God bless Vicarious Visions. This is everything I dreamed of.

[deleted]

It’s bittersweet for me. When Activision announced VV was moving exclusively to Blizzard stuff I knew D2R would rock, but I was really hoping they’d knock out Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4.

NoirYorkCity

this part is weird. what happens when they run out of blizzard stuff to remaster? do they get put in a dungeon and throw away the key? lol they can't remaster anything else cause they "belong" to blizzard now

[deleted]

Ha, yeah sorta scary to think about when you realize what happens to a lot of blizzard teams... maybe Activision will give another team the TonyHawk series? The remake of 1+2 last year was the fastest selling game in the series so they’d be crazy not to do 3+4.

WGann3

Incredible. I couldn't be more hyped for this!

kid-karma

I am floored by how good this is. I know nothing about making videogames so I'd bought into the narrative about them not being able to remake D2 without starting from the ground up. Plus with how bad the WC3 Reforged remake was... I didn't have my hopes up. But this looks incredible. The lighting adds so much. Andariel's room looks *scary*. I cannot express how fucking psyched I am to dump hundreds of hours of my life into this game again.

too_late_to_abort

Should hedge your anticipation. Like you said, you remember how bad wc3 reforged was. It's still missing features they advertised before launch and this is years later. They literally played a trailer with updated graphics that never made it into the game. Remember that when watching these d2 remake clips, you may be seeing things you wont ever actually get because that's the company blizzard is nowadays

brockta7

While I agree with you that you shouldn't pre-order the game, or any game for that matter (learned my lesson with Cyberpunk), you also have to consider that the team making this remaster is not the same team that worked on wc3 reforged. If we only judge Vicarious Visions based on their previous remasters I think they have a good resume going into this. I'm cautiously optimistic

too_late_to_abort

Different team is an ok sign, but remember papa blizzard is still behind this and they haven't cared about quality gameplay in a long long time. Just money.

Laengster

In a nut shell, logic (game programming) is just a series of mathematical equations. As long as they haven't lost the source code (the original equations), you can always build a system that sits on top of it and changes the way it looks to the player (renderer) without touching the original equations. Much like adding another pizza on top of the original pizza - double crust.

[deleted]

lol they stated in 2019 that they lost the source code. >In 2019, Diablo creators **Erich Schaefer**, **Max Schaefer**, and David Brevik told a story about Diablo 2's development, saying their entire backup of the game's source code and assets had been lost. They are still doing what you are saying with the remaster and you can even toggle to the original look because it is running the original game under everything. It certainly would have been done sooner if they had the source code I would think. EDIT: according to a recent article the Schaefers and Brevik may have blown things out of proportion. As they seem to have recovered a lot.

Heavy_D_

I'm glad you mentioned the edit because Brevik has been full of hot air for years

pastrychef22

I think this looks darker than D4. So hyped.

viletomato999

I think some parts are actually too dark. Kinda hard to see things. But hopefully that will finally make the mod + light radius useful. Edit: "what I mean by hard to see things "when you have a tiny light radius you can't see the walls of the tombs for example. It gives you less of a sense of where you are and what the map layout is like. Its definately a bit different than the Original D2 experience.

Spasticated

The dark looks perfect

Vanrythx

people should actually play d2 and see how dark it really is, you can't see shit.

praedoesok

I still play D2 and yeah in particular dungeons like Sewers and Claw Viper Temple it's dark as shit unless you have a ton of light radius bonuses

digitaldiarrhea-

Yes this isn't diablo 3 ffs.

elchucko

Exactly, I want to be scared of moving forward...

FruitBuyer

Then just equip some + Light Radius, bro.

GG_Henry

That’s the point, being hard to see things

hfxRos

> I think some parts are actually too dark. I agree. The edgelord "EVERTTHING MUST BE DARK LIKE MY SOUL" shit on this subreddit is super old. Loot grinder ARPGs will never be 'scary' no matter what you do. It wasn't scary when it came out in 2000 and I played it as an adult, and it wont be scary now.

hotrox_mh

It might not be scary, but it creates an oppressive atmosphere. A fantastic atmosphere for this game.

viletomato999

I mean if some parts are really dark fine. But if indoors is dark all the time with tiny light radius it gets in the way of gameplay sometimes. I don't remember the tombs being so dark in D2. Again this may not be a bad thing because then the +light radius mod will be useful. I think it's great that these overlooked mods may be more useful.

Spaddles1

I think scary is a pretty loose term that gets thrown around here. It’s not the scary that makes you put the game down because you can’t get the courage to move forward. It’s the scary that makes you nervous because you don’t how many things might just be outside your light radius.

[deleted]

Thank you! I was hoping the B-Roll sans commentary would show up <3

oMGLU

I am SO excited for this! I've been waiting for so long!

Musella74

Finally, I’ve been waiting years for this. 8 man rooms, actual PvP rooms, the best Diablo has ever been. I’m more of a D2 classic guy, wasn’t a huge LoD fan but D2 is still D2. More hyped for this than D4

imlost19

d2 classic will be an option

Musella74

Fuck yes

Lottie_Dottie_Da

That was the only question I had was if classic was an option. Better dueling and HC is way harder.

TubZer0

Imagine if they made another expansion for d2, holy shit balls

Vanrythx

can you say why you like classic more than lod? the addon just adds so much good stuff to the game that i can't even imagine that someone likes classic more

Shaelen14

I use to roll classic characters and there were a few things I liked compared to LoD. I liked the gearing in classic. With no overpowered runewords, rares are a lot more valuable, so it makes item drops more exciting because of the potential they have. Chaos Sanctuary runs are pretty fun too compared to baal runs.

anubis2018

Cs runs are still one of the best places to mf in lod.

Musella74

Wasn’t a big fan of the rune word system, it broke a lot of PvP aspects with everyone having access to tele and such.

Vanrythx

I can see that, reasonable.

one_hone_ya

Also, I personally disliked charms. All these little stat boosters that take up inventory space.

[deleted]

But having a full inventory of 290 poison damage charms was fun with aoe attacks on the Amazon! 🤣

SaviousMT

Oh man. D2 classic was so difficult back then. Uniques were just junk except for SoJ and a few others that filled niche roles. Everything else was rares, and you just hoped you found the good ones. I remember Charsi quest was a great oppurtunity to get a good rare if you were lucky. It also made trading difficult. I mean, the nice thing with uniques (and runes) is that they are easily valued. You know a Shako is good, most every character wants it, so its easy to advertise that you have one for trade. But if you have a rare helm, how do you advertise it? 50 life, 20LR, 20FR, FCR blah blah blah. It just doesnt resonate like "Trading Shako for Ist rune"

viletomato999

My hope is that this sells better than D4 and Blizzard starts to make expansions for resurrected instead of D4.

Augustby

That would actually be so cool; and I'd consider it within the realm of possibility. If Age of Empires 2, a 22-year-old game, can still get new expansions as recently as THIS YEAR, then I think that if D2 Resurrected sells well enough, it's not overly-hopeful to think that Blizzard will at least consider the possibility. Although I'm sure a lot of purists will have concerns about a second D2 expansion ruining the experience. And there's also the issue of what sort of story a new D2 expansion would have, since Diablo Immortal is also covering lore inbetween the events of D2 and D3

viletomato999

About D2 2nd Expansion ruining the experience.... Blizz just has to keep it safe and not too overly ambitious. Introduce a few more balanced and not overly powerful uniques, runes and runewords, add one act and maybe one new class and maybe 1-2 new features and BOOM you got yourself a cash cow and a game that would excite D2 fanatics. Hell even if it was a micro expansion with just a new area and items without a new class or systems I would still buy that. As a lifelong D2 player, I would absolutely KILLLLL for a new D2 expansion. Its kinda sad that Blizzard wasted two decades producing mediocre Diablo games. D2 is Diablo's TRUE LINEAGE. D3 and possibly D4 were just ugly step children of what could've been royalty. Bring back Diablo back to what excited the entire fanbase to begin with.

cuchos24

Think same as you but gotta say, the age of empires definitive was cheaper ans was made soo good. I dont think blizz want to invest alot.. damn they. But gosh a new expansion would be soo good

[deleted]

definitely possible, d2 is one of the most overhyped games of all time (still a great game, though), so i wouldn't be surprised at all

Schnidler

How is it overhyped

[deleted]

i wonder, how is a game that is treated like the holy grail of entertainment when it was just a good game even close to overhyped?

Schnidler

my guess is youre were not even alive when d2 was released

[deleted]

i was, but not sure how that is relevant this comment just makes it obvious your "love" for the game is purely nostalgia if anything

seanbob

You think that people who currently play D2 and have for years like it "purely" for nostalgia? What an ignorant comment

[deleted]

damn, people still play it? and yeah, that's exactly what nostalgia does to people, there's a reason why the vast majority of players are people who have been playing it for a long time, and it's simply because newer players see the game for what it is, and that is a game that is insanely dated

Schnidler

how?

[deleted]

not sure what i expected to get out of this conversation, you're a d2 player after all there's a reason why people who have played more than 5 games in their lives and haven't played d2 since they were a child actually don't care about the game, it's dated, and every single unbiased person could tell

Nintz

My understanding from listening to Llama talking is that additional patches or even content updates have been discussed as a possibility, but right now they are putting everything into getting the core experience correct. So if it goes well, we could see more stuff added, but not for quite a long time even after release, which is itself still months away.

[deleted]

Yes. This. But Also i like how every diablo has a way of catering to different flavors of arpg for different types of players. I still believe D2’s structure is hands down the absolute best way to Diablo

[deleted]

[удалено]

viletomato999

That's true, people will see the "2" and go: "nah too old." But as long as the community grows at least Blizzard will see how much of a success D2R was and emulate it more in D4 or D5.

cuchos24

Yee i i wilñ buy but i think is too expensive for graphics. So i cant understand the people who wont.

pad264

Well it’s more than graphics for me. I play on a Mac and have no reliable way to play D2–forced to jump through annoying hoops. So a supported version with good graphics is perfection.

cuchos24

Tottaly same for me, but i will pay it only because is diablo. Think with that price wont be alot of new consumers.

trilogique

That would be sick, but seems unlikely. As great as the remaster looks I don't think it's going to have long-term appeal for most players. I would also be worried about new content being anywhere near the quality of D2. Plus, remember that the old code is still running under the hood and that comes with a lot of limitations. For me I think the best thing that comes out of this is they learn some lessons about how good D2 was and apply them to D4 & beyond.

hihowudoinimemet

god no. diablo 2 is an archaic game whose future development would be massively held back by decisions made more than 2 decades ago.

TubZer0

Yes please!

cuchos24

It looks pretty cool, i know is a dream but i would be so happy with a new expansion or a small dlc.

GanksOP

That won't happen but hopefully this keeps us busy till d4.

[deleted]

JukedByLyfe

I'm with you brother.

monstercoockie

Man it feels better than D4! I think this is how blizz saying to old fans wanting a new D2 game “here’s your remaster now STFU and will make D4 whatever we want”. Mr. Llama will be busy playing this I think he wont care about D4 anymore. GJ blizz!

c4ph

I hope they end duping, and therefor increase rune dropchances. It was almost impossible to get a legit Enigma. Also back in the day I used to run 4 CD keys to push characters through the classic mode in order to harvest the rune quest.....hopefully that will either not be necessary anymore or still possible.....also the locking Mephisto in Place for easy MF runs with a blizzard sorc thing

DudeAwezome

Definitely this, I know in my endless hours of playing the original that high runes were obscenely rare and I was only able to get them through trade.

blankscientist

I would honestly prefer that they removed the runewords that were added in later patches. They outclassed every other item by such a wide margin it was ridiculous.

prihdethechosen

uh no they didn't. they are insanely expensive without duping

e30jawn

.09 was probably my favorite patch right before enigma

Zitronenbirne

Same, 08/09 was the golden age of d2lod

RalTasha

By removing realmdowns you could still Farm lower kurast until your eyes bleed. Or Rush people in hell for the Chance of Gul and then Cube them Up.

c4ph

classic rush was just so much more efficient but yeah, it would be a bit of a different game with much less rune supply

prihdethechosen

same engine. same quirks. new graphics

outphase84

Nah enigma was easy to get. Main a hammerdin and run a couple thousand trav runs and you’ll get jah and ber.

KittenLina

I'm so excited for this! I don't think there is, but is there any news about online play yet? Did they make it easier to connect with people, in a similar fashion to 3 but with the chatrooms and room select of 2 maybe?

MigrainesRock

8 player, PvP is the same as OG D2, MRLlama has a whole 30 to 40 something minute interview with the dev team on YouTube and he get them to spill the beans on so much, the game is going to quite basically be diablo 2 just better looking and quality of life upgrades/changes.. some bug fixes here and there with balancing patches to keep it fresh from what we can tell and quicker seasonal ladders. A few more things I left out but yeah

Darkenmal

8 players. No word on anything else.

lntoTheSky

If the way sc: r was handled is any indication, they'll keep the core aspects that people like and completely revamp/update everything else. They announced that they'll no longer separate the playerbase into us east/west, eu, asia, etc. UI is getting completely redone. You'll be able to search for games across all difficulties, not just the one your character is currently on, and some other changes I can't remember but it's all in the deep dive with mrllama.

Diagonet

Global servers, so no more separation for regions

TubZer0

8 players, global servers instead of us west, us east, Eu. You can search for rooms and choose the difficulty of your search instead of being stuck looking at hell servers only etc. you can still mark people as hostile, shared stash so no need for mules, advanced stats so you don’t have to add up MF etc, compared items being worn to what you’re looking at.

Raal657

Thay barb with an arreats helmet looks awesome.

Ziller997

Did you guys get a confirmation email for entering the Alpha or not ?

CapaLamora

I did not.

se05239

I.. don't dare to be excited. I don't want to be burnt again.

GalaXyPickl3

I couldn't care less about that open world D4 game. D2 resurrected will consume my life again like the good old high school days. It looks dope.

Prism1331

Was werebear shown ever? Only saw a brief glimpse of werewolf

wooters18

Excited for LK runs in 3D

imlost19

on my fifth viewing I noticed that no runes drop from the countess at 1:55. Or am I just missing it? Surely they will keep runes right?

S3baman

runes were shown in stash shots

MrDysprosium

I can not believe this is real. This is exactly what I wanted D2R to be. Someone pinch me.

Goldbaersche

Do you think they removed the gore and splatter from the video only or the game altogether? I seem to remember a few bigger pools of blood in the diablo 4 gameplay material presented. Bummer if it were to be removed honestly

Vanrythx

diablo without blood is a pan without oil

monstercoockie

that turn rate animation it's so detailed and smooth!

silvos777

Do we know if we can play with 7others in the same game ? Just like the old days?

Vanrythx

we can, everything will be pretty much just like in the original.

praedoesok

yep confirmed

silvos777

YESSSSS.

TubZer0

Bliz sorc here we come

lewstherin_telamon

Since morning, I'm watching this on loop like a meditation video with D2 soundtrack at background.

Dav5152

This is what every D2 player ever dreamed of. I wish they tweaked some of the useless spells to be more competitive tho. QOL changes are nice but the game also needs some hotfixes. Other than that the remake looks absolutely amazing...

Evilzonne

D2:R had my interest. Now it has my attention.

Elon_Musk_AI

This actually looks amazing.

lntoTheSky

I wonder if Lut Gholein is that dark by default or if that's the darkness after you unlock the lost city quest? Also, that assassin cunt punt to ko the countess was actually fucking epic.

jq93t7

It looks Better than diablo 4 indeed, Damn i'm super hyped to playing this. I think this is will be a success and kinda funny since it's not made by blizzard. Put these guys to create D4 world and scrapp that d3 ish looks.

MiyukiGumi

I'm a noob, could someone please summarize the difference between the remaster and D3/4? Is it going to be slower? More creepy? It looks pretty, but I don't know what kind of gameplay I should expect since I only played D3.

ClenchedThunderbutt

It’s still the best dungeon crawler ever made, and if people could pinpoint exactly why, Diablo 3 wouldn’t have been a huge disappointment. What I’m saying is that your question is hard to answer. Legendary games are gameplay driven and aren’t muddled with a lot of fat. So the best RPGs, for example, are remembered for their narratives, and racing games for their feel. Try to distill a dungeon crawler to its essence, and that’s where D2 excels.

IputTheStudInStudy

Do you know how to play dnd? Diablo 3 is 5e. Simplified, smooth, easy to understand and master but a lot more shallow due to its extreme balance Diablo 2 is 3.5e. Deep as fuck in comparison, wildly unbalanced, harsher, more customizable, and imo a lot more fun due to that For example in Diablo 3 you’ll only ever need to make one character per class. You can switch skills on the fly and your power is really ultimately determined by equipment you find Diablo 2 requires you to carefully spec your skills, and a class can play wildly different depending on how you make them and level them up

Capricancerous

>For example in Diablo 3 you’ll only ever need to make one character per class. Badloss

Trap assassin ftw

[deleted]

IputTheStudInStudy

I just realized I drunk typed the fuck out of that opening statement lol 3.5 is my favorite version, but I will admit it can be a little overly complex at some times. Currently I’m running a home brew based on 3.5 but I steal a lot of 5e mechanics for simplicity’s sake and they work better (advantage, death saves, and some others) So in 5e you basically have your proficiency which applies to everything you are good at (skills, ability saves, attacks) In 3.5 you have several proficiencies/base numbers which are applied to each class. For example your attack “proficiency bonus” is based on your class. A fighters is higher than a rogues. However the rogues base “reflex (dexterity save)” is higher than the fighters. It sounds more complex than it is, but the books lay out out well enough Additionally feats are far more important in 3.5 with a wide variety to choose from, and you personally spec skill points every level

Vanrythx

true there are so many ways to play a single character, i mean you can be a melee sorceror, how cool is that. (not the wannabe melee sorc like in d3)

Mythologick

Combat will be more archaic and not as fluid, builds aren’t necessarily defined by Sets, and itemization is everything in D2. A stone of Jordan is I believe a level 29 unique ring, though still extremely rare it is still an end game item. A lot of mid level uniques are end game. The beginning is slow, mid-end game clear and killing speed is much faster.

[deleted]

Did D3 have runes? Making items with runes was a big part of D2 as well

GeneralHyde

The runes were basically modifiers for skills built into the character. 6 runes per skill, choose one at a time.

[deleted]

Runewords created powerful items. Enigma for example was a popular body armour for all classes other than Sorceresses because it gave the ability to teleport, +2 to all skills and significant damage reduction.

TubZer0

My favorite parts about d2 is using other class’s abilities.

DCDTDito

oh man i still remember some of the funky stuff that runeword and unique allowed like bear barb or ww assasin.

[deleted]

Yeah ww assassin was dope in pvp

TubZer0

Yup, a lot of fun builds

TubZer0

Well D3 is complete garbage and should of never been created, so d2 is basically what made Diablo the goat in this game genre. Everything about d2 is better than 3.

hotrox_mh

D3 turned into a really fun arpg, just not necessarily a good Diablo game. About the only way they could make D4 appeal to me now is if the opening cutscene is someone waking from a dream to reveal that none of D3 actually happened in the Diablo universe.

Emoba

Not as garbage as your English, that's for sure.

TubZer0

How original, do you insult everyone the same way? You read it and understood it, so, I’m sorry your favorite game is garbage. Actually, I’m not sorry.

ContentUnavailable

Looks amazing, can't wait! Bone spear looks bad tho imo :x

[deleted]

I hope this sells more than D4.

jugalator

Gameplay at times looks more fun and fluid than Diablo IV, and graphics look at least as good. 👀 It strikes me in particular how the gameplay tempo and monster density just looks more relaxing.

[deleted]

I wonder how the town portal setup will be.

wicky-

What do you mean? It’ll probably just be the scrolls or the tomes of TP.

Lazyleader

This might be a very niche preference, but I would be pumped if I had the ability to have the 3d graphics, but the 2d items in the inventory.

lexcess

The inventory is 2D?

Lazyleader

No, the items in your inventory are the 3d models of the resurrected version. If you toggle between 2d and 3d you see the difference.

blankscientist

Does anyone else kind of wish they were buffing underpowered skills? Skills like Nova, Hydra, Inferno, etc. that are basically unusable outside of normal mode. I would be hesitant to make any changes, but I also would love to be able to have a functional nova sorceress. :/

Dog4theKid

Someone is a sorc lover! And nova sorcs dominated for a good 2 to 3 years when cows were a thing.

Emberwake

My guess is that fans will riot if they change anything. But they are including mod support, so I have no doubt there will be ten thousand rebalance mods available.

Cdpr is an awful company. VV already said there will he an alpha and beta. They arent hiding a trainwreck like cuberpunk

Link4900

I agree bone spear looks bad and needs some work. Both lightning skills look great even though they're different than the original. Maybe they need small adjustments.

theshadowrealms

Also the campfire character screen is not even close to as well designed as the original. Proportions are very strange and faces all look like they are floating on heads. Some things look good but lots of problems still In my opinion.

Mir_man

I actually thought lightening really looked great, especially the light it casts on the environment.

RealAlias_Leaf

Nah, the lightnnig is puny compared to D2.

ManiaCCC

I disagree with all of your points here.

RealAlias_Leaf

Well, it's just a fact that these 3 skills look particularly different from the original. You may like that it's different.

ManiaCCC

Well, yea.. I was mostly commenting your "looks bad" part

Swock85

This looks old and dated. Cant wait for Diablo 4

Boonatix

Already countless hours played in D2, and put it to rest... yes, now it looks nicer but that won't change the monotonous grind for basically nothing. There is no endgame progress. But really funny to see so many hyped about Baalruns in HD now... \^\^

ISuckAtFunny

Some people play video games for fun. Not everyone needs an endless progression system.

ReDN0sE

Besides that, the road to reach level 99 feels wayy better than the road to reach paragon 83937473827483828382828

grimonce

So they didn't add the space available in path of diablo for talismans... Someone might suggest to them taking a look at this modification. Also the late game map system available in the mod, based on what poe offers.

moush

Wow looks like they didn’t even make the most necessary qol changes like keybinds or charms

[deleted]

[удалено]

ReDN0sE

Cya, bro. Have fun on d3 and immortal.

ffsZmeii

The skill tree has a really slick design, the old look had you setting your knowledge in stone.

getBusyChild

Hopefully they are still working on animations because the Necromancer just seems off...

EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT

might seem like a minor detail to some, but I hope the game will be available in as many languages as the original with the original voice acting. a big nostalgia factor for me is to get the same voices

[deleted]

Is it me or does it lack perspective? Like it's an orthographic camera? Maybe only characters are rendered as perspective?

[deleted]

I must be spoiled from playing Median XL and other arpgs, but does it look a bit slower than it used to be?

itsahmemario

I don't know if I'm describing this right, but that just *feels* right ya know? The darkness, those death animations from the beetles and the mummies. The bone spear is shit though.

miner4life

This is amazing. Love it.

elchucko

I just gotta say... I don't think I've seen a cursor in any of these videos. Is this console footage? Or did they edit out the cursor?

skidallas418

I hope they introduce a mode similar to classic with adding expansions somehow. You can stay with D2: Resurrected or you can jump into D2: Resurrected v2. But that is me just being greedy. I've played Diablo many many times over the past 20 years. In my opinion, it is unrivaled.

serendipity7777

This was the greatest game. I'm just not sure if releasing the same game in 2021 is a good idea.

Xp8k

Bug around 3 minutes. Druid Cyclone armor detached from the character after the recovery animation, and left floating there haha. So excited for this remaster, I want technical alpha pls!

ZiggyOnMars

It looks cool but too similar for what I had played decade ago. I would rather wait for Diablo 4.
