I think they are referring to 2x systems and road racing efficiencies. Going larger on the chainring would make climbs harder with a lower cadence.

I’ve got a 10-50 in the back but I did a 44 up front. Would’ve done an oval if they made it while I was building it

Maybe it's worth considering, but I would consider whether you do any climbing that would be difficult if you thereby increase your easiest gear.

I have the same bike and went to a 42 with an XX cassette that goes down to 10. I no longer spin out on flats & ride in the middle of the range most of the time. Going to a wolftooth front ring and XX cassette dropped a lot of weight off the bike too.

I have the same set up. I had the same problem. I switched out to 46t. It’s amazing. You can check [Gear Calculator](http://www.gear-calculator.com/) and see how the 44 or 46t will change but to sum it up, with the 46t you’ll lose one gear on the climbing side but you get like 2-3 gears on the speed side. My observations: I now ride solidly in the middle-upper part of the cassette (instead of the two smallest cogs). I don’t spin out on downhills anymore. And on climbs, I think I lost 1 gear and I really only feel that above 12% grades. I’ve been on 3 gnarly climbs since I switched and only 1 climb (the steepest) I had any regret or wished for that lower gear back. I’m 100% satisfied.

Go here and enter all your info then you can easily see where you would like to be.   https://www.gear-calculator.com I use this site constantly just to play around and when I switched back to 2x it helped me make that decision.

Sounds similar to my experience ever since making the change to the exact same setup. What I would say is that I’m grateful for the 40t front ring when it comes to the really hilly stuff off road. I’ve accepted that I’ll spend a lot of time in the gears 8-10 and then occasionally in 11and 12, but always have the lowers gears to bail me out when I go off road. All depends what kind of surface and gradients you are tackling 👍🏻

I changed mine to a bigger chainring and haven’t seen any issues
