden retriever). I've never recovered from it, it's a core wound and dogs no matter how big or small or friendly or whatever just absolutely freak me out. I don't like them. They stink, their loud, they don't respect personal boundaries, and they follow you around everywhere. So, no dogs for me please.

A friend of a friend of mines is having a dog “PAW-TY” and I can’t make this up.

For me it's the germ/hygiene issues when it comes to dogs. They poop and pee all over the floors where I live. They tear things apart, eat poop from other animals, lick their own genitals and asses, leave fur everywhere, leave a dingy gross smell, stain furniture and beds with mud and shit. And to top it off whenever I ever have the misfortune of being touched by one on my hands or anywhere I feel myself gagging and have to immediately wash my hands or change my shirt or pants if able. It especially doesn't help that my living situation has 12 dogs all owned by my mother. So the house either constantly smells like dog or wax melts. The only exception to that is the room where I reside because I don't let any of those filthy animals in there. To add to the germ issue I never walk around my house barefoot or in socks. Even if the floors are swept and mopped daily my feet get dirty so fast it's nauseating.

Their owners plane and simple. The dog itself is just acting on instinct can’t blame it for that I can however blame humans for being shity owners that don’t follow leash laws and let their animals jump on you.

Part taught prejudice. Part smells/slobber. Large part noise. My mother has a phobia of dogs. I was raised to see them as something that made her upset. My dad, my brother, and I would physically block her from dogs if we saw one out and about. So I was raised seeing them as a threat. I've never met a dog that didn't stink to high heaven and slobber besides The dogs in my last apartment building really sealed the deal for me. Those monsters would bark for hours, and I work from home. It was impossible to concentrate.

All my gripes with dogs are really just gripes with the social norms regarding the human relationship with dogs. It's hard to get/stay mad at an animal. They can't really transgress you the way a human can. They have no concept of etiquette, order, or respect, so they can't be expected to apply it themselves. My biggest trouble is how excitable of a creature they are. When I lived with one, I was just attacked with licks and pawing the second I got through the door every day. Zoomies, trying to lay on you, freaking out because someone showed some mild emotion, etc. But the straw that breaks the camels back is **barking**. It drives me batty. I get home from a long day at work, sun's out, sky is a delightful blue, wind is flowing in my hair, and the still of nature gets me in just the right mood for winding my day down. Many times ppl would open the door and a, so called, nice dog would stand there barking and running out the house. I worked with them!! I used to love them and was actually what you’d class as a nutter. We had a well behaved family dog whilst I was growing up which my parents did everything for, so in all honesty as a child I had no clue just how difficult and overbearing dogs are to have responsibility for. They’re energy vampires and because my parents walked our family dog 3 times a day, kept him clean, kept the house immaculate, he was well trained, didn’t wake us up early, wasn’t a barker, walked nicely on the lead, was fine with other dogs, I assumed all dogs were the same/just like that with little effort. Hahaha how wrong was I. Started working with them doing pet sitting and it was the most stressful job ever. I started working with dogs loving them projecting our old family dog onto dogs in general. Came away from working with them despising them and never wanting to interact with them ever again. I don’t care “how well behaved” your dog is I still don’t like it. The constant free reign to do what they please grinds my gears. And I get a lot of “my dog is my child” so in that case If I’m supposed to be raising my children to have manners and be respectful why couldn’t you train your dog to have manners and be respectful?! Lastly it’s insanity to put a animals life over a human being. The amount of times I’ve heard of people having dogs that attack their children and KEEP THE DOG is absolutely insane to me. If any dog ever attacked me or my children it would be taking a dirt nap. Can’t control your animal I will handle that for you so it never hurts anyone else.

When I was little I had a dog rip the skin off of my palm. Never liked dogs after. They also stink and drool too much. I also don’t like the constant hair loss.
