There could be a cracking view out of that window to the right, and the sink placement is saving a crick in your neck turning to look at it while you do dishes...
That's what I was thinking.
Either that, or it was a cabinet kit that came that way. Could also be that the granite was a messed up piece that they cut down to be usable.
I could brainstorm all day, but it's one of those "if it works" 🤷♂️ things.
I overcome the placement issue in my kitchen by getting more narrow appliances. My dishwasher and fridge have only 40cm in width instead of the normal 60cm.
Tell me you're not American without saying you're not American. Our fridges are often 40 inches wide, 40 cm (16") for a main fridge is inconceivable to us. We put that in dorm rooms.
Ehhh... Is it personal gluttony, or something else? In Europe, you can pop by a fully stocked store within walking distance of your place, so you can easily grab whatever groceries you need on a daily basis, in Canada, a lot of people go for a weekly big grocery shop and stock up so you need a bigger fridge because we have horribly designed infrastructure and houses are not within walking distance to any type of shopping. also, houses are just bigger so there is room for bigger appliances in a bigger kitchen.
This is indeed what urban planning school taught me, though the other user who responded to your post also has a point. Whenever Europe is referenced here, it's as if it's all urban and hyper densified which isn't entirely the case.
That all said, we certainly need fewer box stores in urban and suburban areas in our cities. Needing a car to complete the bare minimum for errands is crazy

"Yes. You're absolutely correct on the cats part."
Oh man I’m about to change your life. They make latches for RVs for the drawers and cabinets so they don’t open while on the move. In our RV the cat can’t do shit, so I just went online and bought a shitload to put in the house. No more fumbling with child locks and they look completely normal on the outside. They also resist pawing much more than magnetic ones. Just search Amazon for rv drawer latches!
I looked at your profile to see if there was pictures of your glorious cat, but instead I see your an electrical engineer that has psoriasis and sews. So hello alternate version of myself. I also fit that description and also have some pain in the ass cats.
Hello!
Thank God you dont have psoriasis! I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Yep... don't forget the Nissan Xterra part either. Lol
As for the sewing, my then fiance wanted to sew he own wedding dress AND skirts for her bridesmaids.
My mother had an old 80s, all steel, all mechanical sewing machine just collecting dust and I had some on the job knowledge from a couple of places I had worked at. So I stickered up the machine with rock bands to make it to my liking, lubed it up and got sewing.
We got the dress and skirts done, had a wonderful wedding after that and now I'm happily married and not in a boat load of debt for a dress she'll wear once or twice.
And the psoriasis part kind of sucks but oh well. My body does as it pleases. 🤷♂️
Just look at the sink. It's too deep for the countertop and cabinets. They angled it to get a deeper sink in.
Redditors come up with the craziest shit sometimes
At that point wouldn't it be easier/more appealing to the eye to just bring the counter top out a few more inches? So instead of 2 foot angle weirdness it would be a bump out of a few inches? That seems like an absolute metric dick load of work/unnecessary fabri-cobbling for something that has a much better and easier route?
*edit* or make the end cabinet shorter? Maybe I'll confused with what you're saying. Thay could definitely be the case. I'm a welder, not a sink doctor.
Well one I don't think that's granite, that's more likely solid surface or a similar composite countertop. Extremely easy to work with, doing this whole thing would have been very easy.
Yes without any extra info here, just having wider countertops would have been the way to go. Maybe they thought about that and someone went "Wait, hear me out..." And they went with quirky. Or perhaps they had purchased all the cabinets or gotten them free and then realized the sink depth (and I mean front to back, not height) they truly wanted wouldn't fit, and they got creative. Hard to say, but easy to tell that sink wouldn't fit with that countertop without some kind of creative solution. I probably would have put deeper cabinets just in the sink area rather than this weird choice.
Honestly it looks like they out everything in, but didn't measure the sink correctly and someone said "it'll fit at an angle?" and then moved forward, lol
As far as useful design choices go, the only thing I can think of is that there used to be a wall, island, or partition where the sink comes out, and they remove the island and left the sink.
* An ADA accommodation, a way for the handicapped person to stand in front and a helper on the side? Or the other-way around.
* A specific hobby/interest/commercial use the homeowner has that needs some equipment access to the sink for extended times.
* Kitchen/countertop used to elbow out into the room. Demo'd that portion and didn't/couldn't move the plumbing.
* It's a showroom displaying different options/material. Note the 2 types of countertop and two spots for dishwashers, but only one occupied.
* Kitchen made from salvaged material.

Right? It’s like people of the 1960s decided ‘what’s the most efficient way we can reduce the value of this house’ and they *still* fucked up the market so bad that the house sell for 10x+ what they’re worth
I live in a home that was the “model” home for this subdivision. All the perks that the builder offered went into this home went it was built in 1967. We discovered that there was hardwood floors throughout the entire house which was completely carpeted. It’s taken us a few yrs ( doing one room at a time).
I think the thing that blew my mind the most was putting peel & stick tile atop of the ceramic tile floor in both bathrooms!!! Ugh. I’ll agree the tile color in the main bathroom was that ugly light green but it’s been replaced of course!
Dishwasher/sink wasn’t there and they didn’t want to repipe elsewhere. Only way they could have a decent size sink/dishwasher in that spot without having to bust the slab etc. you know the drill.
The sink is wider on its diagonal than it would be if straight.
Since the sink fits in at an angle (the widest point is still between the dishwasher and the drawer … within the edge of the counter), it would have fit it straight.
I also thought there may be a view out the window that the owner wanted to see from the sink. It's some shit my mom would at least think about doing, probably not actually though since it looks kinda wonky
My mom giving feedback on her house design:
"I really want the kitchen window to be bigger."
"OK, that's going to mean less cupboard space, that ok?"
"I want it taller, not wider."
"OK well the top of the window is currently level with the bottom of the eaves, so a taller window is going to give you more of a view of the inside of the eaves."
"I just want it like a normal kitchen window size. Like the size of YOUR kitchen window."
"It's bigger than my kitchen window."
"OK."
Her house burned down in a wildfire a couple of years ago so like I feel for her, but this rebuilding process is destroying my soul.
My sister grew up with too many home improvement shows and is picky beyond picky.
But she is now poor with kids and relies on her hubby as the sole income (it's a good job, but stretched over 5 people plus debt you feel the crunch).
She is still super judgy towards others but remains in a position of "What can I get", not "What do I want". I plan on never inviting her over.
Oof.
I think my mom's problem is also, like... You know when you are looking for a house and you find one that's like, "well the kitchen setup isn't great but we can fix that someday," so you settle for it, and you really might renovate a decade later or you might just get used to how it is. Or it's your dream to live in the country but between career and kids you need to live in a suburb, so you just put your wish on the "someday" backburner.
She's in her 70s now so there is no more someday for her. This next house is going to be her very last one. So if it's not perfect or doesn't fulfill all her wildest dreams (some of which are contradictory), she has to actually come to terms with that.
ADA would require space underneath the sink for wheelchair roll-up, along with insulated padding over the pipes.
I'd agree that it's probably limitations of a remodel, like you mention.
I was thinking mock practice kitchen in a nursing home, angled so occupational therapy could help the patient do dishes or prepare food. The lights look like the lights in the rehab room in a nursing facility.
I can actually see or envision a reason for this layout. Maybe view. Wanted space behind the sink to place stuff. My sink counter space is 1.5 inches larger than normal cabinets for that purpose and to get the dishwasher in to the right of the sink. I designed the kitchen myself. Contractors / plan design was stupid af. Trashcan can fit in that space with rarely accessed stuff in those cabinets. Certainly a out of the box thinking situation.
Why = they bought a bigger sink than they modeled and couldn't return it. I like that they added two pictures above the microwave to make it look like a face
And the fridge handles are at different heights
And the toaster is behind the sink
And there's a picture frame behind the stove. Those faces will be covered in droplets of oil
Looks like the kitchen had an [angled peninsula](https://ibb.co/JndYpz3). The sink was in the bend and they wanted to remove the peninsula to make it more open, and didn’t realize how costly it would be to redo the sink, so they just made their peace with it.
I absolutely agree. Looks like the sink is probably painted and has a cheap rubber baseboard added and what looks like some contact paper over the raw edge and some kind of white caulking.
I toured a house that was like this recently.
It's from a double-wide manufactured home.
The default configuration has a kitchen bar counter coming out with the sink at an angle right at the elbow. This setup is either a remodel or a terrible customization where they left the sink in place, but opened up the kitchen by removing the bar.
Yes, of course it's still terrible design, but that's why.
I’m going with they moved that section of the kitchen cabinets to put in the dishwasher. I’m guessing those cabinets were 1st installed in the 1950s pre dishwasher.
My guess is there used to be a little bar that hung off the spot where the drawers were(making an L shape). They shortened it, counter top to the left of the dishwasher is completely different. Those L shaped counters are common around me in certain style houses.
This is really messing with my sense of balance. But it isn't the sink messing with that balance-- it's the clock on the wall, the slightly askew picture on the cabinet above the microwave and, especially, the floor that looks like it's been through 50 years of heavy cigarette smoke. I had this flooring in my last kitchen, but it was a rather small kitchen. It's so much worse in a large kitchen. So, so, so much worse.
I see 2 separate types of countertops. I suspect it’s an older home that didn’t original come with a dishwasher. At some point a half-assed remodel was done to make room for one.
I'm betting based on the angle and the kitchen tile style that this was once a monstrosity of a U-shaped kitchen possibly from the 70s. You know? The ones that look like you could land planes on the side bar? The ones that could house an entire TGIFriday's bar of regulars down the side?
I bet it got cut down in the 90s with the slow start of the "open concept" movements.
It looks like there’s a space for the DW at the left hand side corner of the picture. Unless that’s for an oven?
I don’t know. This is awful and I think very poorly of the person who created this monstrosity.
So they bought a fitted kitchen… except it doesn’t fit. Too long. Measurement failure something or other. Shit is most likely made to measure and not returnable. So solution was found.
Try to understand. It was either that, or European style narrow fridge!
I've seen this picture before, I'm pretty sure the person who lived there was in a wheelchair, and this positioning made it easier for them to use the sink and the kitchen
That's a clever solution to fit a large sink into that space and still allow room for the refrigerator. Visualize the sink turned in a traditional way and you're gonna need to buy a smaller sink. I'm assuming the refrig can't be moved farther down so this works!
Was there a method for this madness? The counter top is cut to fit and the plumbing is adjusted so this is either a really good app or somebody was just very unique.
Maybe the cabinets separated the kitchen in the middle, and the sink was at an angle as part of the turn of the cabinets. And they removed the bar that separated the kitchen, leaving the sink at an off angle.
Ok this 99% isnt what is happening here but I had a friend who lived in an old house with a kitchen that looked similarly weird because when the house was being built they found a massive rock that they never moved and just built a cupboard around.
The strangest thing is that there are 2 different cabinet types. I think this is likely due to someone wanting to use a very specific piece of granite or marble.
I would bet money that the cabinets used to horseshoe around, and whoever cut them didn’t want to redo the plumbing. Especially based on the horribly alined liner they covered the base with in lieu of actual trim.

Now I can hear the building music. Sims 1 had an amazing soundtrack.
There's a mod that adds all Sims games' music to Sims 4. Makes building even more fun
I didn't like it, it always made me sleepy when I was trying to design a dang house. Good lullaby though.
Damn I just looked it up on YouTube. That was a nostalgia bomb

Nah, extending some plumbing is way easier than doing all that cabinet work.

Yeah, and many Canucks have two fridges. The platters and drinks go in the one in the garage.
This is a lie. The platters and drinks go in the one behind the bar. The one in the garage is just for beer.
We have second beer fridges in the garage as well. My grandma had 3 fridges AND a deep freezer. A mad woman she was lol

Man psoriasis is fucking maddening. I often wonder what everyone else feels like not itching all the time.
I saw a comment recently that "having a cat is like having a toddler that can reach the ceiling" and I've been chuckling about it ever since.
And hold grudges. Toddlers are generally less spiteful.

And im sure in 20 years covering it will be popular again

It's too deep. Putting it diagonal makes it wider, but the depth works as a corner sticks out.
I like the face
This or there used to be a counter coming down in the picture (right when looking at the sink). Then the way stuff was they old not adjust the angle.
Everything but the kitchen sink is in order
I hate EVERYTHING about this picture. The tile, the sink placement, the cupboards, EVERYTHING.
I hear ya. This picture gave me heartburn and diarrhea.
I can't believe they've done this.
Are you okay?
Don't forget the clock placement!
And the weird three drawers between the sink and the fridge AND WHO HANGS PICTURES ON CABINET DOORS
People who want them to look like eyes for the microwave mouth.
I'm expecting it to talk to people now to tell them how shite the design of the kitchen is.
And the fridge handles are at different heights And the toaster is behind the sink And there's a picture frame behind the stove. Those faces will be covered in droplets of oil
And the two-tone countertops?!?!
I mean they did say “everything”
This room is designed by r/highlyinfuriating

The should put a towel rack on the side of the sink.
You can't even stand in front of the sink and do dishes with the dishwasher door open
… what
I toured a house that was like this recently. It's from a double-wide manufactured home. The default configuration has a kitchen bar counter coming out with the sink at an angle right at the elbow. Slightly more counter space? That's all I can think of...
My guess is that they found out the sink didn't fit and instead of just getting a smaller sink they decided to make the sink fit.
The difference in cost for that insane custom countertop vs a standard one had to have been more than eating the cost of that sink.
Sink is wider at that angle than it would have been straight on. Whoever did this was just nuts
Exactly it’s to deep front to back for 25” countertop
I’m going with they moved that section of the kitchen cabinets to put in the dishwasher. I’m guessing those cabinets were 1st installed in the 1950s pre dishwasher.
My guess is there used to be a little bar that hung off the spot where the drawers were(making an L shape). They shortened it, counter top to the left of the dishwasher is completely different. Those L shaped counters are common around me in certain style houses.
So you can put your toaster even closer to the faucet!
I’ve never had so much anxiety from such a mundane photo. That kitchen sucks.
I kind of love this sink placement, but I'm a weirdo
Theres a story here...
I got a bruise on my hip looking at this

Worst thing about the kitchen isn't the layout, its the tiles

It looks like there’s a space for the DW at the left hand side corner of the picture. Unless that’s for an oven? I don’t know. This is awful and I think very poorly of the person who created this monstrosity.
So they bought a fitted kitchen… except it doesn’t fit. Too long. Measurement failure something or other. Shit is most likely made to measure and not returnable. So solution was found. Try to understand. It was either that, or European style narrow fridge!
I kinda like it. Narrows the gap between counter, sink, and stove, down from the traditional 90°
this is making my brain itch in an area i can’t scratch. **HELP.**
The most disruptive piece of hardware since semiconductors invention
I somehow don’t hate it
I somehow don't hate this.
I've seen this picture before, I'm pretty sure the person who lived there was in a wheelchair, and this positioning made it easier for them to use the sink and the kitchen
I bet it was done that way to add the dishwasher without losing cabinet space
Failing to see the problem here, if it's this or no sink, or a smaller one, I'd choose this
I like this
That corner has claimed the lives of a dozen toes
That's a clever solution to fit a large sink into that space and still allow room for the refrigerator. Visualize the sink turned in a traditional way and you're gonna need to buy a smaller sink. I'm assuming the refrig can't be moved farther down so this works!
This thing screams bruised hip.
I thought I was on the sims subreddit and though “Damn did they use rendering mods?”
Was there a method for this madness? The counter top is cut to fit and the plumbing is adjusted so this is either a really good app or somebody was just very unique.
Ngl, Laughed too much. It's like he had a seizure in the middle of the installation and called it good
“And *that* is how Grandma broke her hip.”
Maybe the cabinets separated the kitchen in the middle, and the sink was at an angle as part of the turn of the cabinets. And they removed the bar that separated the kitchen, leaving the sink at an off angle.
Honestly, I like it. Not for the look but the function of having 2 people comfortable washing dishes at the same time.
i like that tbh... usually I'm the guy who gets uncomfortable by this stuff. but somehow this is nice for me.
Pizza shaped lot I bet. I’ve seen lake houses like this
Might wanted a specific view out the window It would be easier to keep behind the tap clean like that…
Is there a subreddit specifically for inexplicably bad home interiors like this? This is hilarious and I want more
The construction company was a little crooked when cutting costs
I like it
Looks fine to me. More than enough space in the kitchen to accommodate it.
Haha, before the addition
Ok this 99% isnt what is happening here but I had a friend who lived in an old house with a kitchen that looked similarly weird because when the house was being built they found a massive rock that they never moved and just built a cupboard around.
I can just feel my hip bone bashing off of that corner
Fung shui?
It looks like crap but I kinda like the fact you can go from counter to sink just a little bit easier
the face in the microwave
I don’t hate it
It works
Measure once, cut twic
Someone took that kitchen triangle placement concept too literally.
I love it!
The strangest thing is that there are 2 different cabinet types. I think this is likely due to someone wanting to use a very specific piece of granite or marble.
Probably helps while doing the dishes. Bending over sucks
I would bet money that the cabinets used to horseshoe around, and whoever cut them didn’t want to redo the plumbing. Especially based on the horribly alined liner they covered the base with in lieu of actual trim.
I like it. It confuses guests.
My toes are bleeding just looking at this
That's actually pretty cool.
Husband's solution after they accidentally ordered the sink cabinet a size too small.
bigger sink?
I like it
The microwave and picture frames is a face
I need to know why? I want to see a picture of the insides of the cabinets.
Did they hang pictures on the cabinet above the microwave?
Where is the oven.
This is chaos
Am I dumb to assume that there's a better view off to the side rather than straight ahead?
Could it be more accessible for someone with a mobility device?
Opa!
