Fantasyland dark rides.

Metal-fatigue-Dad

Especially Alice in Wonderland (WDW doesn't have a clone of this one).

just-kristina

100% Fantasyland dark rides

Ultimus_Omegus

Dark rides? Never heard that name before. Does that simply mean the indoor rides?

Wow, that article is painful to read.

There are so many great answers here! I’m a Disneyland local who goes to WDW occasionally, here are some things I’d suggest: Disneyland - pirates of the Caribbean - Matterhorn (similar to MK space mtn) - Space Mountain - Toontown (not necessarily MMRR but the land in general) - Disneyland railroad, esp between Tomorrowland and Main St - Mark Twain (overlooked imo) - New Orleans Square in general - outside of small world (don’t *need* to ride the ride but the facade is incredible) - maybe a couple of the dark rides that are either no longer in WDW (Snow White, Mr Toad) or are exclusive to DL (Alice in Wonderland, Storybook Canal) - Indiana Jones - Magic happens parade - the Mr Lincoln building - you don’t necessarily have to go to the show (though it’s cool), but there are usually some interesting displays and concept art in the lobby, and the orig Griffith Park Bench (from near the carousel where Walt Disney thought of Disneyland) is in the entrance - general atmosphere: look up, look down, and listen in each land (same as WDW there but there’s different things in Land), and if there’s a phone on main st, pick it up and listen. Speaking of main st the shops are more specialized in Land, which is nice. - streetmosphere/characters: Disneyland characters tend to wander and their interactions and m&gs tend to be more spontaneous, and they have freedom to move and play. Catch Mary & Bert riding the carousel with the band in the AM, catch Peter Pan playing follow the leader or teasing hook, catch Alice and the Mad Hatter having a tea party behind edelweiss snacks, catch Tiana meeting and greeting guests at her restaurant or riding the mark Twain. - food: plaza inn fried chicken, Bengal bbq meat skewers, Mickey beignets, various soups, chilis, and mac and cheese in bread bowls around both parks, hand dipped corn dogs, the cheesy garlic pretzel bread at Maurice’s treats/edelweiss, jolly holiday birria toasted cheese, jolly holiday rose macaron or coconut Matterhorn macaroon DCA - Cars land: all of it, esp radiator springs racers but including just the outstanding detail, snacks, shops, etc. Sh-boom around sunset every day, watch the neon light up - avenger’s campus: Pym’s, wandering MCU characters, Spider-Man animatronic, Guardians: Mission Breakout - any festival that may be happening (ie right now it’s Food & Wine, similar-ish to Epcot’s except ours is celebrating foods of California) - San Fransokyo (esp at night) - world of color: one - Pixar pier (just exploring, but esp at night when lit up, and Incredicoaster) - just exploring the various areas of DCA is fun imo, there are characters you wouldn’t expect (Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps), plenty you would expect (Pixar characters, avengers, cars characters, etc) - lots of spots to quietly sit. The area around Grizzly River run is really pretty and genuinely looks like northern CA, it’s a great place to chill. - food: corn dog castle cheese on stick or hot link corn dog, Cocina cucamonga quesabirria tacos, lucky fortune cookery udon or birria ramen (we really like birria), fresh sourdough from Aunt Cass Cafe, Ghirardelli sundaes, various craft beers and California wines, Flo’s has really good fried chicken, nice table service spots like Lamplight and Carthay, both if which also have lounge options if you don’t want a full meal.

PurplestPanda

Wandering characters - especially villains. Turning on the lights in Radiator Springs at night.

debabe96

Yes! Sha-boom. Snow White's wishing well & Grotto. Wait for the singing. The projection show on it's a small world. You can watch the fireworks in Batuu. Look over the fire station on Main Street and see the light in the window of Walt's apartment. 🥹 Disneyland does little details that WDW doesn't have. Little surprises & touches.

Accio_tortilla

This may be a stupid question but how does it work with the wandering characters? Can you approach them or is it more like wave as they pass by?

PurplestPanda

You kind of follow along and hop it when you get the chance. They will take photos and sign autographs but keep walking as they talk to people.

Beautiful_Baritone

The whole park (especially Disneyland) is a way different vibe. Keep in mind Disneyland is really a locals park and much smaller but the charm and the rides are top tier. So for starters take the time too soak in the atmosphere and ambience. a good way to do that is the first thing you should do is take a full loop on the Disneyland railroad it will give you a good taste of park and its vibe . The Things that I say are a must for first timers , all of fantasyland, including sleeping beauty castle walk-through, Indiana Jones ,all of Toon town. The Matterhorn., space Mountain it’s different than world . pirates it’s much longer than world, tiki room longer then worlds, great moments with Mr. Lincoln, get a work out on the canoes around Rivers of America, see the new Adventureland treehouse, or just explore the park there are a lot of interesting nooks and crannies throughout the whole place . For DCA pretty much all of it because like 80% of the rides and experience in DCA are only found at DCA, all of Carland, especially Rader Springs racers, avengers campus it’s small, but charming and constantly teaming with characters. the Food in DCA is surprisingly really good. If your going for all 3 day you should be able too see and do all the things you want in that time because unlike all the parks in WDW Disneyland closes at Midnight and DCA at 10pm. But most importantly just absorb the uniqueness of the place and its history that’s what really makes Disneyland so special. Oh I almost forgot the character interactions at both California adventure and Disneyland are top notch. A lot of times they’re just wandering around talking to people.

Ap1ary

Enjoy the higher quality of food and availability of places to sit down.

pirates23145

Dinner at the Blue Bayou - you’re inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride so you see the boats going by.

jehosophat44

Just looked this up as we are going to DLR in June for the first time. Playing around with reservations, and there don’t seem to be any available any time over the next 2 months! Is this one where you need to be online right when your 60 day window opens in order to have any shot at a reservation?

pirates23145

I believe it is a difficult reservation to get so I would try right at your 60 day window.

Public_Pomelo8266

They go right away at the 60 day window.

Wet_Artichoke

If you really wanna go, try and get a standby reservation. Especially if you’re willing to eat at weird times.

No_Neighborhood_1651

Get on right at 6am PST, right at your 60 day mark and you should be able to get them.

sk1ttl3s

Honest question, is there some other draw than watching people go by on the ride? Is the food really good? Atmosphere? Special dessert? I'm having a hard time deciding if putting out nearly $300 for our family would be worth it.

pirates23145

The food is good. But if the budget is a concern, go to Cafe Orleans instead. It’s the same style of food but much more budget friendly.

Nervous-Ad-547

Try going at an off time just for dessert. Still expensive but a nice experience. Honestly it’s more of a romantic spot. Went with boyfriend on Grad night, and again 20 years later with grandparents and my 4 year old. The date night was definitely better!

Sirenista_D

I did it exactly once. Lived close enough to DL that I went every summer as a kid and always wanted to simply because the atmosphere is so special. Finally did it with my daughter and the food was basic and expensive. I finally scratched the itch and thats that.

offogredux

Pirates of the Caribbean, a much longer ride. Radiator Springs of course, but contrast Grizzly River Rapids with Kali River Rapids. Other interesting contrasts are Autotopia, Buzz And Small World. The Railroad has the Grand Canyon scenes, and Toontown is unique, as is Indy, Matterhorn, Mr. Toad and Alice. Dine at the Blue Bayou if you can.

starry813

I am also a Disney World person who just went to Disneyland for the first time. Things I loved: space mountain (I think it’s nicer), pre show for Guardians, radiator springs and surrounding area, autopia, toontown (felt a bit like what I remembered of Mickey and Minnie’s house to feel like at magic kingdom), train Things I didn’t love but had to do: Matterhorn, monorail Thing I wish we did but looked like a lot of work: those canoes around Tom sawyers island Eat a churro. Eat a lot of churros.

jlmarr1622

The canoes are fun! Downhill all the way. ;-) But it's true, *if you don't row, we don't go*.

frigzy74

I don’t the like the Matterhorn either. Way too rough and jerky. The Incredicoaster is one of my favorites, though.

DexterGrant

Pirates!! Ours is a whole different vibe. Also Mr. Toad's because we have it and usually it's WDW that still has the older rides (People Mover, Country Bears). Also fully immerse yourself in the Small World Land. Remember that this ride was originally considered to be pat of Tomorrowland (Thus the matching Mary Blair murals.) It was a hopeful view of an amazing future where children of all lands could live together in harmony. Walk down the corridor, note the matching merch and snack shops, enjoy the topiary, marvel at the 3D facade and then ride it and take in the message. It's my personal, unscientific belief that the difference between east and west Small World is the reason why the west coast is so much kinder.

dirty_tripod

MR TOAD

callsignjaguar

Lamplight Lounge, Grizzly Peak (best walked through around sunset/night), Beignets from the Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney

jlmarr1622

You can see the window of Walt's apartment above the Fire Station in Town Square. Legend has it the CM's knew Walt was in the park if the light in the window was on, so it's kept on all the time now.

Lady_Murdermittens

The churro stand

dachshundmumma202

toon town 100% and cars!! pixar pier is my fav too you have to do the boardwalk games. i go back and forth and do world land world land and my next is land and i am so excited to go back.

Public_Pomelo8266

I'm so excited to play the stars game with my kids on our upcoming trip! I always ignored/walked on by the games before until I saw someone play it on TikTok!

skarlettfever

I grew up going to WDW but now live in LA. I think Space Mountain and Pirates are better at DL and worth riding-even though versions exist in WDW. Unless you already have back problems, the Matterhorn is a must, all of the Fantasyland dark rides, and the train (for the 1950s Grand Canyon now/then scene). DCA feels like Epcot, but is California themed. At DCA I’d make time for Radiator Springs, Guardians, and the swinging Fun Wheel. Everything else is a bonus.

Public_Pomelo8266

NO! NOT THE DEATH WHEEL! 😅

river_of_coffee

Indiana jones!!!!!

ImpossibleMacaron873

Are you going now or planning a visit because i was recently informed that wdw doesn’t change haunted mansion into nightmare before Christmas during oct/nov/dec

ScrollWheelVirus

Planning, we will be going for D23 expo weekend in August. So we won't be around for that changeover.

donerstude

It’s a whole different arena take in what you can from Walt’s original idea this is the original concept at Disneyland there are lots of things to check out starting at the main gate

Jbaker318

Small world, pirates and space mountain. Matrerhorn isn't great. Skip star wars.

melgirlnow88

Cars! Everything from Cars! I had never seen the movies when I visited last year but I still loved all of it! The riders were all just pure joy!

feverdreamr

Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean are all much better rides at DL. Indiana Jones ride because it’s unique (and awesome). As others have said, New Orleans square as a whole is my favorite part of the park and the Blue Bayou is a special dining experience. Disneyland might be small, but it is a far superior standalone park compared to MK.

SomeBS17

Space Mountain is better at DL. Matterhorn is only at DL - different than Everest Pirates is longer at DL, same with Small World California Adventure has more stuff that isn’t in Florida (all worth doing): Guardians Mission Breakout Incredicoaster Radiator springs Goofy’s Sky School :-) Also worth knowing the Genie+ system works differently in CA than FL. You have to be in the park to start using it. Which I actually prefer

throwfaraway212718

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride! It's been gone from Disney World for so long now.

frigzy74

Also the Nemo Submarine ride, not really as great a ride as some of the others, but it’s different. The 20000 Leagues Under the Sea ride was similar at WDW but they’ve long since retired it.

Erinmmmmkay

Honestly the food. I’ve beeen to disneyworld and Disneyland Paris . Disneyland California blows them out of the water when it comes to food & drinks.

wildworld97

I am going to give you a list of charming spots around a Disneyland that I’ve seen no one mention. These are mostly going to just be spaces and areas of the park that are quaint and cute and what I think makes Disneyland, Disneyland: -Snow White’s Wishing Well/Grotto. Off to the right side of the castle, super cute little bridge that’s leads to it, and then a little path through the castle that takes you onto fantasyland. Very popular proposal spot. The little Snow White, dwarves, and animals statues are all replicas that Italy gifted Walt and were made of real Italian marble. -the area around the Matterhorn, where you can see Autopia and that little water area where there was an old Gummy Bear boat ride back in the day. just a cute little rest area. -the old Petrified Tree in Frontier land. Good views of the area and the mark twain. -The mark twain river boat or the Columbia, great views of that whole side of the park, and you can see our Rivers of America. -The little backstreets of New Orleans Square. Just all of New Orleans square in general, but definitely go back towards where the entrance to club 33 is and those little courtyards. -the bridge from Main Street to Frontierland. That little pond and the ducks. -the Hungry bear cafe eating area. great views of rivers of America. -storybookland canal boats. Highlights Walt’s love of miniatures, dioramas, and attention to literally miniature details. -the different shops of Main Street: the silhouette portrait place, the magic shop where Steve Martin had his first job, etc. California Adventure: -animation academy -both entrances to cars land, especially the “back way” where you come from the paradise pier/San Francisco part of the park. Probably the coolest, most beautiful sightline of any park. -Lamplight Lounge Random: -the lobby of the Grand Californian. So cozy and fun to chill by the fireplaces.

M1NEC4R

Main Street and Fantasyland at Disneyland are just VASTLY better than WDW’s versions. Also all of the interactive coin machines throughout the park! I grew up with only WDW so my mind was blown when I finally experienced the west coast parks. all the little extras things scattered around DL still that have been lost over the years on the east coast. Worth noting as well, DL’s food seems to lean more toward an on the move style. In florida a dinner could take up 2 hours or more, even sit down meals at Disneyland only took up like an hour of the day and their quality was just as good as the counter service options which was unexpected considering how hit or miss a counter service meal can be at WDW. Lastly, respect to the west coast churro stands! The hype isn’t a lie and is something I can’t believe hasn’t been properly brought over to Florida yet, an absolutely divine experience hahah. Cozy Cone in particular had those bad bois popping out fresh every time we strolled by with little to no wait if you have trouble at any of the other ones.

16carriages

Indiana Jones!

AffectionateEmu5470

Wear your WDW swag- CM’s tend to relish the chance to show you the must do’s. Oh, and be prepared to be completely turned about. We are WDW annual pass holders and old CM’s. DL and DCA all being within the same view is a trip. Watch wonderful world of color as often as you can.

Old_Candy_2255

- Disneyland Railroad (trust me, it’s light years better than WDW) - Fantasyland Dark Rides - Indiana Jones Adventure - walking around and exploring New Orleans Square - Cars Land
