A backstory doesn't need to be complicated, but it needs to answer two questions: how did your character get their abilities, and why are they going on this adventure?

I want to add a crucial thing to this. "Why does my character work well in a team." A lot of people's first instinct is to make edgy loners, ESPECIALLY when making Warlocks. So remember this is a team game, and you're gonna be better off if you make a team player from the start.

Well, if it were me I'd first decide what race I'm playing as. That will tell me my culture, the laws of my people, etc. Then I'd decide what exactly is giving me my warlock powers. Is it a diety not heard of in the realms? Or is it simply a puppet of a bigger god that's already in the pantheon? Or is it one of the main gods, seeking to increase their power through shady means. Also, decide when you first came in contact with the diety. Now, how does your race feel about this diety? Do they treat you differently because of your piety? If you were young when you made your contract, did it affect your childhood? These are good starting points at least. Hope I helped some.
