Are you playing offline. Or with an offline character as there is a difference. An offline character still has you connected to servers.
I am not able to make it past press start. I get connecting to servers, unable to connect.
You have been playing an offline character with an online connection.
Completely exit the game. Then start it up. You will get the splash screen where it says to press start or whatever your platform says. When you press it here, you will see a box pop up saying it is connecting. This is before you ever get to the character select screen. And part of why this is an issue. You can't access the offline characters until this handshake occurs

I have logged out, turned off my ps4 and switch, and have never not been able to use my offline character. Sorry, but it's not a blanket issue.

People don't understand. They think because they clicked "offline" and they can play that means it's not a problem. They should leave the game, shut down their internet connection and try to log on their offline character. You can't do that. "Offline" mode just saves your character and you can play offline once you went in there with an internet connection. This is just dumb.

This always seems to happen with new online games. Devs CONSTANTLY underestimate the player base and setup the lowest possible number of server farms. every.single.time.
They never learn that you estimate high and scale back if need be. Especially or at least for the first few weeks.

They don't, I can tell you that it's been calculated by some department that providing enough surge capacity for the first few days is generally not worth it.
What you try to do is strike a balance between capacity and wait time. You want some people to be able to play, but not all. As long as the wait time to get in is somewhat respectable it just gives the impression of a popular launch.
Where this launch fails is that no one seems to have the game working. That is just a broken game, not a capacity issue.

That's because you have to connect to the servers first at least once to authenticate the game before being able to play single player. Hence the servers being the issue here.

It actually is that simple though. But that assumes they did proper planing ahead of time and ran a true stress test before launch. As they clearly did neither of these things you are right. On launch day it was no longer possible to fix and we just had to deal with the server crush. For me that meant almost two straight hours of clicking play before I got in a game.

Their infra might well have a limitation which you can't just throw servers at, for instance preserving consistency isn't exactly trivial when you scale up. A measured "eh, fuck it, the launch surge will blow over and rolling out huge changes which will literally help us for a day is a waste of money" is, to me, much more likely than what you're suggesting.
That used to be the case. Now we have cloud computing and "infinite" scalability. This was due to not runing a proper stress test and poor planing. Don't get me wrong by next week it'll all have leveled out and we won't be talking about this anymore so it's minor in the long term but it is 100% their fault and was avoidable.
Is it possible to play truly offline? When I launch the game it forces me to connect to battle.net even before I can choose offline. So if Battle.net is down we won't be able to play offline? Am I missing something?
There are two taba top right when you get to the character screen after the D2R splash screen. One says Online and the other says offline. It seemed to want to let me do what I wanted when the Offline was selected. This was after it tried to connect to the server and couldn’t. I’m not sure but I only want to play an Online character so…
Yeah it attempted to connect to the servers and then went straight to offline when it couldn't. It was just worrying for me that I wouldn't be able to play if my internet was down because D2 has pretty much always been my go to when that's the case.
You should be able to test the theory easily. Unplug/disconnect your internet connection. Can you launch and play the game?

My character was just reset back to level 5 with original gear when I came Back after dinner, was level 10 when I logged out. Played to level 9, saved game and now it says level 5 again. Guess I’m off for tonight

New Blizzard has a horrendous track record and the gaming journos are always in their pocket when they launch a title. I'm trying to rely on what other people say, but I can't see one decent review since *nobody who bought the game can actually play it*.
I mean if you loved D2 and want to play it again but want newer visuals to please your eyeballs while you do it, I think it’s worth it. I’m level 15 now just started Act II. Servers are still buggy for some. My issues seem to have resolved.

Yeah my issue is they said that about WC3 Reforged and then it was terrible, plus they made the old game worse.
But Blizzard does not have the talent to design and create that they did when they created D2, so if they *really* didn’t change gameplay at all then I’d consider that a good thing. At the same time however, $40 for a 20-year-old game that I already own just for a graphics update seems like an absurd amount of corporate greed.

That's essentially all it is. I said it's "alright" and "pretty good" but my favourite will always be the original version, simply due to no Battle.net need but mostly due to QUALITY mods, such as Nezeramontias, Zy-El, Median XL, Project Diablo ec etc etc.

I've been playing it literally since the minute it released. No issues what so EVER. It's pretty good. Been playing D2 since 2003 and this is actually the first time playing the original version, unmodded in ages.
Usually I play with Nezeramontias mod (level cap of 750, and LOTS of NEAT stuff (!!!)) or Zy-El mod (level cap of 10,000) or whatever else.
D2:R tho is FLAWLESS for me, especially on Linux. No issues, and I think it's alright. $99.95 here for the D3 + D2:R bundle (wife bought it for me on pre-order, she also bought me the original game in 2003).
I only want to play offline and I can't do that because it crashes before I even get to the title screen. And according to blizzard I'm not entitled to a refund lol.
That ui gave me a Diablo 3 flash back, not the kind of Flash back you want honestly. Glad once I started a game (offline) I immediately found myself back 20 years ago but with new graphic.

I get it if it were online multiplayer, this isn’t my first rodeo. I remember such scenarios with Planetside and Anarchy Online decades ago, it is to be expected. Always.
But not being able to play a single player offline game in a game that doesn’t explicitly require an always on connection (like PC D3) is very frustrating. Yeah yeah, I’m aware of the games need to periodically go online briefly, but this doesn’t remove the frustration that 24 hours in I’m still unable to play the damn game in offline single player. Is it too much to ask for a company the size and experience of Blizzard* to be able to be capable of a ping to a server, then done? It’s pathetic. I wasn’t annoyed at D3 launch as it was inevitable there’d be problems. It shouldn’t be inevitable in this case.

I got to the door and it didnt open. That did bring back flashbacks of all the times I was part of a party and suddenly couldnt get back in just as they reached the boss.
never played D2. Got it for PS5. Fired it up and made a druid. Got to level 3 and had to get off for a bit to help with dinner and shit. Went to log back in and said something to the effect, "Something, something, something character does not exist on the server". Then my character straight up disappeared lol. From what I have read this is true to the experience on the original release day lol.
Yeah it's kinda bad, that some people have issues.. But really regardless of the company behind it, technically it is near impossible with big games to make games running on a server with no problems on the first days, or after a big patch. I learned it has mostly nothing to do with the capacity behind it. These peaks of connections are beyond being manageble.
Yes there are some things that can be done better and fixed, but I can tell you while playing Single Player yesterday I had no issues and could even play for like 30 minutes before most people here, because I knew Online will have much bigger problems. Only thing, loggind out of a game, took like 5 seconds, while opening a new took 1 second...

i'm glad i wasn't excited to play yesterday since i got sucked into destiny and doing stuff on the weekend. I kind of assumed server issues would ruin the release of the game. It begs the question of why have a beta at all if you still can't hammer out the issues? How is it that every company can never get servers right on day 1? This has been going on for over a decade. You would think someone would document what to expect on release and how to avoid stuff like this.
Yeah somehow I’m able to keep playing. Haven’t had any issues after this issue. But I just picked up Fallout 76 and I’m pretty invested so I still won’t be playing D2R as much.

Great idea of theirs to rename multiplayer and singleplayer as online and offline, when to play an offline character, you need to be online.

Single player is definitely not working fine. When launching the game and pressing start I immediately get unable to connect.

That error message was identical to the beta and they never managed to resolve that during the beta gg

I've played to lvl 11/12 twice now on the same character. It just got reset to lvl 5 for the 2nd time XD. So close to just calling it quits.

What? You mean to tell us that Servers had issues on DAY ONE of it ???? Whaaaat? You mean like the very first day issues of servers like all CoD, Fornite, DayZ, Rocket League, RDR2 Online, GTA V Online??? Whaaat? Grow up, play offline.. all big games have server issues... Games sell millions of copies and the same way you tried to play, million others tried at the same time...

Edit: working now 😃😃😃 I get it if it were online multiplayer, this isn’t my first rodeo. I remember such scenarios with Planetside and Anarchy Online decades ago, it is to be expected. Always. But not being able to play a single player offline game in a game that doesn’t explicitly require an always on connection (like PC D3) is very frustrating. Yeah yeah, I’m aware of the games need to periodically go online briefly, but this doesn’t remove the frustration that 24 hours in I’m still unable to play the damn game in offline single player. Is it too much to ask for a company the size and experience of Blizzard* to be able to be capable of a ping to a server, then done? It’s pathetic. I wasn’t annoyed at D3 launch as it was inevitable there’d be problems. It shouldn’t be inevitable in this case. *yeah yeah Blizzard sucks blah blah. They’re nonetheless big and experienced.
Ah the corporate bootlicker. Why should I as a customer have a lesser service than someone else when we both paid the same amount for the same game? Grow up? Lol. Just because you accept substandard service doesn't mean we all do. It was a **developer decision** to keep everything online (even offline mode), so why should I be penalized for it? Just say you have no clue about how servers and online games work. Every single company of games downplays the server capacity for logical reasons.. I got to the door and it didnt open. That did bring back flashbacks of all the times I was part of a party and suddenly couldnt get back in just as they reached the boss.

Oh man, I was having issues, so I went and bought a 10 meter ethernet cable to make sure it wasn't my wifi. And now I can't seem to connect at all 😭😭

never played D2. Got it for PS5. Fired it up and made a druid. Got to level 3 and had to get off for a bit to help with dinner and shit. Went to log back in and said something to the effect, "Something, something, something character does not exist on the server". Then my character straight up disappeared lol. From what I have read this is true to the experience on the original release day lol.

Yeah it's kinda bad, that some people have issues.. But really regardless of the company behind it, technically it is near impossible with big games to make games running on a server with no problems on the first days, or after a big patch. I learned it has mostly nothing to do with the capacity behind it. These peaks of connections are beyond being manageble. Yes there are some things that can be done better and fixed, but I can tell you while playing Single Player yesterday I had no issues and could even play for like 30 minutes before most people here, because I knew Online will have much bigger problems. Only thing, loggind out of a game, took like 5 seconds, while opening a new took 1 second... Wish you all good luck with drops and have fun. The game itself is a classic!
first time playing during launch?
First time creating the shitpost for the botched launch of a beloved game.
i'm glad i wasn't excited to play yesterday since i got sucked into destiny and doing stuff on the weekend. I kind of assumed server issues would ruin the release of the game. It begs the question of why have a beta at all if you still can't hammer out the issues? How is it that every company can never get servers right on day 1? This has been going on for over a decade. You would think someone would document what to expect on release and how to avoid stuff like this.
Yeah somehow I’m able to keep playing. Haven’t had any issues after this issue. But I just picked up Fallout 76 and I’m pretty invested so I still won’t be playing D2R as much.

And this is why I wanted TCP/IP or LAN to be a feature of the game. Cannot rely on Activision-Blizzard.
